2023, Магията или вярата в свръхестественото. Годишник на Регионален етнографски музей - Пловдив
The use of rituals for breaking curses and the practice of counter-magic, either self-employed or by means of a specialist, is a still very alive in the Bulgarian society. These kind of rituals are implied in different cases as when someone is plagued by family disputes and bickering, when the marriage is crumbling, by strange or too often sicknesses etc. Some of the practiced methods for breaking magic are very archaic and show parallels to rituals practiced in ancient times. Along with these folklore relicts nowadays are used also modern or/and modernized rituals for the same purposes. Despite the specific form of the applied ritual practices they all are representing the persistent belief in the power of supernatural evil.

Magical Practices in Russia Today: An Observer's Report2013 •
The article is a record of a story of a visit to a witch-doctor in Modern Russia. The séance included the invocation of spirits of dead and alive persons, and also of Jesus Christ. Hypnosis and medium were used. It is to be noted that both witch-doctor and its client belong in this case to rather prosperous and educated Moscow dwellers. Some parallels from East-Slavic manuscript and folklore traditions and also from Russian classical literature are discussed.

English version of the "State, Religion and Church" article. This article examines definitions of magic in the context of the humanities and shows how many working definitions are inaccurate. It proposes that we view magic as an umbrella term, the use of which depends on cultural context, and that the best way to approach the study of magic in the present is to determine its borders anew with regard to each particular culture, carefully examining whether a particular phenomenon belongs to the occult in that specific context. It then aims to provide a guide for historians and scholars of religion on handling primary sources on magic, both print and oral, illustrating the usefulness of the methodology described above by applying it to the study of magic in the post-Soviet space. In the process, the transition of the post-Soviet magician from a person of knowledge to a person of power, the redefinition of previously negative terms (witch [ved’ma] and inhuman [neliud’] or un-human [ankhuman]) into positive ones, and the use of terms borrowed from Western occulture are examined. Keywords: folk magic, witchcraft, ceremonial magic, anthropology, translations of magical texts, otherkin, folk Christianity, Carlos Castaneda. With special thanks to my editor, Chris Stroop, whose contribution was invaluable. Originally published in "State, Religion and Church" 1(2), 2014, p. 29-60.

Človek a spoločnosť
Contemporary signs of magic in the everyday life of Roma minority in the selected areas of Brno, focusing on magical acts like “pokerování” and evil eyeThe origin and existence of shamanism in Southern Europe is insufficiently explored. At the same time, there is no doubt about presence of shamanistic elements in the European folk religion. Also, insufficient attention is paid to the sur- vival and persistence of archaic elements of myth-ritual complex found in folk religion. To shed light on the above men- tioned issues, the phenomenon of Bulgarian nestinarstvo is examined in this paper. It does contain distinctive shamanic features. Main features of South-European shamanism are its agrarian nature and professional differentiation of religious specialists (knowledge about the dead, or agrarian fertility). Bulgarian beliefs connected with nestinarstvo show a relation- ship to one of the basic myths of the Indo-European mythology: the struggle of the heavenly, thundering storm-god against the underworldly, water-retaining chaos-dragon. Keywords: South Europe, European shamanism, adaptation, ecology of religion, nestinarstvo, firewalking, St. Kon- stantin, folk religion, pre-Christian beliefs.
