Often simply called the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos was the most famous center of Byzantine monasticism and remains the spiritual heart of the Orthodox Church today. This volume presents the Lives of Euthymios the Younger, Athanasios of Athos, Maximos the Hutburner, Niphon of Athos, and Philotheos. These five holy men lived on Mount Athos at different times from its early years as a monastic locale in the ninth century to the last decades of the Byzantine period in the early fifteenth century. All five were celebrated for asceticism, clairvoyance, and, in most cases, the ability to perform miracles; Euthymios and Athanasios were also famed as founders of monasteries.

Holy Men of Mount Athos illuminates both the history and the varieties of monastic practice on Athos, individually by hermits as well as communally in large monasteries. The Lives also demonstrate the diversity of hagiographic composition and provide important glimpses of Byzantine social and political history.

All the Lives in this volume are presented for the first time in English translation, together with authoritative editions of their Greek texts.

Выпуск №№ 5 – 6 альманаха «Афонское наследие» приурочен к 295-летию со дня рождения прп. Паисия Величковского (1722 – 1794), оставившего неизгладимый след в духовности и культуре Украины, России, Молдовы, Румынии, Греции и других православных стран.
В очередной выпуск альманаха вошли материалы проведенных Международным институтом афонского наследия в Украине научных конференций и круглых столов.
В частности, в альманахе впервые в полном объеме опубликованы неизвестные ранее письма прп. Паисия Величковского, подтверждающие факт передачи ему и его «малороссийскому братству» «на вечные времена» древнего афонского монастыря Симонопетра. Также представлены сведения о создании киевскими князьями на Афоне в XI – XII вв. древнерусских монастырей «Ксилургу» и «Старый Русик» .
Всего в этот выпуск альманаха вошло 28 статей известных ученых и богословов из девяти стран мира (Украина, Великобритания, Италия,  Болгария, Россия, Молдова, Польша, Германия, США). В них исследователи на основе архивных документов рассматривают историю взаимоотношений Киевской Руси и стран Центрально-Восточной Европы с мировым центром православного монашества и мистицизма на Афоне. Количество страниц — 406, имеется большое количество иллюстраций.
Особое внимание в сборнике уделяется роли и значению Афона, его традиций и наследия в формировании самобытной отечественной духовности и культуры, а также зарождению древнерусского монашества на Святой Горе, его связям с Киевской Русью и славянским миром.

В статье исследуется история создания киевскими князьями на Афоне в XI – XII вв. древнерусских монастырей «Ксилургу» и «Старый Русик», а также духовно-культурные связи Киевской Руси и Афона. Критически рассматривается легенда о пребывании прп. Антония Печерского в греческом монастыре Эсфигмен, высказывается предположение ктиторской помощи древнерусскому монастырю на Афоне Евфросинии Полоцкой, Лазаря Богши и киевского князя Изяслава - Пантелеимона Мстиславича (ок. 1097-1154 гг.). Также рассматривается возможность причастности игумена Русика Мефодия к основанию монастыря на Почаевской горе на Волыни.

В статье впервые анализируются и публикуются письмо прп. Паисия Величковского к митрополиту Киевскому Арсению (Могилянскому) от 20 апреля 1763 г., а также грамоты бывшего Константинопольского патриарха Кирилла V (Каракаллоса) и Собора Святой Горы за подписью игуменов 20 афонских монастырей за 1762 г., в которых сообщается, что решением общего «Священно-Духовного всея Святыя Горы Собора» обитель Симонопетра передана духовнику Паисию Малороссу и его «малороссийскому братству», как и «приходящых зъ россійскихъ странъ их Сѣчи Запорожской», «во вѣчнія рωди».
Документы эти хранятся в материалах дела о приезде в Киев с Афона в 1762 г. учеников прп. Паисия иеродиакона Парфения (Кармазина) и монаха Гавриила (Петки) для сбора пожертвований в Запорожской Сечи и по всей Украине на восстановление обители Симонопетра, именуемой в грамотах «Новым Вифлиемом».
В статье на основе упомянутых выше писем подробно описывается пребывание старца Паисия Величковского с «малороссийской» братией в этом знаменитом афонском монастыре и причины их ухода оттуда в дальнейшем.
Как отмечается в статье, в письме прп. Паисия Величковского к митрополиту Киевскому Арсению (Могилянскому) от 20 апреля 1763 г. из первых уст мы узнаем о том, что монастырь Симонопетра был передан ему по решению Собора Святой Горы. Как сообщает старец, «видящи соборъ Святыя Горы в малом нашεм скитку оумножεнїя ради братїи вεликую тѣсноту, и тяжεсти ради во оном скиту воздуха крайнεε здравїя ихъ разорεнїε, оусовѣтовали и приговорили были ωтдати нам εдинъ ωпустѣлый монастыр имεнуεмый Сїмопетръ, болшагω ради общεму нашεму житїю оутвεрждεнїя».
Факт передачи обители Симонопетра прп. Паисию подтверждается и в грамотах как Собора святогорских монастырей, так и патриарха Кирилла V.

Detailed presentation of administrative structure and daily life on Mount Athos during the first Ottoman centuries, based on Russian and French travel accounts (ex. Pierre Belon). Their informations are verified meticulously, where available, against the background of Ottoman sources of the time.

Thereafter, it is highlighted the direct institutional attachment of Mount Athos to the Ecumenical Patriarchate from 1312 -- an act renewed precisely in 1498 by Patriarch Joachim I -- which placed the appointment of the protos of the monastic republic within the exclusive competence of the Great Church. On this basis, a research axiom is formulated, asserting that any institutional link with Mount Athos is an indirect trace, a barometer, of relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate itself. This axiom is important as it helps to fill a significant information gap: for if the archives of Mount Athos have been preserved, those of the Ecumenical Patriarchate before c. 1550 have been almost entirely destroyed, hence the difficulties of historical reconstruction of this transitional period. For honest and informed researchers, therefore, the precariousness of the information is far from signifying the inexistence of relations with the Great Church, since the analysis of Athonite history can fill in the gaps.

On this basis, we revisit the episode of the rejection of Patriarch Joachim I by Prince Bogdan III of Moldavia in 1505, during his "second trip" to that country, concluding that it has nothing to do with an imaginary Moldavian "fortuitous autocephaly" (L. Pilat) that by the way no source attests. Bogdan III acted in this manner by actually supporting the accession to the patriarchal throne of Joachim I's rival - Patriarch Pachomios I. The latter was to undertake later a canonical visit of great importance to the Romanian Principalities, in 1513, reaffirming the reality of patriarchal jurisdiction and the privileged ties of the Great Church with the princes of both countries. No wonder that this visit is, from Stefan Gorovei on, arbitrarily declared as inexistant by the adepts of the "Moldavian autocephaly", always at odds with the historical record as well as the scientific logic.

The study presents and analyzes the seven authentic medieval Bulgarian charters which are kept the Bulgarian Athonite monastery of Zographou. This foundation possesses only one authentic medieval Bulgarian document – the chrysobull of the Bulgarian Czar, John Alexander (Slavic act no. 1, March 1342), which confirms an earlier donations of his relative, the Byzantine emperor John V Palaiologos, made in January 1342. As this charter pertains to properties located not on Bulgarian but on Byzantine territory, it has never had legal value of its own. The second Bulgarian royal charter kept in Zographou (Slavic act no. 2, before 1382) has nothing to do with this monastery and refers to a monastic house situated in Mount Vitoša, near the modern Bulgarian capital of Sofia. The next three acts date from the period 1500-1572 and elucidate one minor private donation (Slavic act no. 4, 1568) and the relations between the Slavic Athonite monasteries of Chilandar and Zographou (Slavic act no. 3, 1500-1501, and Slavic act no. 5, 1572). The undated Slavic translations of the Greek documents of 1290 and 1317 (Slavic acts nos. 6 and 7) were definitely made shortly before 1572 in order to facilitate the transaction described in Slavic act no. 5, i.e. the exchange of agricultural terrains between Zographou and Chilandar. In other words in the archives of the Bulgarian Athonite monastic house of Zographou there is only one medieval Slavic document. This conclusion sounds quite unusual, given the fact that the neighbouring monastery of Kastamonitou has 4 Serbian donative charters of the period 1428-1433, Vatopedi has 12 Slavic documents dated to the period 1230-1610, Chilandar has more than 40 Slavic acts issued between 1330 and 1430.

Стаття присвячена історії афонських давньоруських монастирів «Ксилургу» і «Русик» та їхнім зв’язкам з Київською Руссю. Зазначено, що зародження чернецтва в Русі відбувалося за безпосереднього впливу афонських монастирів. Невдовзі після хрещення на Святій Горі з’явилася руська обитель на честь Успіння Богородиці, також відома як Ксилургу. Виявлений в архіві Великої лаври акт за 1016 р. засвідчує, що тоді на Афоні вже існував руський монастир, настоятелем якого був ігумен Герасим. Про нього згадано в документах від 1030, 1048 і 1070-х рр., що збереглися в архіві афонського Пантелеймонівського монастиря. Досі немає достеменних відомостей, де саме на Святій Горі прийняв чернечий постриг засновник Києво-Печерської лаври Антоній Печерський. Вивчення історії Ксилургу дає підстави вважати, що «батько» руського чернецтва перебував саме тут. Як і Київська лавра, цей монастир було присвячено Успінню Богородиці, що також вказує на певний зв’язок між ними. Традиція присвячувати центральні храми саме Успінню Богородиці поступово поширилася по всій Русі. В акті від 1048 р. візантійський імператор Константин IX Мономах назвав Ксилургу «царською лаврою», закріпивши за обителлю відповідні привілеї. Документи ХІІ ст. однозначно свідчать, що у цьому монастирі жили вихідці з Русі. Так, в описі майна від 1142 р. згадано 49 «руських книг», натомість про грецькі взагалі не йдеться. Це вказує не лише на національність насельників обителі, але й на одне з можливих їх занять – книгопереписування.

This essay studies the role of St Athanasius the Athonite as a monastic founder in the conception and construction of the main church (katholikon) for his monastic community, the Great Lavra on Mount Athos. The examination of the katholikon’s architectural layout, elements and features, as well as its construction chronology, both set against the information offered by the monastery’s rules, written by Athanasius himself, his testament and two biographies, illuminates his involvement in the formation of the building. The application of the cross-in-square plan with a narrow narthex, which was seemingly the preferred choice for coenobitic communities, can be regarded as standard or traditionalist. Some other design solutions that Athanasius employed, such as the addition of the two lateral conches to the naos and the establishment of two subsidiary chapels attached to the narthex, were somewhat idiosyncratic at the time, but turned out to be influential, as they were soon after embraced by other Athonite monasteries. Therefore, his decisions can be also viewed as creative and innovative, likely taken in response to particular local needs or with some vision in mind. These considerations contribute to the much-needed understanding of the design process in Byzantium and the monastic founder’s place in it.

The monograph offers the reader a critical edition of 12 mid-Byzantine documents kept in the Athonite monastery of Zographou. They illustrate the earliest period of the monastery's history and cover the period 980-1282. The basic thematic entities discussed in the book are:
1. Mediaeval architectural remains in Zographou.
2. The archives of the minor monastery of the Holy Apostles.
3. The early years of Zographou and the tower of Selina.
4. The archives of the minor monastery of Xerokastrou.
5. The acquisitions of 1142.
6. Bulgarians in the monastery of Zographou.
7. The fraud affair of 1266-1267.
8. Zographou and the Latin threat.
9. Zographou dependency of St. Nicholas in Thessalonica.
10. Zographou dependency of Our Lady Kraniotissa near the Strymon River.
11. The earliest decriptions of Zographou landed property.

The article deals with the little studied and partially unpublished corpus of works composed by Kallistos Angelikoudes, one of the most interesting authors of late Byzantine hesychasm. It addresses some of the problems associated with the manuscript tradition of Kallistos’ writings. Among other things, the article introduces the manuscript Vatop. 610 from Athos, which until now has been virtually unknown to scholars studying the manuscript tradition of Kallistos Angelikoudes. The article also offers a new approach to the systematization of Kallistos' works. In conclusion, it traces the origins of the unique text possibly composed at the end of the fourteenth century and known as the Canon of Compunction. The text is attributed in manuscripts to Makarios Kataphygiotes, believed to be one of Kallistos Angelikoudes’ disciples.

The monograph offers the reader a critical edition of 74 post-Byzantine Greek and Slavic documents kept in the archives of the Athonite monastery of Vatopedi. The main issues discussed in the book are:

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda manastır topluluklarının yoğun olarak bulunduğu Aynaroz Dağı, Kudüs-i Şerif ve Sina Dağı (Mısır) gibi yerler için Eflak-Boğdan hususi bir önem arz ediyordu. Zira sözü edilen manastırların bu topraklarda vakıf arazileri bulunmaktaydı. Birçoğu Hristiyanlık tarihinin önemli isimlerine adanarak kurulmuş olan bu manastırlar, görevlendirdikleri özel memurlar marifetiyle, kendileri için tahsis edilmiş olan bu arazilerin gelirlerini devşirmekteydiler. Eflak-Boğdan idaresinin Fenerli Rumlara emanet edildiği dönemde ise adanmış kilise ve manastırlara ayrılan araziler, tüm Memleketeyn topraklarının neredeyse %11’ini teşkil edecek kadar genişlemişti. Ancak bu tablo, 19. yüzyılın siyasal şartlarının da etkisiyle değişmeye başlamıştır. Bu anlamda Fransa’nın destek verdiği Alexandru Ioan Cuza’nın Eflak-Boğdan Voyvodası olması bir kırılma olarak kabul edilebilir. Nitekim Prens Cuza’nın söz konusu arazileri kamulaştırmaya yönelik politikası Memleketeyn Emareti ile Rum Patrikhanesi’nin sözcülüğündeki Ortodoks mabetleri arasında büyük bir tartışmaya neden olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi belgelerinden hareketle, bugüne kadar başlı başına bir araştırmanın konusu yapılmamış “Adanmış Manastırlar Sorunu” ele alınacak, bu suretle Osmanlı Devleti’nin gerek Hristiyan tebaası ile ilgili hassasiyetleri gerekse Balkan ülkeleri ile ilgili politikaları tahlil edilecektir. Bununla birlikte kutsal yerler ile ilgili meselelerin savaş bahanesi sayılabildiği bir çağda, benzer bir sorun ile karşı karşıya kalan Osmanlı Devleti’nin, bu sorunun çözümünde nasıl bir yol takip ettiği incelenecektir.

Abstract : For places such as Athos Mountain, Jerusalem-i Sharif and Mount Sinai (Egypt) where the monastery communities were concentrated in the Ottoman Empire, Wallachia and Bogdan (Moldovia) had a special importance. Because the monasteries in question had foundations in these lands. These monasteries, many of which were dedicated to the important names of the history of Christianity, reap the revenues of these lands allocated for them, with the help of special officers whom they were assigned to. In the period when the administration of Eflak and Bogdan was given to Fenerlian Greeks, the land devoted to dedicated churches and monasteries was enlarged to almost 11% of all the land of Wallachia and Bogdan. However, this situation began to change with the influence of the political conditions of the 19th century. In this sense, Alexandru Ioan Cuza's being a Wallachian-Bogdan Prince can be regarded as a turning point. As a matter of fact, the policy of expropriation by the Prince Cuza, supported by France, caused a great debate between the administration of Wallachia and Bogdan and the Orthodox temples under the patronage of the Greek Patriarchate. In this study, with the help of the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives, " The İssue of Dedicated Monasteries " which has not been done on its own is going to be examined so that the Ottoman State will be analyzed about its sensitivity to the Christian citizens and the politics related to the Balkan countries. Nevertheless, in an age when matters related to the Holy Places can be considered as a matter of war, the Ottoman Empire, which faced a similar problem, will examine how it pursues the solution of this problem.

The scale of the Bulgarian presence to the north of Mount Athos is well illustrated by the numerous Slavic toponyms in this region, such as Provlakas (10th-21th c.), Globutzitza (934-982), Lozikin (982-1141), Gradiska (982-1001), Zelenitza (982-1001), Develikeia (1042-21th c.), Kamena (908-1071), Radohosta (1008), Roudava (1008-1085), Resetinikeia (996) and Muzdoloka (996). The situation inside Athos is illustrated by the Slavic place names Cherni Vir or Mavros Viros (980-21th c.), Tzernoglavou (1071), Banitza (1018- 21th c,), the monasteries of Zelianos (1033-1363) and Kaletzi (1045-1080).

Middle Byzantine monastic churches predominantly feature a cross-in-square naos with a three-bayed narthex.  It is most likely that this layout was adopted by the Stoudite monasticism as the most suitable for its coenobitic and liturgical needs.  This architectural type may have been first used and its advantages recognized in the initial monastery of St. Theodore the Stoudite’s community – Sakkoudion – or, more likely, in the region where it was situated, Bithynia.
This important monastic center was where St. Athanasius the Athonite started his monastic vocation.  He was undoubtedly well acquainted with the architecture of the region, which he brought to Mount Athos together with the Stoudite monastic typikon, when he established the Great Lavra and constructed its katholikon.  However, Athanasius’s approach was responsive to available resources and local needs.  This is witnessed by the somewhat rough and inexpert execution of the katholikon, as well as his several readjustments of the church design during the construction, the best known being the addition of the two lateral conches to the naos, in order to better accommodate choirs of chanters.  The same approach is visible in the setting out of his monastic quarters, consisting of a chapel, a library, and his cell, in the over-narthex area and the establishment of two subsidiary chapels attached to the narthex, one of which was used by him to hear confessions and eventually housed his tomb.
All these functional and architectural solutions provided precedents that were emulated within a short time period in at least two other Hagiorite monastic houses, Ivērōn and Vatopedi, becoming characteristic features of Athonite church architecture.  The latter two katholika also show their own creative responses to the model, thus indicating that monastic founders and their communities were dependent on traditions as much as they were open to innovations if these proved better suited to their actual needs.  This paper is going to explore both mechanisms: how the existing forms were transmitted between monastic communities and when innovations were found permissible or even necessary.

Il articolo analizza il culto di San Costantino nei monasteri del Monte Athos, in primo luogo il problema della presenza di edifici ecclesiastici dedicati a lui, cioè l’aspetto archeologico del tema; e in secondo luogo, il contenuto di testi storici e religiosi scritti per l’imperatore a Sacro Monte, cioè l’aspetto storiografi co e ideologico del culto. I testi athoniti riferentisi a San Costantino sono pochi e di importanza marginale. Questi testi non ci permettono di parlare di un culto religioso sviluppato. La venerazione di San Costantino non esistè in epoca bizantina, mentre durante i secoli della dominazione ottomana si limitò a tre piccole cappelle nei monasteri di San Paolo, di Vatopedi e di Nea Schiti. Le leggende athonite del Seicento e del Settecento presentano il primo imperatore cristiano come un mitico fondatore di tre conventi athoniti – di Vatopedi, di Kastamonitou e di Protaton. La più grande diffusione di queste leggende è attestata fra il 1650 e il 1700. Dopo il 1700 le leggende del mitico fondatore San Costantino perdono popolarità e diffusione e diventano un elemento banale della mitologia athonita.

Τὸ ἄρθρο παρουσιάζει καὶ ἀναλύει ἕνα ἔγγραφο τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μονῆς Ζωγράφου, τὸ ὁποῖο μέχρι πρόσφατα ἐθεωρεῖτο γνήσιος χρυσόβουλλος λόγος τοῦ Σέρβου τσάρου Στεφάνου Δουσάν. Τὸ 1936 οἱ Ῥῶσοι βυζαντινολόγοι Ἀλέξανδρος Solovjev καὶ Βλαδήμιρος Mošin εἶχαν ἐκφράσει εὔλογες ὑποψίες ἀναφορικὰ μὲ τὴν αὐθεντικότητα τοῦ ἐν λόγῳ ἐγγράφου, ἀλλὰ στὰ 1982-2000 ὁ Λεωνίδας Μαυρομμάτης ὑποστήριξε ὅτι δὲν ὑπάρχει ἀποχρὼν λόγος νὰ ἀμφισβητηθεῖ ἡ γνησιότητά του. Ἡ λεπτομερὴς ἀνάλυση τῆς σλαβικῆς «ὑπογραφῆς τοῦ Δουσὰν», ἡ ὁποία συμπαραβάλλεται μὲ ἐννέα αὐθεντικὲς ὑπογραφὲς τοῦ ἰδίου ἡγεμόνα ἀπὸ
τὴν περίοδο 1331-1355, ἐγείρει ὑπόνοιες ὅτι, κατὰ πᾶσα πιθανότατα, πρότυπό της στάθηκε μιὰ γνήσια ὑπογραφὴ τοῦ Σέρβου τσάρου χρονολογούμενη τὸ 1348 καὶ σωζόμενη σὲ ἔγγραφο τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μονῆς Βατοπαιδίου. Ὡστόσο, ἡ πλαστότητα τοῦ ζωγραφίτικου ἐγγράφου ποὺ ἀποδίδεται στὸν Δουσάν ἀποδεικνύεται ἀναντίῤῥητα μόνο ὅταν τὸ κείμενό του συγκριθεῖ μὲ δύο ἀποδεδειγμένα πλαστὰ ζωγραφίτικα ἔγγραφα ποὺ παρουσιάζονται ὡς «χρυσόβουλλοι λόγοι τοῦ Ἰωάννου Ε΄ Παλαιολόγου» καὶ φέρουν χρονολογία 1342. Τὸ «χρυσόβουλλο τοῦ Δουσὰν» δανείζεται πλῆθος στοιχείων καὶ σὲ ὁρισμένα σημεῖα ἀντιγράφει κατὰ λέξη ἕνα ἀπὸ αὐτὰ τὰ πλαστογραφήματα. Τὸ σημαντικότερο, ὅμως, εἶναι ἡ διαπίστωση πὼς ὁ γραφέας τοῦ ἄλλου πλαστοῦ χρυσόβουλλου ποὺ ἀποδίδεται στὸν Ἰωάννη Ε΄, ἦταν ὁ ἴδιος ποὺ ἔγραψε τὸ ἑλληνικὸ κείμενο τοῦ ἐπικυρωτικοῦ «χρυσόβουλλου λόγου», τὸν ὁποῖο ὁ Σέρβος τσάρος φέρεται νὰ χορήγησε στὴν Ἱερὰ Μονὴ Ζωγράφου τὸν Ἀπρίλιο τοῦ 1346.

The article analyses 11 unknown 19th Slavic documents kept in the archives of the Athonite monastery of Vatopedi. They pertain to the spiritual relations between Vatopedi and the minor Bulgarian towns of Gabrovo, Drjanovo and Kilifarevo in the central section of the Balkan mountain range.
