Imitation within sonic arts, linguistic, musical, or otherwise, broadly defined, is a heterogeneous set of practices ranging from comical impersonation to outright counterfeit or forgery. This paper provides a taxonomy of imitation and mimicry within both language and music, dividing each into two respective categories, autographic imitation and allographic imitation, the terms for which are repurposed from Nelson Goodman’s Languages of Art.

It is my contention that understanding natural phenomena such as vocal mimicry can bolster theories of the evolution of language and music as well as inform evolutionary and naturalistic aesthetics more generally. In this commentary I present this phenomena as a case study in order to stimulate further aesthetic theorising.
In this chapter I will examine the significance and extent of extempore polyphonies in Spain during the Renaissance period, studying their diffusion as a daily practice, and their place in the musical training of young singers. The first part of the chapter will be centered on the practice and transmission of contrapunto, usually learned and performed “por razón”, that is, according to the rules of music, within Spanish capillas musicales. The second part of the chapter is concerned with the other tradition of oral polyphony, often learned and performed “por uso”, which was frequently called “cantar fabordón”.

Early seventeenth century lute improvisation — a phrase that by its mere utterance may cause debates full of uncertainties, fears and fantasies. What is proper improvisa-tion? How did they do it 360 years ago? In this article I seek to revive a systematic prac-tice of teaching ornamentation and improvisation from the Renaissance scholars — i.e. the passaggi practice — and adopt it to function as a methodology for Baroque music. This is done in order to present a practice that can be used in tuition, to have new gen-erations of musicians improvise in a comfortable manner using a broad vocabulary; to present a methodology with pedagogical, methodological and a historical value.
Among sonic interaction design practices a rising interest is given to the use of the voice as a tool for producing fast and rough sketches. Goal of the EU project SkAT- VG (Sketching Audio Technologies using Vocalization and Gestures, 2014-2016) is to develop vocal sketching as a reference practice for sound design by (i) improving our understanding on how sounds are communicated through vocalizations and gestures, (ii) looking for physical rela- tions between vocal sounds and sound-producing phenom- ena, (iii) designing tools for converting vocalizations and gestures into parametrized sound models. We present the preliminary outcomes of a vocal sketching workshop held at the Conservatory of Padova, Italy. Research through de- sign activities focused on how teams of potential designers make use of vocal imitations, and how morphological at- tributes of sound may inform the training of basic vocal techniques.

Applications of Elicited Imitation to Second Language Education2014 •
The technique of elicited imitation (EI) can be utilized in classrooms in many ways, beneficial to both teachers and learners. To begin with, teachers can extract sentences from the teaching materials and turn them into EI sentences as an achievement test to measure how much students have acquired from the lessons. Teachers can also compile sentences of different length and difficulty from authentic sources, such as speeches or news talks, to measure students’ listening and speaking proficiency. With the EI performances, teachers can gain a clear picture of learners’ linguistic abilities while scoring each repetition. For each repetition that scores between 0 to 3, teachers can gauge whether the incomplete repetition is due to weakness in ability to understand unfamiliar accent, unfamiliarity with the vocabulary or grammar, poor pronunciation, or insufficient fluency. Such information will help teachers effectively assess learners’ current linguistic abilities, whereby to provide constructive suggestions for future improvements. Moreover, EI can also be used as a learning tool for improving one’s listening and speaking skills. The technique of repeating a sentence you heard can also be called shadowing sentences (cf. Arguelles, 2009). By repeating a sentence and mimicking another’s voice, tone or intonation, one can practice on aspects such as quickly processing a sentence, reviewing or learning words and patterns, correcting pronunciation and intonation, or improving speaking fluency.
