Ancient Roman Quarries

Um öffentliche und private Bauwerke auf luxuriöseste Art  mit Naturstein  auszustatten, importierten die Römer auch in die fernen nordwestlichen Provinzen Niedergermanien und Gallia Belgica große Mengen verschiedener Gesteine aus dem gesamten römischen Imperium. Zahlreiche Steinbrüche wurden zudem in der Region selbst eröffnet, um die vielen Baustellen mit kostengünstigeren Dekorsteinen zu beliefern.
Schon seit langem sind am Felsberg (Felsenmeer) im Odenwald römische Steinbrüche bekannt, in denen ein schwarz-weiß gesprenkelter und als Quarz-Diorit kartierter Granitoid abgebaut wurde. Zahlreiche römische Abbauspuren sind vielerorts zu sehen.
Unter den archäologischen Funden in Trier treten zwei Varietäten eines schwarz-weiß gesprenkelten Gestein auf, die dem Felsberger Granitoid ähnlich sehen: ein mittelkörniger und ein grobkörniger Typ. Um die vermutete Herkunft dieser Gesteine aus den Vorkommen im Odenwald zu verifizieren, wurden mehrere archäologische Objekte (Säule „der Domstein“, Pilasterfragment, Inkrustationsplatten) aus Trier beprobt und mit Referenzproben aus dem Odenwald verglichen. Dazu wurden etwa 20 Referenzproben im gesamten Areal des Felsenmeeres am Felsberg gesammelt, um die Variationsbreite des Granitoidvorkommens zu erfassen.
Archäologische und geologische Proben wurden petrographisch und geochemisch (RFA und LA-ICP-MS) analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Proben vom Felsberg sowohl petrographisch als auch geochemisch ziemlich homogen sind. Sie bestehen aus Plagioklas, wenig Kalifeldspat, Quarz, Biotit und Hornblende. Geochemisch handelt es sich um Diorit.
Die mittelkörnigen Gesteinsproben der archäologischen Funde (Domstein, Inkrustationen und Pilasterfragment) zeigen eine ausgezeichnete Übereinstimmung mit dem Granitoid vom Felsberg, Bei den grobkörnigen Gesteinsproben (Inkrustationsplatten) handelt es sich dagegen um einen Gabbro, der zurzeit keinem bekannten römischen Vorkommen zugeordnet werden kann. Seine Provenienz vom Felsberg kann jedoch sicher ausgeschlossen werden.

El proceso constructivo en la arquitectura monumental romana conllevaba habitualmente la realización de una serie de procedimientos diversos, cuyo resultado final era la obra arquitectónica. Fases como la extracción de materiales constructivos, su transporte hasta el lugar de trabajo, la labra de elementos decorativos, su replanteo en obra, su colocación y su fijación eran necesarias en toda actividad constructiva de cierta entidad. La ejecución de cada una de estas fases requería del uso de unas técnicas, métodos e instrumentos específicos y determinados que dejaron su correspondiente huella material en muchos de los diferentes elementos que conformaban la arquitectura de época romana.

La trachite euganea, una roccia vulcanica estratta dai Colli Euganei, è una delle risorse lapidee cavate sin dall’età antica nell’attuale comprensorio veneto. Le peculiari proprietà meccaniche contribuirono a una larga diffusione della trachite, in particolar modo in età romana, ma già nel corso della protostoria. Il materiale lapideo euganeo venne impiegato in tutta la Regio X (Venetia et Histria), ma anche nell’Aemilia; verso ovest la trachite giunse a Milano/Mediolanum, in Transpadana e a Villa del Foro/Forum Fulvii in Liguria, mentre a sud è documentata sino a Urbisaglia/Urbs Salvia. Questa pietra trovò impiego tanto nelle fondazioni quanto negli alzati degli edifici, rispettivamente come blocchi sbozzati oppure rifiniti, ma venne messa in opera principalmente nelle pavimentazioni stradali. Basoli trachitici provenienti dai Colli Euganei sono stati identificati verso est sino ad Aquileia, ma risultano utilizzati anche nelle maggiori città sorte lungo la via Aemilia e in un selciato di Ancona, centro più a meridione rispetto al bacino di approvvigionamento in cui è stato documentato l’uso della trachite in un tratto viario. Oltre che in ambito architettonico, la trachite euganea fu sfruttata per produrre manufatti, principalmente strumenti per la macinazione, ma si realizzarono sovente anche cippi, stele e monumenti iscritti.
Prendendo le mosse dallo studio analitico di questi ritrovamenti, l’Autore propone un tentativo di ricostruzione delle dinamiche di diffusione del materiale trachitico in età romana: un’analisi combinata di carattere petrografico e geochimico consente  infatti di determinare le cave euganee dalle quali venne estratto il materiale per la realizzazione degli elementi architettonici o dei manufatti; sulla base di queste stesse indagini è inoltre possibile ricavare informazioni sul ciclo di attivazione, sfruttamento e abbandono dei siti estrattivi sui Colli Euganei. Allo stesso modo, uno studio integrato della cronologia dei campioni, delle loro cave di provenienza e dei centri in cui sono stati esportati permette di elaborare riflessioni attorno alle dinamiche commerciali e all’impiego della trachite euganea in Italia settentrionale nel corso dell’età romana.

Until now are known the ancient quarries in the region of Ilindentzi, but they have never been neither described, nor precisely located. Visiting the place, we have discovered them, situated over the village. We have no data about their status – to which city they belonged, to Parthicopolis or to Neine/Tristolos; or to the empery; or to the emperor himself. Analogically to the quarries Isterna around Nicopolis ad Istrum we can suppose, that in our case they belonged to the emperor Trajan too. Later probably the quarries were given to the city. We suppose that a small military unit has guarded these quarries and the route, connecting the city with Serdica and with its derivation to the valley of Nestos. The stone in these quarries belongs to the week dolomite marbles and has white, greyish-white and grey colour. Namely from here is coming the basic production for architectonic details, round sculpture and tomb steles.
The second region, rich with ten quarries, is the valley of the river Sandanska Bistritza, in the proximity of the northern part of Parthicopolis. Two types of granite is coming from here, used for columns, capitals, street pavement, bordures, steps and postaments/arae for round sculpture. Here on the place, judging by the remnants, have been disposed some workshops, making semi-products, additionally finished at the place of building itself.
The third region with several quarries is situated around the village of Petrovo, which according to our preliminary research is the basic one for the Early Byzantine period, rich of calcite, white and patterned marble. The majority of architectonic decoration of the Early Byzantine basilicas of Parthicopolis and its territory is made of the local marble.
Except stone ateliers, in the region in Roman and Early Byzantine period are working decades of sculptural ones. A bigger part of them can be traced by their iconographic-stylistic signs. The only written witness, up to our days originate from the village of Kovachevo. The name of the stonemason Gelaseynos is of a probable Asia Minor origin. But except that in the tomb steles can be traces close similarities with the production of Thessalonica, as well of local sculpturing of Macedonian masters.
The craft of stone and sculpture were the basic activities, practiced in the city and its territory and the essential ones for its prosperity.

Zur Ausstattung der öffentlichen und privaten Bauten mit Natursteininkrustationen importierten die Römer Gesteine über weite Strecken aus allen Regionen des Römischen Imperiums. Um hohe Transportkosten zu vermeiden waren sie zudem stets bemüht, nutzbare Gesteinsvorkommen in der Region aufzuspüren und auszubeuten.
Unter den archäologischen Funden in Trier und Xanten sind ca. 50 Steinsorten überliefert. Rund 30 Sorten stammen aus diversen bekannten mediterranen Vorkommen, ca. zehn weitere Sorten aus verschiedenen Vorkommen in Frankreich und Belgien. Rund zehn Natursteinsorten konnten keinem bekannten mediterranen Vorkommen oder Steinbrüchen in den Nachbarprovinzen zugeordnet werden. So wurden in den vergangenen Jahren zahlreiche Geländebegehungen in verschiedenen deutschen Vorkommen durchgeführt, um die von den Römern ausgebeuteten Natursteinvorkommen ausfindig zu machen. Referenzproben wurden in zwei Marmor- und einem Dioritvorkommen im Odenwald, in zwei Trachytvorkommen nahe Berkum am Rhein und in rund zehn Diabasvorkommen in der Gegend Trier gesammelt und anschließend zusammen mit den archäologischen Proben petrographisch (Polarisationsmikroskop), geochemisch (RFA und LA-ICP-MS) und isotopengeochemisch (Marmor, δ18O und δ13C) untersucht.

The Hispano-Roman city of Valeria, in the province of Cuenca (Spain), have significant archaeological and architectural remains that are well known in the academic world and also testify to the splendor and development which reached that city.
Less known are the quarries that are in the vicinity of the city that provided most of the blocks that made his public and monumental architecture.
The existence in abundance of a quality stone material, the geomorphological arrangement of the rocky banks that facilitated its massive exploitation, the existence of roads in her immediate environment that allowed the evacuation and transportation of mined material to its final location in work, are features that facilitated their exploitation in the roman age.
The preserved remains and the finding of some semi-finished stone elements are the starting point to establish the system of exploitation and utilization of construction resources in the immediate environment of this Roman city.

Il progetto di ricerca tratta l’approvvigionamento, l’impiego e la diffusione in età romana della trachite euganea, con lo scopo di ricostruire dinamiche di carattere estrattivo, produttivo, commerciale ed economico gravitanti attorno alla risorsa lapidea estratta sin da età protostorica nel bacino dei Colli Euganei e commerciata ampiamente in tutta l’Italia settentrionale per tutto l’evo antico. Completata la revisione dell'edito e ultimato il censimento presso le istituzioni museali del Veneto, i dati sono stati riversati in una banca dati connessa a un sistema GIS. Contestualmente è stato effettuato il campionamento sistematico di strade e ponti romani in trachite della regione.

Un piu' approfondito approccio metodologico ai problemi delle analisi archeometriche nello studio dei pavimenti romani: è preso, in particolare, in considerazione il caso esemplare del mosaico pavimentale di via Gorani a Milano. Le analisi petrografiche dei pavimenti di epoca romana permettono di ricostruire una mappa dettagliata delle cave e delle zone estrattive in un contesto locale.

La monumentalización de la ciudad hispanorromana de Segobriga preciso de importantes cantidades de material constructivo pétreo para llevarse a cabo. Las canteras situadas en las cercanías del yacimiento surtieron de bloques las necesidades constructivas requeridas. La cercanía, el sistema de explotación y la presencia de una vía de comunicación directa con el centro urbano fueron factores decisivos para el desarrollo de los trabajos extractivos.
