As a critique of objectification, phenomenological methodology offers resources for a disruption ... more As a critique of objectification, phenomenological methodology offers resources for a disruption of sedimented or instituted meanings and practices that are hindering the access to a shared life-world, where self-exposure, hesitation, and vulnerability shape our human connections and the practice of our freedom. Relying on the methodological directions sketched in this special issue, we argue in favor of a phenomenological approach to a materialist social theory. For the genetic perspective we indicate, normative imperatives – even if they are limited to a specific social context – tend to cover over living processes of collective emancipation, in the same way in which for Husserl theoretical substructions obscure the realm of the life-world, veiling its intuitive evidence and disorienting the critical work of clarification. If this theoretical tendency toward abstraction is rooted in the actual conditions of the production and reproduction of the social world – a process closely tied to what some have called “real abstraction” – a materially-oriented phenomenology can provide an indispensable set of resources for critical theory, allowing for an in-depth investigation of the lived experience of social forms such as reified individuality and abstract labor.

Phenomenological critique attempts to retrieve the lived experience of a human community alienate... more Phenomenological critique attempts to retrieve the lived experience of a human community alienated from its truthful condition and immersed in historical crises brought by processes of objectification and estrangement. This introductory article challenges two methodological assumptions that are largely shared in North American Critical Phenomenology: the definition of phenomenology as a first person approach of experience and the rejection of transcendental eidetics. While reflecting on the importance of otherness and community for phenomenology’s critical orientation, we reconsider the importance of eidetics from the standpoint of Husserl’s genetic phenomenology, highlighting its historical and contingent character. Contrary to the received view of Husserl’s classical phenomenology as an idealistic and rigid undertaking, we show that his genetic phenomenology is interested in the material formation of meaning (Sinnbildung), offering resources for a phenomenological approach to a materialist social theory.

Following Walter Benjamin’s and Maria Zambrano’s approach, the paper will focus on an analysis of dream that takes some distance from the phenomenological description made by some of the most known Husserl’s followers, such as Fink, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre. While the phenomenological description investigates the dreaming experience proceeding from the state of being awake and aware, our analysis will look at the latter from the point of view opened by the state we are in when we are dreaming. This perspective brings out some new questions about the importance of dreams in the present-past connexion and about the relation between dream and history.

The subjectivation is to be described as a process driving the self from what is seen in the other towards some parts of his unconscious that remain unknown. Violence and freedom in the social field are to be examined in relation to this difficult self-knowledge that we may access when the other is not only a limit, but also an indicating sign of what we are, without knowing it.

Despite of the similarities between the two works, some differences may be shown, which underline young Schelling’s originality. When criticizing, like Fichte, the natural law, Schelling proposes a new theory on the relation between autonomy and law, opening the area of thinking a collective subjectivity based on equality and freedom. Analyzing the practical status of an “autonomous heteronomy” in a relation of equality, his treatise marks a major step in thinking the law as a common right.

experience takes birth and develops, phenomenology hasn’t always clearly specify its
concrete nature and its practical consequences. Following Patocka’s suggestions, the
paper confronts the notion of meaning with those of being, life, value and finality, in
order to show that its nature reveals only in its concrete experimentation, when meaning
is lost or about to be lost, when it remains unknown or to be discovered. The necessity
of meaning for living is thus to be defended from the point of view of those who share
it in the clear lucidity of its fragility and through the hope to sustain its revival.
difference or repetition?
While criticising the empiric theories of imagination, Husserlian phenomenology has stressed the difference between imagination and perception as a difference of modality existing between two types of intentional consciousness: the indirect consciousness of presentification (Vergegenwärtigung) and a direct consciousness of presentation (Gegenwärtigung). Nevertheless, in this perspective imagination still seems to lean on a repetition of what is absent, being impossible to feel, to catch and to grasp. But what kind a repetition is that? In order to respond this question, the conference explores the Husserlian theory of temporality, confronting it to Kant and Deleuze.
