Building on examples from post-socialist Central Europe, this article addresses changes in European higher education policy and examines the 'paradoxical effect' (Foucault 2008) of neoliberal educational reforms on the doctoral level. We consider how economically driven policies oriented at building Europe's knowledge economy and market effectiveness, created possibilities for subjectification related to the extension of individual freedom – an aspect of neoliberalism that Foucault juxtaposed to other forms of governmentality. Drawing on our positioning as doctoral supervisors in the Polish and Czech academia during the period of intensive institutional restructuring, we illustrate how European higher education reforms opened the doors of doctoral education to practitioners-doctoral researchers who found themselves in the unique position bring critical perspectives to illuminate covert socio-economic and political mechanisms of their practice. We consider the potential o...

Adequate staffing of university studies with qualified academics was completed thanks to the reimplementation of three-stage university education during the post-socialist restoration of higher education in the Czech Republic. Thus, the doctoral degree of education has been attained by more than four-fifths of academic staff, with over two-fifths of them being aged 50+. The current course of university studies, including doctoral study programs, is influenced by their focus on educational and research strategy. With regards to the regulations for graduating in doctoral studies, doctoral candidates act as homo oeconomicus following neo-liberal educational policy. The conditions for doctoral studies, namely, those in educational sciences, thus lead to paradoxes caused by the current higher educational policy. The objective of the paper is to analyze the neoliberal set-up of the higher education policy of the Czech Republic in the field of doctoral studies in educational sciences in pa...

PurposeThe article explores the current as well as the future concepts of university teaching by the academics/the “leaders of educational sciences” in the context of the changes of the academia that have affected the academic professionalization.Design/methodology/approachThe Delphi method was implemented to answer a research question dealing with the possible change in academics' concept of teaching as part of their current and future work. In this study, the experienced academics in the area of educational science are seen as the “leaders” since through their intensive teaching activities on all three levels (bachelor, master and doctoral) as well as through the high-quality research, they “lead” the concept of a particular science as well as the educational policy. Four rounds were used for consensus building among “leaders” based on a multiple interaction in an anonymous setting.FindingsThe research points out that academic professionalization in research is at its maximum....

This contribution focuses on the organizational climate of universities and their facultiepp. After providing theoretical background for the topic of organizational climate and description of research realized abroad and its methods, the development itself of the tools for research on perception of the organizational climate of faculties providing teacher training by the academic workers is introduced. It is represented by a concept of three versions of a questionnaire and one sheet of semi-structured interview. Research tools are characterized and their specifications are provided. For illustration purposes, descriptions and interpretations of results of realized research at three faculties are provided. Because of the nature of the topic the results cannot be compared. Data gathered during this phase of the research do not enable to define standardpp. Descriptive statistics therefore represent the basis for the interpretation. Process of lifelong learning and education is applied ...

The de-ideologisation of Czech higher education was accompanied by many other changes after 1990 in the Czech Republic. In the context of local and global educational policy, this paper presents three periods of development of the educational sciences including andragogy in Czech higher education after 1990, showing how changes influenced university teaching quality. In the research part, the study concentrates on changes made by the actors – notably professors/associate professors – involved in the development of the educational sciences in the Czech Republic since the 1990s. The analysis of the semi-structured interviews shows that the change in educational sciences was framed by limited access to foreign literature and significant personnel changes, including the return of qualified academics. The promotion of andragogy in the Czech Republic demanded the development of methodology and a critical approach to adult learning. For individual academics, the new focus privileged resear...

Employment policy as part of the social policy of the state has two basic objectives - achieving full employment and protection against unemployment. There are many groups of people who are highly vulnerable to unemployment on the labour market. For these people, the existence of so-called integration social enterprises, which can offer them a job opportunity, can be particularly useful. If integration social enterprises are supported by the state, we can talk about an active employment policy. Objective of this research is to determine representation of integration social enterprises in a selected region of the Czech Republic and to assess their potential in the context of state employment policy. Although legislative conditions for social enterprises have not yet been developed in the Czech Republic, the research shows that social enterprises have the potential to become a useful tool of active employment policy. It was found that the target group of analysed social enterprises ar...

In the Czech Republic an often discussed issue of the last
years is the reform of higher education in order to improve
university studies. What is often dealt with is a change of the
formula for funding universities, which brings along increa-
sing requirements of research activities of academic staff and
improvement of their qualification. Compared to faculties of
natural sciences, medicine and technology, faculties of educa-
tion are more influenced by these changes because up to now
the academic staff ’s performance has been focused on training
of future teachers and less oriented to science and research.
The pressure on the change of financing of universities, the
decreasing demographic curve and the pressure on science and
research influence also the quality of organizational climate a workplaces. In the presented text, theoretical starting points
are analyzed that help set the perception of organizational cli-
mate of faculties of education by academic staff as an outcome
of changes in the Czech higher education. The text presents
only central terms and selected characteristics of organizatio-
nal climate, also the survey of some empirical studies impor-
tant for our needs is brief, not attempting for their complete-
ness. In the conclusion, objectives of our research project are
articulated in order to motivate the reader to follow reports on
the progress and outputs of our research survey; but what is
also outlined are ways to reach them and the specifics of aca-
demic environment which must be considered in the research.
Nevertheless we are still at the very beginning.

Bourdieu does not blind the fact that he branched from the French structuralism and that he is a critic of its static character which he surmounts by means of the dynamism characterizing the interpretative theories. He introduces a number of new concepts into sociology for what he is blamed on the one hand because it complicates understanding his own theory; on the other hand it enables him to avoid the epistemological dichotomy of objective versus subjective approach, as well as the dichotomy, rather value or political one, of consensual versus conflict understanding of the contemporary societies. He leaves the structuralistic meanings of the words status, structure, class, fights what does still not place him on the side of the critics of structuralism or the theories of conflict. The frame of all his works is Bourdieu’s theory of reproduction of society and creation, or preservation of order. This is the substance of his theory of action, even though not always explicitly expressed in all his works. Bourdieu’s theory based on the relation “position - disposition - interaction”, or in Bourdieu’s terms “structure - habitus - practice,” has the characteristics rather of Merton’s medium-range theory than of Parson’s macrotheory.

Nowadays there is a number of theoretical approaches to the studies of vertical differentiation; one of them is the approach or Pierre Bourdieu. A less usual method was chosen jor its presentation. ln the first part, we proceed from the Czech interpretations of the Bourdieu's theory of class, known to the Czech reader, to Bourdieu's theory itself. Thus we are introduced to Bourdieu's theory interpreted within the official Marxist sociology of the 1970s and 1980s and then with its interpretation after 1990. The second part focuses on the core of Bourdieu's theory of vertical differentiation (social topography), at the level of nominal "classes on paper" as well as at the one of real classes as mobilized social groups. Bourdieu's approach can help better understanding of the social structure of a society. The reason is that Bourdieu's social actors are not represented as Marx's fighters but as strategists.

Age: Old Age – Role: Grandparent. In the social sciences the issue of the old age is related to age and its measurement. Besides the objective approaches towards age and the age structure of the society, there are also the subjective approaches. Perception of age significantly influences the performance of the social roles of a person and the identification with the “new” social roles. Within the frequent social roles of the seniors, the role of a grandparent is explored. On the basis of the grandparenthood researches, using various research strategies and carried out in various countries, typologies of grandparents were created that in principle accord with each other.

Pierre Bourdieu, in his book La domination masculine (1998),
writes about symbolic power and symbolic violence in the
structure of domination, which influence the interpretations of
social order. One of the institutions in the structures of domination is the educational system. For the analysis of the educational system producing symbolic violence, in La reproduction (1970) Bourdieu and Passeron introduced terms that could uncover the impact of symbolic violence on the role of woman.
