A specialist in 16th and 17th-century Italian music, he has published two books on the Monteverdi Vespers, a critical/performing edition of the Vespers as well as two Monteverdi masses, other books and articles on the music of Claudio Monteverdi and other Italian music from the sixteenth and seventeenth-centuries and a 10-volume edition of Italian Vespers and Compline Music of the same period. He was the founding president of the international ‘Society for Seventeenth-Century Music,’ and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Society’s Journal and Web Library of Seventeenth-Century Music. Prof. Kurtzman is the General Editor of the Opera Omnia of Alessandro Grandi, published by the American Institute of Musicology, and of an anthology of Italian Instrumental music published by the Web Library of Seventeenth-Century Music.edit

It contains the complete music of all fourteen compositions as in Monteverdi's original print, plus the psalm 'Lauda Jerusalem' and the two Magnificats in a choice of pitches. Also provided are a continuo realization, notes on performance, Gregorian antiphons for the feasts of the Virgin, and examples of typical early seventeenth-century embellishments.
