The verification of this hypothesis was carried out through a field survey on the case study of the Ensanche, a district of Barcelona. It represents a case of particular interest because the recovery of the courtyards as public spaces has been the engine of the regeneration of an entire neighborhood.

With the slogan "Intelligently designed housing can dramatically improve people’s health&quo... more With the slogan "Intelligently designed housing can dramatically improve people’s health", the non-profit U.S. association Arch.H.I.Ve invited applications in 2010 for the implementation of five low-cost housing prototypes for families affected by AIDS and tuberculosis in Saint-Marc (Haiti). This was the opportunity for an Italian team of three architects, one doctor and one engineer, to submit a project inspired by construction methodologies able to harmonise elements of bioclimatic architecture with the psychophysical needs of the future occupants. ‘Shutter Dwelling’ was short-listed as one of the five winning projects, and its implementation is currently underway. It was inspired by a holistic approach to housing design which looks at a building as a whole generated by the interaction of three types of factors: energetic factors (air, sun and water), which guarantee the microclimatic suitability of indoor environments; viral factors, which prevent the spread of infections to other family members; functional factors, which facilitate the interaction of patients with the other occupants and the wider community. Taking its cue from that project, this paper seeks to contribute a new conception of housing design, suitable for ‘temporary’ dwellings. The approach it proposes takes into account traditional elements such as construction time, costs and reproducibility, but also caters for healthy, habitable environments, which preserve the social interactions of the occupants and are respectful of the local culture.

In this study, urban greenspaces (green areas) are proposed as a strategy for cities to achieve both urban sustainability and resilience while addressing the issues of energy reduction and climate change adaptation. The study investigated the microclimate impact of greenspaces on the cooling energy needs of residential buildings in Naples, Italy, given different urban fabric characteristics by coupling the microclimate model ENVI-met with the building energy model EnergyPlus. The charts resulted from the study could represent an useful decision support tool for urban planners and policy-makers to locate and size greenspaces based on their effectiveness in terms of energy consumption reduction. The study found that—in general—a medium-size green area (4900 m2) would reduce the cooling energy consumpti...

change adaptat... more The new paradigm of smart city includes the topics of land consumption and climate change adaptation thus bringing to the fore the role of open spaces system in the strategic development of urban areas (Gill et al., 2007; Gargiulo & Zucaro, 2015). In this context, the study of different characteristics of urban settlements and the focus on the relationship between full and empty urban spaces, could provide an important set of information for an energy saving based design of open spaces (Jones et al., 2001; Papa et al., 2014). In particular, within the relations between the elements composing the urban physical space, green spaces play a major role thanks to the many positive effects they produce on the urban environment. Vegetation, in fact, in addition to being a key component of quality of life, has an important role to make cities more sustainable and resilient, through the socalled "oasis effect", significant for reducing the energy consumption due to the use of air conditioning in summer (Coronel & Alvarez, 2001; Zhang et al., 2014). This paper intends to propose a methodology for measuring the impact of the green areas in different types of urban fabric, in terms of temperature mitigation and energy consumption reduction in order to contribute to the scientific debate on the definition of new instruments able to integrate climate and energy aspects in the design of green space networks. This work, in particular, represents a development of a previous research aimed at effectively localizing, dimensioning and distributing green spaces, starting from data related to a heterogeneous urban pattern for density and presence of green in the municipality of Naples. The variable of building aspect ratio, related to the geometry of the road network, was inserted in the calculation parameters, thus achieving, through the use of a thermal simulation software, the incidence of solar radiation on the main facades of the buildings and its rated thermal input for air conditioning of indoor environment. The obtained data were integrated, through the GIS system, with the results of the previous study creating a useful decision support tool to test the effectiveness of the green network system in the analyzed urban context, and to strategically define the areas to place new vegetation elements, both punctual (green spaces) and linear (tree rows).

Therefore, in the context of the current debate about different approaches to architectural design in international cooperation, the experience of Archintorno is in close continuity with the local vernacular culture. This article describes the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed approach through the analysis of the three cooperation experiences of Archintorno in Mexico. The topics discussed cover forms of participation and capacity building, project impact on the local community in terms of economic, socio-cultural, as well as environmental and landscape aspects, in addition to the transposal of technological and architectural innovations and may represent a starting point for discussion within the context of the community operating in this field.
Most of Naples Historic District is an example of “introverted” urban fabric due to the noteworth... more Most of Naples Historic District is an example of “introverted” urban fabric due to the noteworthy presence of inner courtyards. They represent a concealed heritage to be preserved and endorsed, through the reconnection to socio-economic mechanisms of the city. The re-thinking of those places in a collective sense is an important opportunity for such a dense fabric as that of Naples, characterized by a remarkable public spaces shortage. In fact, the regeneration of the heart of the city can have the double meaning of both looking for further urban resources and restoring a collective identity in a functional and sustainable perspective. By means of an analytical approach, we have produced a methodology aimed at enhancing courtyards’ potentialities and their socio-environmental assets, starting from morphological characteristics of urban fabrics. This paper provides early findings of such study, through a project proposal, which confers on courtyards a new connective role in urban texture.

topics of land consumption and climate
change adaptation thus bringing to the fore
the role of open spaces system in the
strategic development of urban areas (Gill et
al., 2007; Gargiulo & Zucaro, 2015). In this
context, the study of different
characteristics of urban settlements and the
focus on the relationship between full and
empty urban spaces, could provide an
important set of information for an energy
saving based design of open spaces (Jones et
al., 2001; Papa et al., 2014). In particular,
within the relations between the elements
composing the urban physical space, green
spaces play a major role thanks to the many
positive effects they produce on the urban
environment. Vegetation, in fact, in addition
to being a key component of quality of life,
has an important role to make cities more
sustainable and resilient, through the socalled
"oasis effect", significant for reducing
the energy consumption due to the use of
air conditioning in summer (Coronel &
Alvarez, 2001; Zhang et al., 2014). This
paper intends to propose a methodology for
measuring the impact of the green areas in
different types of urban fabric, in terms of
temperature mitigation and energy
consumption reduction in order to
contribute to the scientific debate on the
definition of new instruments able to
integrate climate and energy aspects in the
design of green space networks.
This work, in particular, represents a
development of a previous research aimed
at effectively localizing, dimensioning and
distributing green spaces, starting from data
related to a heterogeneous urban pattern
for density and presence of green in the
municipality of Naples.
The variable of building aspect ratio, related
to the geometry of the road network, was
inserted in the calculation parameters, thus
achieving, through the use of a thermal
simulation software, the incidence of solar
radiation on the main facades of the
buildings and its rated thermal input for air
conditioning of indoor environment. The
obtained data were integrated, through the
GIS system, with the results of the previous
study creating a useful decision support tool
to test the effectiveness of the green
network system in the analyzed urban
context, and to strategically define the areas
to place new vegetation elements, both
punctual (green spaces) and linear (tree
rows).
presence of inner courtyards. They represent a concealed heritage to be preserved and endorsed,
through the reconnection to socio-economic mechanisms of the city. The re-thinking of those places in a
collective sense is an important opportunity for such a dense fabric as that of Naples, characterized by a
remarkable public spaces shortage. In fact, the regeneration of the heart of the city can have the double
meaning of both looking for further urban resources and restoring a collective identity in a functional
and sustainable perspective. By means of an analytical approach, we have produced a methodology
aimed at enhancing courtyards’ potentialities and their socio-environmental assets, starting from morphological
characteristics of urban fabrics. This paper provides early findings of such study, through a
project proposal, which confers on courtyards a new connective role in urban texture.
