The Arthurian cycle - which was detached from a tower in the countryside of Frugarolo (AL) in 1971 - is one of the most well-preserved examples of camera picta with secular themes. However, the initial hypothesis suggesting its commission by the knight Andreino Trotti lacks precise documentary evidence. Instead, available sources indicates that the property belonged to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and some details in the frescoes may support this hypothesis.

Provençal chansonnier M.819 is an ambitious product from North-East Italy, dated to about the half of the 13th century. The manuscript is decorated with illumi- nated initials and marginal illustrations spread through- out troubadours sections. The one dedicated to Folquet de Marseilla has the widest and most complex pictorial comment, that suggests a different way to read Folquet’s poems: along with the biographical speech, the images convey a moralistic reflection on passional Love and its consequences, compared to religious Love, that will bear Folquet to a saving finale.
The penitential feature of the marginal illustrations, stylistic evaluation on both part of the manuscript dec- oration, the later insertion in the manuscript of the al- legorical poem La Cort d’Amor and some consideration about Love’s iconography lead to think about not only two different artists working on code’s illumination, but also two different clients that customize the manuscript in accordance with their beliefs.

The name of Lanfranco de Pancis da Cremona constitutes the link between two illuminated manuscripts, Firenze, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 5 sin. 2 and Oxford, Bodleian Library, Canon. bibl. lat. 56, dated respectively 1258 and 1265. However, the decorations of the two codices can’t be attributed to the same artist. In 1993 Giovanni Valagussa has attempted to outline a corpus of ten manuscripts decorated by the same Cremonese hand only responsible for the Oxford codex. The analysis of a Bible included in the corpus, Firenze, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Conv. Soppr. 593, that is considered by Valagussa the first work by the Cremonese illuminator, point out, however, its stylistic difference compared to the Oxford Bible and a mature and sophisticated way to create forms and set up scenes. Another Bible from the corpus (Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek 1101) shows some specific Venetian elements, also shared by the Oxford codex.
