Furthermore, this book analyses their art, expressed on usual objects and body, and defined for the first time as “geometrical-abstract art” and respectively as “ephemeral usual art” and “ephemeral living art”: its characteristics and decoded motifs are deepened, such as the symbol of the “good eye” in a circle shape defined also for the first time as “eye of the source”. It enlightens how this art reveals the deep cultural identity of the Mauritanian nomads and by the same of the Mauritanians of today. Moreover, it has the audacity to get to the heart of the real causes of the Mauritanian nomads’ current challenges (sedentarization and westernization): worldwide and regional climatic warming, overpopulation and (economic and cultural) globalization. Finally, it brings detailed information about the future of the nomads and to what extent they are still the pillars and heart of the current Mauritanian society. 9) Shape of the book: The book has 552 pages and contains 102 illustrations including: a) 11 colour maps; b) 58 colour photographs inside the book; c) 2 colour photographs for the front and back cover; d) 28 designs, out of which 5 colour and 23 black & white designs; e) and 3 tables. Then, in 1986, she got the First Class Honours for a post-graduate pre-PhD thesis (DEA) in Philosophy of Art and Culture at the University of Panthéon-Sorbonne Paris 1 (France) with the subject: L’Identité culturelle des nomades mauritaniens (translation: The Cultural Identity of the Mauritanian Nomads). Furthermore, she spent nine months of her life in Mauritania through several stays from 1981 to 1992, during which she got acquainted with and was interested in the Mauritanian culture. Therefore, through some exhaustive research work, she participated in the completion and update of Nomads of Mauritania. 11) Synopsis: Just a few decades ago, the great majority of Mauritanians were still nomads, living and moving in the Saharan desert. Nowadays, they represent less than 2 % of the entire Mauritanian population, which however keeps the traditions and culture of the nomads. From where, when and from whom does the nomadic Mauritanian cultural identity originate? How is it still strongly present in the current society and how does the Mauritanian nomadic art express it? Firstly, the presentation of the Mauritanian nomads’ geographical environment, characterized by its desertification, enables to realize their way of life (nomadism), diet, housing and crafts; whereas the original history of their country enlightens on the origins and present cohabitation of different ethnic communities, their cultural and religious influences and contributions; thus, the caste system, language, religious beliefs and values of the nomads. Once these detailed data defined, the cultural identity of the Mauritanian nomads appears clearly and is particularly revealed through their art, materially expressed on the usual objects and body and defined for the first time as a “geometrical-abstract art” and respectively as “ephemeral usual art” and “ephemeral living art”. The characteristics of this art are detailed regarding its artistic tendency, perspective, dimension, suggested ideas and the meanings of some designs, like the motif of the “good eye” defined also for the first time as “eye of the source”. Furthermore, facing the climatic warming, overpopulation and worldwide (economic and cultural) globalization, what has become of the nomads of Mauritania today? Finally, despite their almost extinction, in which manner are they still the pillars and heart of the Mauritanian current society? 12) Synopsis by chapter: 121) Synopsis Chapter 1: GEOGRAPHY OF MAURITANIA: The geography of Mauritania is based on a paradox. While the country is characterized mainly by an arid and bare desert, it possesses, in addition to salt mines and abundant fishing resources, hidden wealth, of which some have been known since Antiquity: minerals and underground water. Was the environment of the Mauritanian nomads the same over time? What factors have brought the desertification in the country? Moreover, whereas the Mauritanian nomads were adapted to their desert environment since the first millennium, how have the droughts and advance of the desert, henceforth expanding even towards south, affected their lives since 1970? 4 Presentation Nomads of Mauritania - June 2019 122) Synopsis Chapter 2: HISTORY OF MAURITANIA: The nomads of Mauritania have a long and rich history dating back to the Palaeolithic and Antiquity. Firstly, you will learn about their ancestors at the origin of the present cohabitation of various ethnic communities and the contributions, which they brought to the current Mauritanian nomadic culture. Then, you will understand why the Moors have taken the lead of the Mauritanian society by their language, religion and values and how they adapted to the progressive desertification of the Sahara by being the key-actors of the trans-Saharan trade, making various African empires flourish in the south and giving rise to the Almoravids. Finally, the strong opposition of the Mauritanian nomads to the colonization of their country until the independence reveals why their culture is so strongly rooted into the current Mauritanian society. 123) Synopsis Chapter 3: NOMADISM: THE MAURITANIAN NOMADS’ WAY OF LIFE: Nomadism, in link with the progressive desertification of Mauritania, thus called “climatic nomadism” and more precisely “desert nomadism”, has become the way of life of the Mauritanian nomads. This chapter is a reflection about nomadism: its different types, factors of appearance, influences on the lives of the nomads (occupations, caste system, housing, objects, clothing, and diet) and its consequences in the West-African culture through the Mauritanian nomads. How has nomadism shaped the everyday life of the Mauritanian nomads? To what extent through nomadism have they influenced the culture of West Africa? 124) Synopsis Chapter 4: SOCIETY OF CASTES AMONG THE NOMADS: The history, through the cohabitation of various ethnic communities, and the way of life, “desert nomadism”, of the nomads of Mauritania have influenced their social organization into a caste system, which remained the same over time until 1981, year of the official abolition of slavery in the country. What were the roles and hierarchy of the various castes within the nomadic Mauritanian society before 1981? Have the castes totally disappeared within the current Mauritanian society despite other laws since 1981? 125) Synopsis Chapter 5: NUTRITIONAL PREOCCUPATIONS OF THE NOMADS: In a mainly desert environment, how have the nomads of Mauritania succeeded to survive since the first millennium? The presentation of their nutritional preoccupations is essential to understand their basic resources at the origin of their crafts and so precious for their everyday life, transportation and occupations. 126) Synopsis Chapter 6: MATERIAL PREOCCUPATIONS OF THE NOMADS: Nomadism has influenced the housing of the Mauritanian nomads, who must be able to carry their housing and furniture, composed principally by the tent and mats. How and by whom are these lightweight materials made? Further, you will also learn about the protocols of living under the tent, the arrangement of tents within a nomadic camp, the social life and hospitality, which the tent can bring. 127) Synopsis Chapter 7: CRAFTS OF THE NOMADS: The objects and crafts of the nomads of Mauritania are few, mainly lightweight and adapted to their way of life. They are not only useful for their everyday life, but also most of them are the supports of their art. What are these objects? What materials are they made of and by whom? You will understand why the livestock occupies a preponderant position among nomads, as leather and wool are the main sources of their objects, then wood coming from the south of the country for special items, metal for weapons or precious objects like jewellery and terracotta for cooking purpose. In addition, where does the expression of the “blue men of the desert” come 5 Presentation Nomads of Mauritania - June 2019 from and how are clothes ironed without charcoal in a camp? Finally, what has become of the crafts of the Mauritanian nomads within the current increasingly sedentary, internationalized and westernized society? 128) Synopsis Chapter 8: CULTURAL IDENTITY OF THE MAURITANIAN NOMADS: The cultural identity of the nomads of Mauritania is very close to that of the Moors as a result of their environment, history, nomadism and social system. However, the other Mauritanian ethnicities have also influenced the religious beliefs, language, values and some social practices, like the women’s role in the nomadic society, giving rise to a specific cultural Mauritanian identity hereafter presented. Furthermore, how is it revealed through the “geometrical-abstract art” of the Mauritanian nomads, which is materially expressed and defined for the first time as “ephemeral usual art” and “ephemeral living art”? What are the characteristics of this art and the meanings of some artistic patterns, like the magical circular motif of the “good eye”, rather defined also for the first time as “eye of the source”? 129) Synopsis Chapter 9: WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE MAURITANIAN NOMADS? : The Mauritanian nomads have included at first the Moorish camp leaders and their members, who belong to noble tribes, warriors and marabouts, taking tributaries along with them in their movements: artisans, griots, harratins and hunters. Traditionally, they travelled the desert according to the favours of nature and economic imperatives and lived in movable tents, mainly on trade, breeding, salt production from opencast mines and dates from oases. Nowadays, they only represent 1.9 % of the Mauritanian population in 2013. While almost all the tributaries have become sedentary, who are these nomads? Where are they? What do they do? Where have the Mauritanian nomads gone and what are their place and influence within the Mauritanian society today? 13) Table of contents: Maps of Africa and Mauritania........................................................................................................................................ 1 FOREWORDS ..................................................................................................................................................................... 3 INTRODUCTION .............................................................................................................................................................. 7 Chapter 1:............................................................................................................................................................................. 11 GEOGRAPHY OF MAURITANIA ............................................................................................................................... 11 1.
