17th-century Venetian Opera

Rappresentata per la prima volta a Venezia durante la stagione di car-nevale del 1643, L'incoronazione di Poppea è l'ultima opera attribuibile, del tutto o in parte, a Claudio Monteverdi. Oltre a essere una delle poche opere, forse l'unica, del primo Seicento a essere entrata stabil-mente nel repertorio contemporaneo, è sicuramente uno dei drammi musicali più complessi e ambigui del suo genere. Questo libro offre un'introduzione ai temi e ai personaggi dell' opera, insieme a una guida all'ascolto, entrambe rivolte ad un pubblico inclusivo, sia universitario che non specialistico.

A discussion  of the essays on the economic structures of the early Venetian  opera  which  Lorenzo Bianconi, Giovanni Morelli and Thomas Walker published  between 1976 and 1984,    with reference to Hellmuth Christian Wollff’s  seminal book  on this subject matter as well as to  Max Weber's theory  of capitalism and Fernand Braudel’s  writings on Venetian economy in the 17th century.

Thanks to recent studies on the nature and history of passions in the early modern era, we are now able to understand better how the Baroque world understood the temporal development of emotional experience. In musicology this new understanding may also help to provide historical explanations for both the morphological and the chronometric developments of the Baroque aria up to around 1700. Through these new perspectives, the aria – the moment in Italian music in which the singing persona stages his/her emotional or reflective state – would come to represent not only the result of compositional choices, but also a conception of temporal events symbolically consistent with contemporary anthropological codes. Late seventeenth-century redefinitions of the internal articulation of arias, and therefore of their temporality, led to the movement from the short strophic pattern to the long da capo form. This process could be considered the result of a progressive cultural change stemming from Descartes’ treatise on Les passions de l’âme (1649) regarding the coeval understanding of mental and communicative activities.
Conversely, the article aims to investigate the expressive functions fulfilled by the aria before these changes intervened in the mid-seventeenth century. To this end, it analyses a selection of arias from Giacinto Andrea Cicognini and Francesco Cavalli’s Giasone (1649), an opera which, on account of its widespread and long-lasting success, may be taken as a paradigm of taste and cultural convention. Its musical structures must have been perceived as symbolically consistent with contemporary cultural tenets on the structure of emotions and feelings. At the end of the previous century, commentators on Aristotle’s De anima already seemed to be aware that mental activities operate over time and relate to it. Through the analysis of these arias from Giasone the article examines the compositional techniques that, by contributing to the shaping of the musical structure, express the temporal development of the emotional affection experienced and communicated by the characters.

Seventeenth-century Venetian operatic divas pioneered a new social identity for women both onstage, as virtuosic opera singers, and as independent professionals in the Venetian cityscape. They accomplished this partly in prototypical commercial opera houses. From such spaces the sound of their voices, and the memory of their performances in cross-dressed and warrior woman roles spilled out on the cutting edge of performance to spread the novel form across early modern Europe. The performance of cross-dressed and warrior woman roles transgressed normative gender codes and is one way early modern divas overcame misogynist perceptions. In fact, by occupying “the norm in myriad ways,” these women exceeded and reworked accepted norms performatively while modelling independent agency and pioneering a new profession for women (Judith Butler, Undoing 217).
For my project, I trace the reception of the early modern diva’s “sonic performances of gender” (Andrew Dell’Antonio) and the movement of her resonant body from opera stage to city-street. To do this, I apply J. L. Austin’s analytic lens of performativity as employed in gender studies and performance studies scholarship to analyze the social impact of the early modern operatic diva’s performance of self. My interdisciplinary methodology interlaces material historical data, close textual and musical readings, with performance theory. Specifically, I examine the music and texts of five performance scores to understand how composer Francesco Cavalli (1602 - 1676) and his librettist collaborators tailored warrior woman roles to fit the voices of lead singers like Anna Renzi (c.1620 - c.1661). To provide the socio-material context outside of score and text, I focus on Renzi’s career and the reception of her performances in La finta pazza (1641) and La Deidamia (1645) along with perceptions of her in everyday life. With theoretical approaches centered on performativity, gender, reception, and celebrity status, I work to wrest out remnant traces of ephemeral “presence and its reception through embodied understanding” of performance embedded in scores, letters, and performance accounts (Diane Taylor, The Archive 292).

Para atender à constante demanda por novas obras de forma eficiente, temporada após temporada, e explorar situações que já haviam sido bem sucedidas, mas fazê-las parecer novas, libretistas e compositores vieram cada vez mais a contar com uma ampla gama de convenções adaptadas, em sua maior parte, da comédia falada. As convenções envolviam estruturas de enredo, tipos de caracteres, e, das formas mais significativas para o futuro do melodrama. De fato, como veremos, muitas das convenções dramáticas ainda são reconhecíveis em óperas que desfrutamos hoje. A necessidade de criar frequentemente novos espetáculos, sem perder a aprovação do público, favoreceu o surgimento de uma série de convenções nos teatros venezianos do século XVII. Compositores e libretistas poderiam confiar em algumas fórmulas-padrão, que já haviam recebido o consentimento do público; a audiência foi atraída pela possibilidade de encontrar situações e dispositivos dramatúrgicos, a que ele era habituado, inseridos nas novas tramas-ou, pelo contrário, "para ver histórias substancialmente bem conhecidas no palco com novas particularidades". Algumas das convenções estruturais mais gerais permaneceram relativamente constantes ao longo do século, enquanto outras, mais especificamente músico-dramáticas, mudaram em resposta ao gênero em desenvolvimento. Em maior escala, o formato em três atos, após um período inicial, tornou-se padrão para as tramas das óperas. As histórias passaram de uma ênfase na mitologia ao romance e história cada vez mais ficcional, uma estrutura convencional com base na fórmula que surgiu na década de 1640: "dois pares de amantes rodeados por uma variedade de personagens secundários e comediantes", estes pertencentes às classes mais baixas. Outras convenções serviram para articular a estrutura maior da ópera, o movimento instrumental que a iniciava, ou o prólogo apresentado por personagens mitológicos ou alegóricos. Os atos, individualmente, poderiam variar em tamanho e número de cenas, com "primeiros atos" geralmente mais longos e "terceiros atos" mais curtos. Pietro Ziani tornou-se organista no convento de S. Salvatore e aceito como tenor na famosa Capela de São Marcos, em Veneza. Mesmo envolvido no clero veneziano, e solteiro, poderia ter vivido confortavelmente com seu salário, mas o trabalho de freelancer desempenhou um papel importante para apoiar sua família de origem, e assim, tornou-se compositor de ópera. Ele escreveu 16 partituras de ópera só para a cidade lagunar que já tinha a tradição de ópera pública desde 1637. O entretenimento era tão profícuo, que os cidadãos podiam escolher entre as várias apresentações à noite, durante a estação prolongada de carnaval. Em 1654, Ziani compôs seu primeiro dramma per musica, La guerriera spartana e este foi apresentado no Teatro Sant'Apollinare. O teatro teve sua receita baixa desde a sua inauguração, em 1651, e o compositor Francesco Cavalli, que havia composto várias óperas, se recusava a escrever novamente para o Teatro. Assim, o empresário Marco Faustini contratou Ziani para compor L'Eupatra. Apesar de um libreto escrito há mais de três anos, por Giovanni Faustini, os números mostram que mais de 4.000 pessoas assistiram às apresentações, tornando a ópera um sucesso. Veneza se "autoglorificava uma cidade de esplendor e prazer", analogamente a uma independência [relativa] da Roma Papal, certamente Ziani pôde refletir em suas óperas a moral generosa de sua principal atração, as cortesãs. A cortesã como o epítome do prazer está na mais bem sucedida ópera de Ziani, Le fortune di Rodope e Damira, em primeiro plano. A ópera foi realizada trinta vezes na temporada de 1657, vendendo trinta e cinco por cento dos assentos e camarotes, totalizando 4.232 ingressos.
