This report assessed the services of all five centers/shelters (Mehwar Centre, Nablus Safe Home, the Jericho shelter, the Hayat Centre and Aman Centre (Safe Home) in Gaza) that offer anti violence services to women survivors of violence against women (VAW) in Palestine. The assessment includes the role of the National Government in institutionalizing the centers’ sheltering services and coordinating their services within the national strategies on eliminating violence against women.The assessment is undertaken in line with the “Essential Services Package for Women and Girls Subject to Violence” guidelines developed by UN Women jointly with UNFPA, where relevant, and will assess all services provided by the centers.

The aim of the study is to determine the socio demographic features of women, who stay in women's shelters. The study was conducted with 150 women, who stay at a women's shelter. In this study conducted using the survey method, a questionnaire developed by the researchers and consisted of 21 questions was utilized. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and chi-square test. The women that participated in the study had a mean age of 30. 54% were married and the mean age of first marriage was 19.04. 34% of the women eloped and 22.7% had a companionate marriage. It was determined that 81.3% had no profession, 84.3% had an income of below TL 1.000, 78.7% were the victims of violence by their partners. Also a statistically significant relationship was determined between women's exposure to violence and the degree of violence exposed with the alcohol and substance abuse of their partners.

This paper gives a general picture of women’s shelters in Turkey with its history and current state, based on findings from a field work consisting of 40 in-depth interviews with administrators and staff of women’s shelters and counseling centers. Thirteen of the interviewees are from NGOs that specialize in combating violence against women, sixteen of them are administrators at municipalities, and eleven of them are social workers and shelter directresses that are associated with the General Directorate of Social Services and Protection of Children. The study finds that municipality and NGO-run women’s shelters in Turkey need to rely on their own administrative and financial resources in order to provide services for women and children such as daycare centers, adult education or legal aid. There is no coordination or an institutionalized mechanism of information-sharing and resource pooling between the shelters.

Shelters for women are often seen as the major resource for intimate partner violence, yet few evaluations have been published. This study describes the needs, trauma symptoms and safety issues of 368 women as they enter and leave emergency shelters in ten Canadian violence against women emergency shelters; nine operated by the YWCA and a private shelter in Nova Scotia. The results capture the nature of the abuse, what the women wanted from shelter residence, the services they received, and their plans for afterwards. On shelter entry, on the Danger Assessment over 75% of women residents fell in the range of Extreme or Severe Danger. Although still in the clinical range, total and subscales on the Impact of Event Scale-Revised significantly reduced from shelter entry to exit. The women strongly endorsed the shelter in assisting them with safety, support and access to essential basic needs.
