This paper aims to discuss the influence of Muhammadiyah in shifting the meaning of Yaa Qowiyyu ritual or Apeman in Jatinom, Klaten. The discussion focuses on examining the role of the dominant group in establishing the mainstream culture in the area. Upon its arrival, Muhammadiyah has established a strong existence in the village and has changed the beliefs of Jatinom residents about the ritual although they still keep the Yaa Qowiyuu existence. Consequently, changes are made in the ritual. The practice is no longer called ‘ritual’ as its term or meaning. Instead, Apeman has turned into a festival. Moreover, the residents’ belief in receiving blessing from the traditional rice flour cake called apem has already gone. Through the ethnographic method, this research shows the ways Muhammadiyah shifted the Jatinom society’s religious perspectives and the critical implications of the efforts to the ritual itself. This paper elaborates the aforementioned problems to observe wheth...

The network of Indonesian Women’s Ulema under KUPI has emerged to become a new reform in a religious landscape tinted with masculine domination. This paper aims to explain the KUPI’s conceptual hermeneutical framework in producing religious interpretations and the implication of the approach on constructing inclusive gender norms and practices. This qualitative research is based on the results of interviews and literature studies as the primary data. This study demonstrates that the collective agency and power of KUPI network and its authoritative claim allowed the emergence of an inclusive production of religious interpretations and norm. As a result, it creates room for women's voice and contribution within the social and religious normative frame. The significance of this study shows that the authority of female as ulama and the hermeneutical approach in the one hand, and in the other hand inclusive gender paradigm is allowing the KUPI network to initiate a reform in both soc...

History and pandemics are two inseparable entities, yet often forgotten. The occurrence of a pandemic in a certain time and place has always become a critical object of study and documentation, thus generating innumerable research literature. This research attempts to re-state the urgency of historical literature as a source of knowledge on dealing with the Covid-19 crisis through the religious scholars’ approach. The data were compiled through observation and literature review with content analysis method on Bażl al-Māʿūn of Ibn Ḥajr al-ʿAsqalānī, a classic book containing pandemic studies sourced from hadith and the history of the early Muslim community. The result of this study reveals that classical religious literature as historical knowledge could provide contextual solutions for society. The study of the historical works not only gives clues on the past events but also provides material to contextualise the attempt to build newly-induced awareness in the community. Learning f...

The division of inheritance is one of the main problems in Islamic law. The legal basis for inheritance division refers to the Qur’an and hadith as the sources of law. However, there are different interpretations and practices in society regarding the division of inheritance for women and men. Islam and indigenous tradition in Indonesia have long established interconnected relations in both social and ritual practices. This study elaborates on the Islamic construction of the indigenous Bugis-Makassar tradition. The “Haji Bawakaraeng” is one the familiar practice and is believed to exist in the South Sulawesi region. Term Haji Bawakaraeng is a religious practice contained with local Muslim beliefs carried out on Mount Bawakaraeng. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection done through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. This study finds that the Bugis-Makassar habit of carrying out a series of rituals on the summit of Mount Bawakaraeng is an old belief facing the process of negotiation and adaptation to the teachings of Islam. The presence of the term Hajj as an Islamic construction and Bawakaraeng as a local cultural construction is the result of the construction of Islam on the local beliefs of the Buginese-Makassarnese. Islam and local traditions have been struggling dynamically as seen in the reality of the social and religious life in the Indonesian context. This study aims to reaffirm the relationship between religion and local traditions by observing the consistency of South Sulawesi’s Bawakaraeng community in practicing both Islam and local traditions. This work is based on data collected through observation, interviews, and literature studies with a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. The results of this study show three findings. First, the Bawakaraeng community, represented by some people of Buginese and Macassarese ethnic groups, still believes that a local mountain is the center of a ritual to get closer to the creator. Second, the community has not only a strong consistency in the practice of Islamic teachings, but also a high commitment to maintaining local traditions, as practiced by Bawakaraeng community members. Third, religious consistency and a commitment to local traditions...

Ulama as epicenters of religious leader in spreading religious teachings in Muslim societies have experienced
deauthorization. This study aims to reflect the Muslim societies’ perceptions and responses on the Ulama policies in
countering Covid-19 in Indonesia. This study uses observation, interviews, and literature review as data sources. This
study presents a theoretical perspective on the deauthorization of the Ulama role in Indonesia in handling Covid-19. This
study found three socioreligious aspects. Firstly, less public’s knowledge and understanding of Covid-19 socialization
confirms multiple interpretations at the grass road level. Secondly, the socialization of the Ulama policies has not been
carried out effectively, as seen in several cases, such as the rejection of the mosque closure and the prohibition of other
religious activities, due to the lack of public knowledge about this epidemic. Thirdly, government policies on Large-Scale
Social Restrictions (PSBB) which are totally supported by the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Council) as the representation of
Indonesian Muslim scholar have not been able to suppress the Muslim societies’ enthusiasm in the practice of religious
activities. It indeed demonstrates Ulama’s deauthorization in countering Covid-19 pandemic for Muslim societies in

Civilians are considered capable of overcoming problems and can advance Indonesia in the future. Second, there are variations in the reasons for voters voting their candidates. In addition to performance factors, firmness and competency factors are the drivers for voters to make choices regarding contending candidates. Third, differences in political choices have an impact on polarization among Muslim communities. Di...

In the concept of god, for example, the terms of “Dewata SeuwwaE” (Bugis) and “Tau ri A’rana” (Makaasar) still can be heard and believed. In the daily lifes, the influence of local beliefs cover rituals such “mappangre galung” (farmer) and “maccera tasi” (fishermen) still conducted in the community. This article also evaluates the old beliefs of South Sulawesi peoples, both before and after the coming of Islam. Also these religions’ influences in the daily lives are highlighted. A dynamic dialogue between the local religions and Islam becomes the core of this paper.

In doing so, they require the ability to improve the quality of their educational services. This study seeks to provide an understanding of how Indonesia's private universities manage the quality of their services to become centers of excellence. In doing so, this study utilizes quantitative data that were collected through questionnaires/surveys. Complementary data were collected through interviews. Analysis was conducted using a nonparametric statistics approach as well as a descriptive qualitative approach. This study finds that the quality of educational services is an important factor for improving institutional quality. Services must regularly be adapted to consumers' needs to avoid pitfalls and gaps. Consumer satisfaction with educational services affects how universities are perceived by society; as such, the quality of said services is inexorably ...
