Ornament of the 6th–7th century belt buckles and fittings is a less explored issue. Although there are few publications concerning this topic, a systematic processing of data is still missing. This study presents the connection between motifs of a special group of belt buckles and mounts, how the motifs transform from one to another, a typology of the motifs and interpretation of the motifs as christian or apotropaic symbols. In this study solely motifs from the buckles and fittings are analysed, their form is here not discussed. Results show that both motif groups overlap one another to some extent and they can be related to the motifs of the early 6th – late 5th centuries. Typology provides information about the ways of motif-transformations: geometrization and fragmentation of palm-leaf motifs.

The last archaeological investigations in Piazza dei Miracoli (2003-2009) added important information about the Lombard presence in Pisa from the early decades of the 7th century. A new burial was discovered which contained, among other artefacts, a small buckle of “byzantine type”, figured and with inscriptions. In this article the characteristics of this piece are analyzed in order to discuss its chronology and the ambit of its production, with the help of the archaeological data as well as of the jewellery and the coinage of the period.
