I established a Facebook group to provide some ongoing interaction around my current research. The group was an excellent medium for networking and even bringing people together for a focus group. Yet, it fell short of building a sociality, a group that continued to interact and discuss what had been brought up in person. I explore the processes involved in this endeavor.

Online focus groups: A valuable alternative for hospitality research?2019 •
Purpose - This paper tests the idea generation capabilities of online text-based focus groups versus traditional in-person focus groups using sustainability in the hospitality industry as the idea generation topic. Idea generation quantity and quality are analyzed and the theoretical and practical implications for the hospitality industry are discussed. Methodology - An experimental study tested the quality of ideas generated by online and in-person focus groups. Participants were purposively sampled from the hospitality program at a large southeastern United States university and randomly assigned into one of two treatment groups: online text-based or traditional in-person focus groups. During both treatment groups participants generated ideas focused on sustainability in the hospitality industry. Findings - The online focus group generated a comparable quantity of ideas, as well as a similar average quality of ideas and number of good ideas. Practical Implications - The generation of ideas and the selection of opportunities drive the innovation process through which firms can strengthen their competitive advantage and maintain and grow market share and profitability. The results of this study may assist hospitality firms in determining which form of qualitative research delivers the highest return on investment, by generating the best ideas at the lowest cost. Originality - This paper breaks new ground by assessing the effectiveness of idea generation in online versus traditional focus groups, comparing both the quantity and quality of ideas generated from an experimental study employing random assignment. Keywords - Qualitative Methods, Focus Groups, Idea Generation, Sustainability, Crowdsourcing Paper type - Research Paper
Conducting discovery-oriented qualitative research about the life experiences of hard-to-reach individuals posed several challenges for recruiting participants and collecting rich textual data. In a study pertaining the experiences of Third Culture Kids (TCKs), we explored the benefits of the social media, such as Facebook as a platform to collect data. TCKs are individuals who define their sense of belonging to the third culture trailing their parents moving across borders during their developmental years. Adult TCKs live in many different countries, and accessing and interviewing respondents could be a difficult and costly endeavor. In this article, the authors share their experience conducting online, asynchronous focus groups using a Facebook platform. We reflect upon the process of setting up a secret Facebook focus group for research purposes, recruiting participants, rapport building between facilitator and participants, monitoring and keeping track of participants’ responses, and the dynamics emerging within an online focus group. We also discuss the novelty, limitations, and benefits of the Facebook focus group as an emerging mode for collecting qualitative data from hard-to-reach participants.

Lessons Learned from Conducting Group-Based Research on Facebook2016 •
As computers and alternatives of communication become more widespread, researchers are beginning to turn to new approaches to conduct data collection. A frequently used technique for collecting preliminary data or follow-up research is focus groups. The present study compared two types of computer-based focus groups with traditional face-to-face focus groups. The two types of computer-based focus groups utilized a chat room environment and laptop computers to facilitate the discussions. The two computer conditions included one in which participants could see and hear each other (computer-mediated) and another in which barriers and noise-canceling headphones blocked such access to social cues (Internet-simulated). The conditions were designed such that the face-to-face condition would have the highest social presence, the computer-mediated would have a moderate level of social presence, and the Internet-simulated would have the lowest social presence. It was believed that the level o...

Are hospitals our friends? An exploratory study on the role of Facebook in hospital organizations' dialogic communication2020 •
Rooted in the dialogic public relations model, the aim of this paper was to analyze the way in which hospital organizations use Facebook to communicate and build relationships with their patients and followers. Using a content analysis of Facebook profiles, there is a reflection on how dialogic principles are applied in the management of Facebook by hospitals in Portugal. Special attention will be paid to communication regarding the Zika virus, which was of public interest at the time the empirical analysis was carried out. The study demonstrates that Portuguese hospitals are present on Facebook but do not use the social network dialogically or to communicate about topical themes of public interest.
With new technologies, new relational spaces have been configured. Virtual communications, characterized by exchange mediated by virtual devices, have given rise to modern forms of communication, also creating new social contexts. The latest ISTAT survey (2015) shows that web is an important tool for social interaction; for more than half of Internet users (56,1%) it's mediated from social networks. This work wants to open a reflection about communication and online relationships mediated from facebook groups. In particular, an ethnographic observation of a thematic facebook group has been realized.
As one of the largest social networking sites in the world, Facebook holds a great potential for promoting health. In this exploratory study, we analyzed 1352 messages posted to an active Facebook diabetes group to identify the characteristics of the group. The results revealed that the group was international in nature. Users overcame language barriers to communicate with people with similar conditions. Users’ interactions were structured around information, emotion, and community building. They exchanged medical and lifestyle information, and highly valued their peers’ personal experiences, opinions, and advice. They also demonstrated a positive attitude toward the reality of living with diabetes and generously provided encouragements and affirmations to one another. Great efforts were made to maintain the proper operation of the community by the administrator and a group of core members. As a result, the group was shaped as a social network where peer users share social support, cultivate companionship, and exert social influence. Based on the results, we discussed future directions for research of health communities in a highly connected world.
