The purpose of this paper is to study context, history, mosaics and wall paintings of the domus of 'lararium' in Assisi (ancient Asisium). The dwelling is located in the central part of the southern district of Assisi, south of 'central terrace' and the temple 'of Minerva', between via S. Antonio, via S. Agnese and Piazza del Vescovado, not far from the so-called 'domus of Propertius' or 'Domus Musae'. The house was unearthed in 1992 (southern part of the peristyle), in 2001-2009 (northern part of the peristyle, beneath Palazzo Giampè) and in 2010-2011 (western side of the domus, beneath Palazzo del Cardinale). Seven phases have been identified, from the beginning of the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD, passing through the development of the western side (3rd phase, 50-25 BC) and the extension of the domus with the addition of the easterm peristyle (4th phase, 10 BC-15 AD). The elegant mosaic floors and wall paintings of the eastern side of the domus, which stand out for their exceptionally well-preserved decoration, belong to the 'Third Style', are the work of a refined atelier, and exhibit the luxury of the municipal elite of Asisium.

In the mystery cult sanctuaries the initiation rite took place within a building conventionally called telesterion. So far the relationship between this specific function and the corresponding architectural typology has not been purpose of studies. In this article the occurrence of the term telesterion in literary and epigraphic sources will be discussed and a catalogue of archaeologically recognisable buildings for initiation into the mysteries will be presented, in order to highlight their planimetric and functional features.
