Von »Ich und Du« bis zum Nachwort zu den diesbezüglichen Schriften versammelt der Band Bubers Grundtexte zum dialogischen Prinzip. In ihnen geht es um Begegnung, den Dialog zwischen dem Ich und dem Anderen, zwischen Mensch und »ewigem Du«, also Gott. Auf der Grundlage der Bedeutung von Beziehung vertieft Buber die Frage nach dem Einzelnen, den Anderen und nach Gottes Ort in der Zwischenmenschlichkeit. Für den Kenner des Hauptwerkes von Buber wird insbesondere der Zugang zu den handschriftlichen Vorlagen der Haupttexte wie »Ich und Du« oder »Zwiesprache« wertvoll sein.

Het begrip schuld is meerzinnig en complex. In een economische setting heeft het een andere betekenis dan in een juridische setting en ook daar weer een andere dan in een morele, psychologische of religieuze setting. De auteur houdt zich in dit artikel vooral bezig met morele, existentiële schuld. Hij maakt onderscheid tussen debitum en culpa, individuele schuld en collectieve schuld, schuld hebben en schuldig zijn, lot en schuld.

Despite his claim that his work was rooted in Socratic dialogue, little attention has been given to the implications of Kierkegaard’s ideas for communication. This article examines two aspects of Kierkegaard’s philosophy of communication. First, it considers Kierkegaardian critiques of chatter, everyday talk, and the press and considers how these activities are involved in a process of objectification he called leveling. Second, this essay investigates Kierkegaard’s distinction between the communication of knowledge (Videns Meddelelse) and the communication of capability (Kunnis Meddelelse). Finally, it situates Kierkegaard within the dialogic tradition and presents a variety of possibilities for exploring Kierkegaardian thought further within the communication discipline.

Muchos libros y artículos que se han escrito acerca del pensamiento dialógico de Martin Buber subrayan que el Jasidismo fue su principal fuente religiosa de inspiración para su obra Yo y Tú; y las respectivas contribuciones de los estudiosos están incompletas y/o dispersas en la literatura especializada o simplemente son declaraciones generales sin el sustento de un aparato crítico. Sin pretender realizar una discusión exhaustiva, en este artículo se hará un análisis hermenéutico de los textos de algunos fragmentos biográficos de la vida de Martin Buber, y de otras obras claves de su autoría, con el objeto de mostrar cómo el Jasidismo influenció a Buber e identificar los elementos que él extrajo de este movimiento religioso judío que le sirvieron para formular su pensamiento dialógico en su obra Yo y Tú. Para propósitos metodológicos, se dividió la vida intelectual de Buber en tres períodos, desde su niñez hasta la publicación de su obra Yo y Tú en 1923. Como un resultado de este análisis este artículo muestra que la contribución del jasidismo a la formulación del pensamiento dialógico buberiano está centrado en dos aspectos esenciales que Buber presenció en las comunidades Jasídicas de su tiempo y que también leyó en los relatos de los primeros maestros jasídicos: la estrecha relación Rabino-discípulo y en la relación entre el Rabino y el Dios de Israel. En este sentido, para Buber, la primera relación es un ejemplo de la relación dialógica Yo-Tú y la segunda, es también un ejemplo similar de la relación dialógica Yo-Tú Eterno. Además, se muestra que estas relaciones dialógicas del Jasidismo tiene el potencial de eliminar las relaciones Yo-Ello. La conexión entre la formación filosófica de Buber y su experiencia con el Jasidismo que sería la chispa inicial para la formulación del pensamiento dialógico buberiano, es también mostrada.

Het feitelijk zijn van de mens is in hoge mate afhankelijk van zijn zelfkennis en uitdrukkelijke zelfinterpretatie. De idee die hij zich heeft gevormd over het mens-zijn of die hij overgeleverd heeft gekregen, zijn mensbeeld, raakt hemzelf. Maar daarmee is niet alles gezegd. Want die idee gaat de mens ook te buiten. Ze is namelijk een belangrijke factor bij het tot stand komen van de concrete omgang met anderen en van de concrete belichaming van die omgang in bovenpersoonlijke verbanden en gemeenschappen. Een mensbeeld is zowel feitelijk als normatief. Het betreft dat wat de mens is en wat hij geacht wordt te moeten zijn. We beoordelen onszelf en anderen vanuit ons mensbeeld. Een protestantse visie op de rechten van het kind wordt sterk gekleurd door bij protestanten dominante mensbeelden. Deze zijn ontleend aan de Bijbel en aan diverse theologen en filosofen uit verleden en heden. “Nothing could limit the homage due him” — such was Emmanuel Levinas’s estimation of Martin Buber (OS, 41). The numerous essays Levinas dedicated to the examination of Buber’s thought reveal the high esteem in which he held Buber. Yet these essays also demonstrate the profound disagreement between the two thinkers on a number of fundamental issues — a disagreement that has not been sufficiently explored. In the following pages, I shall focus on Levinas’s critique of Buber’s notion of reciprocity, contrasting it with the prominent place of the “other” in Levinas’s thought. Levinas’s emphasis on the other contributes notably to contemporary ethical discourse, particularly in a time characterized by increasing intolerance towards the other and the violence that accompanies this intolerance. However, Buber’s thought does not lend itself to an ethical relation that commences with the other, or to an ethical relation founded upon the other. Unlike Levinas, Buber believed that “if all were clothed and well nourished, then the real ethical problem would become wholly
visible for the first time” (PMB, 723).

The „Amsterdam School‟ forms a heterogeneous movement within Dutch theology. Its emphasis lies on exegesis, biblical theology and Bible translation. Their thought is influenced by Buber en Rosenzweig, Barth, Miskotte and Breukelman. This thesis attempts to spell out their distincive ideas and presuppositions about Bible translation. A key idea is that theology precedes translation. This presupposition is tested through a comparison of translations. On first sight, the Dutch Statenvertaling has a lot in common with the „Amsterdam‟ approach, but through a careful examination the differences and similarities between both translation traditions are formulated.

Martin Bubers 'Ik en jij', gepubliceerd in 1923, is een meesterstuk van dialogisch denken. In zijn commentaar op dit werk vergelijkt Ephraim Meir Bubers denken met dat van andere dialogische denkers: Cohen, Rosenzweig, Heschel en Levinas. Hij volgt verder Bubers eigen latere preciseringen op de voet. Op deze wijze wordt 'Ik en jij' gesitueerd binnen Bubers breder levenswerk en binnen een ruimere denkbeweging die nog lang niet tot voltooiing gekomen is.

Meirs exegese kan de specialist aanspreken, maar is ook voor een breder publiek bestemd. Het toont de actualiteit aan van Bubers filosofie en vormt een bijdrage tot het dialogisch denken en de dialogische existentie.

The lecture will discuss portrayals of Eastern European Hasidism as "pure mysticism" in the writings of Martin Buber (especially his early stories about R. Nahman of Bratslav and the Baal Shem Tov), as well as the reception of such portrayals by non-Jews and mystics in Eastern Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Many scholars have already analyzed the romantic picture painted by Buber, but without sufficient attention paid to the responses of Hasidim and other Eastern European thinkers to that picture. It seems that at precisely the time that Buber was holding up a form of "pure Hasidism" in contradistinction to the contemporary movement - which, in his opinion, had become stagnant -- a profound renaissance was in fact occurring in Eastern European Hasidism. Not only were Buber's portrayals disconnected from historical reality, he will fully ignored the Hasidic renaissance happening at the time. The lecture will discuss briefly the responses of a few Eastern European thinkers and scholars who contested Buber's description, while focusing on the unique response of the Warsaw mystic Hillel Zeitlin.

Jury nullification is the ability of juries to acquit criminal defendants even against the apparent weight of the law and the facts. This commentary asks whether jury nullification is a “bug” or a “feature” of the American criminal trial, a question separate, for example, from whether it is good or bad. The commentary concludes, tentatively, that jury nullification, on one understanding, might be a “feature.” It might reflect the jury’s authority, in exceptional cases, to particularize the applicable law by way of its existential engagement with a live defendant and the unique circumstances of a case. The possibility of jury nullification might therefore represent the legal system’s implicit recognition that law can have a granular as well as a global quality. A determination of granular law does not subject the rule of law to an abstract principle such as “justice” or the “democratic will.” It rather zooms in to expose the otherwise-unseen gaps or possibilities beyond the formality of the rule.

This power to uncover the granularity in the facts of a criminal trial is understandably and even necessarily controversial. The article looks for analogues in religious normative systems, examining the authority of Jewish legal decisors and the dispute over the meaning and legitimacy of Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia. Such analogues are only suggestive, however. At the end of the day, the embrace of an understanding of jury nullification along the lines outlined here would require both a deeper vision of the jury and a more adequate and more complex theory of law.

This essay presents the perception of dialogical teaching models as one which is concerned primarily with the cognitive layers of the dialogue, and focuses on the cognitive functions of learning, information processing, interpretation and decision making. This perception is presented in the essay as ignoring the relational dimensions of the dialogue. On the other hand, the essay argues that research attempts to offer non-cognitive dialogical models which focus on the interpersonal aspect, while emphasising relations such as containment and empathy, do not necessarily contribute to the realisation of an educational dialogue and may block the creation of the ‘sphere of the between,’ which is essential to the development of genuine dialogue. The essay suggests referring to the existential approach and argues that the choice of dialogical relation is one that involves a powerful and continuous existential struggle between the ‘I-Thou’ and the ‘I-it’ modes of relation.
