Just a 3d-reconstruction I have done based on published plans and my own look on the site. Mongialino is a quite exceptional castle, especially its tower. In my eyes it must be viewed along with the famous buildings that were erected until 1250 by emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen in Italy and Sicily. The drawing has not been published yet.

The Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage of the National Research Council, in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Castles - section of Basilicata, has designed and developed the digital Atlas of Castles of Basilicata. This Atlas, named BasiliCastle, aims at being a concrete contribution to the knowledge, fruition and promotion of the fortified architectural heritage of Basilicata. It includes a WebGIS and an App. The WebGIS is based on free geographical data and it is shared and supported by OpenStreetMap platform. The App provides users with a detailed geographical data, the historical and architectural description, pictures and 3D models of the castles. BasiliCastle has been developed using an Open Source environment and allows to share all the data which are fully available to users.

Defensive Architecture of the Mediterranean. XV to XVIII centuries / Vol VI, 2017
The topic presented in this paper is part of a wider research network about the Elban fortification system that last year has produced two works discussed during the Italian edition of the FortMED 2016. The research proposed this year has the will to give the actual state of remains of the Fortress of Giove near Rio nell'Elba (Livorno, Italy). The fortress was built in 1459 from the Appiani family, at that time authority of the Elba Island. Initially it was rectangular shaped with a scarped wall and a dry moat all around its perimeter and a fortified tower with the entrance on the North façade. The fortress was destroyed first by the Ottoman pirate Dragut in 1533 and decisively from the Spanish governor of Porto Azzurro, Mouroy de Pinel. The aim of the digital survey, operated with a 3D Laser Scanner and a professional photographic equipment, is to have a complete coverage of the entire structure, without forgiving the masonry texture, useful to bring hypothesis about its original shape and eventual architectural changes. Also this study will contributed to complete the panoramic view of the Elban fortifications started in 2016 for initiative of the Architecture Department of the Florence University.

The castle of Belcastro (Catanzaro, Italy) is an interesting palimpsest of typologies, constructive and defence techniques, and also for repair and restoration, which documents the transformations of the fortification from the origin probably the 13th century up to the recent works of restoration. Built on the upper part of a small historical centre, the castle is the most important attraction and, with its massive Donjon, it overlooks the valley, characterizing a landscape which is rich in fortifications. The essay traces the phases of the project of conservation promoted in 2005 by the local administration in collaboration with the University of Reggio Calabria. The main purpose of the project, which is now almost complete, is to integrate the technical tools and methods for conservation of the ancient structures with the strategies for the reuse of the fortification, fully respecting what remains of the original construction. By preserving all the traces of the past, the proj...

The Santa Maria dellʼAlto tower in Nardò (Lecce, Italy) represents one of the many types of coastal towers of the ancient Terra dʼOtranto province. It was built between 1568 and 1569 becoming part of the defensive system of the Ionian coast of Salento against the Turkish threat. The architectural survey ad analysis of the tower allowed us to investigate constructive elements, wall discontinuities, additions, subtractions and functional modification in order to understand the phases and the change of the structure over the centuries. Digital photogrammetry and infrared photography have been useful to elaborate a mapping of all the surface degradation and of the different construction materials. The information collected will be used for a restoration and environmental qualification project in order to offer new features to a building abandoned for years. The final phase of the work involved the creation of contributions in 3D Computer Graphics to offer a graphic and documented visualization of the achieved results.
