Undermining the genealogical thesis of an engendering of literature from myth, critical approaches undertaken in the 1980s have stressed the variety of meanings and uses of the term in Greek texts, and have refused essentializing the term. Hans Blumenberg’s work came out of such a critical tradition and focused on « the work on myth » (Arbeit am Muthos), which is also « mythwork ». Once one refuses to grant myth an originary status, one has to confront the question « how do myths come into being ? » After analyzing, in recent criticism, some of the critical displacements from « mythocriticsm » towards a « poetics of myths » and « mythopoetics », I come back to a hypothesis put forth by Claude Lévi-Strauss at the end of Mythologiques (1971) : « all individual works are potential myths, but what eventually actualizes their mythism is the fact that they are adopted on a collective mode ». Backing my own analysis on a reading of the book Ismail Kadaré devoted to Hamlet, a modern myth, I define three criteria of the « becoming-myth » of a given work. The first one is the presence of scandal in the work in question, a presence whose link to mythology has been pointed out by Marcel Detienne. The second one is the subversion or the dissolution of authorship – as authority moves from the poet, the writer towards the hero. The third and last one is the encounter between the work’s hero and what Kadaré, after Deleuze, calls the « missing people », i.e. the people who identify, on a collective mode, with the hero in his singularity. Along with these proposals the essay offers a critical assessment of recent bibliography on the subject, which points out that the split remains between works characterized by essentialism and refering to Jung, Eliade, Campbell and Durand, and works that, in the wake of post-structuralism and the deconstruction conducted by Vernant, Veyne, Detienne, Calame etc., focus on the reception of classical texts.
