In view of recent developments in human-animal relations, vets and ethicists face a new problem: On the one hand, animals such as mammals and birds are used extensively and are in danger to be reduced to mere production units e. g. in the agricultural production, measuring devices in laboratories, sports equipment etc. On the other hand, biologically similar animals are perceived as family members or partners and are almost treated like humans. The article summarizes the results of a workshop that dealt with reductionism and anthropomorphism in human-animal relations. Vets and ethicists tackled the question how the unequal treatment of biologically similar animals can be better understood and whether it can be ethically justified. In the first section, the problem of inconsistency in human-animals relations is briefly sketched. The aim of this prospective and controlled longitudinal study was to determine the effects of everyday dog-walking on physical capacity in elderly patients during the first year after myocardial infarction. Our results suggest that dogs may help to maintain continuous physical activity in elderly cardiovascular patients promoting their physical capacity. Although the literature on human-animal interactions has documented the physical, psychological, and social benefits resulting from positive relationships with dogs, cats, and other kinds of companion animals, many attachment instruments include items that pertain to specific kinds of interactions with dogs. For this reason, dog owners attain higher scores on these measures than owners of cats and other types of pets. This study introduces a scale for measuring attachment in terms of the perceived comfort received from a pet. A sample of 87 cat owners and 58 dog owners completed the Comfort from Companion Animals Scale. The results showed that, when two items pertaining to dogs were included, dog owners showed a significantly higher degree of attachment. When only the 11 items pertaining to the emotional nature of the relationship were included, however, there were no differences in the scores of the two groups. The results indicate the importance of clarifying both the commonalities and differences of human interactions with various companion animal species.

apresentadas indicam que há hoje uma configuração social de afeto que
coloca aos indivíduos humanos como amar seus animais, numa espécie
de modelo a ser seguido sobre cuidados e consumos, profundamente
influenciado pelos interesses de mercado pet (sobretudo das indústrias
farmacêuticas e alimentícias) e pela vigilância biopolítica do Estado.
Enquanto isso, aos indivíduos animais, agora inseridos num – sempre
controverso – processo de antropomorfização, cabe uma existência cada vez mais vigiada, controlada e civilizada. Essas reflexões são
provenientes de uma retomada da literatura da sociologia em específico e das ciências humanas em geral, bem como de pesquisa de campo em
hospital veterinário e crematório de animais, entrevistas, grupo focal,
análise imagética-discursiva de material publicitário e análise
documental, caracterizando-se como um estudo predominantemente
qualitativo.
