On the occasion of the 30th edition of the

Claudio Abbado and The New.
musicale.
Claudio Abbado was interested and concerned in
any form of musical creativity. He steadily opened
his mind to everything new in the cultural sphere,
reflecting this attitude in his artistic activity as well
as development of musical research whatsoever.
fenomeno statico e immutabile, bensì come
essenziale, in varie forme, promuovendo iniziative
rivolte alla diffusione dei nuovi linguaggi musicali
come Wien Modern a Vienna, i cicli tematici dei
Berliner Philharmoniker, gli incontri “Musica/
Realtà” di Reggio Emilia, “Musica nel nostro
tempo”, Milano Musica.
The vision of music as a living phenomenon in
constant renewal is inherent in the lesson of
Claudio Abbado, who never treated the music
of the past as a static and immutable museum
but as works to be examined afresh, searching
new paths for the future. Music of today, never
repertoire, is the cipher of Claudio Abbado's
interpretations. The numerous scores delivered,
and the creative collaboration with a number of
composers are framed in a continuity from past
to the future. The identical tension towards the
new is mirrored in Claudio Abbado's interest for
historically informed musical practice, which has
also led to a profound revision of the editorial
criteria on scores and orchestral material. Claudio
Abbado also played an essential role, albeit
indirectly, as an organiser, promoting initiatives
aimed at spreading new musical languages such
as Wien Modern in Vienna, the thematic cycles
of the Berliner Philharmoniker, “Musica/Realtà”
Meetings in Reggio Emilia, “Musica nel nostro
tempo” and Milano Musica.

L’aneddoto,
spesso raccontato, rivela come Abbado sia stato
naturalmente incline all’espressione musicale
compositori contemporanei come Giorgio Federico
nuova musica in Italia, a cominciare dagli Incontri
a Luigi Nono e a Maurizio Pollini, apriva all’ascolto
pregiudizi culturali e abitudini sociali radicate.
Quest’esperienza è stata poi trasferita in tutte le
Winter 1944, a young music lover writes
“Viva Bartók” on the wall of his house. The
political police become suspicious and start
an investigation. The boy’s parents manage to
convince the blackshirts that those words are
merely the expression of his youthful enthusiasm
for a composer, and the young Claudio Abbado
gets away with it. The oft-told anecdote reveals
how Abbado was naturally inclined towards
the musical expression of his time. Curiosity
and interest in all that is new, different and
unconventional are constant features of his
artistic career. Even before embarking on the
path of conducting, Abbado devoted himself to
performing the works of modern composers with
the Conservatory’s chamber music ensemble. As
a conductor, he unhesitatingly agreed to perform
works by contemporary composers such as Giorgio
Federico Ghedini and Paul Hindemith, while in
1965 he engaged with the world of avant-garde
music by conducting Giacomo Manzoni’s Atomtod
at the Piccola Scala. In addition to the renewal
of the repertoire initiated at La Scala during his
tenure as musical and artistic director, Claudio
Abbado was a leading figure in pioneering
initiatives for the diffusion and dissemination
of new music in Italy, starting with the “Musica/
Realtà” Meetings in Reggio Emilia, in which,
together with Luigi Nono and Maurizio Pollini, he
made music available to an audience that was
new from a social and cultural point of view, with
the idea of breaking down cultural prejudices and
deep-rooted social habits. This experience was
then transferred to all the cities where Abbado
worked, in Milan with the season “Musica nel
nostro tempo”, in Ferrara with the creation of
Ferrara Musica, in Vienna with Wien Modern, in
Berlin with the thematic cycles.

forme espressive. Claudio Abbado ha vissuto
l’epoca della prassi musicale storicamente
informata e della riscoperta delle fonti originali
delle partiture. Non va trascurato, per esempio,
l’influsso di un musicista come Nikolaus
Harnoncourt sulle sue idee interpretative.
critiche.
Claudio Abbado’s interpretive research always
began with a meticulous study of the text,
supported by a complex system for memorising
scores he had learned from Hans Swarowsky
and perfected over time according to his own
needs. The scores in the Claudio Abbado bequest
preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin bear the
mark of this study stratified over time, alongside
his legendary slips of paper with the mnemonic
charts.
An important chapter, yet to be thoroughly
investigated, is Claudio Abbado’s relationship with
the wide and varied world of communication.
Claudio Abbado’s career developed in an era of
quick and profound transformation of the media,
driven by the sweeping technical innovation of the
second half of the twentieth century.
Within this theme, another important element
of reflection concerns publishing. Every score
studied by Claudio Abbado was a source of
new questions and stimulated the search for
new forms of expression. Claudio Abbado lived
during the era of historically informed musical
practice and of the rediscovery of original score
sources. For example, the influence of a musician
like Nikolaus Harnoncourt on Claudio Abbado’s
interpretive ideas should not be overlooked. An
important aspect of this change of mentality is
the philological approach to the great operatic
tradition, of which Claudio Abbado was the
pioneer with his historic production of the Barbiere
di Siviglia in 1969, resulting from a groundbreaking
revision of the score based on the autographs
made by Alberto Zedda, which paved the way for
the renewal of critical editions.

“I am Claudio”: those few words of introduction
defined, in that first meeting, the essence of the
man and of the maestro. My contribution to this
conference will be about sharing, reflecting and
investigating my personal experience of working
actively and proactively alongside Claudio Abbado.
His capacity of listening, his empathy, his sparing
use of words, the importance of silences, his iron
discipline, the tension towards the new, his elegant
gesture, the order, the simplicity, the attention to
detail, his calm manners and clear method, his enthusiasm are all key elements of Abbado’s personal
and professional strength. His vision of music as a
living element, always capable of renewing itself,
underlie the teachings of the maestro, who never
considered the literature of the past in a static or
repetitive way, but found in each score the richest
source to question, because it was able to provide
new answers every time.
Claudio Abbado’s interpretive research as well as
his musical creativity will lead to the idea of music as an essential and indispensable principle;
the adoption of a mindful and effective research
method, based on listening; the acquisition of techniques for mnemonic enhancement coming from
Hans Swarowsky’s school; the profound awareness
that each score, although linked to tradition, is
never to be considered as trivial repertoire, but rather as a starting point for analysis and rediscovery.
On this occasion, the process of continuity between
past and future will be examined through a selection of musical examples taken from Claudio
Abbado’s scores and chosen from the vast symphonic repertoire due to Mahler, Schumann and
Berlioz, in order to highlight the strength of some of
his choices and the potential for renewal of many
others.
In
mnemotecnica musicale e mediazione materiale.
Simply and colloquially called “foglietti” (slips of paper), Claudio Abbado’s notes constitute a considerable amount of written material that the maestro
kept in complete secrecy during his life, usually hiding them between the pages of his performance
scores. They are diagrams written in small format
pages with a steady, fast hand, the result of a process of analysis of the musical text that leads to
its compendium in a personal performing code,
which can then be memorised in the initial phases
of the study work. Much indebted to the Taktgruppenanalyse learnt by the young Abbado at Hans
Swarowsky’s school ‒ but at the same time original
in the results and solutions adopted ‒, these charts
punctuate the performance of specific works and
allow us to enter, through their analysis and contextualisation, into the heart of the maestro’s creative
workshop from a hitherto unseen point of view.
The first aim of my contribution is to offer an overview of these materials, contextualising them in relation to the conductor’s repertoire and its chronological evolution. After an examination of Abbado’s
semiographic code via a few examples (including
Il mandarino meraviglioso by Bartók and Il canto
sospeso by Nono), some hypotheses will be formulated on the role of these notes in the performing
process, with particular attention to their pragmatic-cognitive implications and their interpretive effects. Finally, we will highlight the relevance
of these materials ‒ which have not yet been addressed in the musicological discourse ‒ in relation
to broader theoretical issues, including the roles of
reading and writing within the performance process and the relationship between musical mnemonics and material mediation.

Oltre la filologia: Abbado
e la musica antica
Beyond philology: Abbado
and Early Music
spettacolo?
Claudio Abbado’s recorded output can be analyzed
under various aspects. One big question is the
following: to which degree do musicians follow
changes in style, in other words, how important is
fashion in the performing arts? The vast recorded
repertoire of Abbado can be used as evidence to answer to this question, including as it does compositions which he recorded more than once, with a considerable gap of time in between. One example is the
overture Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky, which
he recorded in 1971 for Deutsche Grammophon,
in 1988 for CBS Records Masterworks, and in 1996
again for Deutsche Grammophon.
If there are differences between these three recordings, they certainly are not the result of a general
change in style, as opposed to performances of
baroque music which since the last decade of the
20th century met a fundamental change in the
musicians’ approach not only by specialists, but by
conductors, orchestras, and musicians in general,
all of whom were stimulated primarily by Nikolaus
Harnoncourt.
In the span of his recording career, Claudio Abbado
made two recordings of the six Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach: the first one
dates from 1978, the second one from 2007. My contribution answers the question to which extent the
mentioned general shift in the performing style of
baroque music also influenced Abbado’s conducting of these masterpieces.
Gabrieli, Scarlatti, Monteverdi e Vivaldi, oltre a Bach
e Pergolesi.
Troviamo
Monteverdi e Gesualdo: quel “labirinto cromatico”
che aveva affascinato generazioni di compositori.
In the preface to Glenn Watkins’ The Gesualdo
Hex (2010), we find one of Claudio Abbado’s rare
statements on his view of the so-called “early music”. Not only does Abbado justify his approach to
Gesualdo’s music, but he finds in it common elements with a number of musicians of the past
whose works he had already conducted in the
preceding decades, as if they were all part of a
special chain of masters: something in Gesualdo’s madrigals brought him back to the sound
experiences he had already had with “a new way
of playing Mozart”, with Bach and with Pergolesi,
“another visionary genius” in whom he saw traces of Gesualdo. This rediscovery of music prior to
Mozart had begun as early as the 1970s, during his
time at La Scala, with the inclusion in his concerts
of composers such as Gabrieli, Scarlatti, Monteverdi
and Vivaldi, as well as Bach and Pergolesi.
Even in the cycles of his Berlin decade Abbado often mixed pre-classical music with contemporary
pieces, thus overcoming the “philological” idea
that people had of those repertoires. We still find
Monteverdi and Pergolesi in his programmes
alongside Elizabethan English composers and Purcell, and an interest in Greek myths reworked in
Baroque opera. But the concept of “ancient” is presented through the poetic conception expressed by
Marguerite Yourcenar: modernising the past.
Abbado’s (belated) discovery of Gesualdo did not
stem from an interest in the composer’s murky biography, as for so many 20th-century intellectuals,
but from musical reasons. He proposed an unexpected performance in Basilicata in 2004, with the
Ars Longa de la Habana ensemble discovered in
Cuba, because in those musicians he had found
the same ability to sing and play instruments at
the same time that had been the admirable art of
the “ladies of Ferrara” in the 16th century.
At the end of his preface to Watkins’ book, Abbado
identified the common line that linked ‒ in reverse
chronological order ‒ Mozart, Bach, Pergolesi,
Monteverdi and Gesualdo: that “chromatic labyrinth”
that had fascinated generations of composers.

Registrare con Claudio Abbado:
note dalla sala controllo

Recording with Claudio Abbado:
observations from the control room
During a span of almost 25 years, I collaborated
with Claudio Abbado on over 25 CD projects as Balance Engineer, Recording Producer or Executive
Producer. While this represents only a small fraction
of his total discography, I will attempt to illustrate
the role and importance recording had in Maestro
Abbado’s artistic output. In a brief outline of the
recording process, with a comparison of the “live”
versus “studio” setup and various technical options
and limiting factors, I hope to shed some light on the
mystique surrounding music recordings and to provide a context for the further discussion.
A successful recording requires team work. So,
what are the roles of the various team members
and what influence do they have on the outcome?
Is the artist the team leader or a further team player?
How do we account for differences between a concert interpretation and a recording of the same
work? What changes are possible in post-production? Can compromises be avoided? Is a recording
a distortion or an idealization of the performers’
intentions?
While some of this discussion will be general in nature, most will reflect my experience working with
Maestro Abbado and hopefully reveal a less public
side of his character and musical personality.

Parco all’Aquila e infine il progetto incompiuto
dell’Auditorium a Bologna.
(1955-56) a 1°) Caminantes...
The idea of reshaping the music space and of
designing concert halls of a new kind always
fascinated Claudio Abbado.
The most emblematic expression of this new way
of conceiving the musical space is undoubtedly
the wooden ark designed by Renzo Piano for Luigi
Nono’s Prometeo. The project was not a simple
staging, but the result of a close collaboration
between architect, composer and music director,
and was an essential component of the work.
The relationship between Claudio Abbado and
Renzo Piano continued with the conversion
of the Lingotto Auditorium into a concert hall,
inaugurated by Claudio Abbado with the Berliner
Philharmoniker in 1994, the construction of the
Auditorium del Parco in L’Aquila, and finally the
unfinished project for the Auditorium in Bologna.
However, the theme of the relationship between
music and space is also a matter of artistic
thinking, since Claudio Abbado’s first concern
as a conductor was to shape sound in the way
that best suited the needs of the score. In this
sense, the relationship with Luigi Nono, an artistic
partnership in the pursuit of a common openness
towards the new and of a necessary utopia, from
Il canto sospeso (1955-56) to 1°) Caminantes...
Ayacucho (1986-87), profoundly marked his idea of
musical listening, freed from the conventions and
passivity of the traditional concert hall.
Claudio Abbado’s generous and staunch support
of the awesome “El Sistema” project founded by
José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela ‒ a model of
inclusion and musical education unparalleled
in the world ‒ also straddles the concept of the
centrality of listening and a social vision of art.

“Almost an angel fallen from heaven”:

amico Luigi Nono, prematuramente scomparso.
Among the many composers who have crossed
Claudio Abbado’s artistic and personal path,
György Kurtág ‒ a cardinal figure in today’s music
‒ certainly deserves special attention, because of
the importance of this encounter for the careers of
both musicians.
The recent La Scala production of Fin de partie op.
42 (2018) is only the last act in a long process of
creative incubation that led the Hungarian composer to his operatic debut at the exceptional age
of ninety-two, creating great expectations in the
musical world after almost a decade of waiting.
The relationship with orchestral writing and extended forms has always been extremely conflictual, coming to fruition for the first time in the
crucial collaboration willed by Abbado in the 1990s
and prophesied by their mutual friend Luigi Nono,
who died prematurely.
Starting from the interview with the composer conducted by Angela Ida De Benedictis and Veniero
Rizzardi in 2002 at Abbado’s request, and only
recently published (2018), my contribution aims
to chronologically reconstruct the stages of their
artistic collaboration, drawing on numerous unpublished interviews with direct witnesses and with
Kurtág himself. A particular in-depth study will be
dedicated to the genesis of Grabstein für Stephan
op. 15 (1993) in its orchestral version and to that of
Stele op. 33 (1994), composed and dedicated to the
Berliner Philharmoniker and to Abbado. The role
played by the conductor in the evolution of Kurtág’s
writing and career was fundamental, creating the
conditions for him to finally compose large-scale
works: an aspect that still needs to be explored
today, thanks to a careful analysis of the modus operandi put into practice ad hoc by Abbado to foster
the Hungarian composer’s creative process.
compimento, come l’Auditorium Giovanni Agnelli
Abbado a partire dagli anni Novanta dello scorso
secolo.
In the last decades of his career, Claudio Abbado
was personally involved in the conception (and
possibly subsequent design) of a number of concert halls in Italy and abroad. These include completed architectural works, such as the Auditorium
Giovanni Agnelli in Turin (opened in 1994) and the
Auditorium del Parco in L’Aquila (opened in 2012),
as well as other projects that, that, although never
completed, have been partially developed and
have sometimes become the subject of public discussion. In the same years, Abbado explicitly introduced into his artistic practice aesthetic principles
related to issues of environmental sustainability, in
which the care of the environment, the design of
the acoustic space and the fostering of the talents
and musical inclinations of his students and the
public became more and more interrelated.
On the basis of oral testimonies, press reviews and
archival materials made available by the Claudio
Abbado Foundation, the Renzo Piano Foundation
and the Milano Musica Association, this paper offers a survey of some of the musical spaces conceived or built at the instigation of Claudio Abbado
from the 1990s onwards. The research has two objectives: on the one hand, to present a first reconstruction of the acoustic characteristics of these
venues and the cultural functions they were called
upon to perform; on the other, to investigate the
ideas about space (in a musical, cultural and environmental sense) cultivated by Abbado over the
years in collaboration with various artists, architects and cultural promoters.

Per le note, tra le note
For the notes, between the notes
“Vera fantasia creatrice”:
la collaborazione artistica
tra Claudio Abbado e Luigi Nono
“True creative imagination”:
the artistic collaboration between
Claudio Abbado and Luigi Nono
Whoever had the privilege of sharing a part of their
artistic journey with Claudio Abbado cannot but
carry with them the memory of his curiosity, enthusiasm and instinct, all qualities that invite us
to experiment, to dare, to not believe too much in
barriers.
Infinite and unexpected were the possibilities of
imagining where and how to make music, or of
playing (in the highest and most serious meaning
of this word) with the distribution and movements
of the musicians on stage. But what still amazes
those who have experienced it at first hand is the
space Abbado was able to create for and between
the notes.
Music, as we know, moves through time, but in doing so it describes gestures and architectures that
require their own space.
The freedom of movement in this space, set in a
context in which the sense of general proportion
was unparalleled, is one of the most inexplicable
miracles of this great Maestro’s musical universe.
If in the common imagination the conductor is “the
one who gives the tempo”, I’d say that Claudio was
rather the one who granted, created and “gave the
space”. The way he did so was so free, and so far
from artifice, that it did not have to be expressed by
words. And so, even on first reading, the architectural design of what we would build together was
clear and exciting.
My contribution aims to offer a reflection on the
many forms of artistic collaboration in music
between composer and conductor, through an examination of the relationship that linked three very
different conductors belonging to different generations ‒ Hermann Scherchen, Bruno Maderna and
Claudio Abbado ‒ to one of the key figures of twentieth-century music, Luigi Nono. Each of the three
artists marked a different phase in Nono’s human
and artistic biography, favouring the success or the
diffusion ‒ sometimes in personal forms ‒ of such
breakthrough works as Il canto sospeso (1955-56),
Intolleranza 1960 (1960-61), Prometeo (1981-85). At
the same time, all three have linked their names
to groups or series of compositions that are largely
not homogeneous and cannot be superimposed
within Nono’s catalogue (among them, Polifonica-Monodia-Ritmica, Epitaffi per Federico García
By comparing the dynamics that characterised
these three artistic and human partnerships,
thanks also to partly unpublished archive documentation, I aim to define the role and importance
of Claudio Abbado in the maturation of the compositional thought of Nono’s late creative phase, as
that of a collaborator always able to bring to the
highest degree of perfection, with “true creative
imagination”, the conception of the work outlined
by the composer.

Esplorando la sorgente dello spazio

Gli anni berlinesi di Claudio Abbado.
Il suo legame con i Berliner

e nella passione per la musica
Claudio Abbado’s Berlin years.
His bond with the Berliner
Philharmoniker in his work
and passion for music
A quel tempo, avevo composto
During my one and only collaboration with Claudio Abbado, in 1990, I was able to ask him about his
experience with Luigi Nono’s Prometeo. That brief
discussion had a lasting effect on my approach to
space. At that time, I had only composed for one
acousmatic space in Traiettoria, or for several simultaneous immersive spaces in Spirali. By shifting my
attention from the “container” (the room and the
classical parameters of architectural acoustics) to
the “source” (the sound emitter, an instrument or a
loudspeaker, with its position, orientation and multiple radiation patterns), a whole new expressive
realm opened up to me. A source radiates sound
from its position to the hall and the audience.
I would argue that space is a “weak” musical dimension that needs to be thought of differently
than the more familiar “strong” dimensions. However, when weak and strong dimensions co-operate,
a powerful synergy with the audience emerges:
each dimension illuminates all the others.
Starting from some of my works for spatialised
chamber music and electronics, I will show that
the succession of different spatial configurations
during the performance of a piece can follow a
dramaturgy that interacts with other properties of
a composition. This phenomenon can only be experienced during a live concert, as it depends on
the reciprocal relationship between visual, auditory
and social cues that are impossible to record on a
CD. From this point of view, the concert remains a
unique and irreplaceable event. I think this is one
of the great lessons of Claudio Abbado: his cultural
and political action has always shown that concerts are a way of being a civilisation.
Come è riuscito Claudio Abbado a mantenere e
generazioni future.
How did Claudio Abbado manage to maintain and
cultivate the magnificent sound of the Berliner
Philharmoniker in the wake of his predecessor Herbert von Karajan, and at the same time erase the
image of a tyrant in the orchestra?
How is it possible that a hundred or so concerts
conducted by him with our orchestra were unforgettable experiences for us?
More than any other maestro, he managed to
fascinate his audience.
Sometimes he was celebrated with endless ovations; at other times, there were concerts that ended in such a way that no one dared move or make
a sound after the last notes had faded. The tension
lingered in the air for a long time. The audience always left the auditorium moved, but with a feeling
of joy and enthusiasm.
Claudio was able to give us performers the feeling
of playing with great freedom, as if his musical vision were our own. Without an obstacle between
us musicians and the conductor, we were able to
make music together, with the same spirit and the
same willingness.
As a violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic, I would
like to evoke the time we spent with Claudio in the
course of my speech. I think I can say that, in addition to all the skills needed by a conductor, Claudio
Abbado had an extra dimension: his love and infinite passion for music. Thanks to this wealth, he
was able to transport us to an unearthly atmosphere.
Claudio will live on in our hearts and we feel an obligation to pass on this virtue to future generations.

Ovunque abbia lavorato, Claudio Abbado aveva
capitalistico occidentale.
Il convegno intende interrogare il presente e
proiettare concretamente verso il futuro la grande
lezione di Claudio Abbado: scelte artistiche,
politiche culturali, investimenti pubblici e privati
possono stimolare oppure deprimere la creazione
artistica.
in particolare giovani e persone appartenenti
a fasce sociali spesso lontane dai circuiti della
musica “classica”, che invariabilmente dimostrano
curiosità, interesse e una speciale sintonia proprio
per la musica di oggi. Il nuovo lascia segni. La
musica chiede e suscita dialogo.
Claudio Abbado’s legacy does not end with his
discography, but unfolds creatively in his constant
aspiration to plan for the future and break new
ground. Wherever he worked, Claudio Abbado’s
priority was to modernise the musical landscape
and open it up to contemporary culture. One of his
main concerns was the inclusion of new audiences
in the music space.
La Scala led by Claudio Abbado and Paolo
Grassi was a theatre committed to open its
doors to social classes that until then had not
participated in the artistic and cultural life of the
city. The concept of change and inclusion also
runs through Claudio Abbado’s Viennese and
especially Berlin period, which coincides with the
first decade of German reunification, fraught with
the immense problems of the transition from a
socialist system to a western capitalist one.
The conference aims to shed light on the present
situation and to project Claudio Abbado’s great
lesson into the future: artistic choices, cultural
policies, public and private investments can
stimulate or depress artistic creation. In Italy, the
issue of renewing the repertoire and of supporting
contemporary creativity is still topical. It is precisely
the success and the following enjoyed by many
European festivals of new music that demonstrate
the cultural potential of contemporary music,
especially in this first part of the 21st century, and
its ability to involve new audiences, especially
young people and people belonging to social
groups that are often far removed from classical
music circuits ‒ who invariably show curiosity,
interest and a special affinity with today’s music.
The new leaves its marks. Music demands and
provokes dialogue. Today's music encourages us to
look beyond established borders.

MICHAEL HAEFLIGER
Nato a Berlino Ovest, ha iniziato a
studiare violino e pianoforte all’età di
New York, ottenendo un Bachelor of
Music. Ha poi studiato management
all’Università di San Gallo, conseguendo
un Executive MBA nel 1999. Nel 2003
ha frequentato il General Manager
Program della Harvard Business School.
Ha lavorato per i più importanti festival
europei nel corso della sua intera
carriera, inizialmente come musicista
e, dal 1999, come Direttore esecutivo e
artistico del Festival di Lucerna. Come
e Spoleto. Nel 1986 è stato co-fondatore
del Festival Young Artists in Concert di
Davos, che ha diretto fino al 1998.
Dalla sua nomina a Lucerna all’inizio
del 1999 (il suo contratto è stato esteso
fino al 2025), ha introdotto numerose
innovazioni e ha rafforzato l’impegno del
Festival nei settori della nuova musica e
della promozione del pubblico giovanile,
sviluppando anche format di concerto
innovativi, come la serie 40min. Per
ogni Festival progetta focus artistici e
Riccardo Chailly come nuovo Direttore
musicale della Lucerne Festival Orchestra
e Wolfgang Rihm come Direttore
artistico della Lucerne Festival Academy.
Inoltre ha creato una rete internazionale
di associazioni di amici del festival,
anche negli Stati Uniti e in Giappone.
Nell’autunno del 2013, ha collaborato
con Anish Kapoor e Arata Isozaki per
avviare il progetto Lucerne Festival Ark
Nova, che prevede una sala da concerto
mobile. Questo innovativo progetto
sociale è stato creato per la popolazione
giapponese che vive nella zona colpita
dal terremoto del 2011.
Ha ricevuto molti premi, tra cui
l’European Cultural Innovation Award
e lo Swiss Society of New York Award.
Nel gennaio 2000 è stato nominato
“Global Leader for Tomorrow” dal World
Economic Forum di Davos.
Attualmente è membro del consiglio
della Fondazione Avenir Suisse, della
Fondazione Davos Festival, della
Fondazione culturale UBS e della
Fondazione Pierre Boulez, e presiede
la giuria del Credit Suisse Young Artist
Award.

has been involved with major European
festivals throughout his career, initially
as an active performing artist and,
since 1999, as the Executive and Artistic
Director of Lucerne Festival. His career as
a solo violinist included engagements in
the early 1980s at such festivals as those
in Lucerne, Interlaken, and Spoleto. In
1986 he co-founded the Young Artists
in Concert Festival in Davos, where he
served as director until 1998.
Since his appointment in Lucerne at
the beginning of 1999 (his contract
has been extended until 2025), he has
implemented numerous innovations
and has enhanced the Festival’s
commitment to the areas of new music
and the cultivation of young audiences;
he has also developed innovative
concert formats, such as the 40min
series. For each Summer Festival he
designs artistic and social-political
focuses on a specific theme, such
as the role of women in the world of
music in 2016, and the theme of Power
in 2019. Among his many initiatives
are the establishment, together with
Claudio Abbado, of the Lucerne Festival
Orchestra in 2003, as well as of the
Lucerne Festival Academy with Pierre
Boulez. Following the death of these
founders, in 2016 he initiated a new era
for both institutions, appointing Riccardo
Chailly as the new Music Director of
the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and
Wolfgang Rihm as Artistic Director of the
Lucerne Festival Academy. In addition,
he has established an international
network of Friends Associations abroad,
also in the United States and Japan. In
the fall of 2013, he teamed with Anish
Kapoor and Arata Isozaki to initiate
the Lucerne Festival Ark Nova project,
which involves a mobile concert hall.
This innovative social project was
created as a gift for the Japanese
population living in the area affected
by the 2011 earthquake.
He is the recipient of many awards,
among which the European Cultural
