Methods, about Rabbi Hayim of Brisk
“Two categories” – this expression of Rabbi Hayim has
become accepted in yeshiva circles. Through his analysis
he would demonstrate two elements of a given law or a
halakhic concept: e.g, subject vs. object; a category in
personam vs. a category in rem; a category related to an
action vs. a category related to the item on which an
action is performed; a general category vs. a particular
category. Sometimes both categories are pertinent and
one should determine the scope of each; at other times,
the analysis seeks to clarify whether there are indeed two
categories or only one, and if so – which one. Often the
controversy between two talmudic sages or medieval
authorities revolves around the question of which
category is applied to the issue at stake. Either way,
matters are clarified, blurred boundaries fall apart – and
several difficult questions and contradictions melt away.

3. Maimonides, Laws of Prayer, 4
1. Five things are mandatory for prayer [lit.: prevent one
from praying], even though the time [for prayer] has
arrived: (1) the purification of one’s hands; (2) the
covering of nakedness; (3) the purity of the place of
prayer; (4) things that might bother and distract; and (5)
the concentration (kavvanah) of one's heart.
15. Concentration – what is implied? Any prayer that is
not [recited] with concentration is not prayer. If a person
prays without concentration, he must repeat his prayers
with concentration. …
16. What is meant by concentration? One should clear his
mind of all thoughts and envision himself standing before
the Divine Presence.

Rabbeinu Hayim Halevi al HaRambam, Laws of
Prayer, 4:31
It seems that there are two types of concentration
(kavvanah) in prayer. One is concentration on the
meaning of the words, and this [concentration] is derived
from the [general halakhic] category of concentration.
The other is to concentrate on the fact that one is standing
in prayer before the Lord, as he [Maimonides] writes in
chapter 4: “One should clear his mind from all thoughts
and envision himself standing before the Divine
Presence.” The latter is not derived from the [general
halakhic] category of concentration but from the very
essence of the act of praying. Namely, if one is not aware
of the fact that he is standing before the Lord in prayer –
no act of prayer has taken place, and that person is acting
unconsciously, to which, [legally speaking,] the category
of “action” does not apply. Necessarily, this type of
concentration is mandatory [i.e. a necessary component]
for all the parts of prayer, for wherever a person acts
unconsciously he is considered one who has not prayed
at all, as if he skipped the words. It is obvious that
regarding the very essence of prayer all 19 blessings are
האחת.ונראה לומר דתרי גווני כוונות יש בתפלה

mandatory, and only where he concentrates on his
actions, is he aware of them, knowing that he is standing
in prayer. However, if he does not think about the
meaning of the text – the requirement of additional
concentration, a particular category within [the laws of[
prayer alone – then the talmudic law as discussed in
Berakhot fol. 34 applies. [According to that law, only
concentration in the first blessing is mandatory].
5. Hazon Ish, Comments, ibid:
This is [practically] impossible, because the moment a
person reflects and his mind thinks about anything
whatsoever, he will obviously be distracted and fail to
achieve the concentration required by Maimonides. The
Sages have already said in Baba Batra 164b that
contemplation in prayer is a duty that every person fails
to fulfill every day. …
And were we not [committed to] the words of the great
scholar we would interpret that in chapter 4, Maimonides
is speaking about the principle of prayer and its [general]
meaning. However, the standards that the Sages deemed
to be mandatory he articulated in chapter 10. In the
Talmud, too, these laws are not taught in the same place.
Maimonides quoted the words of the Sages which laud
concentration. Not all of these [statements], however, are
mandatory.
