La Tempesta andò in scena a corte nel 1611 – l’anno in cui Giacomo I fu costretto a sciogliere quel Parlamento cui nel 1609 aveva notificato che “i Re non sono soltanto i Luogotenenti di DIO sulla terra, e siedono sul trono di DIO, ma da DIO stesso sono chiamati Dei … giacché esercitano una sorta di potere Divino sulla terra”. Nel dibattito parlamentare dei mesi precedenti “tutti i temi su cui si sarebbe poi combattuta la Guerra Civile erano venuti allo scoperto” (McElwee). Il “cane blasfemo” del titolo è il Nostromo che nella scena iniziale sfida un Re a placare la tempesta con la sua “autorità”, dimostrando una sorta di potere divino sulle acque – altrimenti re e corte devono “togliersi dai piedi” e “ringraziare di essere vissuti tanto a lungo”. Poiché il miracolo non avviene, i rapporti del Re con Dio non appaiono suffragati da prove empiriche e la regalità per diritto divino è in procinto di affondare – come di fatto avverrà tre decenni dopo. Il “rozzo mago” è Prospero, che (a differenza del Re) non solo è in grado di placare la tempesta e “affondare il mare nella terra”, ma che alla fine del dramma dice di aver resuscitato i morti, aggiungendo: “but this rough magic I here abjure”. Se la sfida del Nostromo ha del blasfemo (il prodigio richiesto al Re è analogo a quello di Mosè) le parole di Prospero (che ricalcano quelle della strega Medea in Ovidio) non sono potenzialmente da meno. Se resuscitare i morti è una “rozza magia”, non saranno rozzi maghi, oltre che Prospero e Medea, tutti coloro che l’hanno fatto, a cominciare dal caso più celebre in assoluto – Cristo? Che “Cristo non è un Dio ma solo un mago, uno stregone, un impostore” che “riuscì a compiere i miracoli a lui attribuiti in forza di arti magiche”, lo aveva scritto nel secondo secolo Celso, aggiungendo: “non è un’infamia considerare, sulla base delle stesse azioni, uno Dio, gli altri stregoni?” L’argomento diventa topico in quella cultura “libertina” che nel secolo XVII, fondendo la tradizione averroistica col machiavellismo e lo scetticismo, giunge a una totale (anche se dissimulata) demistificazione della monarchia per diritto divino, spianando la via all’illuminismo radicale. E in quella cultura, appunto, i fondatori delle religioni sono dei conoscitori della natura che, spacciando per miracoli le loro magie, assoggettano i popoli dei primordi. Il mago Prospero, che con la sua “Arte” può resuscitare i morti e affondare il mare nella terra, fornisce prestazioni analoghe a quelle sia di Cristo che di quel Mosè “allevato in tutte le arti degli Egiziani”, cui secondo Marlowe “fu cosa facile abusare degli Ebrei, che erano un popolo rozzo & grossolano”. Se nella scena iniziale, crudamente naturalistica, la monarchia è sull’orlo del naufragio, alla fine, dopo molti incantesimi, l’ordine è ristabilito – perfino il Nostromo bestemmiatore è convinto che delle potenze divine abbiano provveduto alla salvezza della nave e del Re. Ma ciò vale solo per i personaggi sulla scena, cui Ariele risulta invisibile, e che dunque non possono che interpretare come “miracoli” soprannaturali la serie di “tricks” commissionatigli da Prospero. Ma lo spettatore, se non cede a un’anti-brechtiana Einfühlung, non può che constatare che non di miracoli si tratta, ma, appunto, di trucchi. Secondo Machiavelli, caldamente approvato da Bacone, quando un “corpo misto” (sia esso una “sètta” o un “regno”) dà segni di imminente rovina, l’unico modo per farlo sopravvivere è la “riduzione ai princìpi” – e cioè la riproduzione di quegli eventi straordinari che ne hanno permesso la fondazione. La teoria verrà sviluppata da Naudé nelle Considérations politiques sur les coups d'Etat. Questi coups sono quelli con cui il principe riesce a conservare il declinante potere del suo Stato, e Naudé è persuaso che “è giusto ed anzi necessario ritenere che ciò che è servito alla fondazione degli Stati serve anche alla loro conservazione”. Louis Marin, commentando questa “teoria barocca dell’azione politica”, osserva che il colpo di stato del principe “rappresenta” e “ri-presenta” quei “fatti meravigliosi” che hanno costituito in passato il fondamento della sua forza – essi sono una “apocalisse della sua origine”. Nella Tempesta la monarchia iure divino viene ristabilita grazie a una serie di prodigi, alcuni dei quali ricordano i miracoli fondativi di quella “sètta” giudaico-cristiana che nel secolo XVII continuava ad essere il fondamento delle monarchie. Il dramma può così sortire effetti divergenti. Se lo spettatore si identifica simpateticamente senza residui con ciò che avviene sulla scena, il prodigio della riduzione ai princìpi funzionerà anche per lui. Altrimenti quelli con cui Prospero “infetta la mente” dei personaggi in scena, manipolandoli a suo piacimento, si rivelano non dei miracoli, ma dei trucchi, che a loro volta assomigliano a trucchi più antichi. Di fronte alla rozza magia di Prospero lo spettatore è libero di lasciarsi incantare, come i “rozzi” Ebrei di cui un tempo, secondo Marlowe ed altri, “abusò” Mosè. Ma per gli stessi motivi può anche iniziare a se désabuser – in tal modo il teatro inglese batte un percorso davvero “inedito” che lo porta a oltrepassare sia il Rinascimento che il Barocco…
