Laboratory Information System (LIS) is a crucial component in modern healthcare, facilitating efficient management and organization of laboratory data, workflows, and processes. This abstract provides an overview of the essential functionalities and benefits of a Laboratory Information System. It outlines its role in streamlining laboratory operations, enhancing data accuracy, improving patient care, and supporting decision-making processes for healthcare professionals. Additionally, it discusses the integration of LIS with other healthcare systems, adherence to regulatory standards, and emerging trends in laboratory informatics. This abstract aims to underscore the significance of LIS in advancing healthcare delivery and patient outcomes through effective information management and utilization in laboratory settings.

The nature of pathology services is changing under the combined pressures of increasing workloads, cost constraints and technological advancement. In the face of this, laboratory systems need to meet new demands for data exchange with clinical electronic record systems for test requesting and results reporting. As these needs develop, new challenges are emerging especially with respect to the format and content of the datasets which are being exchanged. If the potential for the inclusion of intelligent systems in both these areas is to be realised, the continued dialogue between clinicians and laboratory information specialists is of paramount importance. Requirements of information technology (IT) in pathology, now extend well beyond the provision of purely analytical data. With the aim of achieving seamless integration of laboratory data into the total clinical pathway, 'Informatics' - the art and science of turning data into useful information - is becoming increasingly i...

Background: There has been little formal analysis of laboratory systems in resource-limited settings, despite widespread consensus around the importance of a strong laboratory infrastructure. Objectives: This study details the informational challenges faced by the laboratory at Kamuzu Central Hospital, a tertiary health facility in Malawi; and proposes ways in which informatics can bolster the efficiency and role of low-resource laboratory systems. Methods: We evaluated previously-collected data on three different aspects of laboratory use. A four-week quality audit of laboratory test orders quantified challenges associated with collecting viable specimens for testing. Data on tests run by the laboratory over a one yearperiod described the magnitude of the demand for laboratory services. Descriptive information about the laboratory workflow identified informational process breakdowns in the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases and was paired with a 24-hour sample of laboratory da...
