This essay takes to investigate the category of gestures of pain in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The detailed comparison between the literary text and the iconographic repertoire brings out precise comparisons, particularly with repertoire of images of Roman funerary rituals.

The Ovid’s Metamorphoses are interesting also regarding the study of the Roman house, a rather neglected aspect, which is a further demonstration of the estraordinary richness of this Augustan Age poem. In the poet’s lines we find not only luxury mansions – like Jupiter’s and Sun’s palaces, probably hinting to Augustus’ House on the Palatine – but also important descriptions of poor dwellings, like the rustic house of Philemo and Baucis.

‘Iconographic scheme’ is a polisemantic concept, which already has a variety of uses starting from the classical literature (as demonstrated by a recent study of M. L. Catoni): it refers to the general outline of the figure represented and also to the complete composition of the figure, including internal and external elements (like the gestures, the expression, the clothing, the secondary characters and the elements of the landscape). The ‘iconographic scheme’ of the beautiful seated youth was current in the wallpainting repertoire of the first Imperial Age, used for a variety of subjects (Narkissus, Endymion, Ganymed, Adonis etc.). The study of the seated youth brings to a deep analysis on the process of the images’ creation in a double perspective, the artisan’s one and the patron’s one: in the first case, it will be possible to identify the technical limitations due to the workshop, and also the freedom in using the scheme related to the patron’s choices; at the same time, the choice of archetypes and the components provide useful frameworks for the reconstruction of the personality of the patron through the recognition of the images’ significance. Here we analyze the Cyparissus iconography, a rare subject in the literary and figurative tradition of classical age, which in vesuvian wallpainting has few recurrences extremely interesting just for the reconstruction of the images’ creation and risemantization.

This paper aims to study the topography of Rome through Ovidian verses. In particular, the objects of the research are the poems of love (Amores, Ars Amatoria, Remedia amoris) and of exile (Tristia, Ex Ponto). Comparing the descriptions in these poems, it is clear that the perception of Rome was quite diverse at different stages of the poet’s life.

This contribution is dedicated to the re-examination of the myth of Io, as documented in the mostly pictorial repertoire from the early imperial age. The heroine’s tragic story was the subject of many representations structured around three main moments: captivity, liberation, the arrival at Canopus. The iconographic analysis, evincing the existence of at least three archetypes, is preparatory to the comparison with Ovid’s version, which clearly highlights the distance between text and images, with regards to the captivity and the arrival in Egypt. On the other hand, in three of the four preserved depictions of liberation there is a common detail: the syrinx, which is also central with Ovid, as being the inspiration for a tale on the instrument’s origins. The emphasis given to such detail, which does not appear to have been recorded in literary tradition before the Metamorphoses, allows us to classify it as an “Ovidian indicator”.

A project undertaken by the University of Padua has developed the new database system TESS for mosaics. This database system meets the national standards required by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione – ICCD. The database is available on-line thanks to the project «Cultural heritage in the Adriatic area: knowledge, preservation and enhancement», co-financed by the Community Initiative INTERREG III A – Adriatic Cross Border Programme. In detail, the database TESS includes informative files regarding Building and Rooms, Location, relevant Bibliography and Mosaic Pavement. Each file contains plans, designs and photographs. Furthermore, all the fields have a list of univocal and exhaustive terms in the Italian language. The mosaics database aims to provide a key working tool for the identification of the origins of iconographic themes, their geographic distribution and the development of local fashions which vary according to the context. The software was develope...

The purpose of this paper is to reconsider a little sculpture which represents a young woman who dances, found in Aquileia at the end of nineteenth century. The original work, which can de dated – as Sperti suggests – in the fourth century, confirms the diffusion of these little works in marble or stone in the late antiquity. The subject is also interesting because it is related to the spectacles which were the most important occasion of amusing for the people. The artists performed not only in the theatres and in the circuses but also in the private houses or villas, during the convivial occasions. The little sculpture, which perhaps decorated one of the rich residences in Aquileia, testifies the importance of performances of mimes, pantomimes, dancers in the late antiquity society and the honors that were paid to them.
