Abstract The article analyses a new educational development in Poland, that is, free democratic schools, which are grassroots initiatives of parents seeking an alternative to the traditional pedagogies of the public schooling. These schools form a broader network. Based on ethnographic research carried out at eight such schools over five years, the authors discuss the formation of schools, parents’ motivations, collective identity constructions, and internal tensions of inclusion and belonging. Regarding the potential impact of the schools on a broader educational sphere, the authors argue that the alternative schooling as an option for parental choice parallel to the expansion of neoliberal policies and new inequalities creates tensions between the notions of democracy and the consumer logic. However, as observed practices suggest, democratic school communities face internal political dynamics intertwined with societal issues and may seek involvement outside their circles. While these communities are constantly being reformulated, the question of exit and voice becomes their permanent feature.

Generation of March '68 in Exile: Patterns of Integration and Identification Shifts
The article addresses questions concerning individual experiences and group developments among post-March 1968 émigrés from Poland. While much is known about where these refugees migrated and that the experience of the anti-Jewish stigma has led to shifts in national identification, biographical and social dynamics behind these changes in lifelong perspective have not been a subject of many systematic studies. What did it mean to be an exiled victim of antisemitic hatred and political persecution? How were “Polish” and “Jewish” identification labels revalued in new geographical, political, and (multi)cultural contexts? How did new countries and new societal settings foster or hinder a new sense of belonging and national attachment? How did the émigrés’ experiences and identification patterns evolve through different modes of integration in host societies, local Jewish communities, as well as broader diasporic space, including links with Israel and Poland as well as generational reunion meetings? The qualitative analysis is based on selections from field material (biographic interviews conducted by the author in several countries between 2001 and 2017) as well as some published memoirs and interviews. The proposed approach links the sociological framework of the diaspora and transnational studies with biographic perspectives drawn from oral histories. It highlights exiles’ typical experiences related to the interplay of coercion, choice, and migratory cultural capital at the point of exit, including anticipation of opportunities in potential countries of immigration. It also discusses some aspects of early adaptation, mid-term integration in societies and local Jewish communities, as well as re-establishing transnational and generational networks.

The article discusses the main theses of Zygmunt Bauman’s book Modernity and the Holocaust, the contexts of its writing and its early critical reception in the 1990s. As an introduction to the issue’s theme, it focuses on the proposals for a contemporary interpretation of Bauman’s work put forward by the authors of the articles published in this issue of Studia Litteraria et Historica. In the final section, the author proposes a reading of Modernity and the Holocaust in relation to educational issues raised in the 1960s by Theodor W. Adorno.

Niczym w siedemnastowiecznym sporze starożytników z no...

The article introduces a special issue of Policy Futures in Education on changes and challenges in educational policies and systems of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The countries in the region share some characteristics, such as their historical experience with the authoritarian–socialist or communist rule and its impact on education policies, as well as their long-lasting economic semi-peripherality. Differences within the region are also discussed in the article: from macro-level economic gaps to relative dissimilarities of education systems’ structures, as well as international assessment benchmarks. The articles in this issue present analyses of educational policies in Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. A theme that emerges most clearly across these texts is the complexity of East–West relationships. Read together, the contributions serve as a call for a more nuanced and contextualized look at CEE. Transformation of educational systems that entails the in...

The article focuses on selected educational developments in early twentieth century Poland. It begins with an overview of the changes in the organisation of education and care for young children during the pre-independence and interwar periods. The authors discuss social and political challenges as reflected in educational realities as well as attempts at reform and innovations towards child-centred pedagogies inspired by the New Education Movement. Two examples are presented in more detail: the pedagogical approach of Janusz Korczak and his collaborators, Stefania Wilczyńska and Maria Falska, in Warsaw childcare institutions, and the Workers’ Society for the Friends of Children (Robotnicze Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Dzieci), which rooted its educational system in broader efforts aimed at advancement of the working class. Both initiatives formulated their task as educating new generations of citizens conscious of their rights and capable of taking active part in the struggle against injustices in society.
