EnglishWe present to the scientific community a new canvas of the not-well known Sevillian painter Jeronimo de Bobadilla, signed and dated in 1684, and currently held at the Carmen de Maipu Museum in Santiago de Chile. In addition to enriching and enlarging the catalogue of one of the unknown Sevillian painters of the Baroque era, we will analyze the originality of its iconographical program: the offering of the hearts of creole and indigenous donors to the Five Lords, a syntax of the Holy Family, scarcely present in Spain, but not so unusual in the New World.

Their iconographic code defined and placed them as a pattern in the fascinating amalgam of American ‘angelolatry’. This paper seeks to explore the possible identitarian meaning of this devotion in Mexican Baroque.

We study original plaster motifs of carefree angels whipping monstruous figures, to the mysterious image of the child ordering to keep silence in Mañara´s portrait; Murilo´s children or those related the Charity´s allegories that are scattered over the institution.

So, from its born in 1516, such worship was linked to Carlos V depending on its commune ministerium: the world´s government, heavenly, that from angels; land, that from emperor. In Italy motivated the creation of a Confraternità, with the title of imperiale, earning its support of Sicilian and Roman nobility; and, in Spain, the monarchical nature obtained a feminine bias because of praise that was given by monasteries of regal patronage. The baroque literature of devotion will consolidate and will spread this theological-political conception of Hispanic monarchy through the Jesuit Andrés Serrano´s work.

Sacred Images and Normativity: Contested Forms in Early Modern Art, 2021

Early moder... more First volume of the new SACRIMA SERIES now partially available at Brepols Online:
Early modern objects, images and artworks often served as nodes of discussion and contestation. If images were sometimes contested by external and often competing agencies (religious and secular authorities, image theoreticians, inquisitions, or single individuals), artists and objects were often just as likely to impose their own rules and standards through the continuation or contestation of established visual traditions, styles, iconographies, materialities, reproductions and reframings.
Centering on the capacity of the image as agent - either in actual legal processes or, more generally, in the creation of new visual standards - this volume provides a first exploration of image normativity by means of a series of case studies that focus in different ways on the intersections between the limits of the sacred image and the power of art between 1450 and 1650.
The fourteen contributors to this volume discuss the status of images and objects in trials; contested portraits, objects and iconographies; the limits to representations of ering; the tensions between theology and art; and the significance of copies and adaptations that establish as well as contest visual norms from Europe and beyond.
Authors:
Yoshie Kojima, Chiara Franceschini, Cloe Cavero de Carondelet, Escardiel González Estévez, Mattia Biffis, James Hall, Nina Niedermeier, Steffen Zierholz, Antonia Putzger, Erin Giffin, Piers Baker-Bates, Josephine Neil, Livia Stoenescu and Todd P. Olson.
