La tesi presenta inizialmente il pensiero di Jacques Derrida sull'animalità. Il tema affrontato è la sovranità dell'uomo sul resto dei viventi, in particolare nei riguardi della discriminazione dell'animalità. Nei capitoli a seguire si attua un'emancipazione dell'animalità e non dall'animalità come la corrente umanista voleva. Attraverso l'ontogenesi del concetto di "umanità" viene decostruito il costrutto che sorregge la soglia che divide l'uomo dagli animali, laddove essi partecipano all'animalità in maniere differenti. L'emergenza di questa composizione dei temi trattati si erge ad azione esemplare con cui Derrida, prima di morire, ha lasciato delle tracce da seguire durante il ricevimento del premio Adorno.

With the publication of an extended editorial titled 'Animal Studies and Art: Elephants in the Room' by Giovanni Aloi, Editor in Chief of 'Antennae', the journal embarks on a new and challenging year-long project constituting somewhat of a departure from the theoretical approaches of animal studies for the purpose of conceiving new productivities specific to art. This project is provocatively titled 'Beyond Animal Studies'.
At the end of March 2015 the publication of two installments dedicated to multispecies-Intra-action: new ways of thinking multispecies aesthetics through Karen Barad’s agential realism (co-edited with artist/curator Madeleine Boyd) will mark the beginning of this journey. This first offering will be followed by an issue edited by artists and theorists Suzanne Anker and Sabine Flach focusing on the proceedings of an exciting conference dedicated to bioart titled 'Naturally Hypernatural' that took place in New York (November 2014). The last segment of this publishing project will comprise two issues on art and environment that will be made available in December 2015 and March 2016.
'Animal Studies and Art: Elephants in the Room’ is the developed and expanded version of the keynote address Giovanni Aloi gave at the University of Wurzburg in autumn 2014. Its content stems from a genuine sense of concern with regards to current affairs in animal studies, its involvement with contemporary art, and the challenges scholars and artists face in engaging with multidisciplinarity within this context.

Here in Hawaii, the only ones in the rat race are mongooses, along with Federal and State officials wanting to kill both rats and mongooses.  However, there is a big flaw in the recent Federal and State proposal for statewide eradication of Hawaii's rodents and mongooses, currently under review.  Here is the argument against eradication.

Theologian Jurgen Moltmann has developed an elaborate and highly imaginative theology of the ultimate redemption of all of life, all of nature, all of the cosmos, and all of humanity, through the cosmic event of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But there have been criticisms made of Moltmann’s descriptions of the New Creation. This paper describes Moltmann’s theology of the New Creation, and also offers some assessments of its strengths and weaknesses.

Extraterritorial jurisdiction stands at the juncture of international law and animal law and promises to open a path to understanding and resolving the global problems that challenge the core of animal law. As corporations have relocated and the animal industry (agriculture, medical research, entertainment, etc.) has dispersed its production facilities across the territories of multiple states, regulatory gaps and fears of a race to the bottom have become a pressing issue of global policy. This book provides enough background to allow readers to understand why extraterritorial jurisdiction must respond to these developments, counters objections that readers might raise, and describes how to improve animal law in tandem. The heart of the work is a fully-fledged catalogue of options for extraterritorial jurisdiction, which states can employ to strengthen their animal laws. The book offers top-down perspectives drawn from general international law and trade law, and complements them by a bottom-up up view from the perspective of animal law. The approach connects the law of jurisdiction to substantive law and opens up deeper questions about moral directionality, state and corporate duties owed animals, and the comparative advantages of constitutional, criminal, and administrative animal law. To ensure that extraterritorial animal law does not become complicit in oppressing ethnic and cultural minorities, the book offers critical interdisciplinary perspectives, informed by posthumanist and postcolonialist discourse. Readers will further learn when and how extraterritorial jurisdiction violates international law, and the consequences of exercising it illegally under international law. This work answers questions about how and why extraterritorial jurisdiction can overcome the steepest hurdles for animal law and help move us toward a just global interspecies community.

Despite increasing public attention to animal suffering, little seems to have changed: Human beings continue to exploit billions of animals in factory farms, medical laboratories, and elsewhere. In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Lisa Kemmerer shows how spiritual writings and teachings in seven major religious traditions can help people to consider their ethical obligations toward other creatures.

Dr. Kemmerer examines the role of nonhuman animals in scripture and myth, in the lives of religious exemplars, and by drawing on foundational philosophical and moral teachings. She begins with a study of indigenous traditions around the world, then focuses on the religions of India (Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain) and China (Daoism and Confucianism), and finally, religions of the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). At the end of each chapter, Kemmerer explores the inspiring lives and work of contemporary animal advocates who are motivated by a personal religious commitment.

Animals and World Religions demonstrates that rethinking how we treat nonhuman animals is essential for anyone claiming one of the world's great religions.

E, indo mais longe, Catarina Amaral propôs, dentro do espírito da mesma Lei, consequências possíveis ao domínio sucessório. O estudo ao qual escrevo com muito gosto esta nota introdu-tória não envereda pela localização teórica do animal no es-pecismo (de que a concepção teriofílica será uma dimensão ainda hoje relevante), assumindo antes a natureza autónoma dos animais de estimação (de «nova categoria» fala a autora), e não deixa por isso de os considerar possíveis titulares de ca-pacidade sucessória. Despite their centrality to the operation of contemporary accredited zoo and aquarium institutions, the work of zoo veterinarians has rarely been the focus of a critical analysis in the social science and humanities. Drawing on in-depth interviews and observations of zoo and aquarium veterinarians, mainly in Europe and North America, this book highlights the recent transformation that has occurred in the zoo veterinarian profession during a time of ecological crisis, and what these changes can teach us about our rapidly changing planet.

Zoo vets, Braverman instructs us with a wink, have "gone wild." Originally an individual welfare-centered profession, these experts are increasingly concerned with the sustainability of wild animal populations and with ecological health. The story of zoo vets going wild—in their subjects of care, their motivations, and their ethical standards, as well as in their professional practices and scientific techniques—is also a story about zoo animals gone wild, wild animals encroaching the zoo, and, more generally, a wild world that is becoming "zoo-ified." Such transformations have challenged existing veterinary standards and practices. Exploring the regulatory landscape that governs the work of zoo and aquarium veterinarians, Braverman traverses the gap between the hard and soft sciences and between humans and nonhumans.

At the intersection of animal studies, socio-legal studies, and science and technology studies, this book will appeal not only to those interested in zoos and in animal welfare, but also to scholars in the posthumanities.

This chapter highlights several criticisms of zoos, then provides a vision for new zoos: “nooz.” Offering a new name to these institutions makes a clear break from the old model, which is fundamentally exploitative. The common denominator between zoos and nooz is that both foster nonhumans who are neither domestic pets nor farmed animals—they keep “wild” animals. Nooz are nonexploitative, benevolent, and are designed for nonhumans, to provide safe-haven for those individuals who have been misused by zoos or science, or injured by humans. This essay also explores “benevolent” reasons for keeping nonhuman animals in zoos, such as captive breeding programs and injured wildlife, and acceptable parameters for nooz, including such topics as retribution for previous exploitation and the problem of carnivory.

This 5-part series of articles  (written as an undergraduate major in Philosophy and Government) at the College of William and Mary) is the first major study of the animal rights and animal liberation movement that was fully emerging in the United States.  It examines the organization, structure, goals, and ideas of those working to protect non-human animals.  (Note: unpublished but also available upon request from the author or though the library at the College of William and Mary—and a separate part of this work— is an original theory and analysis of "Inter-specific Justice" (i.e., for both human and non-human animals).

Commentary for "The Psychology of Cows" by Lori Marino and Kristin Allen

If we come to find that cows have rich mental lives, are there ethically important consequences for how we relate to and treat them? A positive answer to this question motivates the review paper, but the question itself remains unexamined. While it might seem obvious that anything with a mental life is worthy of moral considerability, what that moral considerability amounts to will differ depending on the moral theory we accept, the context, and the particular mental capacities that the individual has. Furthermore, as we learn more about plants, it has become tempting to talk about plant minds, feelings, learning and cognition, and to examine the ethical implications (

Based on the ancestral/indigenous practice of Midmong, the paper affirmed midmong as viable spirituality for  redeeming the groaning creation. Because, symbolically and sacramentally in midmong, God’s rest is reenacted for the up keeping of creation, their survival with an anticipated hope.  The paper asserts, ancestors as the first ecologists for they practiced midmong spirituality, knowing the fact that everything in this cosmos are intricately dependent on one another for its existence. “If we hurt nature, nature will hurt us,”  hence, deliberate care is imperative; otherwise there is no escaping from the catastrophe that would come.

The following is a draft excerpt from my forthcoming book, Eco-Nihilism: The Philosophical Geopolitics of the Climate Change Apocalypse. It concerns the the commodification of nonhuman animals, particularly endangered species.

Climate change makes of us all potentially endangered species, human and nonhuman. Some are “more immediately endangered” and some “less,” but no desirable future, at least as I’ve argued here, can be reconciled with homo Colossus’ quantifying and commodifying valuation of species and ecosystems.  It’s not just that climate instability makes a mockery of the concept “endangered species.” It’s that the way we assess the value of a species in terms of whether there are enough of them such that we’re “safe” in treating them as disposable eviscerates the world itself as a locus of experience worth wanting. In the pathology of conquest capital, an endangered species is simply a special kind of pricey commodity—like diamonds or honest politicians.

For the conquest capitalist, the meaning of “endangered” can only be calculated as price; the cost to salvage, the savings to let go to extinction. Endangered, moreover, signals “something important” only if it’s something in demand; hence the value of gorillas is a function of advertising, their beneficiaries the advertisers.

RESUMO A preocupação com a crescente população de animais de estimação abandonada e a maneira como é tratada no ambiente doméstico estimularam a realização do projeto. Nosso objetivo foi conscientizar crianças para a responsabilidade em possuir um animal de estimação e incentivá-las a cuidar corretamente de seus animais, despertando desde a infância a posse responsável. As visitas foram realizadas em escolas do subúrbio da cidade de João Pessoa, totalizando 440 alunos, com idade entre dois a 13 anos. As apresentações foram desenvolvidas na seguinte sequência: 1) apresentação da equipe; 2) atividades interativas, como a realização de questionário oral para quantificar crianças que possuíam animais, qual espécie, como cuidavam e quem realmente cuidava destes; 3) realização do teatro de fantoches (crianças entre dois a nove anos) e palestra (crianças acima de nove anos); 4) exposição de vídeo educativo; 5) entrega de panfletos sobre a posse responsável aos pais das crianças, aos professores e funcionários da escola. Como esperado, a maioria da população de animais que as crianças possuíam era composta por cães, em seguida por gatos, pássaros, hamsters, peixes e jabutis. Normalmente, a maioria apenas brinca com os animais e os pais ou cuidadores alimentam, dão banho e limpam os dejetos. As crianças desconhecem as doenças que podem acometer os animais e a elas mesmas (zoonoses), assim como os professores que assistiam às palestras. Nota-se que há pouca informação sobre a posse responsável dos animais de estimação, o que demonstra a importância da realização deste trabalho quanto ao seu caráter educativo e formação de jovens conscientes.

This MRP explores the concept of the will in the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, and explains how his theory of the will influenced his ethical thought concerning nonhuman animals. Part one considers four theories of the will prior to Schopenhauer: Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas. This review enables the reader to understand the dramatic shift in the interpretation of the will and the role it plays in Schopenhauer’s metaphysics and ethics. Part two focuses on Schopenhauer’s interpretation of the will, which led to a dramatically enlightened animal ethic when compared to his predecessors. The final section of the MRP explores the question of why Schopenhauer’s thought has lacked receptivity, and posits further questions to be pursued regarding this topic.

The international protest surrounding the Copenhagen Zoo's recent decision to kill a healthy giraffe in the name of population management reveals a deep moral tension between contemporary zoological display practices – which induce zoo-goers to view certain animals as individuals, quasi-persons, or friends – and the traditional objectives of zoos, which ask us only to view animals as specimens. I argue that these zoological display practices give rise to moral obligations on the part of zoos to their visitors, and thus ground indirect duties on behalf of zoos to their animals. I conclude that zoos might take on interspecies friendship as a new zoological objective.

LOH Wan Inn and I wrote a children's book entitled "Animal Olympics", the story of nonhuman animals getting together to put on their own Olympic Games, highlighting the unique abilities of various animals, e.g., being the fastest on 8 legs. In the story, two animals that don't seem to have special abilities are snails and humans, but then the animals realize that snails can use their slime for the finish line, and humans can write the story of the Animal Olympics. Alejandro Ayala Polanco, a teacher and animal activist in Chile, translated the book into Spanish and published it online.

Anotace:
Utrpení zvířat využívaných člověkem je závažným problémem vyvěrajícím ze způsobu života současné civilizace. Zvířata chovaná pro hospodářské účely, pokusy či pouhou zábavu jsou zejména z důvodu obrovské (a z historického hlediska nebývalé) intenzity chovů a způsobu exploatace často vystavena nevyhovujícím životním podmínkám a zacházení působícímu utrpení, což se pomocí stávajících právních nástrojů ochrany zvířat zatím daří napravovat pouze v omezené míře. Myšlenka řešit problém strádání zvířat založením zvířecích práv obdobných právům lidským pochází z prostředí ochranářských hnutí v USA, odkud se rozšířila do západní Evropy. Téma práv zvířat, v němž lze nalézt široké spektrum názorů od hájení této myšlenky až po její kritiku a odsuzování, je tak nejen závažné a aktuální, ale také plné emocí a kontroverze, a proto je zpravidla spojováno spíše s aktivismem než s vědou. Záměrem trojice editorů z Ústavu státu a práva Akademie věd bylo odhlédnout od schémat vlastních aktivistickým hnutím a shromáždit k tématu práv zvířat poznatky těch vědních disciplín, jež mají k němu nejvíce co říci. V knize Kapitoly o právech zvířat se tak setkávají zástupci oborů filosofie, etiky, biologie a práva, aby společně hledali odpovědi na otázky po smyslu a opodstatněnosti konceptu zvířecích práv, a zároveň ukázali, jak je problém zvířat reflektován v současné české společnosti.

První část knihy přestavuje a analyzuje důležité argumenty z oblasti filosofie, etiky a biologie.  Věnuje se podrobnému rozboru současných etických teorií, včetně jejich historického kontextu a vývoje, ukazuje jejich silné a slabé stránky, a pojednává rovněž velmi zevrubně o pojmu zvířecí mysli v kontextu současné filosofie mysli. Shromážděné poznatky oborů první části knihy jsou následně argumentační základnou pro sérii kapitol právních. Ty se snaží uchopit navrhovaný koncept práv zvířat po stránce právně-teoretické a uvažují nad možností zařazení práv zvířat do stejného právního prostoru, v jakém se nyní nacházejí lidská práva. Analyzují hlubší souvislosti problematiky, představované na prvním místě konceptem právní subjektivity, odkrývají vztah mezi současnou právní úpravou ochrany zvířat a praxí, ale i nejistotu, s jakou si idea práv zvířat jen pozvolna hledá cestu do vážně vedené veřejné diskuse. Kniha potěší zejména všechny zájemce o hlubší vhled do pojednávané problematiky.

Future generations, wildlife, and natural resources – collectively referred to as “the voiceless” in this book – are the most vulnerable and least equipped populations to protect themselves from the impacts of global climate change. Domestic and international law protections are beginning to recognize rights and responsibilities that apply to the voiceless community; however, these legal developments have yet to be pursued in a collective manner and have not been considered together in the context of climate change and climate justice. This book first identifies the common vulnerabilities of the voiceless in the Anthropocene era. It then proposes how the law can evolve to protect their interests more effectively through a stewardship-focused and rights-based system derived from the mandate inherent in the concept of sustainable development.

Entrenamiento de psitácidos para la participación voluntaria durante procedimientos veterinarios Una de las principales funciones del médico veterinario en los zoológicos, santuarios y otros centros de conservación que albergan fauna salvaje es garantizar el bienestar de los animales y no úicamente la salud física de éstos, que aunque es parte fundamental del bienestar de un individuo no es su totalidad. El control sobre las interacciones con el ambiente y la posibilidad de decidir, por ejemplo, son factores de gran relevancia para el bienestar de los animales. Las conductas de evasión y escape asociadas a miedo suelen aumentar considerablemente cuando el veterinario clínico aparce en escena, los animales aprenden que su presencia está asociada a eventos desagradables de los que no pueden huír. Temple Grandin sostiene que el miedo es capaz de producir un mayor incremento de las hormonas asociadas con el estrés que muchos factores físicos adversos, esto aunado al grado de incomodidad que el confinamiento y sus consecuencias provoca en las aves supone que el nivel de bienestar de los animales sea pobre y sin duda, se verá reflejando en la expresión de comportamientos anormales. Convencionalmente se opta por solicitar al cuidador que confine al animal en un espacio reducido para que a la llegada del veterinaio su manejo se simplifique a la contención física y/o química para la posterior atención veterinaria requerida. Estas prácticas sin duda afectarán el trabajo de cuidadores y el bienstar de las aves pues se perderá la confianza, fundamental para la seguridad y bienestar de cuidadores y animales.

The increasing emergence of animal matters on the international plane and their newly gained prominence in public debates create hope that animals will truly find a meaningful place in our society as sentient beings with intrinsic interests. But far beyond hope, what can be done, legally, to push the development of more cogent legal rules on the human-animal relationship beyond illusionary hope, namely to a realistic expectation? This article approaches this question from an economic and an international law perspective. It first studies why the regulation of activities impacting on the welfare of animals is needed as a first step, drawing on arguments from regulatory theories. It then examines the existing international paradigms governing the human-animal relationship, as well as the benefits of international law vs. national law in regulating animal matters pro futuro, and subsequently assesses the potential of international law for the future development of animal law.

RESUMEN Incluir a los animales no humanos en la comunidad moral, política y jurídica es una idea que ha cobrado auge en las últimas décadas. Aunque es un tema cuya sede principal está en la Filosofía y la Ética, el Derecho no ha sido ajeno a este debate. Así, se observan ejercicios jurisprudenciales, especialmente a nivel constitucional, donde hay una clara tendencia a considerar a los animales no humanos como sujetos de derecho y América Latina es rica en ejemplos de este tipo de avance legal. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar algunos casos relevantes en los que las decisiones de jurisdicción constitucional latinoamericana reconocieron la personalidad jurídica de algunos animales no humanos estableciendo un nuevo paradigma de relación humano-animal desde el Derecho. ABSTRACT Including non-human animals in the moral, political and legal community is an idea that has gained momentum in recent decades. Although it is a subject whose main seat is in Philosophy and Ethics, Law has not been alien to this debate. Thus, jurisprudential exercises are observed, especially at the constitutional level, where there is a clear tendency to consider non-human animals as subjects of law and Latin America is rich in examples of this type of legal advance. The objective of this paper is to analyze some relevant cases in which the decisions of Latin American constitutional jurisdiction recognized the legal personality of some non-human animals establishing a new paradigm of human-animal relationship from the Law.

In Animals Ethics and the Law, you will think critically about the human-animal connection. Together, we will pursue meaningful investigations into what morality demands when it comes to human-animal interactions, and we will consider what legal systems must do to promote flourishing human-animal communities. This is a service learning course, and we will work in partner with All Friends Sanctuary, a new local Las Vegas farmed animal sanctuary. While you will not be required to physically visit the sanctuary, you will “visit” the sanctuary virtually, and based on these “visits,” you will spend approximately 10 hours over the course of the semester helping to build aspects of the sanctuary’s website, to include: developing animal sponsorship packages, basic website design, and/or t-shirt design. This is a unique opportunity we have to help a brand-new sanctuary in its very important efforts to help save animal lives. The service learning component of the course will begin during week 5, as we discuss farmed animal welfare.

The book Enrichment and Well-Being of Mammals in Captivity was created as a tool to improve the lives of captive animals who are undergoing rehabilitation or cannot be released back into the wild. It includes 250 pages with detailed information and photos on the types and stages of environmental enrichment, plus a chapter on animal rights and animal welfare with tools for measuring animal welfare in captive settings.

Humanity's basic virtue is the recognition and acceptance of reason as a guide to action. In this vein, this paper contributes to the reader a better understanding of existence as this paper analyses the different views of suffering and coping, which also includes the reflections and examples of the author. Though happiness is the moral purpose of life, this research lays the groundwork for realization as we affirm the reality of suffering, especially in the present challenges of the Corona Virus 19 pandemic. As humans, we need not inhibit ourselves but rather affirm our potentialities. This research uses parallelism of philosophies, both Western and Eastern that expounds and argues on human adaptation vis-à-vis suffering that can be seen as antagonistic or can fulfill our potentialities. Further, the philosophical views can be viewed in a holistic approach-metaphysical, psychological, and ethical. This paper unfolds important questions that contribute to the quest for philosophical truth, broadening and deepening the meaning of life at the present predicament. Finally, amidst the world's dust and grime, this work imparts compassion, care, optimist, and hope.

Transgenic technology has the potential of medical therapy, but it raises questions about these issues:• creation of new life forms and crossing species boundaries• long-term effects on human health and the environment• blending of nonhuman animal and human DNA• unintended personal, social, and cultural consequences

The emotional exchange between so-called “humans” and more-than-human creatures is an overlooked phenomenon in societies characterized by the ubiquitous deaths of animals. This text offers examples of people across diverse disciplines and perspectives—from biomedical research to black theology to art—learning and performing emotions, expanding their desires, discovering new ways to behave, and altering their sense of self, purpose, and community because of passionate, but not romanticized, attachments to animals. By articulating the emotional ties that bind them to specific animals’ lives and deaths, these authors play host to creaturely ghosts who reorient their world vision and work in the world, offering examples of affect and feeling needed to enliven multi-species ethics.

We are all opposed—at least ostensibly—to mindless animal cruelty. Almost no one defended Michael Vick and his cohorts when they tortured and killed dogs for their dog fighting ring. Imagine Michael Vick had been selling a product—say dog-skin handbags from the “losing” dogs—that financially supported and enabled the continued torture of more dogs. We would not only not buy these dog-skin handbags, we would boycott the handbags and urge others not to buy them as well. This essay argues that we are a lot more like Michael Vick than we care to imagine. No, we’re not highly paid football players and we won’t go to jail or go bankrupt for our participation in animal cruelty. But like Michael Vick, we participate in animal cruelty, and we are similarly raised in a way that we do not see its wrongfulness. How do we participate in animal cruelty? By spending billions of dollars each year financially supporting an incredibly common and pervasive form of animal cruelty: factory farming, which involves raising pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, and other animals in deplorable conditions. And, like Michael Vick, we financially support it in part because we have an addiction. More specifically, we are addicted to the taste of low-cost industrial meat. As a result, we refuse to see our financial support of large scale cruelty to animals.

In this chapter, we analyze the structural metaphor human victim is animal in three modern horror films, and argue that the  metaphor is characteristic of the horror genre. It is shown that its pervasive manifestations, in both monomodal and multimodal form, create what Musolff (2006) calls a “metaphor scenario.” In the concluding section we discuss some implications of our study for metaphor theory, genre, and animal rights.

O Direito Animal como campo jurídico inovador propõe a reflexão dos animais não humanos como possíveis sujeitos morais, titulares/beneficiários do sistema jurídico. Ao consignar que o animal não humano não poderá ser tratado de forma cruel, a Constituição Federal passaria a reconhecer o direito de o animal não humano ter respeitada sua integridade, sua liberdade, sua vida. Logo, diante dessa lógica, também existiria para o animal um mínimo existencial tutelado pelas normas constitucionais brasileiras. Dessa feita, haveria uma necessidade de reorientação não especista da teoria dos Direitos Humanos para contemplar os Direitos dos Animais. De posse dessa ordem de coisas, o presente estudo objetivou refletir sobre a construção dos marcadores morais das/os estudantes de Direito no que se refere aos Direitos dos Animais. Qual o grau de conhecimento da temática, como percebem, agem, constroem e reproduzem as representações sociais no que se refere aos animais não humanos e seus Direitos.
