Resumen: This paper considers market economies involving the choice of a public environment when there are nonconvexities in production. It discusses the decentralization of efficient allocations by means of valuation equilibrium, adapting to many private goods the notion due to Mas-Colell (1980) which extends the Lindahlian approach to the pure theory of public goods. It is shown that a valuation equilibrium satisfies the two welfare theorems and is in the core.

This paper aims at evaluating the impact of the economic crisis on Spain and its regions by means of two multidimensional indicators that measure the evolution of development (a variant of the human development index) and poverty (combining incidence, intensity and social exclusion). The chosen period is 2006-2011. There are two main outcomes. First, the crisis has hit so hard that improvements in health and education variables do not compensate anymore the fall of income. Second, Spanish regions are responding very differently to the impact of the crisis. This paper provides an approach to poverty measurement that relies on the interpretation of poverty as a welfare loss. Our contribution is twofold. On the one hand, we analyse the relationship between individual and aggregate indicators, by introducing the notion of “distributive impact of poverty”(a measure of the poverty loss due to the inequality among the poor). We show that a welfare inequality measure can be expressed as the sum of the average individual welfare poverty plus the distributive impact of poverty. On the other ...

This paper proposes a mechanism to overcome the possibility that political parties may block the nomination of High-Court judges when the Parliament is involved in their nomination and their mandate expires on a fixed date. This possibility arises when the default option is that the judge whose mandate expires holds office until an agreement is reached. Our proposal consists of changing the default option by a weighted lottery.

This paper analyzes the existence of equilibrium for a class of market games in which agents are allowed to follow different patterns of behaviour, including cases where the strategy sets are neither compact nor convex. Agent's behaviour is modelled in terms of “inverse reply correspondences”(mappings that associate to each agent's strategy those outcomes that she finds acceptable). Sufficient conditions for an equilibrium to exist are provided

Abstract We analyze in this paper the relationships between six selected problems involving nonlinear operators in Euclidean spaces. Those problems illustrate some of the chief applications of nonlinear operators, and have been selected in view of their usefulness in economic modelling. The analysis of these relationships aims at providing a panoply of tools suitable for the solvability of those economic models which can be formulated in terms of nonlinear operators.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a simple proof of the existence of equilibrium in an economic model in which:(i) the production processes are modelled in terms of a non-linear input-output model (ie, we rule out joint production and consider only one primary input);(ii) firms sell their outputs at the average cost; and (iii) consumers are free to choose their demands, according to the supply prices.

Abstract In this paper we analyze the existence of Pareto optimal allocations of k goods among n agents, when individual welfare depends on relative consumption. Under rather mild assumptions we show that for any predetermined vector of utility values we can find the amounts of goods, and their corresponding distribution, so that those target utility values are efficiently achieved.

The equal-distance rule in allocation problems with single-peaked preferences* Carmen Herrero1 and Antonio Villar1 1 Department of Economics, University of Alicante, Apartadode Correos, 99, 03080 Alicante, Spain and IVIE Abstract. We consider allocation problems with single-peaked preferences, and focus on the equal-distance rule (Thomson, 1994). An axiomatic characterization of the equal-distance rule is provided.

This paper presents a characterization of a welfare index for the evaluation of primary goods (to be understood as those goods that all agents should enjoy equally). The welfare associated with a given distribution of n primary goods among m agents is measured as the sum of n real-valued functions, one for each good, which are increasing in the aggregate consumption and decreasing in its dispersion (measured by Theil's first inequality index).
