Este artigo pretende mostrar até que ponto a génese e a vida do idioma caboverdiano estão ligadas ao fenómeno da globalização. Numa primeira parte, mostra-se, com base em argumentos lexicais, morfológicos e semânticos que o crioulo de Cabo Verde pode legitimamente ser considerado como uma língua afro-europeia, ou seja, fruto do encontro das culturas de dois continentes. Na segunda parte, examina-se a dinâmica actual da língua caboverdiana na República de Cabo Verde, assim como nas diversas comunidades da diáspora, espalhadas por três continentes (África, América e Europa). Em conclusão, salienta-se que o futuro e a sobrevivência do crioulo do Arquipélago dependerão sempre das relações que Cabo Verde souber manter com o mundo fora.

Capeverdean (CV) is the mother tongue of more than a million people living in, or
originating from, the archipelago of Cape Verde, situated about 500 km west of Dakar
(Senegal). As a Portuguese-based Creole, this language obviously has many Portuguesederived
items in its vocabulary, although there are often significant phonetic changes (see Quint 2000a: 53-139) such as:
CV obi  ‘to hear’ < Port. ouvir
CV nabidja ‘heifer’ < Port. novilha.
Nevertheless, not all CV words derive from Portuguese; indeed, some quite common CV
words can be traced back to diverse African languages, e.g.
CV djobi ‘to look at’ < Mandinka juubee.
CV djáki ‘bull calf’ < Wolof yëkk.
In this article, I examine the importance of this African stratum and explore what African
words and expressions in CV can tell us about the origins of this language and, more
generally, about the formation of Afro-European creoles.

Capeverdean (or Capeverdean Creole) is the mother tongue of the famous singer Cesária Évora and of more than a million people worldwide.
This book, one of the first of its kind in English, provides you with a rare and comprehensive insight into the language and culture of Cape Verde.
By following a series of lessons, which gradually increase in difficulty, you will be able to learn the basics of the Capeverdean as spoken on the island of Santiago (which is the most widely used), and also gain some useful knowledge about the varieties spoken on the other islands. Let’s Speak Capeverdean is aimed primarily at English speakers who want to learn this language, but it may also be useful to people from Cape Verde who already speak it but now live in an English-speaking country and who would like to be able to read and write it. The vocabulary lists and cultural information provide a good starting point for tourists visiting Cape Verde, as
well as those who are simply curious about the language and culture but are not able to commit much time to studying them.

Ce dictionnaire cap-verdien - français, le premier du genre, propose des traductions en langue française pour plus de 4.000 mots et 10.000 expressions courantes du cap-verdien moderne, langue maternelle de plus d'un million de personnes dans le monde.
Chaque mot cap-verdien est orthographié en orthographe standard, sa prononciation est systématiquement indiquée, et l'étymologie (portugaise ou africaine) est mentionnée pour plus de 90% des entrées. Un abrégé grammatical spécialement conçu pour des non-spécialistes permettra aux utilisateurs de se faire une idée des bases du fonctionnement de la langue. Le dialecte retenu est le créole de l'île de Santiago (appelé aussi badiais), parlé par plus de la moitié des Cap-Verdiens, et compris par l'écrasante majorité de la population. Un lexique du créole de l'île de Maio donne une idée des variantes régionales.
Ce dictionnaire est destiné à servir la communication entre Francophones et Cap-Verdiens. Les touristes et coopérants français auront désormais un moyen de communiquer plus efficacement avec les habitants de l'Archipel du Cap-Vert. Les plus de 40.000 Cap-Verdiens résidant en France, ainsi que les nombreuses communautés créoles cap-verdiennes d'Afrique de l'Ouest pourront ainsi accéder plus aisément au français à partir de leur langue maternelle. Enfin, l'existence de cet ouvrage permettra un enseignement plus efficace du français au Cap-Vert, pays membre de la francophonie.
La sortie de ce dictionnaire vient compléter le dictionnaire français - cap-verdien, déjà disponible aux éditions L'Harmattan. Une adaptation cap-verdien - portugais de cet ouvrage a été publiée par les éditions Verbalis à Lisbonne.

T he island-dwelling population that became &quot;Caho Verdean&quot; drew in part from a combination of continental Africans from, especially, the Atlan­ tic rim of West Africa-regions now part of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and the Gambia, as well as further inland (into Guinea, for example). The early peo­ ples who were (largely) kidnapped from the mainland and brought by Euro­ pean slave traders to the Cape Verdean archipelago included many Mandinga, as well as Mande-infl.uenced peoples such as Biafada, Cassanga, and Cocoli (a.k.a. Landuma), along with members of other groups. These Africans were largely brought as enslaved populations by Europeans most of whom, in tum, came from Portugal (which colonized nine of the previously uninhabited Caho Verde islands in the mid-15th century), though some were from Spain, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. I edited a special section of the journal, Mande Studies (vol. 16/17, 2015) dedicated to understanding a variety of issues relevant to the Cape Verde Islands.  In this short introduction to the collection, I provide a brief overview of each of the five essays: Isabel P. B. F6o Rodrigues, "Grammars of Faith for Unruly Speakers: Creolization and the Transmission of Portuguese in Cabo Verde"--boldly proposes a new paradigm for creolization studies that is destined to change the way linguistic anthropologists approach the formation of creole languages. Alma Gottlieb, "Crossing Religious Borders: Jews and Cabo Verdeans"--explores the conjoined Jewish-Cabo Verdean diaspora, discussing how ttris largely unknown yet historically significant dual diaspora is now being re-evaluated among contemporary Cabo Verdeans (both on and offthe islands) who have Jewish ancestry.
Elizabeth Challinor--"Cape Verdean Students in Northern Portugal Living with Contingency"--explores how the experiences of Cabo Verdean students in northern Portugal push us to stretch the boundaries of anthropological inquiry in analyzing how Cabo Verdeans are both included in and excluded from Portuguese society; along the way, she destabilizes traditional andytical dualities such as "student" and'laborer," "legal" and "illegal" migrant, and "cosmopolitan" and "local."
Wilson Trajano Filho--"On Colors and Flags in the Hinterland of Cape Verde's Santiago Island"--offers an arresting analysis of ritual parades of Cabo Verdean "tabanca" flags to the houses of their patron saints; Filho argues that the pageantry of these processions--which includes national flags and sports team flags of other countries, as well as syncretic banners mixing icons of global mass culture such as Michael Jackson and Bob Marley--constitutes an assertion by peasants who occupy lands that are seemingly remote from the centers of world power, that they are "coeval" with all of us in this world, and that present-day life can be pleasant, despite poverty and other material deprivations, thanks to the blessings of religious figures ("patron saints").
Gina Sanchez-Gibau--"Telling Our Story, Because No One Else WilL Cabo Verdean Transnational Identity Formation as Knowledge Production"--explores recent scholarship and situated standpoints produced by educated Cabo Verdeans with a vested interest in exploring Cabo Verdean transnational identity as a means of making their truths known and expanding awareness of the diasporic Cabo Verdean experience.

Collectively, these five essays offer a powerful argument for the centrality of the all-too-frequently ignored Cabo Verde islands and their global diaspora in any historical or contemporary discussion of migration and modernity.

Le capverdien (ou créole du Cap-Vert) est la langue maternelle de la chanteuse Cesária Évora et de plus d'un million de personnes dans le monde, dont au moins cinquante mille vivent en France métropolitaine.
Cet ouvrage, le premier du genre en langue française, fournit un accès privilégié et méthodique à l'idiome du Cap-Vert et à la culture qu'il véhicule.
Une suite de vingt-trois leçons de difficulté croissante permet d'acquérir progressivement les bases du capverdien moderne à partir du dialecte santiagais (parlé par la majorité de la population) et avec des ouvertures sur les autres variétés régionales. Des exercices corrigés, des notes de civilisation, des mémentos grammaticaux, des lexiques capverdien-français et français-capverdien ainsi que trois index viennent compléter l'ouvrage, qui permettra à toute personne intéressée de se doter d'un bagage solide sur la langue et la culture capverdiennes contemporaines.
Parlons capverdien s'adresse aux lecteurs de langue française désireux d'apprendre le créole, mais il pourra aussi être utilisé avec profit par les Capverdiens d'origine ou de naissance vivant en pays francophone et n'ayant qu'une connaissance orale de leur langue. Enfin, les lexiques et les notions de civilisation pourront constituer une première étape pour les simples curieux ou les voyageurs pressés, désireux de savoir quelque chose de la culture capverdienne sans avoir à trop s'investir.
