The small codex kept in the Biblioteca Trivulziana in Milan, datable to the late 1480s, represented and still represents a very discussed text by Leonardo's critics. In particular, the mysterious lists of 8000 words that it contains have been subject to many interpretations (some of which to be rejected nowadays). Despite such vast bibliography, there are still few contributions from linguists, which could help clarify the rationales of the manuscript. My work aims at analysing the word lists collected by Leonardo from a graphical, phonological and morphological point of view. A special attention is paid to the graphic features as, in case of an autograph, they best testify to the author’s education, to his socio-cultural status, and to his tendencies to emancipation.

The second half of the Sixteenth century is an extraordinary period for the history of treatises on art in Italy, since, in less than fifty years, works that will be basic for the development of our artistic theories and for the consolidation of the Italian specialized language of art are published. The joint interest of historians of art and historians of language for this vast amount of documents gives birth to the project Trattati d’arte del Cinquecento (“Treatises on art of the Sixteenth century”): an electronic database containing some of the most important and more difficult to find works published during the century, including Giorgio Vasari's biographies (in both the editions). The electronic textual corpus is fully accessible from the web and allows simple and focused queries through the available forms. A special section of the database is dedicated to the lexicon and provides a comparison between the technical-artistic vocabulary of Vasari's "Vite" and the one documented in the treatises included in the database, in order to highlight connections, innovations and fortune of the linguistic choices of the biographer from Arezzo.
Since the origin of Italian literature, the word used for defining the inner surface of the hand has nearly always been a feminine term: palma. Nowadays, however, what predominates is the use of the masculine variant palmo, namely a ‘measure unit roughly equivalent to 25 centimetres’, or more simply, ‘approximate measure, span’. At first restricted to popular usage (especially in the Tuscan area), from the second half of the nineteenth century the word palmo starts to be found in literary usage and spreads over a large part of Italy, thus losing any diatopic or diastratic connotations. At the same time, the original metrological meaning of the masculine noun loses strength, and the feminine noun mainly survives enshrined in idiomatic expressions (such as tenere/portare in palma di mano). The article traces the diffusion of the variants palma/palmo throughout the centuries, from the vernacular translations of Vitruvius to pages on the web, from dialects to modern Italian, while at the same time analyzing the lexicographical repercussions and reactions.

Leonardo’s artistic lexicon, mainly attested in his "Libro di Pittura", is an extraordinay abstract of figurative arts terminology developing during the fifteenth century: from the practical know how of the workshops, in which the artist is still considered a simple artisan, up to the theoretical and scientific revolution started by Leon Battista Alberti, who compares, for the first time, the artistic representation to an instrument of study of natural phenomena. Nevertheless, even if the vocabulary background inherited by Leonardo is already wide and varied, the lexical outlook documented in his manuscripts is enriched by words absolutely original and innovative (in parallel with his technical-artistic experiments and innovations). The new terms introduced by Leonardo will have great success in time and space, even if through paths still to be discovered.

Sezione 12. Scienza in prosa e in versi.

A special attention is paid to the graphic features as, in case of an autograph, they best testify to the author’s education, to his socio-cultural status, and to his tendencies to emancipation.

inherited by Leonardo is already wide and varied, the lexical outlook documented in his manuscripts is enriched by words absolutely original and innovative (in parallel with his technical-artistic experiments and innovations). The new terms introduced by Leonardo will have great success in time and space, even if through paths still to be discovered.

bio-bibliografica e dell’informatica umanistica.
punto.
