The area of the North Saqqara plateau south of the causeway of King Unas became one of the most prominent necropolis sites of Memphis during the New Kingdom. It is where the archaeological expedition of the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University discovered dozens of temple-shaped tombs dating to the Ramesside Period. Recently, the expedition led by Ola El-Aguizy uncovered the tomb of Iurokhy (Urhiya), an army general during the early reign of Ramesses II. This paper focuses on the unusual finds discovered in one of the tomb's chapels. These comprise an intact secondary burial in a wooden coffin along with wooden shabtis. This paper proposes to identify the individual buried in the chapel as a member of the personnel that serviced the mortuary cult of Iurokhy. Further objects deposited in the chapel shed light on the continued use of the chapel as a space of burial and commemoration.

Fourth Report on the Publication and Conservation of the Tomb of Ramesses III in the Valley of the Kings (KV 11)The following article presents preliminary results of a sondage in the burial chamber (hall J) and a visual survey in the areas H, I, J, Ja-Jd, K1, K2, and L during the 2019/2020 field season carried out by The Ramesses III (KV 11) Publication and Conservation Project in the tomb of pharaoh Ramesses III.1 The detailed description and interpretation of the initial excavation work were omitted from the Second Report2 because it required more extensive discussion. The authors present their archaeological field work, their research, and the systematic examination of finds. Several unexpected finds shed new light on the use and reuse of KV 11. A sondage in the burial chamber provides insight into ancient and modern activities within the tomb. Additionally, more information is presented on photogrammetry in KV 11 as well as a provisional sketch of a site management plan centered on the digitization of a visitors’ itinerary. The work was carried out under the supervision of the Egyptian Mi...

More precisely, it addresses the general issue of five private elite tombs (rock-cut tombs and mastabas) of the 5th and the 6th Dynasties at the Saqqara cemetery, as an attempt to in-depth analysis and understanding of the various levels of relationship between the elite members of the central apparatus at the top of the Egyptian society, through their tombs viewed as monumental funerary symbols of prestige and power. It is a three-part study focused in the first one on pursuing the process of the genesis and evolution of the Egyptian central elite and its funerary monuments and symbolism on several levels, as it developed in the complex and profound framework of the socio-political and religious-funerary transformations that marked the central authority of Ancient Egypt and the unified state throughout the Old Kingdom, and particularly in its late part. The particular features of this phenomenon are exemplified in a detailed presentation and analysis in the second part, where, together with essential information provided on their owners, are described five tombs: two rock-cut tombs of the 5th Dynasty medium-rank elite members Niankhkhnum & Khnumhotepp, and Irukaptah, and three impressive in size and grandeur mastabas of the 6th Dynasty highest central elite, the viziers Kagemni, Mereruka and Mehu. At the same time, the study also raises the issue of the relationship between life and death in the Egyptian mindset, the latter understood as a continuation of life on an invisible plane. The third part of the study, in its abbreviated form, contains a minimal yet suggestive selection of photographs the author has taken during her last six-year explorations at Saqqara cemetery, in the area of the tombs subject to research and analysis. Most of them are exterior photographs of the area and of the five tombs with which I chose to exemplify the analysis in its current form. However, I also chose some representative interior details of larger shots from each tomb. Where appropriate, I provided my transliteration and translation of each extant inscription. Finally, in the last part, the author proposes an EXCURSUS: DEATH IS NOT THE END on the possible links between the latest discoveries in the medical field on near-death experiences and the hypothesis that the ancient Egyptian approach to the afterlife was influenced by this very type of experience..
