CD-ROM

The advent of CD-ROM technology has made profound impact on library services with its unique features of large storage capacity and iterative search facility. The P K Kelkar Library of IIT Kanpur had started procuring CD-ROMs and other multimedia resources to overcome the ever growing need of space, as also to provide fast and iterative search facility to its user since 1990s. The purpose of this paper is to describe the processes involved in managing the CD-ROM collection at P. K. Kelkar Library.The paper discusses the importance of CD-ROM in relation to de-stressing library collection. It outlines the planning and processes involved in organizing CD-ROM collection on shelves and development of a user interface through open-source software, i.e., Winisis and GenisisWeb.

Aufgrund der Geschwindigkeit technologischer Entwicklungen, der zeitbedingten Probleme der Entmaterialisierung der Daten wie auch fehlender Strategien der Archivierung drohen – neben Datenbanken und den in Datenbanken enthaltenen Daten – auch die Werke angewandten Hypermedia-Designs (Laserdisc, Photo-CD, CD-I, CD-ROM und DVD-ROM) verloren zu gehen. Wie die Zunahme der Fehlermeldungen beweist, ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis die neuesten Computertechnologien keinen Zugriff mehr auf die hypermedialen Klassiker erlauben; unabhängig davon, ob die Multimedia-Anwendungen online oder offline angeboten werden. Im Folgenden soll an einigen Beispielen die vielschichtige Problematik des schleichenden Todes dieser für die Geschichte des digitalen und immateriellen kulturellen Erbes so wichtigen Werke angewandter interaktiver Kunst untersucht und dabei vor allem die Problematik des Sammelns in den Blick gerückt werden. Denn welchen Sinn hat eigentlich ein Sammeln dieser digitalen Relikte, wenn es keinen technologischen Zugriff mehr darauf gibt?

The transition from traditional graphics into computer graphics over the past decade has brought about a multitude of changes that graphics educators and other graphics professionals have had to address and incorporate. The ever evolving integration of computer aided design (CAD) in architecture and engineering have revolutionized the design and documentation process. In the graphic communication area, changes from layout and design to desktop publishing and interactive `new media' design for CD-ROM and Web distribution are but a few of the changes graphic educators have to keep up with. One problem with new technology is computer graphics encompasses several components and areas, and some of these areas are not able to progress into technology as quickly as others. Les hypermedias sont susceptibles de simuler les differents medias analogiques et d'etablir des series de liaisons directes entre differents types de documents numeriques. Des parcours virtuels sont ainsi definis et actualisables par interaction entre un utilisateur et le dispositif de consultation -- le plus souvent un micro-ordinateur. Propice aux multiples pratiques documentaires, certains auteurs recourent a l'hypermedia pour developper des parcours construits sur une dramaturgie qui releve d'une esthetique audiovisuelle.

unui feed-back privind metodele de regăsire folosite şi a
oferit date privind următoarele aspecte: categorii de utilizatori,
domenii de interes, evaluarea frecvenţei utilizării
diferitelor mijloace de informare, evaluarea relevanţei informaţiei
regăsite, evaluarea nevoii de asistenţă în regăsire,
identificarea utilizatorilor calculatoarelor, colectarea opiniilor
privind serviciile oferite, sugestii pentru servicii mai
bune. Concluziile separate pe categorii de utilizatori
(studenţi, cadre didactice, cercetători, altte categorii) relevă
preferinţa sporită pentru regăsirea online, a Internetului şi a
bazelor de date pe CD-ROM, mai ales în cazul studenţilor.

Developing countries, such as Brazil, are increasingly suffering from a severe shortage of health informatics specialists. Training of professionals in this field is expensive, and there is a limited supply of high-quality teaching resources available. We report on five initiatives of the Brazil/USA training program in health informatics. The main goal of this program is to train professionals in establishing medical informatics programs in Brazilian universities and major healthcare facilities.

This essay provides an insight into my current research project, “Hypermedia Communication Design & Museum.” It focuses on why it is so difficult to describe and analyze hypermedia applications that feature cultural themes. Since multimedia “silver
disc” classics tend to get lost, we must define criteria for analysis. Previous attempts to construct typologies have often failed because they have disregarded the complex grammar involved, the necessity to draw on methods from several disciplines, and
the need to take into account the underlying philosophy. This essay explains how the functions, contents, and forms of hypermedia can be analyzed. Such analysis uses the instruments of systemic information design, audiovisual rhetoric, and the typology of hypermedia dramaturgy. Discussion also reveals that design, navigation, and user behavior are influenced by the principles of “Scientia potentia est,” “Panta rhei,” and “Festina lente.” The complete results of this research project will be published in 2013/2014 in the shape of an analysis, methodology, and oeuvre catalog.

How do students use multimedia tools to support their learning during a gross anatomy dissection course? We investigated this question in the anatomic dissection course for first year medical students at the University of Munich (n=850) by giving all participating students access to an anatomical multimedia CD-ROM. The use of this multimedia learning tool was voluntary and it was not essential for the end-of-course examination.After the examination, two questionnaires (return rate first questionnaire n1=347, ∼41%; return rate second questionnaire n2=644, ∼76%) were given to the surveyed students with the following content: evaluation of the multimedia learning tool, details about the usage of different kinds of available learning media, and finally an evaluation of the media used for teaching during the course. Furthermore we collected personal data from participants such as age, gender and the score achieved in the examination.Classical textbooks and anatomical atlases were used by 84% of students for preparation. The multimedia learning tool was used by 34% as an additional media for learning. The multimedia learning tool was not used alone. The data showed differences with regard to gender and performance of students, but not relating to age. Students rated the computer-specific features, e.g. three-dimensional (3D) models, virtual simulations, and an interactive quiz module, as major reasons for using the multimedia learning tool.Our results show that medical students use anatomic multimedia learning tools primarily as an additional medium for learning, and thus lead to the conclusion that the main learning media are still textbooks and anatomic atlases.

La caracteristique majeure de l'hyperfiction reside dans le fait qu'une partie de l'enonciation de l'histoire est deleguee au destinataire du recit. Des lors, le spectateur face a son ecran devient par moments, lorsqu'il est sollicite, une sorte d'acteur qui indique ses choix au deroulement du recit. Dans ces conditions, plusieurs questions se posent quant a la structuration du recit interactif. Comment maintenir une progression et des rythmes dramatiques des lors qu'un spectateur en devient l'acteur pour en prendre ponctuellement le controle ? Comment l'interactivite peut-elle garantir la coherence du recit qui emerge de cette forme de delegation enonciative ? Unlike other stages of human development, early childhood is the critical stage that forms the foundation for children's' future wellbeing and learning ((UNICEF, 2001). Early Childhood Education helps a learner to develop skills, knowledge, personal competence and confidence and a sense of social responsibility. Information Communication and Technology in Early Childhood Education is significant as it supports and strengthens early childhood education practice. The present study is interested in assessing the integration of ICT particularly educational Compact Disc ROM as modern tool in Education. The study bases on the potentials brought by Educational Compact Disc. The researcher went through different literature on the potentials by linking them with the Constructive approach of learning. In the study it was found that the application of CD–ROMs was used more in language development, development of literacy skills as well as in the expansion of language vocabularies. However, changes in education were also seen that is from traditional mode of teaching into new model of teaching which is mostly supported by the Constructivism theory of learning. Thus, Educational CD-ROM as multimedia technologies is potential in creating high quality learning environments in early childhood education.
