This system is designed for reading electrical energy consumed in units and in kyats to display on an LCD screen to the user. This system becomes necessary for the consumer to know as to how much electricity is consumed to control electricity bill within user budget. In this system, the consumer will get energy consumption data on a real time basis on an LCD display. The same data is sent through GSM modem to the electricity department via SMS. AT Mega 328P microcontroller is interfaced to the voltage divider and current sensor to get the Watt Hour pulses. The microcontroller then processes these pulses according to the program written in it, to calculate the units consumed and cost involved. Further, it gives the command to the SIM loaded GSM modem for sending the data to the electricity department via SMS. The designed device is installed with the energy meter installed in consumer's home. It collects the input from the energy meter converts those input to suitable signals for microcontroller. These signals from microcontroller are sent to the service provider using a GSM module. The service provider calculates the consumption and forwards a SMS to the consumers registered mobile number. Implementation of this project will reduce the cost of providing utility to the consumers. The experimental outcome was quiet promising.

The measurement of the energy consumed by residential and commercial buildings by utility provider is important in billing, control and monitoring of the usage of energy. Traditional metering techniques used for the measurement of energy are not convenient and is prone to different forms of irregularities. These irregularities include inaccuracies in billing due to human error, energy theft, loss of revenue due to corruption and so on. This research study proposed the design and construction of a microcontroller based electric energy metering system using the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) network. Electricity is one of the vital requirements for the sustainment of a comfortable and productive life and as such it should be used judiciously for its proper utilization. Consumers are not satisfied with the services of power companies with the existing energy meter reading and billing system. Most of the time they have complains regarding statistical errors in their monthly bills. The objective of our project is to design and implement an automatic energy meter reading system that measures and transmits total energy consumption to the Electricity Provider using the GSM network as well as disconnect or reconnect the meter remotely. This can be achieved by the use of a microcontroller unit that continuously monitors and records the energy meter readings in its permanent memory location and a GSM modem that enables the remote monitoring and control of the energy meter. The proposed Microcontroller based system continuously records the readings and the live meter reading can be sent to the provider using the existing short messaging services (SMS) of the GSM network on request. This system can also be used to disconnect or reconnect the power supply to the consumer if the need arises. A dedicated GSM modem with a SIM card interfaced to the ports of the microcontroller is required for each energy meter. With this, a great deal of energy is saved and the consumer enjoys maximum satisfaction of the electrical energy paid for; hence an improvement, stability and utilization of electrical energy are achieved as well as reduction on human dependency.

In present world almost all industrial systems are based on wireless communication, as it has many advantages. The development of a fully Automated Energy Meter which is having capabilities like remote monitoring and controlling of energy meter will lead to transparency in the energy meter reading and billing system. Automatic Meter Reading system (AMR) will continuously monitors the energy meter and sends data on to a server system of service provider through wireless communication where data will be stored as well. Later the bill details will be sent to the customer through SMS. It saves huge human labor. Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) technology is used to communicate between the service provider and the customer. This system avoids the human intervention in power management. If the customer does not pay the bill in time, the user is informed through SMS system using GSM. If still customer does not pay the bill then as per designed late consideration, one alert message will be sent then automatically the power connection is disconnected from the remote server. This developed system provides efficient monitoring of energy meter reading, power control mechanism, avoids the billing error and also reduces the cost of maintenance.

In a developing country, people use postpaid electricity for their own purposes. Be that as it may, they do not know the amount of electricity they have consumed and how much cost they have done likewise till they receive the consumption bill at the end of the month. Also, in prepaid meters, to see consumption details, people have to go in front of the meter. In this research, a system has been designed based on GSM technology to solve this problem. The prepaid meter must be recharged; as a result, clients can use the electricity. The system alerts the client for any kind of emergency. Besides, when the client is away from the house, he can easily switch off the supply of electricity by sending an SMS. This project will support both society and country because it helps to reduce the wastage of electricity and to check electricity consumption and bill from remote distances.

This system consists of GSM digital power meter installed in every consumer unit. A GSM modem is connected to the energy meter. Each modem will be having its own sim.The sim card used is implemented in energy meter and it sends a message to the user about the due bill. A LCD is used in the hardware module for the user interface. The LCD displays the current usage and units consumed. Here the system operates in two modes. First mode is depends up on the time and the second mode is depends up on the usage of power. For every 30 days the information is sends to the electricity board office regarding the units by using GSM. The user can pay the amount just by knowing the given code which is fed in the meter. If that consumer does not payed the bill then from the EB(ELECTRICITY BOARD) office the power is switched off. `After paying the bill only the power is connected to that consumer by sending a command from the EB(ELECTRICITY BOARD) office. If in case the required units usages have achieved within 30 days then the power will be shut down and immediately and the SMS is sent to the EB(ELECTRICITY BOARD) office.
