Amphora

The paper addresses the issues of the decline of Great Scythia and the Sarmatian conquest of the Northern Black Sea region. On the basis of archaeological information the authors made a conclusion on the absence of a correlation between these events, for they are separated by a time period of over a hundred years. This idea, expressed a quarter of a century ago, has been supported by new arguments over the recent years.

Abstract: In this paper, the study of the contents of an amphora dating to the Roman Empire from the city of Vicenza in northern Italy is discussed. The amphora, along with others, formed part of the foundation of a roadway, which probably functioned for rainwater drainage. The residue in the amphora consisted of remains of very small fish mixed with fragments of crustaceans. Preservation was poor, and only a small proportion of the fragments were identifiable. Due to the small size of the remains, identification was only possible with the use of a microscope. Both freshwater and marine species were identified, suggesting that these fish came from a location on the northern Adriatic shore, where lagoons and estuaries are common. Antik Dönemlerde” tarım ürünlerinin korunması ve taşınması amacı ile çeşitli kap türleri üretilmiştir. Bu kap türlerinden en çok tercih edilenlerden biri de amphoralardır. Başlangıçta tek tip üre-tilen amphoralar, ticaretin gelişmesi ve taşınan malzemelerin çe-şitlenmesi ile birlikte çeşitli formlarda üretilmişlerdir. Erken Tunç Çağı’ndan Bizans Dönemine kadar varlığını sürdüren bu amphora-lar, büyük bir alana yayılım göstermiştir. Bunun neticesinde, bir-çok bölgede amphora üretim merkezleri kurulmuştur. Samsun Mü-zesi envanterine kayıtlı çok sayıda amphora bulunmaktadır. Bu amphoralar 11 üretim merkezi altında değerlendirilerek katalog çalışması yapılmış, eserlerin tanımlanması sağlanmıştır. Bu üretim merkezlerinin Khios, Rhodos, Knidos, Klazomenai, Lesbos, Samos, Thasos, Mende, Kholkis, Sinope ve Ganos olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmaya konu amphoraların üretildikleri yeri tespit etmek ve bir kronoloji oluşturmak oldukça güç olmakla birlikte, benzer örnek-lerle karşılaştırma yoluna gidilerek tarihlendirilmeye çalışılmış ve eserlerin tamamının MÖ 6. yüzyıldan MS 6. yüzyıla kadar devam ettiği saptanmıştır. AMPHORIC ANDALUCIAN PRODUCTION AND ORIENTALIZING FIGURATIVE DECORATION. INNER ANALYSIS AND
ICONOGRAPHIC PROYECTION: THE CERRO ALCALA’S PARADIGM. The set of amphoric ceramics with orientalizing
decoration of Cerro Alcalá (Jaén) is analyzed, and compared with other similar productions (Cabra Museum) in order to establish formal, iconographic, cronological and pottery origin similarities. The iconological repertoire and the singularity of their shapes could have direct relation with the funeral use of these forms in opposition to other varieties that seem to be away from the necropolis and could have been used in a ritual sense in spaces with a ceremonial nature in the pre-iberian protohistoric societies.

The paper features the materials of a simultaneouse complex unique for Azak dated the 1st half of the 15th century. Its dating is thoroughly substantiated. The ceramics from the site in question is mainly represented by the 1st group of products crafted by local potters, imported Trebizond amphoras and East Crimean glazed ceramics. The authors make suggestions concerning the method of analysis of statistical data on mass ceramic material. This work is the first step in the study of the period of Azaq’s existence after 1395, known from written and numismatic sources, but previously absent in archaeological materials.

Der Aufsatz behandelt die Anfangsphase der Markierung von Amphoren in Knidos (Chronologische Gruppe II). Die Tradition der regelmäßigen Stempelung der keramischen Warentransportbehälter geht auf das letzte Drittel des 4. Jhs. v. Chr. zurück (›Schiffsbugstempel‹, Chronologische Gruppe I). Im ersten Viertel des 3. Jhs. v. Chr. werden die Stempel mit παράσημος durch einzelne Monogramme, Ligaturen, Akronyme und Abbreviaturen ersetzt. Diese Periode dauert bis zu den 250er oder sogar 240er Jahren an und inkludiert unter anderem die Stempel der Gruppen Zenon A und B. Die im Gebiet des Bosporanischen Reiches entdeckten Stempel der Zenon-Gruppe stellen völlig neue Kombinationen zwischen der Namensabkürzung »ZH« und dem Emblem »Schiffsbug« (Abb. 4–7) dar und bilden offensichtlich eine Übergangsphase zwischen den Chronologischen Gruppen I und II. Zusätzlich wird eine Liste der bekannten Verbindungen der Zenon- und Sophanes-Gruppen mit den Abkürzungen des zweiten Namens vorgelegt.

This paper presents the first results of a new phase of study concerning the Roman amphorae produced in the Quinta do Rouxinol workshop, in terms of classification, definition of ceramic fabrics, quantification and statistical analysis, enhancing the methodological approach initiated in the 1990s. The methodology and presentation of results will be detailed for major local amphora productions – Almagro 51c, Almagro 50 and/ or Keay 16 and Lusitana 9 – for which a Minimum Number of 753 Individuals (MNI) was recorded, based on rim fragments, and 713 if only bases are considered. The results are consistent in these two subgroups, demonstrating the dominance of Almagro 51c, which only drops from the second quarter of the 5th century AD, due to a higher proportion of Almagro 50 and/or Keay 16 and the shift from fish-product containers to Lusitana 9 wine amphorae. In addition to the general considerations about the collection that has been studied, some of the results obtained from the analysis of the Almagro 51c subset are fully detailed, which led to the identification and characterization of three typological groups of rims and four types of bases, two of them with variants.

Using archaeological data from two closely located sites within the Sidon chora, Chhim and Jiyeh, the author considers possible oil distribution routes in Phoenicia in the Roman–Byzantine period, taking into account the impact, on this, of the administrative fragmentation of the region between the 1st and 7th centuries AD. A typology of, and data on, local and imported amphora from Chhim are presented. Various models are proposed in order to explain what appears, based on calculations relating to the output of the presses, a surplus of oil for which no corresponding evidence for exports — in the form of Chhim amphorae — can be identified. These include: alternative packaging for the oil (skins; Jiyeh amphorae-Beirut imitations); non-continuous, ad-hoc seasonal production; possible alternative markets, including Chhim’s role and context in the road networks connecting the coast, Chhim and the Beqaa Valley.

This paper presents a new series of absolute age determinations from the Zlota-Gajowizna site. These are the first chronometric data from the most important necropolis of the central group of the Globular Amphora culture. The obtained dendrochronological data, which are unique for the sites of the Late Neolithic in Poland, made it possible to specify the results of the calibration. A new interpretation of the arrangement of the cemetery has been proposed, which is the starting point for determining the GAC funeral rite in the Sandomierz Upland.
