Archeologia Leggera

The project Lungo le tracce di Paolo Orsi was launched in 2011 on the initiative of the cultural association Centro Studio Ibleo of Ferla (Siracusa) with the aim of developing new strategies for the conservation, management and enhancement of the considerable archaeological heritage, located in the hyblean area and threatened by high seismic risk. The three archaeological and topographical campaigns (2011-2013) focused on the preliminary study and the detecting of a part of the archaeological remains, belonging to the medieval castles of Ferla, Buscemi and Cassaro and had the scientific collaboration of the Accademia di Belle Arti “Rosario Gagliardi” of Siracusa (2011) and the Università degli Studi di Enna “Kore” - Corso di Laurea in Archeologia del Mediterraneo (2013). Thanks to field surveys we collected new data about the phenomenon of the medieval encastellation in south-eastern Sicily and the degradation’s conditions of these castles.

L'articolo presenta e discute due casi di studio relativi a distretti turistici locali sviluppati a partire dalle ricerche di archeologia leggera territoriale in Italia (Toscana, Amiata, Arcidosso) e Giordania (Ma'an, Shawbak, Petra)

The paper presents and discusses two case studies of rural tourist districts  based on archaeological territorial research in Italy (Tuscany, Amiata, Arcidosso) and Jordan (Ma'an, Shawbak, Petra), in the frame of local development strategies.

The Florence University Chair of Medieval Archaeology and the Municipality of Arcidosso (Italy, Tuscany, Mount Amiata) opened in 2014 a permanent museum exhibition in the premises of Aldobrandeschi Castle at Arcidosso, a multi-period architectural-archaeological site whose main developmental phases can be dated between 10th and 15th century CE. The Castle constitutes a superb example of European and Tuscan medieval seigniorial and military architecture and is beautifully preserved; moreover it is located at the center of the Amiata and Fiora Valley area, a vast rural territory intensively investigated by means of Light Archaeology by Florence University since 2003. Museological and museographic plannings were carried out, during a period of 3 years, with a Public Archaeology perspective, in order to maximize interaction with non-planners, both during «formative» phases, as well as (after the opening) within the actual museum environment. From a theoretical perspective, Arcidosso replicates and elaborates on the museological structure of the international exhibition «From Petra to Shawbak» (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, 2009) although with relevant specifics, as the full integration of antique artefacts and contemporary works of art clearly demonstrates. Finally, a distinctive mark of the Museum of Arcidosso is constituted by interactive «unplugged» displays, thought of as a most suitable means for visitors to select the desired contents from a very structured (and rich) data-set all the while limiting maintenance costs from the part of the local owner/manager, Municipality of Arcidosso, enhancing sustainability and durability of the project.

The Mamluk dynasty (1250–1517) succeeded the Ayyubids in Egypt and Syria. From 1260, and for 260 years, construction projects and different types of buildings were sponsored by sultans, emirs, and members of the elite in Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem as well as in smaller towns and regions on the outskirts of the Mamluk sultanate. Although the existing architecture from the Mamluk period is generally well known in Egypt and Syria, this is not always the case in other countries. In present-day Jordan, which was divided administratively into two large mamlakats, there are many sumptuous examples of mamluk buildings that still have yet to be investigated with the necessary attention. The case study analysed here is the castrum/qalʿat Kerak in the late 13th and the first half of 14th century, where an exceptional example of Mamluk palatine architecture is partially preserved. According to written historical sources, this reception hall (or qāʾa) called Qā’at al-Naḥḥās can be attributed to al-Nāṣir Muḥammad ibn Qalāwūn (1310–1341), one of the most distinguished figure of the Mamluk sultanate. This paper will undertake to clarify the construction process of Mamluk royal spaces in Kerak as evidence of the Mamluk dynasty’s power and stability, using the methods of “Light Archaeology” (building stratigraphy, in particular) already used by the Italian archaeological mission (University of Florence) at Petra and Shawbak (Medieval Petra project).
