PROF. Irfan Ahmad is a political anthropologist with a broad range of theoretical and ethnographic interests in research, teaching, writing, and speaking. Currently a professor of Anthropology-Sociology, Ibn Haldun University, Istanbul, he was previously a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen, Germany. Before that, he worked as an associate professor of political anthropology at Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, and a senior lecturer in politics at Monash University, also in Melbourne, where he taught for five years (2009–13). Before moving to Australia, he taught at Utrecht University, Netherlands, and the University of Amsterdam. In this email interview, he speaks of Muslim backwardness, radicalisation, and similar shibboleths in vogue today and why he believes “the Hindu question” must be addressed before “the Muslim question” can be solved.

The RSS-BJP government of India led by a seasoned RSS whole-timer, Narendra Modi has miserably failed in providing basic amenities, employment, education, security and peace to 138 crores of Indians (out of which approximately 80% are Hindus ) but on last August 5, he had a joyous news to share with the people of the country. While laying the foundation of Ram Temple at Ayodhya on August 5, 2020, with the get-up of a prosperous Hindu sage, Prime Minister declared that wait of Hindus of the world for centuries was over as Lord Ram’s birthplace was finally liberated from numerous attempts to destroy it. According to him India with his laying down the foundation of the Temple was  writing a “glorious chapter” and declared that "Today, the Ram Janmabhoomi [birth-place] has become free from the centuries-old chain of destruction and resurrection".

GOSWAMI TULSIDAS PUT IN BAD LIGHT
As generally happens with our PM, he resorted to lies regarding the destruction of Ram birth-place temple for building Babri Mosque too. According to his narrative, borrowed from the RSS shakhas, Ayodhya represented a continuous war between Hindus and Muslims over the Ram Temple for almost last five centuries.
While boasting of victory over the adversary (Muslims) he did not bother to look at the epic work of poetry in Avadhi language penned by Goswami Tulsidas, namely, RAMCHARITMANAS. This was the work which mesmerized India with the story of Lord Ram and the latter became house-hold deity of every Hindu home.  He penned his above mentioned work during 1575-76. According to the Hindutva version Ram birth-place temple was destroyed during 1538-1539. Thus RAMCHARITMANAS written almost 37 years after the so called destruction of Ram birth-place temple should have mentioned this destruction. But it did not.
Are Hindutva zealots trying to say that the greatest story-teller and worshipper of Ram and his Court (Darbar), Tulsidas did not speak truth in his historic work? Is not it an attempt to question the credibility of Goswami Tulsidas? Are the Hindutva zealots trying to say that Goswami Tulsidas kept mum on the issue of the destruction of a temple at Ram's birth-place due to some ulterior motives?

Being around fifteen per cent of the total population of India, Indian Muslims constitute a significant minority that cannot be ignored by the political parties in India. Since partition, the Muslims were considered traditional Indian National Congress (INC) constituency, but the failure of the INC to stop the demolition of Babri mosque and Gujarat massacre pushed Muslims to look for other options. In this study, the impact of communal violence on the voting behaviour of Indian Muslims is studied with the help of a comparative study of Muslim voting patterns in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Kerala. This paper argues that the electoral performance of Muslims and their supported party or coalition has a direct bearing on the communal violence against them. By conducting the comparative study of the electoral behaviour of Muslim voters in these three states, it is observed that the most important factor in this performance is the choices they get in a particular state. The political clout and bargaining position of Muslim voters is much better in a coalition system than in a two-party contest and they can play their cards more successfully if they have their own political party as they have in Kerala. This paper also looks at the role of police in communal violence and its relationship with electoral politics.

This dissertation challenges the Liberhan Ayodhya Commission Report by highlighting that neither the BJP, as an institution, nor its leadership, key individuals, maintained a periphery role in the destruction of the Babri Masjid. It substantiates that their responsibility lay not only in communalising the Ayodhya movement but, also in leveraging the movement as a platform for communalising Indian society; two enduring factors that this dissertation finds, are integral ingredients in the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

The so-called radicality of this Conference did nothing but further contribute to the erasure of Indian Muslims and Indian brand of anti-Muslimness. It carried out Hindutva’s goal. Genocide of Muslims is an aesthetic project for Hindutva. Genocide of Muslims is an aesthetic project for this seemingly anti-casteist but clearly and always anti-Muslim left.

बाबरी मस्जिद विध्वंस की 27वीं बरसी
हिन्दुत्वादी  जो 1992 में नहीं कर पाए,  सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कर दिया
इस दुखद सच को झुटलाना मुश्किल है कि हमारा देश जिस को दुनिया का सब से बड़ा लोकतंत्र माना जाता है वहां दो तरह की न्यायक पद्धतियां काम करती हैं। एक है जब बहुमत धर्म और ऊंची जातियों से जुड़े लोग/संगठन अल्पसंखयकों और दलितों के खिलाफ हिंसा करते हैं तो  हिंसा करने वाले मुजरिमों को सज़ा मिलना तो दूर की बात है उनकी पहचान भी नहीं हो पाती है।  यह चाहे बांग्ला भाषी मुसलमानों का नेल्ली जनसंहार (1983), सिख जनसंहार (1984०), बाबरी मस्जिद के विध्वंस (से पहले और बाद में 1992-93 के दौरान मुसलमान विरोधी हिंसा), गुजरात जनसंहार (2002), कंधमाल ईसाई जनसंहार (2007) या दलितों के अनगिनित जनसंहारों में से कुछ जैसे कि बथानी टोला (1996),लक्ष्मणपुर बाथे (1997), मिर्चपुर (2010) खैरलांजी (2006) किलवेलमानी (1968) किलविलमणि हों। क़ातिलों, बलात्कारियों और लुटेरों की पहचान नहीं हो पाती है और राज्य आयोग पर आयोग बिठाकर अल्पसंखयक और दलित विरोधी जनसंहारों को रफ़ा-दफ़ा करने के काम में ही जुटा रहता है। 
लेकिन अगर अल्पसंखयकों या दलितों दुवारा 'हिंसा' की गयी हो तो तुरंत फांसी और उम्रक़ैद दे कर 'इंसाफ़' किया जाता है।
यही खेल बाबरी मस्जिद के विध्वंस वाले मामले में खेला जाता रहा और हद तो तब होगई जब भारत की सर्वोच्च अदालत ने 9 नवम्बर 2019 को सर्वसम्मत फैसले से मस्जिद की जगह उन संगठनों/लोगों को देदी जिन्हों ने मस्जिद को 6 दिसंबर 1992 के दिन संसद, सुप्रीम कोर्ट, प्रधान मंत्री को दिए गए आश्वासनों के बावजूद ढा दिया था। सच लेकिन इन्तेहाई दुखद बात है की जिस उद्देश्य को हिन्दुत्वादी आतंकवादी 6 दिसम्बर 1992 के दिन नहीं पर्पट कर पाए थे उसे हमारी अदालत ने प्राप्त करा दिया! 
दिसंबर 6, 1992 के दिन अयोध्या में मस्जिद और मुसलमानों के साथ किया हुवा था इस को जानना ज़रूरी है। देश की प्रजांतरिक-धर्मनिरपेक्ष वयवस्था के साथ हिन्दुत्वादी संगठनों ने जो शर्मनाक खेल खेला था उस की एक रपट पेश है जो नीलिमा शर्मा और शम्सुल इस्लाम ने बाबरी विध्वंस के एक महीने बाद वहां जाकर तैयार की थी।
यह रपट जनवरी 31, 1993 को दैनिक जनसत्ता में छपी थी।

The accounts of European adventurers, possessing immense academic value, provide a
deep political understanding of northern India that has historically been the subject of
debate and contestation. Perceptions of two such noteworthy adventurers are understudied due to their untranslated French accounts. This article has tried to fill this lacuna by critically examining the memoirs of these adventurers—Comte De Modave’s
Voyage en Inde du Comte de Modave, 1773-1776 and Joseph Tieffenthaler’s La Géographie de l’Indoustan—which capture their views on a transition period of eighteenth-century India from Mughal rule towards British colonialism. Further, the article
explores a brief authentic biography of these adventurers, followed by observations and
methods used to justify their convictions. Their memoirs contain recommendations
over the ownership of land to substantiate British colonial rule in India, which are corroborated and critically analyzed by other contemporary primary and secondary literature. Their approach projected that Aurangzeb’s vision was politically motivated, further accentuating their argument by citing his discriminatory religious acts as intolerant. This article outlines their interpretation of the Babri Masjid controversy and the
Hindutva ideology, which differs from archaeological and documentary evidence.

अगस्त 5, 2020: भारतीय गणतंत्र का ‘वध’
संप्रभु-लोकतांत्रिक भारतीय गणतंत्र 26 जनवरी, 1950 को एक ऐतिहासिक संविधान के साथ अस्तित्व में आया, जिसकी प्रस्तावना में दृढ़ प्रतिबद्धता के साथ यह घोषणा की गई थी कि “न्याय, सामाजिक, आर्थिक और राजनीतिक, विचार, अभिव्यक्ति, विश्वास, धर्म और उपासना की स्वतंत्रता, प्रतिष्ठा और अवसर की समता प्राप्त करने के लिए तथा, उन सबमें व्यक्ति की गरिमा और राष्ट्र की एकता और अखण्डता सुनिश्चित करनेवाले बंधुत्व को बढ़ाने।।।" के लिए.गणतंत्र काम करेगा। 
इस गणतंत्र की 5 अगस्त, 2020 को अयोध्या में बड़े धूमधाम के साथ सार्वजनिक रूप से बलि दी जा रही है । यह मुद्दा उस जगह पर एक भव्य राम मंदिर [मंदिर] के निर्माण का नहीं है जहाँ कभी बाबरी मस्जिद खड़ी थी। मंदिर के निर्माण की वैधता भारत के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के ‘प्रबंधन सहयोग’से सुनिश्चत की गयी थी। निष्पक्षता, क़ानून और सामान्य-बुद्धि के सभी मानदंडों को धता बताते हुए, सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने यह स्वीकार करने के बावजूद मंदिर के निर्माण को मंज़ूरी दे दी कि अतीत में बाबरी मस्जिद बनाने के लिए किसी भी मंदिर को नष्ट नहीं किया गया था, 22-23 दिसंबर 1949 की रात को मस्जिद में राम लल्ला की मूर्तियों को रखना अवैध था, और 6 दिसंबर 1992 को हिंदुत्ववादी भीड़ द्वारा मस्जिद को नष्ट करना एक आपराधिक कृत्य था। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि सर्वोच्च अदालत को इन सब जानकारियों के बावजूद बाबरी मस्जिद के स्थान पर मंदिर बनाने को न्यायिक मंज़ूरी दे दी गयी।  दिसंबर 1992 को हिंदुत्व की उन्मादी और हिंसक भीड़ जो कुछ हासिल नहीं कर सकी थी, न्यायपालिका के माध्यम से उसे प्राप्त कर लिया गया।

The paper looks at Babri Masjid demolition as an event that serves as an actualisation of a historical conflict between the Western Episteme and knowledge traditions outside it. The paper focuses specifically on two groups: the ‘Hindu nationalists’ and the ‘Secularist Faction’ and traces the origins of their specific conceptions of History. The paper shows how one group, in its attempts to control the meaning of event, ends up constantly foregrounding man or his problems while the other group, primarily seeks to foreground sacred immanent entity which is beyond rational critique. What binds these two groups, occupying different epistemic positions, however, is a common reverence for the western episteme. The paper treats the intellectual experiance of this epistemic clash as crucial for an understanding of the Babri Masjid event and also the events afterwords. The paper finally argues that the attempts at rewriting history and reconfiguring the western episteme by the Hindu nationalists render precarious the position of Man as the centre of knowledge, a position which, as Michel Foucault predicted, was never permanent.

OPEN LETTER TO THE HONOURABLE CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA RANJAN GOGOI
MEDIATION ORDER IN AYODHYA CASE IS BLUDGEONING OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTIONAL POLITY WHICH THE SUPREME COURT IS DUTY-BOUND TO SAFEGUARD
Honourable Chief Justice of India,
You know more than anyone else in the world that Indian constitutional polity treats all citizens equally irrespective of their race, creed, religion, language, culture and gender. But the observation of the Bench (consisting Justices S.A. Bobde, D.Y. Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S. Abdul Nazeer) headed by you in the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title case that the issue is primarily not about the disputed 2.77 acres of Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya, but about “religious sentiments” and the was looking at a “possibility of healing relationships” .  The religions of the parties were not named but it was clear that Supreme Court Bench meant to heal relationship between Hindus and Muslims. Such a stand presents serious dangers to the principles of Rule of Law or Due Process of Law on which Indian Constitution is based.

جے پی کی موجودہ حکومت138 کروڑ ہندوستانیوں (جن میں سے 80 فیصد ہندو ہیں) کو روزگار ، تعلیم ، تحفظ اور امن وسکون کی فراہمی میں بری طرح سے ناکام ہوچکی ہے، لیکن اہل وطن کے دل بہلانے کے لیے 5  اگست  (2020) کو اس کے پاس ایک اچھی خبر تھی۔ قرون وسطیٰ کےکسی بادشاہ کے لباس میں ملبوس، ایک ہندو رِشی نظرآنے کی تمنا لیے ، زعفرانی لبادہ لپیٹےوزیر اعظم نے، ایودھیا میں رام مندر کا سنگ بنیاد رکھتے ہوئے یہ اعلان کیا کہ دنیا بھر کے ہندوؤں کی دیرینہ خواہش پوری ہوگئی،  بھگوان رام کی جائے پیدائش جسے تباہ کرنے کے لیے سیکڑوں برسوں سے کوششیں کی جارہی تھیں، آخرکار وہ آزاد ہوگئی۔بقول ان کےمندر کی بنیادمیں جس وقت سنگ ِبنیاد رکھا جارہا تھا، ہندوستان ایک ’’سنہرا باب‘‘ رقم کر رہا تھا۔ یہ سمجھنا ذرابھی مشکل نہیں تھا کہ بھارت سے مراد خود وہ تھے۔ انہوں نے اعلان کیا کہ ’’آج رام جنم بھومی صدیوں سے چلے آرہے انہدام اور احیاء کے سلسلے سے آزاد ہوگئی۔‘‘

گوسوامی تلسی داس پر سوالیہ نشان
    ہمارے وزیر اعظم نریندر مودی اکثر جھوٹ بولتے پائے جاتے ہیں۔بابری مسجد کی تعمیر کے لئے رام کی جائے پیدائش کے انہدام سے متعلق بھی انھوں نے جھوٹ کا سہارا لیا۔ انہوں نے اس کے بارے میں جو کہا وہ آر ایس ایس کی شاکھاؤں میں وضع کردہ ’حقائق‘ ہیں جن کا عصری ’ہندو‘ دستاویزات اور ماخذ میں بھی کوئی ذکر نہیں ہے۔ ان کے مطابق ، ایودھیا میں رام مندر کو لے کرہندوؤں اور مسلمانوں کے مابین تقریبا پانچ صدیوں سےمسلسل جنگ چلی آرہی تھی۔
مخالفین (مسلمانوں) پر فتح کی شیخی بگھارتے وقت،مودی نے اودھی زبان میں تصنیف کردہ گوسوامی تلسی داس کے رزمیہ مہاکاویہ ’شری رام چرِت مانَس‘ کو مکمل طور پر نظر انداز کردیا۔ یہ وہی مہاکاویہ ہے، جس نے بھگوان رام کی کہانی کو مقبول کرکے ہر ہندوکے، خاص طور پر شمالی ہندوستان کے، من مندر میں جاگزیں کردیا ہے۔ گوسوامی تلسی داس نے اس مہاکاویہ کو 1575–76 میں تصنیف کیا تھا۔ ہندتووادیوں کے دعوے کے مطابق، رام کی جائے پیدائش کا مندر 1538-1539 کے دوران تباہ کردیا گیا تھا۔ تب، اس مندرکے مبینہ انہدام کے تقریباً 37 سال کے بعدتحریر کردہ ’شری رام چرِت مانَس‘ میں اس انہدام کا ذکر ہونا چاہیے تھا، لیکن ’شری رام چرِت مانَس‘ میں ایسا کوئی ذکر نہیں ہے۔
یہ سب کرکےکیا ہندتو ٹھیکیدار جن کی قیادت مودی کررہے ہیں، یہ ظاہر کرنے کی کوشش کر رہے ہیں کہ رام اور ان کے ’دربار‘ کے سب سے بڑے راوی اور عقیدت مند، تلسی داس نے اپنے تاریخی کام میں جان بوجھ کر حقیقت نہیں بتائی؟ کیا یہ گوسوامی تلسی داس کی معتبریت پر سوال اٹھانے کی کوشش نہیں ہے؟ کیا ہندتو کے ٹھیکیدار یہ کہنے کی کوشش کر رہے ہیں کہ گوسوامی تلسی داس رام کی جائے پیدائش پر انہدامِ مندر کے موضوع پر کسی خفیہ مقصد سے خاموش رہ گئے؟
یہاں یہ جاننا مناسب ہوگا کہ گوسوامی تلسی داس کےتین قریبی افراد نے اپنی سوانح عمری تحریر کی ہیں، لیکن ان میں بھی رام کی جائے پیدائش پر کسی مسجد کی تعمیر کا ذکر نہیں ہے۔
سپریم کورٹ کے فیصلے کی توہین
رام جنم بھومی’’انہدام اور احیاء کے صدیوں پرانے سلسلے سے آزادہوئی‘‘،یہ دعویٰ کرکے وزیر اعظم ایودھیا سے متعلق 9 نومبر 2019 کو سپریم کورٹ کی جانب سے کئے گئے فیصلے کی علی الاعلان دھجیاں اڑا رہے تھے۔  اپنےاس فیصلے میں، عدالت نے کہا ہے کہ بابری مسجد کسی مندر کو مسمار کرکے نہیں بنائی گئی تھی۔ 22/23 دسمبر 1949 کی آدھی رات کو رام للا کا مجسمہ رکھنا غیرقانونی تھا اور 6 دسمبر 1992 کو ایودھیا میں بابری مسجد کا انہدام ’’قانون کی حکمرانی کی سنگین خلاف ورزی‘‘ تھا۔ اسی فیصلے نے اس حقیقت کی بھی نشاندہی کی ہے کہ ’’مسلمانوں کوغیر منصفانہ طریقے سے ایک مسجد سے محروم کیا گیا ہے، جو 450 سال پہلےباقاعدہ تعمیر کی گئی تھی‘‘۔ درحقیقت، ایودھیا میں وزیر اعظم کی تقریر کے لئے، ان کے خلاف توہین عدالت کا مقدمہ چل سکتا ہے۔

ہم نے دیکھا کہ کس طرح  ایک بے بنیاد اور مفروضہ کہانی کی بنا پربابری مسجد کی جگہ ایک عظیم الشان رام مندر تعمیر کیا جارہا ہے۔ نریندر مودی کی آر ایس ایس-بی جے پی حکومت کا دعوی ہے کہ وہ ماضی کی غلطیوں کو دور کرنے کے لئے پرعزم ہے۔ ہمیں یہ نہیں بھولنا چاہئے کہ اس سے متعلق بہت سے سنجیدہ پہلو ہیں جن کو نظرانداز نہیں کیا جاسکتا۔ اس کا سب سے بڑا مسئلہ یہ ہے کہ ہندوستانی تہذیب ، جسے خود آر ایس ایس کم از کم 5000 سال قدیم بتاتا ہے، اس میں سے صرف 700-800 سال کی مدت [جب ہندوستان پر حکومت کرنے / حملہ کرنے والے مسلم نام  والے رہے] کو غلطیوں کو درست کرنے کے لئے منتخب کیا گیا ہے۔ باقی 4200-4300 سالوں کی طرح جب مسلمان ہندوستان نہیں پہنچے تھے، سب ٹھیک تھا۔ آئیے، ہم ملک کی تاریخ میں ہونے والی ناانصافیوں سے متعلق خود’ہندو‘ماخذ کیا بتاتے ہیں، اس کا جائزہ لیتے ہیں۔
اس تناظر میں، یہ جاننا ضروری ہے کہ آر ایس ایس / ہندتو کے سب سے اہم مفکر اور آر ایس ایس کے دوسرے سربراہ، ایم ایس گولولکر نے محمود غزنوی کے ذریعہ 1025-26 میں سومناتھ مندر کی تباہی کے بارے میں کیا لکھا تھا:
’’ایک ہزار سال پہلے، ہمارے لوگوں نےہم پر حملہ کرنے  کے لیے غیر ملکیوں کو دعوت دی۔ آج بھی ایسا ہی خطرہ ہمارے اوپرمنڈلا رہا ہے۔ کس طرح سومناتھ کے عظیم الشان مندر کی بے حرمتی کی گئی  اور مسمار کیا گیا، یہ تو تاریخ کی بات ہوچکی ہے۔ محمودغازی(غزنوی) نے سومناتھ کی دولت اور شان و شوکت کے بارے میں سنا تھا۔ اس نے خیبر دَرّے کو عبور کیا اور سومناتھ کی دولت لوٹنے کے لئے ہندوستان میں قدم رکھا۔ اسے صحرا کا بھاری جنگل عبور کرنا پڑا۔ ایک وقت ایسا بھی تھا جب اس کے پاس اپنی فوج اور اپنے آپ کے لئے بھی غذا اور پانی نہیں تھا۔ اسے اس کے مقدر پر چھوڑ دیا گیا ہوتا تو وہ ختم ہو گیا ہوتا اور راجستھان کی گرم ریت  نے اس کی ہڈیوں کو جلاکر راکھ کردیا ہوتا۔لیکن نہیں، محمود غزنی (غزنوی) نے مقامی سرداروں کو یہ باور کرایا کہ سوراشٹر کے حکمراں اس کے خلاف توسیع پسندانہ عزئم رکھتے ہیں، انھوں نے اپنی حماقت اور تنگ دلی کی وجہ سے اس پر یقین کر لیا اور وہ اس کے ساتھ ہولیے۔ جب محمودغازی(غزنوی) نے مہان مندر پر حملہ کیا تو وہ ہندو تھے ، ہمارے لہوکے لہو، ہماری ہڈیاں اور گوشت، ہماری روح کی روح جو اس کی فوج کے ہراول تھے۔ سومناتھ کو ہندوؤں کےفعال تعاون سے ناپاک کیا گیا۔ یہ تاریخ کے حقائق ہیں۔‘‘

ہندتو ٹولی کے ایک اور بہت ہی پیارے بنکم چندر چٹرجی [’آنندمھو‘ اور ’وندے ماترم‘ کے مصنف]ہیں جو اسی حقیقت کی تصدیق کرتے ہیں۔ ان کے مطابق،  جگناتھ مندر کا ایک جزو لاینفک’رتھ یاترا‘ اصل میں بدھ مت کی ایک رسم تھی جو بدھ مت کے مندر کے ہندوکَرن کے بعد جاری رکھی گئی۔ بنکم چندر چٹرجی نے لکھا :
’’جنرل کننگھم(Cunningham) نے’ بھلسا ٹاپس‘‘ نامی اپنے مشہور کتاب میں رتھ اتسو (جگناتھ مندر سے متعلق) کی ابتدا کی جوتفصیل بیان کی ہے، اس کے تناظر میں مجھے ایک اور انتہائی مستند کہانی معلوم ہے۔ اس میں وہ بدھ مذہب کے اسی طرح کے جشن کے بارے میں بتاتے ہیں، جس میں بدھ مت کی تین علامتوں، بدھ ، دھرمّا اور سنگھ کی نمائندگی ایک ہی شکل میں ایک گاڑی میں کی گئی تھی، اور میں سمجھتا ہوں کہ وقت بھی وہی ہے جب رتھ (یاترا) نکلتا ہے۔ اس وضاحت کے حق میں میرے پاس ایک حقیقت ہے کہ جگناتھ، بلرام اور سبھدرا ، جن کی جھانکی اب رتھ میں دکھائی جاتی ہے ، بدھ ، دھرمّا اور سنگھ ہی کی تقریباً نقل ہیں۔ ‘‘

دراصل، یہ صرف پوری مندر ہی نہیں ہے جس کا ہندوکرَن کیا گیا۔ آریہ سماج کے بانی سوامی دیانند سرسوتی نے’ستیارتھ پرکاش‘ میں شنکراچاریہ کی تعریف کرتے ہوئے کہا:
’’دس سال تک انھوں (شنکراچاریہ) نے ملک کا دورہ کیا، جین مت کی تردید کی اور ویدک دھرم کو پھیلایا۔ زمین سے جو بھی ٹوٹی ہوئی مورتیاں کھودکر نکالی جاتی ہیں، وہ شنکر کے زمانے میں توڑی گئی تھیں اور کھدائی کے دوران جہاں سالم مورتیاں یہاں وہاں نکلتی ہیں، توڑے  جانے کے خوف سے جینیوں (جنھوں نے جین مت چھوڑ دیا تھا) ہی نے زمین میں دفن کر دی تھیں۔ ‘‘

The sacred values of a community are critical in understanding cultural conflict. When an attempt is made to trade a sacred value with a secular good, it evokes feelings of anger (taboo-tradeoff) but less so when that sacred value is traded off with another sacred value (tragic).  Previous work has shown that participants who expressed sacred values for an issue were more resistant to taboo than tragic peace deals. Our objective in the present study was to extend these findings to conflicts between Hindus and Muslims over Kashmir and the Babri Mosque, the former more salient to Muslim identity and the latter more salient to Hindu identity. While replicating the previous interaction between sacred values and tradeoff type, we also found a moderating role of how salient an issue was for group identity. Only the participants for whom the issue was salient showed the previous correlates of sacred values.

आरएसएस के प्रचारक, धुर-संघी नरेन्द्र मोदी के निजी नेतृत्व में चल रही आरएसएस-भाजपा की मौजूदा सरकार 138 करोड़ भारतीयों (जिनमें से लगभग 80 प्रतिशत हिंदू हैं) को रोजगार, शिक्षा, सुरक्षा और शांति देने में तो बुरी तरह से नाकामयाब है, लेकिन देशवासियों का मन बहलाने के लिए 5 (2020) अगस्त को उसके पास एक शुभ समाचार था। किसी मध्यकालीन राजा की वेशभूषा में, एक हिन्दू ऋषी दिखने की कामना लिए, केसरिया लबादा लपेटे प्रधानमंत्री ने अयोध्या में राम मंदिर की आधारशिला रखते हुए ऐलान किया कि दुनिया भर के हिंदुओं की चिरप्रतिक्षित अभिलाषा आखिरकार पूरी हुई, भगवान राम की जन्मभूमि जिसे नष्ट करने के लिए सैकड़ों साल से कोशशें की जा रही थीं, आखिरकार वह मुक्त हो गयी। बकौल उनके मंदिर की नींव में जिस क्षण आधारशिला रखी जा रही थी, भारत  एक "सुनहरा अध्याय" लिख रहा था। यह समझना जारी भी मुश्किल नहीं था की भारत से मतलब ख़ुद वे थे।  उन्होंने ऐलान किया कि "आज, राम जन्मभूमि सदियों से चले आ रहे विध्वंस और पुनरुत्थान के चक्र से मुक्त हो गई।"

गोस्वामी तुलसीदास पर प्रश्नचिन्ह
हमारे प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी अक्सर झूठ बोलते पाये जाते हैं। बाबरी मस्जिद के निर्माण के लिए राम जन्म-स्थान मंदिर के विध्वंस को लेकर भी उन्होंने झूठ का सहारा लिया। उन्होंने इस बारे में जो कहा वह आरएसएस की शाखाओं में घढ़े 'सच' हैं जिनका इतिहास के समकालीन 'हिन्दू' दस्तावेज़ों और स्त्रोतों में भी वर्णन नहीं है। उन के अनुसार, अयोध्या ने राम मंदिर को लेकर हिंदू और मुसलमानों के बीच लगभग पांच शताब्दियों तक लगातार युद्ध चला आ रहा था।
विरोधियों (मुसलमानों) पर जीत की शेखी बघारते समय, मोदी ने अवधी भाषा में रचित, गोस्वामी तुलसीदास के महाकाव्य 'श्रीरामचरितमानस' को पूरी तरह दरकिनार कर दिया । यह वही महाकाव्य है, जिसने भगवान राम की कहानी को लोकप्रिय करके हर हिंदू के मन-मंदिर में प्रतिष्ठित किया है, विशेषकर उत्तरी भारत में । गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने 1575-76 में इस महाकाव्य की रचना की थी। हिंदुत्ववादियों के दावे के अनुसार राम जन्म-स्थान मंदिर 1538-1539 के दौरान नष्ट किया गया था। तब, राम जन्मस्थान मंदिर के कथित विध्वंस के लगभग 37 साल बाद लिखे गए 'श्रीरामचरितमानस' में इस विध्वंस का उल्लेख होना चाहिए था। लेकिन 'श्रीरामचरितमानस' में ऐसा कोई जिक्र नहीं है।
यह सब करके क्या हिंदुत्व के ठेकेदार जिन की अगवाही मोदी कर रहे हैं यह जतलाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि राम और उनके 'दरबार' के सबसे बड़े कथाकार और भक्त तुलसीदास ने अपनी इस ऐतिहासिक रचना में जानबूझ कर सत्य नहीं बताया ? क्या यह गोस्वामी तुलसीदास की विश्वसनीयता पर सवाल उठाने की कोशिश नहीं है? क्या हिंदुत्व के ठेकेदार यह कहने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि गोस्वामी तुलसीदास राम के जन्म-स्थान पर मंदिर के विध्वंस के विषय पर किसी प्रच्छन्न उद्देश्य से मौन रह गये?
यहाँ यह जानना भी मुनासिब होगा की गोस्वामी तुलसीदास के 3 क़रीबी लोगों ने उनकी जीवनियां लिखीं हैँ लेकिन उनमें भी राम जनम-स्थान पर किसी मस्जिद के बनाए जाने का ज़िक्र नहीं है।

THE 'VADH'/ANNIHILATION OF THE INDIAN REPUBLIC

This Republic is slated for public execution on August 5, 2020, with great pomp and show at Ayodhya. The issue is not building of a peerless Ram Temple [Temple] at the place where once Babri Mosque [Mosque] stood. The legitimacy for the construction of the Temple was 'managed' courtesy the highest court of justice of India. Betraying all norms of fair-play, rule of law and common sense, the Supreme Court approved construction of the Temple despite admitting also that no Temple was destroyed to build the Babri mosque in the past, it was illegal to place the Ram idols in the Mosque on the night of 22-23 December 1949 and destruction of the Mosque by the Hindutva mob on December 6, 1992, was a criminal act. There is no doubt that Temple has the judicial sanction despite the criticism that what Hindutva zealots could not achieve on December 6, 1992, was facilitated through judiciary....

RSS तुम्हारा हिंदुकरण तुम्हें ब्राह्मण बनाने के लिए नहीं कर रहा। रहोगे तो तुम उनकी नज़रों में तब भी अछूत ही। और यह दुनिया का इतिहास बताता है कि पीड़ित/वंचित समुदाय ख़ुद के कितने भी नये positive नाम रख ले, dominating जाति/वर्ग की नज़र में हमेशा stigmatized ही रहता है। ब्राह्मणवादी पार्टियों का तुम्हारा और अंबेडकर का हिंदुकरण करने का प्रयास, सिर्फ तुम्हारा वोट पाने के लिए है। और तुम “देशहित” के नाम पर मूर्खों की तरह उन्हें वोट भी दे देते हो। ख़ुद को गर्व से हिंदू कहते हो। तुम यह नहीं सोचते कि “देशहित” के लिए दंगे कराना कौन सी बुद्धिमत्ता है। तुम यह नहीं देखते कि ये सरकार के लोग तुम्हारे भाई-बहनों के कॉलेज-विश्वविद्यालय पहुंचने पर उन्हें मरवा देते हैं, उनका बलात्कार करा देते हैं। और तुम्हें जैसे, डेल्टा मेघवाल और रोहित वेमुला के मरने पर कोई फर्क ही नहीं पड़ता हो। तुम्हें जैसे, तुम्हारे भाई-बहनों से टट्टी ढुलवाने पर गुस्सा ही नहीं आता हो। तुम्हें दुःख बस शीला दीक्षित और सुषमा स्वराज के मरने पर होता है।

अयोध्या मामले में मध्यस्थता आदेश भारतीय संवैधानिक राज्य व्यवस्था पर कुठाराघात है, जिसकी हिफाजत करना सर्वोच्च न्यायालय का अनिवार्य कर्तव्य है!
माननीय भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश महोदय,
दुनिया आपको भारतीय संवैधानिक राज्य व्यवस्था में नस्ल, पंथ, धर्म, भाषा, संस्कृति और लिंग आदि तमाम भेदभाव किए बिना सभी नागरिकों के प्रति समान व्यवहार के मुख्य रक्षक के रूप में जानती हैं। लेकिन, आपकी अध्यक्षता में गठित खंडपीठ (जस्टिसगण एस ए बोबडे, डी वाई चंद्रचूड़, अशोक भूषण और एस. अब्दुल नज़ीर) ने राम जन्मभूमि-बाबरी मस्जिद मामले में यह विचार व्यक्त किया गया है कि इस मामले में मुख्य विषय अयोध्या में राम जन्मभूमि-बाबरी मस्जिद स्थल को लेकर विवादित 2.77 एकड़ भूमि नहीं है बल्कि "धार्मिक भावनाओं" (religious sentiments) और "संबंधों में सुधार की संभावना"i (possibility of healing relationshipsi) की तलाश है। पक्षकारों के धर्मों का हवाला जरूर यहां नहीं है, फिर भी, जाहिर है कि यहां सर्वोच्च न्यायालय की पीठ का आशय हिंदू और मुसलमानों के बीच संबंधों को ठीक करना रहा है। इस तरह का नज़रिया, विधि के शासन या उचित कानूनी प्रक्रिया के सम्मुख गंभीर खतरा है, जबकि ये भारतीय संविधान की बुनियाद हैं।
श्रीमान, मामले में "धार्मिक भावनाएं" सम्मिलित हैं, इस प्रकार की दलील भारत को धर्मतांत्रिक शासन व्यवस्था (Theocracy) की आेर ले जाएगी। सौभाग्य से, पूर्व में सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने महिलाओं के पक्ष में एेतिहासिक फैसले करते समय या फिर1984 तथा 2002 के जनसंहारों में अपराधियों को दंडित करते वक्त, कभी भी धार्मिक भावनाआें जैसा मुद्दा नहीं उठाया गया। जब पीड़ित माननीय सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के सम्मुख अपना पक्ष रखते हैं, वे बहुसंख्यक या अल्पसंख्यक की हैसियत से आपके समक्ष नहीं आते बल्कि एक एेसे भारतीय नागरिक के रूप में उपस्थित होते हैं, जिसके साथ अन्याय हुआ है। वर्तमान मामले के बारे में, मैं निम्नलिखित तथ्यों पर आपका ध्यान आकर्षित कराना चाहूंगा :

India is considered the world's largest democracy. It has nearly 815 million eligible voters. Just a few years after its independence in 1947, the authors of the Indian constitution of 1950 took the extraordinarily bold step of establishing universal suffrage and all adult citizens of India received the right to vote. According to certain scholars, with this singular act, India became the world's first large democracy to adopt universal suffrage from its very inception as an independent country.

WHAT CRIMINALS COULD NOT ACHIEVE ON DECEMBER 6, 1992, IS LEGITIMIZED BY COURT
The author visited Ayodhya one month after the demolition of Babri mosque by the RSS/Shiv Sena/BJP cadres. It presented a picture of carnage, devastation, criminal participation of the Indian State in it but also underlining of the fact that secularism was not dead in Ayodhya. But today, on the 27th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri mosque I am not so sure, specially after the Supreme Court judgment on November 9, 2019, handing over mosque site to those who had razed the mosque. The moral of the story is that whatever criminals could not achieve on December 6, 1992, is legitimized by the highest court of justice of India.

In 2019, India's ruling BJP apparently entered the temple-building business after the Supreme Court of India issued a judgment in a land dispute — but what is the background of the Ayodhya dispute and why is it so foundational to the rise of the BJP?

HAS THE END OF THE INDIAN DEMOCRATIC-SECULAR POLITY  BEGUN?
India, sadly, is witnessing the Hindutva juggernaut running amok crushing whatever was democratic, liberal and egalitarian in the Indian polity. The RSS as the charioteer is not ashamed of this vicious campaign, instead, taking credit for it. It was not long back that it used to claim apolitical status. Even when its cadres like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani became rulers of India it would assure the nation that RSS was a socio-cultural organization and had nothing to do with politics. Organiser, mouthpiece of the RSS, in its editorial of February 6, 2000 went on to declare that, "the RSS is not a political party. It does not take part in elections nor its office bearers are supposed to become office bearers of any political party. The RSS has no election symbol nor its leadership or members have ever endeavoured to seek political office. It is a social-cultural organization trying to inspire all national activity." In fact, it was the pledge RSS made to the first home minister of India, Sardar Patel as a condition for withdrawal of ban on it for playing a role in the assassination of Father of the Nation, MK Gandhi.

But since Modi's becoming PM of India in March 2014, who describes himself as Hindu nationalist, situation has deteriorated for the worst. Now RSS sets the agenda and executes Hindutva politics which keeps democratic-secular India on the ventilator. Even the ventilators which include independent judiciary, neutral bureaucracy, Parliament and office of the President of the Republic have faltered in fulfilling their task of safeguarding our polity.
The President and PM neither talk to the media nor explain about burning issues faced by the nation. However, RSS boss, Mohan Bhagwat as the ideologue of the ruling Hindutva group makes statements about the direction of the government. He  has become the de-facto ruler of India. He is allowed to hold conclaves, as the only speaker, outlining the Hindu nationalist polarizing agenda, at institutions like Vigyan Bhawan which were meant to deliberate on strengthening our democratic polity. The latest parvachan or sermon was delivered at the RSS headquarters on the eve of  Vijaydashmi,  also the foundation day of RSS in 1925.
Abandoning any façade of respecting Indian constitutional polity and its processes he demanded that an ordinance should be brought in by the government for building the temple at Ayodhya at the place of demolished Babri mosque on December 6, 1992. It looked as if his chelas or cadres of RSS governing India had solved all critical problems like, violence against Dalits, hunger, poverty, unemployment, violence against women, absence of health and educational facilities and only issues like Ram temple are to be solved!

It is not difficult to understand the fall out of Indian Supreme Court's latest judgment on the demolition of the Babri mosque. It has been welcomed and celebrated by the RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. These were the organizations which led mob of Hindutva zealots which demolished Babri mosque at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 despite undertaking to the Supreme Court, Parliament and  the PM of India.

I visited Ayodhya after one month of demolition of Babri mosque there. A short report of this visit appeared in The Times of India, January 17, 1993. The scanned copy of it is being reproduced here. Looking at it quarter century later one is shocked to know that those criminals who demolished mosque at Ayodhya  despite commitment to courts, Parliament and the then PM, Narsimha Rao were destined to rule India as PM, deputy PM, CMs and Governors. It could happen in India only.

दिसंबर 6, 1992 को हिन्दुत्वादी आतंकवादियों ने अयोध्या में क्या किया था?
इस दुखद सच को झुटलाना मुश्किल है कि हमारा देश जिस को दुनिया का सब से बड़ा लोकतंत्र माना जाता है वहां दो तरह की न्यायक पद्धतियां काम करती हैं। एक है जब बहुमत धर्म और ऊंची जातियों से जुड़े लोग/संगठन अल्पसंखयकों और दलितों के खिलाफ हिंसा करते हैं तो  हिंसा करने वाले मुजरिमों को सज़ा मिलना तो दूर की बात है उनकी पहचान भी नहीं हो पाती है।  यह चाहे बांग्ला भाषी मुसलमानों का नेल्ली जनसंहार (1983), सिख जनसंहार (1984०), बाबरी मस्जिद के विध्वंस (से पहले और बाद में 1992-93 के दौरान मुसलमान विरोधी हिंसा), गुजरात जनसंहार (2002), कंधमाल ईसाई जनसंहार (2007) या दलितों के अनगिनित जनसंहारों में से कुछ जैसे कि बथानी टोला (1996),लक्ष्मणपुर बाथे (1997), मिर्चपुर (2010) खैरलांजी (2006) किलवेलमानी (1968) किलविलमणि हों। क़ातिलों, बलात्कारियों और लुटेरों की पहचान नहीं हो पाती है और राज्य आयोग पर आयोग बिठाकर अल्पसंखयक और दलित विरोधी जनसंहारों को रफ़ा-दफ़ा करने के काम में ही जुटा रहता है। 
लेकिन अगर अल्पसंखयकों या दलितों दुवारा 'हिंसा' की गयी हो तो तुरंत फांसी और उम्रक़ैद दे कर 'इंसाफ़' किया जाता है।
यही खेल बाबरी मस्जिद के विध्वंस वाले मामले में खेला जा रहा है। 25 साल के बाद भी मस्जिद के गिराने वालों जिन्हों ने ऐलान करके इसे गिराया था को सज़ा नहीं दी गयी बल्कि वे देश के प्रधान-मंत्री, उप प्रधान मंत्री और मंत्री बने।  इस के बरअक्स मस्जिद की मिल्कियत को लेकर क़ानूनी लड़ाई की जा रही है।
दिसंबर 6, 1992 के दिन अयोध्या में मस्जिद और मुसलमानों के साथ किया हुवा था इस को जानना ज़रूरी है। देश की प्रजांतरिक-धर्मनिरपेक्ष वयवस्था के साथ हिन्दुत्वादी संगठनों ने जो शर्मनाक खेल खेला था उस की एक रपट पेश है जो नीलिमा शर्मा और शम्सुल इस्लाम ने बाबरी विध्वंस के एक महीने बाद वहां जाकर तैयार की थी। 
यह रपट जनवरी 31, 1993 को दैनिक जनसत्ता में छपी थी।
