The volume Consensus Building, Negotiation, and Conflict Resolution for Heritage Place Management, edited by David Myers, Stacie Nicole Smith and Gail Ostergren, represents an important step towards implementing consensus building concepts and techniques within the heritage field. The publication collects the proceedings from a workshop organised by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), based in Los Angeles, USA, in December 2009. Therefore, the case studies in the volume reflect conditions from 2009 through 2010. When considering the range of possible disagreements concerning heritage projects, for example due to competing views of heritage values and opposing interests between stakeholders, the volume is both timely and important. The benefit of the volume is that it introduces concepts from consensus building, and outlines a framework for how to implement approaches within heritage projects fraught by a lack of agreement between stakeholders.
