Ananda Devi

Le remaniement épistémologique suscité par le “tournant spatial” n’a pas seulement changé la manière dont les géographes, les sociologues, les anthropologues et les historiens perçoivent leur discipline. En littérature, se sont également formalisées de nouvelles approches, résolument interdisciplinaires, qui accordent un rôle décisif à l’espace fictionnel dans l’interprétation de textes littéraires.

Prenant acte de ces nouveaux modèles d’analyse, Antje Ziethen propose de féconder les recherches actuelles en littérature francophone et postcoloniale par une étude géocentrée de quatre romans : Soupir d’Ananda Devi, _Le Silence des Chagos _de Shenaz Patel, _Douceurs du bercail _d’Aminata Sow Fall et _Riwan ou le chemin de sable _de Ken Bugul. Mobilisant des outils théoriques provenant de la littérature, de la géographie, des études postcoloniales, des gender studies, de la sociologie et de la philosophie, l’auteure scrute les processus spatiaux, sociaux et psychiques ayant lieu dans plusieurs “espèces d’espace” telles que la diaspora, la nation, l’île, la ville, la prison, le chemin, le bateau et l’aéroport.

Exposant les fonctions structurante, narrative et signifiante de l’espace fictionnel au sein du corpus, Géo/Graphies postcoloniales. La poétique de l’espace dans le roman mauricien et sénégalais réfute l’idée que l’espace est simple décor, arrière-plan, contenant de l’intrigue ou encore mode de description. Il se fait plutôt moteur de l’intrigue et médium qui permet aux auteurs de déployer leur verbe poétique, de créer des mondes possibles, d’articuler une critique sociale et de proposer des géographies alternatives aux modèles référentiels.

- On 12 March 2018, Mauritius celebrated fifty years as an independent nation amidst much fanfare. Yet behind the nation’s official image of multicultural ‘unity in diversity’ lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. This book analyses how the idea of belonging – a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people – is articulated in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels. The island-nation’s complex, contested history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Adopting an eclectic, multi-dimensional theoretical framework, Waters explores how affirmative forms of affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, the exclusionary ‘politics of belonging’ at communal, national and international levels. Waters offers in-depth and comparative analyses of novels by Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their striking thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a strong, common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.

In response to Sandra Ponzanesi’s call to devise better tools of analysis for understanding how postcolonial literature operates as both commodity and aesthetic, this article claims that one of the roles of the postcolonial novel in the early twenty-first century is to counter the notion that culture and poverty exist in a cause-effect relationship. Drawing on novels by Ananda Devi and Dany Laferrière, this article considers how using poverty
as a category of analysis might allow
us as readers to better understand more recent dynamics of the literary postcolonial culture industry.

In contemporary women’s writing, mythical models of self-empowerment and personal growth permeate a number of novels from various cultural backgrounds and geographic areas. I will focus on the transformation of a major legend, that of Orpheus, which had influenced all Western literature since Greek and Roman times. Orpheus the poet who mourns the untimely death of his wife symbolizes the divide between the male and the female in the West, with Eurydice relinquished to the underworld. In contemporary women’s literature, we witness a radical shift from this paradigm, with a new Eurydice emerging from the unseen, in order to expound her vision of the world she wants to live in. This new figure is linked to various other feminine mythical figures of empowerment, including a new Ariadne and even new forms of Mahadevi. From a transnational perspective, women writers contribute to a reinvented transcultural dialogue that better represents the new conditions of our lives. Ananda Devi (Mauritius Island—France and Switzerland), together with Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, a North-American author of Indian descent, are both important builders of connections between East and West, especially in their rewriting of the figure of Draupadi and other major mythical paradigms.

Cet article s’attachera aux travaux d’Ananda Devi en tant qu’écrivain-traductrice. Il portera essentiellement sur sa traduction en français du roman de David Dabydeen The Counting House et sur son auto-traduction de Pagli vers l’anglais. Le caractère défectif associé à la condition ancillaire du traducteur sera mis en parallèle avec la traversée des eaux impures du kala pani afin de montrer en quoi les pratiques traduisantes d’Ananda Devi s’inscrivent dans la transgression et offrent une véritable poétique de la traduction. Cet art du passage consistera à rétablir des liens transocéaniques par-delà des codes convenus, guidés par le motif de la trace.

Lors de ce colloque portant sur l’(es) « Excentricité(s) », nous proposons de nous pencher sur les littératures francophones, en cela qu’elles apparaissent comme dé-centrées par rapport au pôle d’attraction français. Réfléchir à l’excentricité de ces littératures nous renvoie aux notions d’altérité, de marges : ces littératures de langue française ont longtemps été considérées comme autres – et ont subi, de fait, les effets d’une hiérarchisation parfois drastique. Ainsi, elles apparaissent dans leurs ressemblances / divergences face à une norme qui, française, est essentiellement parisienne. Comment dès lors concevoir les rapports entre centre (au singulier, donc) et périphéries (au pluriel) ?
Nous attachant dans un premier temps aux questionnements soulevés par Pascale Casanova dans La République mondiale des Lettres (1999), par le Manifeste "Pour une "littérature-monde" en français", et par Anne Douaire-Banny dans Remembrances (2014), cette réflexion se consacrera par la suite à analyser les tensions, les phénomènes d’attraction / répulsion, dans les œuvres romanesques de Calixthe Beyala, d’Ananda Devi et de Maryse Condé, dont les écritures se rejoignent dans leurs dimensions sociales et politiques. En effet, comment ne pas lire leurs productions artistiques à l’aune du postcolonialisme, rendant compte de l’ex-centricité fondamentale de leurs œuvres ? Le choix d’un corpus constitué d’auteures sera l’occasion de croiser notre étude avec une autre perspective critique, celui des études de genre. Être femme et être auteure renvoient à une double marginalité, qui sous-tend et fonde leurs écritures. Éminemment protéiforme, le genre romanesque est interrogé dans cette double excentricité, et le roman se voit ainsi renouvelé par ces femmes de langue française.

Le présent article propose une analyse du topos insulaire dans Soupir de l'écrivaine mauricienne Ananda Devi. L'île y transcende ses frontières physiques et devient le médium d'un discours littéraire sur l'esclavage et ses conséquences dans la région de l'océan Indien. Au-delà de sa géographie, l'île se transforme ainsi en espace social, monument historique, état psychologique et écriture. Véritable poétique de l'espace, l'île et le texte fusionnent dans un tissu romanesque organique que nous appelons «textîle».
