Conduziu-se um experimento em casa de vegetação com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade dos frutos de maracujazeiro doce cultivado sob deficiência de macronutrientes e B. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com o oito tratamentos (solução completa, -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -S e B), com quatro repetições. Utilizaram-se, como unidade experimental, caixas com 46 kg de areia lavada, contendo duas plantas/caixa, irrigadas com solução nutritiva. Todas as deficiências reduziram o número de frutos/planta, e sob deficiência de Mg as plantas não floresceram. As deficiências nutricionais não influenciaram no peso médio dos frutos, no Nº de sementes/fruto, no comprimento do fruto e na porcentagem do suco. As deficiências de N e de P aumentaram a espessura e a concentração de casca do fruto. The effect of climate was observed on fruit quality of four low-chill peach cultivars (Flordaprince, Flordaglo, UFGold, and TropicBeauty). The cultivars were evaluated in three locations (north–central, central, and southwest Florida). Soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), SSC:TA ratio, fruit weight, blush, and fruit development period (FDP) were determined. Longer FDPs were observed at the north–central location than at the southwest location. Fruit development and the expression of quality attributes were affected by location during fruit growth with higher color and SSC and shorter FDP occurring under warmer conditions. Within locations, ‘UFGold’ had the shortest FDP except at the southwest location where its chilling requirement may not have been met. At the central and southwest locations, ‘UFGold’ also tended to have lower TA values and higher SSC;TA ratios than the other cultivars.

DETERMINATION OF FIBRE % cane is at the core of the evaluation of cane and for factory control purposes. The acceptability of any method depends on the accuracy of results, complexity of procedure, time required for the procedure and especially for skilled personnel. The availability of skilled analysts in developing countries is a matter of concern, hence the need for an alternative method which should be accurate and is less time consuming for skilled analysts. Considering this, an alternative method was devised which requires only two analyses i.e. moisture of the sampled cane and refractometer brix of the extracted juice. As fewer analyses are involved, the alternative method requires less time for the skilled analyst. The probability of random error is also less due to fewer analyses; hence, results are fairly accurate under repeatable and reproducible conditions. The accuracy of the alternative method when compared with the ICUMSA official method has a relative error e r of –0.01%. It is concluded that the alternative method is fairly accurate, easy in procedure, and the time required by the analyst is lower compared to any other method. Two methods for determination of fibre % cane are common in the subcontinent i.e. (1) ICUMSA official method, GS5/7-1994 and (2) bag diffusion method. Though the ICUMSA method is accurate and requires less time i.e. about 6–7 hours than the 24 hours for the bag diffusion method, it is surprisingly less attractive for laboratory staff. Perhaps due to the involvement of various equipment and analyses, this requires considerable time by a highly skilled analyst to complete the procedure. That is why the ICUMSA method is less common and the bag diffusion method is more attractive in the subcontinent. A need for an accurate method which is less time consuming had always been felt very eagerly, as the availability of skilled analysts is a matter of concern in developing countries. Considering these issues, an alternative method that is referred to as the 'Hamna method' has been developed for the determination of fibre % cane. Only two analyses (1) moisture of the prepared cane and (2) brix of the extracted juice for the same sample of cane are required. The formula devised for the calculation is based on internationally accepted definitions and assumptions. Materials and method To assess the accuracy of the proposed Hamna method with respect to the ICUMSA method, analysis of 50 samples of different cane varieties were carried out for determination of fibre % cane at the independent laboratory of Faran Sugar Mills Limited. The results of both methods were compared for relative error, e r %, and correlation coefficient.

An experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with the objective to evaluate the quality of the fruits of sweet passion fruit cultivated under deficiency of macronutrients and boron. Eight treatments with four replicates in a randomized complete block design were set up as follow: complete nutrient solution, -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -S and -B. The experimental unity was a plastic box filled with 46 kg of river sand containing two plants irrigated with the nutrient solutions. All deficiencies reduced the fruit number per plant, and under Mg deficiency no flowers were formed. None of the nutrition deficiencies influence the mean weight of the fruits, the number of seeds per fruit, the length of the fruit and the percentage of juice. The deficiencies of N and P increased peel thickness and concentration in the fruit and they reduced seed percentage in the fruit. The deficiencies of N, P and K reduced the concentration of total soluble solids; K reduced the total titratable acidity; P reduced the pH and increased the vitamin C concentration, while the vitamin C concentration was reduced by the deficiencies of N, K and S. The characteristics of the fruits were not influenced by the deficiencies of Ca and B.

Composted sewage sludge (CSS) contains large amounts of organic matter and nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer to improve growth, yield, and quality of sugarcane. However, there is a lack of information regarding the impact of CSS application on sugarcane seedling performance in nursery environments. A field study was conducted using a randomized complete block design to evaluate the development, nutritional status, productivity, and technological quality of sugarcane seedlings after CSS application with or without mineral fertilizer. In this study, a two-variable linear regression model for predicting carrot brix (BRX) based on water content (WC) and firmness (FIR) of carrot was suggested. Paired samples t-test results showed that the difference between the brix values predicted by two-variable linear regression model and measured by laboratory tests were not statistically significant and to predict carrot BRX based on WC and FIR of carrot the two-variable linear regression model BRX = 36.94-0.368 WC + 0.001 FIR with R = 0.87 can be suggested. 2

°Brix, which has been commonly used for expressing the juice quality of the so-called table citrus, has been frequently used also for expressing the juice quality of acid citrus despite no definitive information being available on how good °Brix is for this purpose. Therefore a study to elucidate correlations between °Brix with acid and sugar contents in the juice of acid citrus was carried out. The results showed no correlation at all between °Brix and acid content or sugar-to-acid ratios and low, though significant, correlations between °Brix and sugar contents. °Brix or total soluble solid content seemed to be less informative for expressing the juice quality of acid citrus fruits than for measuring acid and sugar contents individually.
