This paper describes the process of creation and review of a new lexico-semantic resource for the classical studies: AncientGreekWordNet. The candidate sets of synonyms (synsets) are extracted from Greek-English dictionaries, on the assumption that Greek words translated by the same English word or phrase have a high probability of being synonyms or at least semantically closely related. The process of validation and the web interface developed to edit and query the resource are described in detail. The lexical coverage of Ancient Greek WordNet is illustrated and the accuracy is evaluated. Finally, scenarios for exploiting the resource are discussed.

Lo studio affronta alcuni aspetti inerenti al tema della legittimazione attiva e passiva ai processi di querela inofficiosi testamenti. Il volume si sviluppa lungo quattro capitoli. Il primo ha per oggetto le norme fondamentali sulla legittimazione alla querela. Il secondo esamina le conseguenze che si verificavano quando l’azione era esercitata da un soggetto non legittimato. Il terzo tratta della disciplina del diritto di accrescimento tra legittimati attivi. Il quarto, infine, analizza un frammento delle Quaestiones di Paolo, D. 5.2.19 (lex “Mater”), molto noto e incluso dal Medio Evo, per la sua difficoltà, tra le cosiddette leges damnatae. Di tale testo viene proposto un tentativo di spiegazione nuovo, inquadrando il passo dal punto di vista dei problemi legati alla legittimazione attiva e passiva alla querela inofficiosi testamenti. Sotto il profilo cronologico, l’indagine ha come punto di partenza il diritto classico, ma, per i singoli temi affrontati, ne segue gli sviluppi fino al diritto giustinianeo e poi a quello bizantino dei Basilici e dei relativi scolii. È parso all’autore che, in relazione al tema trattato, lo studio di tali fonti bizantine risulti di utilità ai fini di una migliore comprensione dei testi classici.

The purpose of the paper is to compare aims and objects of both Greek Philology and Byzantine Studies, paying special attention to the present needs of the Spanish Universities. The focus will be on developing common strategies concerning the study of the Greek language and the history of its literature.

Xuất bản lần đầu năm 2012 tại Bắc Kinh bằng tiếng Trung Quốc, Hán tự học tân luận (漢字學新論) của GS.TS Lý Vận Phú (李運富) đã sớm nhận được sự hoan nghênh từ các nhà Hán tự học Trung Quốc cũng như giới văn tự học Đông Á. Nội dung cuốn sách rất toàn diện, bao gồm 10 chương lần lượt trình bày về các vấn đề: thuộc tính của chữ Hán; khởi nguyên của chữ Hán; nguồn tài liệu nghiên cứu chữ Hán (bao gồm cổ văn tự và kim văn tự); chỉnh lý chữ Hán; hình thể chữ Hán; cấu trúc chữ Hán; công dụng của chữ Hán; các mối quan hệ của chữ Hán; văn hoá chữ Hán. Cách cấu trúc này cho thấy cuốn sách đã bao quát hầu như toàn bộ các vấn đề then chốt nhất trong lĩnh vực Hán tự học, dưới một cách trình bày hệ thống, lớp lang, logic.

Điểm nhấn của cuốn sách là về mặt lý luận, đặt trọng tâm vào phân tích ba bình diện Hình thể, Cấu trúc và Công dụng (tức chức năng) của chữ Hán, xây dựng hệ thống mới cho Hán tự học với “một thể ba mặt” gồm Hình thể học, Cấu trúc học và Công dụng học. Chính vì lý do này nên bản dịch tiếng Hàn Quốc xuất bản đầu năm 2018 đã đổi nhan đề cuốn sách thành Hán tự học ba bình diện (三維漢字學).

Cuốn sách là một tài liệu tham khảo hữu ích cho những ai muốn tìm hiểu về Hán tự học nói riêng và văn tự học Đông Á nói chung. Đặc biệt đối với độc giả Việt Nam, cuốn sách cung cấp một cách luận giải mới về chữ Hán trên cả bình diện lý thuyết và tư liệu, là nền tảng để nghiên cứu về lịch sử chữ Hán ở Việt Nam cũng như các loại văn tự phái sinh từ chữ Hán như chữ Nôm Việt, chữ Nôm Tày, chữ Nôm Dao, chữ Nôm Ngạn.

The noticeable analogies between the funeral laments of Anna and Juturna in the Aeneid have been often explained as a means of linking the sisters of the two main Aeneas’ opponents. But the common features of the two passages (and their differences) become more clear if we trace back them to the tradition of the historical funeral lament, already included in the Iliad and used by Virgil to represent nature and feelings of these two sad characters.

Erasmus's 1516 Latin–Greek New Testament edition differed from the Latin Vulgate in several ways. A small number of textual variants with doctrinal implications involved Erasmus in considerable controversy. Medieval Western theologians had often relied on the " Johannine Comma " (the long reading of 1 John 5.7-8), established in the Latin Vulgate during the late Middle Ages, as an important scriptural foundation for the doctrine of the Trinity. However, when Erasmus showed that this variant was not present in the Greek manuscript tradition, he was accused of promoting Arianism. Eras-mus's debates with the cleric Edward Lee and the textual critic Jacobus Stunica exposed tensions between theologians, jealous of their authority in scriptural interpretation, and humanists, who claimed to understand the Bible better than theologians by virtue of their philological skills. This article concludes by exploring the Inquisition's failed attempt to find a consensus on this issue in 1527.

SI CONSIGLIA DI LEGGERE LA VERSIONE CORRETTA. Uno studio storico e filologico su un errore di trascrizione, in un episodio del libro quinto delle “Storie”, nel quale Erodoto parla di Dorieo, che ha trasformato per secoli un fiume della Magna Grecia in una città Sicana.
Lo studio vuole inoltre rendere omaggio (in parte anche critico) a Luigi Tirrito e agli studiosi dei tempi nei quali rimanere documentati era una operazione estremamente difficoltosa. Comprare libri era molto costoso (oggi i libri si comprano o si scaricano con poca o nessuna spesa), consultarli richiedeva molto tempo perché ci si doveva spostare tra le poche biblioteche esistenti o rivolgersi a studiosi amici (oggi i libri si leggono online), così come molto tempo richiedeva la ricerca all’interno del testo (oggi questa operazione richiede pochi secondi). Nel caso specifico forse qualche leggerezza è stata commessa ma, considerato il contesto, si può anche comprendere e, in qualche modo, giustificare.

In the legacy of prof. Milos N. Djuric, the author found a letter from Caracas and a postcard from Merida, written by his student, the internationally acclaimed classical philologist Miroslav S. Markovic, which are crucial for the understanding why during the 50's he decided to leave Yugoslavia and move to Venecuela. In a letter to his teacher, friend and patron, Markovic explains shortly the reasons why he decided to leave his homeland, and which have mainly to do with the lack of possibilities to pursue his scientific and research projects in Yugoslavia. In the postcard he discretely hints that the decision to leave for Venecuela was the right one. The letter and the postcard are first-class-sources not only for Markovic's intelectual biography, but for the history of the academic life in Yugoslavia of the time. To make the content of the correspondence more clear, the author lists in his introduction the most important moments from the life of Markovic, especially his early years, and then concentrates on the critique of his work in the early 50's. In the end the author presents an important testimony why Markovic decided to go to Venecuela of all places. In the second part the author presents texts and pictures of the letter from Caracas and postcard from Merida.

Translating Virgil’s Bucolics is a hard challenge for the Italian translators, both for the inherent musicality of the text and because of the long literary tradition of Arcadia. The analysis of the different approaches to the text during the XX century and the comparison between the solutions can give a measure of these difficulties, but also illuminate historical and ideological influences.

"This special issue of Comparative Literature Studies brings together talks, some extensively revised, others virtually unchanged, that were delivered at a conference entitled "What is Philology?" The gathering took place on Saturday, March 19, 1988 at Harvard University under the aegis of the Center for Literary and Cultural Studies. The depth and breadth of interest in the conference was deeply gratifying. I had not experienced another occasion when so many scholars from different language and literature departments gathered at Harvard, and I hope that publishing the proceedings will benefit a larger community outside the University.

By way of introduction I will describe how the event originated. My description will explore a few of the reasons why an interdisciplinary conference of a dozen speakers and respondents attracted an audience of more than two hundred, and why a topic that 'may sound rarefied drew participants whose main fields of research and teaching interests ran the gamut from the most ancient Indo-European languages to the most recent African American literature. In short, I will offer tentative explanations for the urgency of the topic to students, professors, and independent scholars who engage in philology, linguistics, literary history, literary criticism, and literary theory."

Le ecloghe agonali di Virgilio (ecll. 3, 5 e 7) condividono non solo lo schema consueto della gara di canto tra pastori, ereditato dalla tradizione bucolica teocritea, ma anche una caratterizzazione dei personaggi in funzione del messaggio poetico di cui appaiono portatori. Sono così poste a confronto una poetica di ispirazione teocritea e una più propriamente virgiliana, che poco a poco trova il suo spazio e rivendica la propria dignità accanto e al di là del suo modello. L’analisi dei tre componimenti permette di seguire questo cammino e di ricostruire le tappe dell’affermazione virgiliana.

Abstract. Virgil’s agonstic eclogues (ecll. 3, 5, 7) share the usual pattern of singing competition between shepherds, inherited from the bucolic Theocritean tradition, but also the characterization of the protagonists in order to show their poetical ideas is a common feature of the three poems. In this way the author compares a poetrys inspired by Theocritus and his own artistic view, that he gradually imposes beside and beyond his model. The analysis of the three poems allows us to follow this path and to reconstruct the stages of Virgil’s affirmation.
