Armenian Christianity

The conference is organized by the Department of Church History and Patristic Theology of the Faculty of Theology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. The Christian Orient is a specific space of the encounter of different liturgical and theological traditions as well as languages. This mosaic is created, among others, by the Maronite Church, the Melkite Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Coptic Church and the Ethiopian Church. The platform of the encounter and the themes of the undertaken study are history, theology, liturgy, exegesis, philosophy, philology and interreligious dialogue. The important aspect which accompanies our reflection is the existential dimension of presented research and the attempt at presenting the link between history, modern times and the future of the Christian Orient. Full-length papers are invited that address the history, specific character and present situation of Christian communities of the East; problems of cultural, political and theological nature of Christian communities, the Churches in their specific historical, geographical, doctrinal and liturgical contexts; the Churches that belong to the Syrian, Alexandrian tradition as well as Armenian and Georgian Christianity, Byzantine Churches; Catholic – Orthodox controversy; the problem of Catholics belonging to Eastern rite (Europe) and contemporary political and social challenges (the Middle East); the specifics of the Eastern Churches: monastic movement (hesychasm), the cult of icons, liturgy and spirituality; Oriental studies, today and in the past. The aim of this meeting of researchers specializing in various fields is to provide a vital stimulus for the development of studies on the Christian Orient both in Poland and in other countries. The theme of the conference The Christian Orient. History, Heritage and Modern Times is very broad in order to enable the participation of not only highly specialized experts of this aspect of Christianity but also those researchers whose studies might be crucial for understanding and promoting knowledge on the diversity and significance of different traditions of the Christian Orient in the modern world.

Данная статья посвящена анализу интерпретации взглядов выдающегося представителя Антиохийской школы богословия – Феодора Мопсуэстийского (350-428) в переписке Прокла, патриарха Константинопольского (434-446) с представителями Армянской Церкви. После событий Третьего Вселенского Собора (431 г.) и осуждения работ Нестория, значительная часть его сторонников стала опираться на труды весьма уважаемого тогда на востоке Византии богослова – Феодора Мопсуэстийского, который считался учителем Нестория. Поскольку к моменту споров Феодора уже не было в живых, процесс осуждения был очень проблематичным.

This is an interview with Dr. Helen Evans, Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator for Byzantine Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The interview was contacted in 2015, a year which marked the centenary from the Armenian genocide, in view of the forthcoming exhibition dedicated to Armenian art held at the MET between September 2018 and January 2019.

St. Peter’s Armenian Church, Meadow’s Street, Fort, Mumbai is the oldest Armenian Church in Indian standing to give testimony to the presence of the Armenian Christians living in Bombay since the 18th Cen. A.D .It also acted as a contact point with another community i.e. the Syrian Christians who also settled here. The numbers of Armenians in Mumbai has dwindled to just one person and besides rare occasion the Armenian culture has totally vanished from this part of the country, The elements of the Church with its significance, rituals, language, etc of both Christian communities will be explored in this paper -The Bombay Explorer,Vol 53,ISSN:2278-117X,2014.

The Directory of Feasts of the Armenian Church, the liturgical calendar known as the Tōnac‘oyc‘, registers two feasts for saints named “Nicholas.” The first Saturday of Advent is dedicated to the commemoration “of Saints Gregory the Wonderworker [Grigori Sk‘anč‘elagorcin], Nicholas the Patriarch [Nikołayosi hayrapetin] and Bishop Myron [Miwṙonay episcoposin].”  The second commemoration falls just two weeks later, on the third Saturday of Advent, and is reserved for “Saint Nicholas the Wonderworking ‘Smyrnian’ Patriarch” [Srboyn Nikołayosi Zmiwṙnac‘woy sk‘anč‘elagorc hayrapetin].  Who are these two saints named Nicholas, if indeed they refer to different persons? And if not, why do the Armenians commemorate the same saint twice, just two weeks apart, during the season of Advent?
