Attitudes Towards Pets

Речь пойдет не о колхозно-совхозных скотомогильниках – этих варварских свалках гнилой плоти, а именно о специально оборудованных погребениях «домашних питомцев» – кошек, собак, птичек, хомяков, декоративных мышек и аквариумных рыбок. Или же – тех животных, которых всё же при некоторых обстоятельствах люди хотят похоронить пристойно – скажем так, по-человечески. И вообще – о самих способах захоронений в таких ситуациях. В наше время, в недавнем прошлом и в настоящем, причем преимущественно в городской среде.
Многие аспекты этой темы нуждаются в дальнейшем основательном изучении. Какова, например, история такого рода кладбищ, каковы типы надгробий и эпитафий, каковы особенности погребений, отличающие захоронения животных от могил людей и т. п.? Требуют уточнения предварительные выводы о своеобразной архаичности погребальных обычаев, о сочетании в них обряда и игры, о роли детей во всех этих действиях. Однако уже сейчас ясно, что такое изучение позволит кое-что прояснить в тех сферах мировосприятия современных людей, которые связаны с самыми сущностными человеческими характеристиками – с религиозностью, моралью, структурой мышления, обрядовостью.

Pets are seen as family members who provide emotional support, companionship, and protection.  They satisfy interpersonal needs of inclusion, control, affection, and respect.  They provide rewards, which often outweigh the costs of having them as family members.    Pet therapy is discussed.  The intriguing intent-impact model of nonverbal communication is discussed in terms of pet signals to their family. Even divorced couples have argued over co-custody rights about their pets.  Many families feel their unconditional love.  Recall the old classic maxim pertaining to dogs, “Peoples' best friend.”  Yet, animals as family members can be diverse through various species.  If you have a pet as a family member or a companion and do not have an animal phobia, enjoy their stability, sharing of emotions, protection, and entertainment value.  Continue to communicate verbally and nonverbally through emotional expressions, gesturing, pointing, and voice tonality.  Finally, if you have a pet, will he or she be anxiously waiting for you when you arrive home?

Домашние животные обитают бок о бок с человеком уже много тысячелетий. И ещё совсем недавно (по историческим меркам) люди вели себя по отношению и к диким, и к домашним животным как суровые властители их жизней и судеб. Они оценивали животных преимущественно с утилитарно-прагматической точки зрения – с позиции собственных нужд. Бескорыстная любовь к животным, конечно же, встречалась всегда, но прежде – явно реже, чем в наши дни. Судя по всему, развитие городской цивилизации в XX веке постепенно привело к нынешнему своего рода очеловечиванию некоторых видов животных – конечно же, самых смышлёных, покладистых, мягких да пушистых; конечно же, в наиболее развитых и благополучных странах. Но и такое, привычное ныне отношение многих миллионов людей к своим домашним любимцам – трогательное, бескорыстное, даже жертвенное – контрастирует с тем, что было типичным ещё совсем недавно.

В традиционном обществе домашние животные вписывались в мир людей в соответствии со своими природными функциями. Собака охраняла дом, кошка ловила мышей, лошадь перевозила грузы да землю пахала, корова давала молоко и мясо. Отношение к ним было, можно сказать, функциональным. Это сугубый прагматизм: если о пропитании коровы и лошади заботились всерьёз, то кошки и собаки жили в значительной мере на самопрокорме. Говорить о какой-либо особой душевной симпатии и привязанности к домашним животным со стороны, по крайней мере, взрослых крестьян не приходится. А это контрастирует с нынешним, куда более гуманным и непрагматичным отношением, когда у современного горожанина домашним питомцем может стать почти любое существо – от кошки до мадагаскарского таракана, и едва ли от этого существа будут всерьёз требовать выполнения неких хозяйственных обязанностей.

Igor Purlantov says that the number of households that have pets is shrinking.  At the end of 2013, American households had 7.6 million fewer cats and 2 million fewer dogs than in 2006 according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to explore American’s beliefs about animal afterlife based on key demographic factors such as sex, race/ethnicity, age, geographic region, religion/faith, and pet ownership. We attained a large and diverse sample of respondents (n = 800) using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, and attempted to make the data fairly representative of the United States population by applying post-stratification weights based on auxiliary statistics obtained from US Census data. Results of the study suggest that many people perceive animal lives as similarly sacred as human lives. Evidence also suggests that one’s membership in a particular demographic category may have considerable bearing on views about animal afterlife. The authors recommend veterinarians remain cognizant that some people extend their own views on issues such as spirituality to their pets and those beliefs and values can impact veterinary care and decision-making.

Just like parents who have children, these animals are in your charge. They are your responsibility and they depend upon you. You should know that they need most of the same things that you needed when you were a baby, toddler and child. And please, by all means, begin to teach toddlers & children to love, respect, and care about animals as early as possible. And continue doing so, so that the message stays with them throughout their lives.

Why do we live with pets? Is there something more to our relationship with them than simply companionship? What is it we look for in our pets and what does this say about us as human beings? For what is a pet if it isn’t a fully-fledged member of the human family? This book proposes that by crossing over these boundaries pets help construct who it is we think we are. Drawing on the works of modern writers, such as J. M. Coetzee, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and Jacques Derrida, Fudge shows how pets have been used to think with and to undermine our easy conceptions of human, animal and home. Indeed, Pets shows our obsession with domestic animals reveals many of the paradoxes, contradictions and ambiguities of life. Living with pets provides thought-provoking perspectives on our notions of possession and mastery, mutuality and cohabitation, love and dominance.

We might think of pets as simply happy, loved additions to human homes but as this captivating book reveals perhaps it is the pets that make the home and without pets perhaps we might not be the humans we think we are. For anyone who has ever wondered, like Montaigne, what their cat is thinking, it will be illuminating reading.
