Abstract
The idea of closing the waterways with chaimn was a method used since the Middle Ages as a defensive
measure in the military defense. It is known that for the first time in Turkish history, this came to the
fore with the Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, who changed the game of Byzantium, who closed the
Golden Horn to ships with a chain and transported the ships by Land. Some parts of this chain are still
kept in various museums in Turkey.
In addition to this, another big iron chain, which is surrounded by many mysteries on the Danube river
and is exhibited in the military museum in Vienna today.
Since it did not fit in one piece its stored in the two buildings, where it is exhibited, and it was extended
in 4 arms and laid on the ground, and it is a work of magnificent ironwork. This chain, which does not
attract much attention, sheds light on an unknown aspect of Turkish history.
In the short examination we made in the museum, it was determined that the chains were made of
wrought iron. In this respect, under suitable conditions, it does not undergo corrosion for many years.
The patina layer formed as a result of the oxidation of iron forms a black protective layer between
the iron and the atmosphere. In this article the remarkable history of the Great Danube chain and its
mysteries will be revealed.

Toplam 2973 halka
1 adet büyük halka 31pound yanı 15,5 kilo yüz ağırlık? birlikte 1255 kilo 25.11
Küçük halkanın ağırlığı ise 16 1/3 pound beraber 477 zentner yani 23.650 kilo
Tam ağırlık 502.13 x 50 kg = 25.106 kg = toplam 25 ton

getirildi.
1933’te Macaristan’a teslim edilen bir zencir parçası (60 halka ) dışında, tüm uzunluğuyla Viyana Askeri Tarih

Komuta Karargahı ve Kışlası) 1826 Vak’a-i Hayriyesinde yakıldığından kaynaklar yer almamaktadır.

THE POST CLASSIC ARABIC POETRY
Hilary Waardenburg-Kirkpatrick1
1. Introduction
In this chapter, ‘post-classical’ is taken to mean roughly from the end of the 6th/12th to the end of the
12th/18th century. This enormous period of time was regarded in the Arab world and the West for over a century
as an Age of Decline, where poetry was uninspired, repetitive and artificial. Only in the last three decades have
doubts been expressed about such an uninterrupted process of decline for six centuries – which if it were true
would surely represent a record in literary history. Investigations have started into Ayyubid, Mamluk and, to a lesser
extent, Ottoman poetry. Since so much fundamental research remains to be done, inevitably this presentation of
post-classical poetry is tentative, incomplete and uneven.
2. Sources for poetry
As in earlier periods, poets collected their own verses in Dīwāns. Sometimes their students or admirers
took on this task or completed the master’s collection after his death. But three other important sources must also
be taking into account. First, there are anthologies. Many poets and scholars collected not only their own verses
but those of others whom they admired, contemporaries as well as earlier poets. And they cast their net wide; Ibn
Ma‛ṣūm (1052-1119/1642-1708), who was born in Medina but spent most of his life in India and Iran, included
in his anthology of the poets of his own time sections on the Hijaz (his country of origin), Yemen and the Maghrib
as well as Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Iran. Even if he relied mainly on al-Maqqarī’s (d.1041/1631 ) famous anthology
of Andalusian literature, Nafḥ al-ṭīb (The scented breeze), for his selection of North African poets, this shows how
contemporary Arabic literature circulated and was read widely, not only in Arabic-speaking lands.
The second source are biographical dictionaries. Writers such as al-Ṣafadī (696-764/1297-1363) and alMuḥibbī (1061-1111/1651-1699) included copious quotations of the poetry composed by the subjects of their
biographical dictionaries; sometimes these quotations are the only source we have for the poet concerned. Muḥsin
al-Amīn (1284-1371/1867-1952), whose biographical dictionary of Shī‛ī notables covers Islamic history from the
period of the Prophet up to his own time, copied the dīwāns of poets he discovered in private libraries, and his
many-volumed A‛lām al-Shī‛a (Notables of the Shī‛a) contains page after page of the verses of individual poets, some
of them otherwise unknown.
The third source are histories. Poetry is quoted in them to commemorate or celebrate memorable events,
and although some poems, for instance those intended to encourage resistance to the Crusaders and celebrate
Muslim victories, were not composed by the greatest names in mediaeval Arabic literature, they functioned as an

effective political and religious tool.1 Various types of poetry may be involved. In Ibn Iyās’s account of the defeat
of the Mamluks and conquest of Egypt by the Ottoman sultan Selīm (922/1517), poems by the historian himself
and contemporaries of his, generally qaṣīdas but sometimes in a strophic form, are an integral part of the narrative.
More often poetry serves to comment on events already recounted.
3. The social contexts of poetry
Poets in the ‛Abbāsid era sought to make a name for themselves at court - the caliph’s court or the courts of
governors. This tradition continued in subsequent centuries. Centres of political power such as Cairo, Damascus,
and at times smaller cities with a tradition of cultured rulers such as Ḥamāh acted as magnets for poets. Even when,
after the Ottoman conquest, the center of the empire lay outside the Arab world, Arab men of letters in search of
an important position made their way to Istanbul with appropriate panegyrics in their luggage. If the Sultan did
not understand or appreciate the language, his advisors did.
Moreover, rulers from outside the Arabic-speaking world sometimes acquired an extensive Arabic culture.
A striking example from the end of this period is Dāwud Pāshā (c.1188-1267/1767–1851), the last Mamluk ruler
of Baghdad. A Georgian by birth, he came to Baghdad as a boy and worked his way up by intrigue and ruthlessness
to become governor of that province (1816-1831). He gathered round him a circle of eminent poets with whom
he remained in touch after he was deposed and moved to Istanbul. He ended his life as governor of Medina, much
.respected for his learning and knowledge of literature
and even Less illustrious centres of culture continued to exist in the cities of Egypt and geographical Syria
at times in outlying areas. Literary life in the Hijaz, famous for love poetry in the Umayyad period, experienced a
period of decline until the 8th/14th century, when it began to attract scholars and men of letters from the Maghrib
and elsewhere; in the 11th/17th century it was the home of a flourishing poetic culture.2 The Shī‛ī ruler of Jabal ‛Āmil
in today’s southern Lebanon, Nāṣīf Naṣṣār (d. 1195/1781), attracted notable poets who celebrated his victories
over his Sunnī rival in the Galilee, Ẓāhir al-‛Umar (d. 1189/1775), in heroic style.3 Some local rulers not only
encouraged poets but composed poetry themselves; one such was Emir ‛Alī ibn Khalaf al-Ḥuwayzī (fl. mid 11th/17th
century), who is described as the “national poet” of Khuzistan.4 Jurjī Zaydān (1278-1332/1861-1914), who had a
low opinion of the poetry of the Mamlūk age and an even lower one of the Ottoman age, nonetheless includes in
his History of the Letters of the Arabic Language the names of over a hundred poets from Egypt, Syria, al-Andalus, the
5
.Maghrib, Iraq, Iran and Yemen who lived in these two periods
4. The Mamluk period.
The chapter on Mamluk prose has already mentioned the process of “adabisation” and “ulamisation”,
which started already under the Ayyubids. Administrative functions previously dominated by a distinct group,
the secretaries, were increasingly taken over by religious scholars, ‘ulamā’, who also appropriated the secretaries’
cultural heritage. ‘Ulamā’ joined men of letters and administrators in composing and exchanging poetry, to acquire
recognition as members of a cultured elite, to obtain positions or other favors, or simply as an expression of
friendship. In this context the epigram of two or sometimes three lines emerged as a very popular form, ideally
suited to witty and pointed exchanges.
In contrast to earlier periods when authors usually were known either as poets or as prose-writers, Ayyubid

13
and Mamluk authors practised a variety of forms and genres. They also introduced new themes and further
developed older ones. Usāma ibn Munqidh (488-584/1095-1188), who is famous today for his memoir of his
experiences during the Crusades, was a leading poet at the court of Saladin. He put together his own Dīwān, which
reflects the vicissitudes of his life, and compiled important anthologies of both poetry and prose.

BOX Poems on earthquakes.
Although there is a long history of earthquakes in Greater Syria, the eleventh and twelfth centuries saw a peak
of seismic activity. Both the earthquakes themselves and their effects on victims and witnesses were subjects for
poets. Unusually, in his Dīwān Usāma also included verses by friends with whom he corresponded. Here is part
of a poem by his friend the Egyptian vizier al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ Ṭalā’i‛ ibn Ruzzīq (d. 556/1161), where he describes
the earthquake which in 552/1157 destroyed Shayzar, Usāma’s family home, together with many members of

In classical Arabic poetry each line is divided into two halves. Here the poet has placed the cesura which
comes halfway through the line in such a way as to break words in two; it seems to be mirroring the destruction
caused by the earthquake.
5. Two elite poets: Ṣafī al-Dīn al-Ḥillī and Ibn Nubāta.
One of the greatest poets of the Mamluk period was Ṣafī al-Dīn al-Ḥillī 677-749/1278-1348). Born in
the Iraqi town of Ḥilla, he moved to the south-eastern Anatolian city of Mardin where he became the court
poet of the Artukid ruler. His most important source of income came from trade, and his travels took him to
the court of Ḥamāh in Syria and the Mamluk court in Cairo, where Sultan al-Nāṣir Muḥammad ibn Qalāwūn
(d. 741/1341) admired his poetry and encouraged him to collect his Dīwān, probably in 723/1322. The Dīwān,
which runs to three volumes, evidently does not contain all Ṣafī al-Dīn’s poetry, but it includes sections on all the
existing genres, some of which, such as the hunting poem (ṭardīya) and wine-poem (khamrīya) had rather gone out
of fashion.
One of Ṣafī al-Dīn’s contributions to Arabic poetry was the badī‛īya. Another was his normative
description, with examples, of four genres of Arabic dialect poetry originating in Andalusia, Egypt and Iraq,
entitled al-Kitāb al-‛āṭil al-ḥālī wa-l-murakhkhaṣ al-ghālī, a convoluted title typical of the age meaning roughly “The
unadorned now bedecked, the cheapened now made costly”. Although Ṣafī al-Dīn was not the first critic to write
on poetry in dialect, with his book this form of poetry acquired a respectability it had not enjoyed before.
14

The badī‛iyya
Ṣafī al-Dīn modeled his foundational badī‛iyya on the Egyptian poet al-Būṣīrī’s (d. 696/1296) praise of
the Prophet Muḥammad known as the Mantle Poem (al-Burda); thus it had the same rhyme, -mi, and metre, basīṭ.
According to Ṣafī al-Dīn himself, he had been working on a poem continuing as many rhetorical figures (badī‛) as
possible when he fell seriously ill. He had a dream of the Prophet and promised that if he recovered, he would
dedicate to him a poem with at least one rhetorical figure in each line. And so the badī‛iyya was born. 6
Ṣafī al-Dīn’s poem has 145 lines and includes 151 rhetorical figures. It starts with a traditional nasīb
recalling separation from a beloved:
If you come to Sal‛, ask after the neighbours by the milestone
and greet the tribesmen at the thorn tree thicket/Dhī Salam.
After an extensive section of chaste love poetry it moves into a short transition speaking of beasts of burden
loaded with rhymes bringing jewel-like words adorned with praise to the best of Arabs and non-Arabs,
Muḥammad, the Chosen One, the Guide, the Prophet,
most glorious of the Messengers, son of the noble ‘Abdallāh.
The Prophet is praised at length for virtues such as noble character, courage, decisiveness and defending the truth.
Then the focus shifts to his Companions and their heroic qualities, before returning to the Prophet, whose prayers
:God answers, and concluding with the poet’s praise of his own poem
If I enjoy good fortune, my praise for you is the cause;
if ill fortune befalls me, my faults have brought down punishment upon me.
Badī‛īyyas combined praise of the Prophet, an expression of authentic religious feeling, with evidence
of poetic skill. Over the centuries they attracted many practitioners, and more than 90 examples are known.7
In showing a poet’s mastery of the Arabic language and literary culture they could support his application for a
position in the civil or judicial administration; in fact they functioned somewhat like a thesis today.

A younger contemporary of Ṣafī al-Dīn and the other great poet of the Mamluk age was Jamāl al-Dīn
Muḥammad ibn Nubāta (686-768/1287-1366). The son of a ḥadīth scholar, he was born in Cairo where he
studied ḥadīth, history, literature, stylistics and language. He moved to Damascus and established contacts with the
civilian élite in the city as well as with the ruler of Ḥamāh, to whom he dedicated many panegyrics. His exchanges
with poets and udabā’ stimulated him to produce a series of works in different poetic genres, some of them already
popular in his time, such as the epigram, others, such as the hunting urjūza (poem in the rajaz metre), resurrected
by him. The following presentation of one of his poems, an elegy, can give only a glimpse of his capacity to work
within the Arabic poetic tradition in creating original poetry.
Like all pre-modern poets in Arabic, Ibn Nubāta saw himself as standing in a tradition on which he drew
imaginatively. An excellent example of this is his elegy on his son ‛Abd al-Raḥīm.

May God be your helper as my tears flow/my tears are my helpers
you who’ve abandoned our home and my hope
It has the same metre (kāmil) and rhyme (-ārī) as a famous poem on a similar loss by Abū l-Ḥasan al-Tihāmī (d.
416/1025), a Yemeni poet who settled in Cairo. Al-Tihāmī’s poem itself represented a development of the preand early Islamic genre of the marthiya, in which the lament for the deceased focused on his bravery in war and
his generosity. Clearly an elegy for a child had to find other qualities, or at least another approach to the subject,
and al-Tihāmī solved this problem by speaking of the qualities his son had not had time to develop.
Ibn Nubāta’s elegy is an expression of his sorrow but at the same time a response, three centuries later,
to al-Tihāmī’s poem. Whereas al-Tihāmī takes refuge in general reflections about the inevitability of death and
mentions his son sparingly, Ibn Nubāta focusses on his grief at having his son snatched away and his regret for
his son’s missed opportunities. The child’s premature death permeates the poem, and the father is distraught:
ار

Would that destruction had summoned me as well, when it did not refrain from you,
so that we could have stayed on the same race course together.
Round the central subject of ‛Abd al-Raḥīm’s death Ibn Nubāta weaves five main themes: tears; journey
(antithesis: abode); earth - the grave; light - the stars (antithesis: darkness); water - garden. He develops them in
turn and thus arrives at a kind of catharsis by the end of the poem, which he announces with the ubi sunt motif:
where are now the kings; where are the well-armed heroes; and (surprisingly) where are the babies?

Where are the babies, lying in their cradles, like blossoms wrapped in their calyces?
Death has suffused their bones and flesh till the pearls they were have become stones.
If I endure, it is because endurance is most fitting; if I show my grief, I have many excuses.
May clouds suckle you copiously, and may moving/serving stars surround you.
They’ll moisten the earth of your grave. But that’s no help to me. I’ll try to cheat my heart and deceive
it.8
Ibn Nubāta’s hearers will have recognized that he was responding to al-Tihāmī’s elegy with a remarkable
mastery of rhetoric and command of language. They may have been surprised, however, by the virtual absence
of references to ṣabr (steadfast endurance) as an Islamic virtue. In this poem Ibn Nubāta shows himself trying to
tame his grief with stoicism, not religion.

Small is beautiful: the micro-qaṣīda
Already in pre-Islamic times the qaṣīda was a long poem, running to up to a hundred verses; poets needed
16
ARAL IK- D EC EM B ER 2022
space to develop the different themes which constituted it. This did not change at the Umayyad and ‘Abbasid
courts where poets delivered their panegyrics; indeed they were sometimes rewarded per verse, which could be an
incentive to draw out the poem as much as possible. However, Ibn al-Rūmī, who composed poems of over 200
verses, remains an exception.
In the changed social context of the Mamluk period mentioned above, when most secular poetry
was composed in the milieu of ‘ulamā’ and men of letters for their colleagues and equals, the traditional
subjects of panegyric, prowess in war and generosity, lost ground. And communication ceased to be a one-way
street. Themes more appropriate to the new milieu, such as congratulations, a sub-theme of madīḥ, gained in
importance, as did forms such as the epigram mentioned earlier. The appearance of a dramatically abbreviated
qaṣīda, seven lines long, is part of this phenomenon.
On first sight these micro-qaṣīdas could be mistaken for muqaṭṭa‛āt, poems of up to a dozen lines on any
subject. But whereas the muqaṭṭa‛a is mono-thematic, these 7-line poems are concentrations of traditional qaṣīdas,
that is, they begin with a nasīb or ghazal and modulate through a transitional passage (takhalluṣ) to a section of
praise (madīḥ). Here is an example by Ibn Abī Ḥajala (725-776/1325-1375), together with Ibn Nubāta and alQīrāṭī (726-781/1326-1379) one of the main practitioners of the micro-qaṣīda; he is addressing a man of letters

The traditional divisions of the qaṣīda can be seen: ghazal or nasīb ll. 1-3; transition (riḥla/takhalluṣ) l. 4 and madīḥ ll.
5-7. Because the addressee is a man of letters, an adīb, the allusions are literary, to the authors Ṣarī‛ al-ghawānī,
the nickname of the early Abbasid poet Muslim ibn al-Walīd, and Badī‛ al-Zamān al-Hamadhānī, and the terms
“concepts” and “poetry”. References to movement, up, down and undefined, run through the poem. And it
should be read as an answer to another micro-qaṣīda by Ibn Nubāta.9
The micro-qaṣīda was popular with poets in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries but seems not to have
survived the Ottoman conquest.

6. An artisan poet: Ibrāhīm al-Mi‛mār
As literacy increased under the Mamluks, poets from humbler professions emerged. One such was the Egyptian
master-builder Ibrāhīm al-Mi‛mār (d. 749/1348). Little is known about him except that he lived in a popular
quarter of Cairo, he had some formal education and acquaintance with the literary heritage, and he was in
contact with scholars and udabā’ . He is the author of nearly 500 epigrams, one qaṣīda, thirty-two mawāliyyas,
one muwashshaḥ, twelve zajals and a maqāma.10 While he was criticised for faults of language in formal Arabic, his
poems in both formal and dialect Arabic were widely appreciated, as can be seen from the many manuscripts of
his dīwān.
Ibrāhīm al-Mi‛mār does not use poetry to rise socially. Although his persona as a poet is not identical
with the historical Ibrāhīm, he speaks as a craftsman, with an audience of craftsmen and humble employees of
religious institutions in mind. In this epigram, with a typical play on words (tawriyya), he defends himself from
faults of language:

They say: “This fellow has no ‘arabiyya (Arabic language), we don’t see him frequenting the
grammarians”.
I tell them: “How should I get a cart (‘arabiyya), when I haven’t even got the price of a donkey?”11
The main subjects of Ibrāhīm’s Dīwān are love, sex, debauchery, satire, wine and drugs. Many of his
poems belong to the category of mujūn, an elastic concept which depending on the context may mean anything
from frivolity to obscenity. For instance, one of his zajals recounts a journey he and a friend made to find wine
during a period of prohibition. After an introductory line:
ّ
They have forbidden us the juice of the grape, Yāsīn.
God grant they don’t forbid us fig wine/the anus
the poem depicts the devastating effect prohibition has had on convivial drinking parties, with the candles
weeping, the musical instruments sighing, the wine turning bitter and the boon companions scattered (strophes
1-4). A friend of the poet suggests to him that they should try to find some wine or even a substitute made from
raisins, and they comb the surroundings of Cairo, finally reaching a monastery (strophes 5-8). They call the
abbot and talk him into providing some wine, and after a long wait an aged monk appears with the only jar he
could find. He fears it is only dregs and so it turns out to be, thoroughly disgusting (strophes 9-14). In despair the
poet and his friend think of visiting shrines. They stop by a brewer, but his miserable beer merely strengthens the
18
ARAL IK- D EC EM B ER 2022
poet’s resolve to find good wine (strophes 15-17). Old wine, in his mind, goes together with a willing young boy
(strophes 18-19), but he thinks it wiser to repent, marking the date with a chronogram, 745 (=1344) (strophes
20-21). Here is a provocative pre-repentance exclamation (strophe 18):
All I want is old wine, and a little new lover to keep me company
I’ll spend my wealth on him till I’m called a have-not, though I’ll be high, as high as can be.12
An artisan such as Ibrāḥīm ran no danger in treating religious subjects frivolously, since he had
no political enemies to use his verses against him. On the contrary, his wit and poetic skill were widely
appreciated.
7. The Ottoman period
There is no clear break in poetry between the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. As is clear from
the above discussion of the Mamluk period, the court had ceased to be the main centre of poetic activity.
Consequently, the Ottoman conquest of 922-3/1516-17, transferring the court outside the Arab lands, had
only a limited effect on literature. Ambitious young men travelled to Istanbul with poems in their luggage to
attract attention and advance a career in the religious hierarchy or the administration, but intellectual life did
not disappear in Egypt and Syria. Indeed, in the first decades after the conquest, judges from Istanbul came
to Damascus to attend scholarly gatherings (majālis) and familiarize themselves with contemporary intellectual
trends among their Arabic-speaking counterparts.
One major poet of the seventeenth century who made the trip to Istanbul, but rather late in life,
was the Damascene Manjak Pāshā ibn Muḥammad al-Yūsufī (1007-1080/1598-1669), ninth-generation
descendant of a Mamluk emir of Circassian origin. He divided his time between learning and convivial
gatherings and then, having run through the family fortune with his extravagant expenditure and lavish gifts,
he travelled to Istanbul. He had been led to believe that the Sultan would provide him with a position, but
he was disappointed and after two years he returned to Damascus and lived as a recluse. He composed in all
the major genres; love and wine poetry, panegyrics for contemporary scholars and officials and praise of his
own family make up a large part of his dīwān. He also engaged in poetic dialogues with friends. He knew
Turkish and Persian, and at least one Turkish poem of his has survived. In his Istanbul poems, his rūmiyyāt, he
consciously parallels Abū Firās al-Hamdānī’s compositions, also known as rūmiyyāt, made during this prince’s
imprisonment in Constantinople centuries earlier (see chapter ?); they both suffer from being strangers in a
strange land far from their loved ones. Manjak combined a creative use of themes and original imagery with
a smooth and eloquent style free from rhetorical artifice, and he was greatly admired by his contemporaries.
Here he is looking back on his life, pictured as a ship adrift in a storm:

8. Widening the horizons
Istanbul was not the only destination outside the Arab lands which attracted dignitaries and men of
letters. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the Safavid Shāh Ismā‛īl established a unified Iranian state
with its capital in Tabriz and imposed Twelver Shi‛ism on the country, which had been Sunni till then. For this
he needed religious officials and administrators with a Shi‛i education, and he turned to Iraq and especially
Jabal ‛Āmil in what is now Lebanon, which both had a tradition of Shi‛i learning, to provide them. One scholar
and writer who made his career in various cities in Iran was Bahā’ al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn al-‛Āmilī
(953-1030/1547-1621), author of books on law, theology, medicine and mathematics and compiler of a famous
anthology of prose and poetry in Arabic and Persian, the Kashkūl (dervish’s begging bowl). Among the poetry
which he included in it was his 101-line urjūza on the city of Herat, where he had lived when his father was
shaikh al-islām there.14 He composed it as a way to pass the time when he was in Qazvin, house-bound with an
eye infection. Interestingly, this poem is structured like a prose treatise, beginning with praise of the God and the
Prophet, a general sketch of the city and a “table of contents” of some of its specific charms:
It knows no parallel in water or in air
Likewise its gardens and madrasas -

nor in its fruits and women
there’s nothing to compare with them.
This is followed by sections on these themes more or less in order; “women” and “fruits” are reversed,
because the poet describes grapes and melons as well as fruits in general.
The poem concludes with a nostalgic recollection of the carefree days spent in Herat:
ْ ض
Oh for the days we spent while we were in Herat,
Stealing pleasure and joys, tireless in jesting and jokes,
We lived there a life of ease, with fate helping us to our desires.
A light-hearted mood is dominant. Bahā’ al-Dīn’s Herat is not a political centre, the students and teachers
20
ARAL IK- D EC EM B ER 2022
frequenting the Mirzā madrasa are not mentioned, nor is the shrine which the city houses of the Sufi master
Khwāja ‛Abdallāh Anṣārī. With its gardens, waterways and beautiful women, it is a city in which to eat, drink and
be merry.
The choice of the urzūja metre and the treatise structure for this rather frivolous poem are not innocent.
Urzūjas in this period were very often didactic, textbooks in an easily memorized form; a famous example is the
Alfiyya of Ibn Mālik (d. 672/1274) presenting Arabic grammar. Seen in this light, Bahā’ al-Dīn’s poem on Herat is
clearly subversive.
9. Zajals on historical subjects
The narrative possibilities of the zajal have already been illustrated in Ibrāhīm al-Mi‛mār’s witty account
of his search for wine. From the end of the Mamluk period and the Ottoman period zajals have survived which
treat serious historical subjects. A well-known example is the Madīḥa ‛alā Jabal Lubnān (Praise of Mount Lebanon) by
the Maronite Franciscan Jibrā’īl (Gabriel) ibn al-Qilā‛ī (d. c. 922/1517), running to 295 quatrains. It is an account
of the history of Mount Lebanon in which myth is intertwined with an ideological message: Mount Lebanon has
always defended its Maronite faith and loyalty to Rome against the attacks of heretics (Syrian Orthodox) and
Muslims. The main part is epic in tone, but at the end the poet warns the inhabitants of Mount Lebanon of divine
retribution if they do not drive out the Syrian Orthodox and the foreigners.
In zajals, there is a recurrent rhyming syllable which appears at the end of each quatrain: aaab, cccb, dddb
and so on. In Ibn al-Qilā‛ī’s Madīḥa the rhyming syllable is -ān, and the word occurring most often in the recurrent
rhyme (40 times) is īmān (belief), far ahead of ṭughyān (heresy; 15 times) or Lubnān (16 times). Insān (human being)
occurs 21 times, almost always as padding to round off a line. Ibn al-Qilā‛ī’s poetic gifts did not equal his missionary
zeal.
Another zajal by an anonymous author is an eyewitness account of the siege of Aleppo in 1065-66/1655.
In 138 quatrains the poet describes the Aleppines’ attempts to get the appointment of a new governor known for
his brutality, Aḥmad Pāshā, rescinded; their failed resistance and withdrawal into the city; Aḥmad Pāshā’s troops’
occupation and plundering of the suburbs; the collapse of business and end of
Aleppo as a centre of the caravan trade; Aḥmad Pāshā’s efforts to scale the city walls; the imposition of exorbitant
taxes; and finally the cancellation of Aḥmad Pāshā’s appointment and his troops’ withdrawal.
In conclusion the poet repeats his lament for Aleppo’s sufferings and prays for God’s mercy and the Virgin
Mary’s intercession. This last touch is a rare indication that the author is a Christian. The poem speaks of a disaster
which befell all Aleppines, Muslims and Christians, alike, and the account is sometimes interrupted by a direct
address to the audience, “Yā akhī” (brother) or “Yā ikhwānī” (brothers). The poet’s perspective is that of a craftsman
with an eye for details. The looting of workshops and shops of tradesmen is the first disaster he mentions, followed
by the stealing of valuables and even the washing still wet in the tub. When the orchards and gardens are destroyed,
he thinks of the effort which went into planting and tending them. The craftsmen and merchants are idle and have
no money to satisfy the brutal tax-collectors. The mosques are being used as stables and the churches are out of

The constant rhyme is -ab, chosen for the word Ḥalab (Aleppo), which occurs 37 times, especially at the
beginning of the poem. Other rhyme words are ra‛ab (fear), ‛aṭab (ruin), nadab (lament) but also ṭarab (joy, delight); this
last is used when the poet recalls pleasant gatherings in the now devasted gardens but also when the water supply

is reestablished, a cause for general rejoicing. This anonymous poet has succeeded not only in recounting a tragic
event in Aleppo’s history but also in conveying the emotions of the citizens who lived through it.
10. Christian poetry in 18th century Greater Syria.
During the 17th century the Christian communities in Greater Syria became more prosperous. Their
contacts with fellow believers outside the Ottoman Empire (in Western Europe, the Romanian principalities and
Russia) increased, as did their level of education; Roman Catholic missionaries played an important though not
exclusive part in this. Many of these Christians came to be employed as secretaries (kuttāb) to local rulers; they
were educated men who took part in the exchanges between udabā’. While earlier Christian poets had composed
in popular metres (Ibn al-Qilā‛ī’s Madīḥa even uses a metre derived from Syriac verse), in the 18th century they
also used the metres of elite poetry. The most outstanding Christian poet in this period was the Greek Catholic
Niqūlāwus al-Ṣā’igh (1103-1169/1692-1756).
___________________________________________________________________________
BOX Niqūlāwus al-Ṣā’igh
Born and educated in Aleppo, as a young man Niqūlāwus joined the newly founded Shuwayrite Order in Mount
Lebanon, and for many years he was its superior. His dīwān, of which very many manuscripts are extant, contains
examples of the main genres adapted to his particular circumstances. As the head of an Order he had many
dealing with local rulers and notables, Christians, Druze and Muslims, and he composed panegyrics of them to
defend the interests of his monasteries, often threatened by other Christians. His elegies allude to specific Christian
beliefs about life after death. His religious ghazal expresses devotion to the Virgin Mary. Two long poems, one on
the birth of Christ and the other on his Passion, Burial and Resurrection, show him working with traditional Arabic
motifs but also with references to Biblical texts and Byzantine hymnography; Catholic imagery and the occasional
Qur’anic term also occur in them.15 His dīwān also contains lighter fare, descriptions of natural beauty, exchanges
with friends, jokes and riddles.
Niqūlāwus’ most original contribution to Arabic poetry is his badī‛iyya, in which he has taken the genre
developed by Ṣafī al-Dīn al-Ḥillī and given it a Christian content. The themes include repentance and turning
to Christ; praise of the Son and the Father; praise of the Apostles and saints; affirmation of the primacy of
Peter among the Apostles; reference to the Old Testament’s foretelling of Christ’s coming; further praise of the
Apostles and affirmation of the poet’s trust in their intercession. As in other badī‛iyyas, each line exhibits at least
one rhetorical figure.
By appropriating the badīʿiyya form, Niqūlāwus al-Ṣāʾigh was affirming that some Christians felt they could
compete with their Muslim fellow Arabic-speakers in the cultural domain most closely associated with Islam, the
Arabic language, and in a genre that conveyed profound religious feeling. This was a sign of a new, or renewed,
cultural self-confidence.16
11. Poems for Warlords
In the 18th century a number of autonomous local rulers emerged in regions remote from the central
Ottoman government. One such was the Sunnī Ẓāhir al-‛Umar al-Zaydānī (d.1189 /1775), who established
his rule in Galilee and as far as Acre. He had a tumultuous relationship with his neighbour the Shī‛ī Nāṣīf
al-Naṣṣār (d.1195/1781), the ruler of the Jabal ‛Āmil to the north of his domains. At times they cooperated

against common enemies such as the Sunni emir Milhem al-Shihābī, at times they intervened in each other’s
internal family feuds, at times they fought each other. Like other local potentates, each had his own poet, who
exchanged verses with his counterparts in a manner reminiscent of Umayyad or even pre-Islamic times, but
applying the traditional themes and motifs to on-going events. Thus ‛Abd al-Ḥalīm al-Shuwaykī, Ẓāhir al‛Umar’s spokesman, begins a poem of praise and reproach with a ghazal complaint that people have slandered
him to his beloved. After a quick transition he describes first his patron’s valiant army and then his patron
himself, before reminding the ‛Āmilīs that they turned to Ẓāhir al-‛Umar for help against another emir but have

Ibrāhīm al-Ḥārīṣī, Nāṣīf ’s poet, takes up the challenge. At the beginning of his reply he affirms that he
is eternally faithful to his beloved, even though her hair is turning grey. The madīḥ mentions Nāṣīf immediately,

The passage of time wears out friendship, but our rights remain,

O dissension! Reason cannot accept that it should happen,
Yet it has cast its burden on the back of right guidance.
It brings about the loss of true religion and worldly might.
None but Abū Sa‛īd [i.e. Nāṣīf] can set a term to it.
In metre and rhyme these verses recall much older poems. The metre, kāmil, in combination with
the pronominal suffix to the rhyme – ālahā , is a perhaps faint echo of the Mu‛allaqa of Labīd in kāmil with
its rhyme and suffix -āmuhā. The vocabulary of warfare has not changed. These poets, however, have an
awareness of rhetorical conceits, badī‛, such as paronomasia and antithesis, which their forebears lacked. But
what makes the poems memorable is that they have the vividness and force of lived experience; they are not
.mechanically reproducing time-honoured images and motifs
12. Scenes of Egyptian city life
Far from any battlefield, poets in Cairo expressed themselves about the pleasures and cares of
everyday life. The Shaikh of al-Azhar ‛Abdallāh al-Shubrawi (1091-1171/1681-1758) proclaims his longing
for his native land and its beauties in verses composed while he was on the pilgrimage, and elsewhere he

Less highly placed, his contemporary ‛Abdallāh ibn ‛Abdallah al-Idkāwī (1104–84/1692–1770)
needed to seek material support from governors and notables, and at times he turned to friends to act
as intermediaries. In one poem he asks the eminent philologist and lexicographer Murtaḍā al-Zabīdī (d.
1205/1791) to intervene with the emir Ṣāliḥ, listing all the things he hears about and doesn’t possess: money,
wheat, rice, beans, butter. He has to bear his wife’s reproaches as well. He concludes the poem with a request
to the eminent emir to put some oil in his mulukhia; he cannot even afford oil for a lamp.
Another shaikh, Ḥasan al-Badrī al-Ḥijāzī (d. 1131/1718) was something of a recluse but an excellent
poet, renowned for his satires on Egyptian rulers and Egyptians in general. His poetry is often cited in alJabartī’s (d. 1241/1825) history of Egypt ‘Ajā’ib al-āthār fī l-tarājim wa-l-akhbār (The wondrous vestiges of
events and biographies); al-Jabartī’s father admired him and transmitted his verses. Here he welcomes the
appointment of a new Ottoman governor, Khalīl Pāshā:

Our Egypt has been afflicted by a disaster for God’s people,
I’ve said, to record the date: Khalīl Pasha is a weakling.
It’s an ugly catastrophe, no worse can ever exist,
That is, in feebleness, extinction and utmost detestation.
Hasan al-Badrī begs his Lord to suppress the ambitious one.
God heard Hasan’s plea, for Khalīl Pāshā was soon killed by the Egyptian emirs. Apart from the
poet’s frank hostility to the new governor, this poem provides an example of a popular feature of Ottoman
Arabic poetry, the chronogram.

13. The uses of artifice.
For long the traditional account of poetry in the Ottoman period focussed on devices such as
chronograms and artifices such as verses using only dotted letters or alternatively verses using only undotted
letters. Unashamedly artificial poems exist, but they form only a small part of a rich poetic landscape which
is now beginning to be discovered. And although they usually served simply to exhibit their authors’ linguistic
and poetic capacities, at times they had a more serious purpose, as the following example shows.
When Buṭrus Karāma (1188-1268/1774-1851), the secretary of Bashīr II, composed a poem with an
entire word as a rhyme throughout, several poets responded in conventional fashion. But one attacked him,
accusing him of not being able to produce good poetry because he was a Christian. Among the rebuttals
of this accusation was one composed by a man of letters in Baghdad, ‘Abd al-Ḥamīd ibn al-Ṣabbāgh alAṭraqjī (d. 1271/1854). It is a poem of nine lines, which presents itself as a precious gift likened to a maiden
with languorous eyes and a loving heart, wishing Buṭrus protection from the blows of fate and long life. On
the level of meaning it is somewhat artificial and contorted, but its point lies elsewhere. As ‘Abd al-Ḥamīd
explains in an accompanying letter, the first letters of the nine lines are an acrostic of Buṭrus’s name and
the second letters are an acrostic of his own (both Buṭrus Karāma and ‛Abd al-Ḥamīd have nine letters
in Arabic). In the second half-line of each verse, the first letter is an acrostic of the name of the former
governor of Baghdad (mentioned at the beginning of this chapter), Dāwud Pasha, who was instrumental
in circulating Buṭrus’s poetry. His name only has eight letters, however. In addition, each second half-line
contains a chronogram of the Christian year 1844 except for the final half-line, which has the chronogram of
the equivalent Muslim date, 1260. By intertwining his own name with those of Buṭrus and Dāwud Pasha and
integrating Christian and Muslim dates in the chronograms, ‛Abd al-Ḥamīd conveys a clear message to those
who would like to exclude Christians from the community of writers and poets in Arabic.
To conclude

This chapter has not offered a systematic account of Arabic poetry in the Mamluk and Ottoman periods.
It is too soon for that to be possible. Nor has religious poetry, an important part of poetic production, been
discussed here; it is the subject of another chapter. What has been attempted is to give an idea of the variety
of themes, genres, forms and techniques used by poets in this period. And the field lies wide open for more
discoveries.
The chronogram
Chronograms exploits the numerical value of the Arabic letters in order to create a phrase whose letters
add up to a given date. Conventionally the chronogram is introduced by a signal, ta’rīkh (date) or a word derived
from the verb arrakha (to date). The above poem is somewhat unusual as far as the chronogram is concerned, for
most poems which contain them are two- or three-line epigrams, with the chronogram occurring in the last line.
Here the signal for the chronogram (in line two) is “ta’rīkhihā”. The subsequent words, where only the consonants
are counted, add up to 1123 (kh = 600; l = 30; y = 10; l = 30; b = 2; ā = 1; sh = 300; ā = 1; f = 80; y = 10; h =
5; m = 40; y = 10; d = 4), and indeed Khalīl Pāshā was in office and met his death in that year.
Chronograms were particularly suitable for inscriptions on buildings and tombstones, but they were
also exchanged among friends with congratulations for a marriage, the birth of a child, a new appointment or
suchlike. To compose a successful chronogram was not easy, for it had to add up to the correct figure, make sense
and fit easily into a larger context. Christian poets, for instance secretaries at the court of Bashīr II in Mount
Lebanon, composed chronograms with Christian as well as Muslim dates, depending on who the addressee was.

Abdal Musa Tekkesi Yazıtları
Mustafa Cansız1*
“gengüdümsel konum”a (stratejik mevki) tekkesini kurmuş. Çevre, bolluk bereket ve ekonomik olanaklar
sunuyor.
Abdal Musa, yaşamı söylencelerle örülü, Hacı Bektaş müridi, Anadolu Bektaşilerinin “pîr-i sânî”si
(ikinci büyüğü), savaşçı bir gazi derviştir. “Kerâmet” gösterir, mal mülk, varlık bağışlar. Nerede doğduğu,
nereli olduğu tartışmalıdır. Kendisi bir şiirinde “Biz Horasan mülkindeki babdanuz” aynı şiirin başka bir
dizesinde de “Neslimiz sorarsan asıl Hoy’danuz2” diyor, 17. YY.
etmeliyiz.

A. Kahraman-R.Dankof, s.140, 2005, İstanbul].
Köylülerin verdiği bilgiye göre kuyu on altı

2. “Yol”a candan bağlanma.
Rızâ: 1. Hoşnutluk, razı olma. 2. Tanrıdan gelen her şeyi gönül rahatlığı ile kabullenme.
Tekke-i sıdk-ı rızâ: Memnunluk, mutluluk, kabullenme ve doğruluk tekkesi.
1. Özellik, biçim, varlık. 2. Kişinin ve nesnenin durumları.
Müyesser: Kolaylık, kolay, kolay gelen.
Dehen: Ağız.
Kand: Şeker.
Kand-ı nebât: 1. Bitkisel şeker, şeker kamışından elde edilen şeker, nebat şekeri, nöbet şekeri5. 2.

Bu dizenin okunuşu, gördüğümüz bütün kaynaklarda; Süleyman Fikri Erten’in Antalya Müzesi’nde bulunan Abdal Musa adlı basılmamış eserindeki [Seyirci, 1992, İstanbul, 37] okumasını temel aldıklarından olacak, yanlış verile gelmiş. Abdurrahman Güzel de kitabına “Hak sana etmiş müyesser-dîh
nîl-i kand-i nebât” diye aktarak yanlışı yinelemiş [Güzel, s. 36, Ankara, 1999].
5

kuyudan çıkarak Abdal Musa Tekkesi’nde hayat buluyor.
tarihimiz diyor. Kuyunun altı yönü olduğunu söylemiştik. Son dizede, çıkan sayıya altı ekle demeye
getiriyor. Son dize ebcet hesabıyla 1228’i veriyor. Altı ekleyip yazıtın tarihi olan 1234’ü buluyoruz.
Şeş cihât: Altı yön, cihât, “cihet”in çoğulu.
Mesrûr: Şiiri yazan, tekkenin o günkü müritlerinden bir ozan.
Çâh: Kuyu. Mitolojide öbür dünyaya, yer altı dünyasına geçişi temsil eder. Tasavvufta Hz. Ali’nin
Tanrısal gizi bir kuyuya sakladığı aktarılır. Söylenene göre Hz. Muhammed’e peygamberlik gelince,
Tanrı, ona doksan bin sözcük ve bazı gizler söylemiş. Peygamber bunların “otuz binini halka ayan, otuz
binini seçkinlere beyân, otuz binini de nihân (saklı) tutmuş.” Her şeyi herkesin bilmesi gerekmezmiş.

Sırrın saklanmasının zorluğu ve “ney”in gizli sırları anlatması Firikya Kıralı Midas’ın (M. Ö.

Son dize ebcet hesabıyla tekkenin yeniden açılış tarihi olan 1291’i veriyor.

Abstruct Through a series of comparisons applied to the materiality, context, content and writing of a
tombstone dated AH 435 / AD 1044 (currently on display at the Berlin-Museum für Islamische Kunst)
with the Kairouan epigraphic collection, this study has led to two new conclusions: one rectifying
its geographical origin and the other highlighting an unfamiliar funerary practice. The stele does not
belong to Spain or to the city of Almería, but rather to Ifriqiya and more precisely to the workshop
of Atiq b. Hassan in Kairouan. It is also the second epitaph from the tomb of Jâbir b. Muhammad
al-Khashab, known as Ibn al-Qallâl, who was buried in the cemetery known as al-Janâh al-Akhdhar
opposite the western gate known as Bâb Salam in the same city.
Key words : tombstone - AH 435 / AD 1044 - Jâbir b. Muhammad al-Khashshâb - Ibn al-Qallâl Kairouan - workshop of Atiq b. Hassan - double epitaphs.
Introduction

Malheureusement, aucune photographie n’a

Or,
localisée in situ à Kairouan en 1958 ?

Conclusion

sur cette époque٤٢.

maximale (Tableau 10):
