Cenotaphs

In 2019, we excavated a square shaped burial in the Hanui Valley, central Mongolia. This monument belongs to the Slab Grave Culture, but in terms of external and internal structure, it differs from the typical Slab Grave. Although we uncovered two separate burial pits during the excavation but there were no human remains in the both pits. A total of 20 sheep, 8 goats, 2 cows, and 2 horses were buried on the eastern ledge of the northern pit. However, in lieu of a human burial, a flat stone carved with ring, along with three sheep scapulae and ribs, a bow with arrows, another bone object, and turquoise beads were placed in the northern pit. The southern pit is smaller than the other, and has fewer finds. From this pit came a large, oblong stone carved with a circular ring, two sheep scapulae, a bone toggle, and a few bronze buttons.
These facts prove that during the Late Bronze Age, cenotaph monuments were occasionally constructed in Mongolia. In this ritual, a person was represented by a ring-carved stone paired with sheep scapulae and ribs. Based on the pit size, density of artifacts and number of animal offerings in the two pits, we hypothesize that the custom of building satellite graves – later an important feature of Xiongnu elite mortuary practice - was also formed during this time.  In an earlier article on the site of Bor Shoroonii Am site, suggested that this type of monument share design components that are ancestral to Xiongnu aristocratic tombs, such as stepped pits, wooden structures, and numerous animal offerings. Our new results suggest that the practice of satellite grave construction is an additional parallel between Slab Grave and the later Xiongnu culture.
It is worth mentioning that the bone tips with two nocks of bow  from the northern pit are the earliest known from the region. No similar find has been found among the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age material culture yet recovered by archaeologists. Thus, our discovery testifies to the development of a bow with pair nocks in the development of weapons of the Late Bronze Age nomads. The structure and material culture from this monument are unique, highlighting the cultural and ritual links between the Xiongnu and the Slab Grave cultures. We dated this cenotaph monument to 2562±21 BP (or ca. 803-592 cal. BCE) in Radiocarbon Accelerator at the University of Oxford. Generally this type of monument belongs to the 8th-5th centuries BCE, based on several other C14 dates of similar graves in Mongolia.

В Северо-Западном Причерноморье известны сотни скифских захоронений, при этом их большая часть была исследована в советское время. В настоящее время увеличение источников происходит крайне медленно. В этой связи публикация новых материалов представляется актуальной, поскольку имеет значение для изучения скифской культуры всего Северного Причерноморья. Материалы. В работе впервые публикуются данные, полученные в 2018 г. при исследовании скифского кургана № 10 группы Водовод у с. Глиное Слободзейского района на левобережье Нижнего Днестра. Материалы, полученные при исследовании публикуемого кургана, позволяют обратить внимание на целый ряд элементов погребального обряда и материальной культуры (сочетание основных подбоев и впускных ям под одной насыпью, практика сооружения кенотафов, деление пространства погребального сооружения на две зоны, помещение напутственных даров на перекрытие и др.). Некоторые вещевые находки свидетельствуют, что материальная культура скифов Северо-Западного Причерноморья испытывала заметное фракийское влияние. На основании кубковидного канфара и фибул фракийского типа курган и все погребения датируются третьей четвертью IV в. до н. э. Материалы из публикуемого кургана Глиное/Водовод 10 на левобережье Нижнего Днестра и указанные им аналогии из левобережного Попрутья, левобережного Подунавья и Дунай-Днестровского междуречья, демонстрируют, что скифская культура Северо-Западного Причерноморья обладает значительно большим единством, нежели это представлялось ранее.
Hundreds of Scythian graves are known in the Northwestern Black Sea region, and the bulk of them were investigated in Soviet times. Currently, the increase in scholarly sources is extremely slow. The publication of new materials seems relevant, in this regard, since it is important for further research of the Scythian culture across the entire Northern Black Sea region. For the first time, the work publishes data obtained in 2018 during the excavation of Scythian barrow 10 of the Vodovod (‘Sluiceway’) Group near Glinoe village, Slobodzeya District, on the left bank of the Lower Dniester. Data Analysis. The materials obtained during the examination of the mound are distinguished by a number of elements of funeral rites and material culture, such as a combination of main catacombs and secondary pits under one mound, practice of constructing cenotaphs, division of the space of the burial structure into two zones, placing farewell gifts on the overlap, etc. Some findings indicate that the Scythian material culture of the of the Northwestern Black Sea region was noticeably influenced by the Thracian one. The discovered cup-kanfaros and fibulae of the Thracian type date the mound and all burials to the second quarter of the 4th century BC. The materials from barrow Glinoe/Sluiceway 10 located on the left bank of the Lower
Dniester and their analogies from the left-bank Prut region, left-bank Danube region and Danube-Dniester interfluve show that the Scythian culture of the Northwestern Black Sea region is much more homogenous than it was believed before.

Die Realität der archäologischen Ausgrabung bewegt sich einerseits zwischen dem Gebot, alle Funde bestmöglich freizulegen
und zu dokumentieren sowie dem Vermögen des Ausgräbers und den Bedingungen vor Ort andererseits. Um
die Veränderungen bei der Freilegung archäologischer Funde zu beschreiben wird zu Beginn der Terminus „Archäologozönose“
eingeführt, worunter man all diejenigen Prozesse verstehen kann, die bei der Freilegung von Befunden
durch den Ausgräber ausgelöst werden.
Im Weiteren werden rein hermeneutisch drei Komplexe aus dem kupferzeitlichen Gräberfeld von Varna I betrachtet,
bei deren Freilegung zunächst nur wenige Spuren dokumentiert wurden, die zur Interpretation dieser ungewöhnlichen
Deponierungen beitragen können. Es handelt sich um bestattete Figuren aus organischem Material, deren Gesichter
aus Ton modelliert und anschließend mit sehr reichem, goldenem Gesichtsschmuck ausgestattet wurden. Neuere Untersuchungen
belegen, dass die Körper unmittelbar vor der Bestattung modelliert und anschließend mit den reichen
Beigaben in gleicher Art und Weise wie die übrigen Skelettgräber „bestattet“ wurden. Eine kritische Überprüfung aller
Komplexe des Varnaer Bestattungsplatzes zeigt, dass es sich bei den drei Komplexen 2, 3 und 15 mit Gesichtsdarstellungen
sowie dem sehr reichen Komplex 36 mit goldenen Widder-/Steinbock-Applikationen und wenigen weiteren Komplexen
um skelettlose Deponierungen handelt. Der Vergleich der Schmuckausstattung und der Beigaben der tönernen
Gesichter mit den gleichzeitigen Bestattungen zeigt große Unterschiede auf. Ausgehend von der Kleinplastik, die den
Typus der Varna-Gesichter tausendfach wiederholt, scheint es sich um weibliche Figuren zu handeln. Die ebenfalls an
der Kleinplastik zu beobachtende Verdopplung von Körperteilen, wie Augen, des ganzen Gesichtes oder des Schamdreiecks,
deutet auf eine übernatürliche Auffassung der Figuren hin. Auch an figürlichen Gefäßen und an gefäßtragenden
Figuren ist der spezifische Schmuck der Gesichter aus Varna zu beobachten. Damit stellt sich die Frage, was in
diesen Gefäßen aufbewahrt wurde, um über den Gefäßinhalt der Deutung der Figuren näherzukommen.

The article for the first time publishes the Scythian barrow 17 of the "Sluiceway" group near Glinoe village, Slobodzeya district, on the left bank of the Lower Dniester. This mound did not contain a burial structure and was surrounded by a ditch. Similar Scythian complexes are known throughout the Northern Black Sea region, but they are not numerous everywhere (the left bank of the Lower Danube, the left bank of the Lower Dniester, and the NorthWest Azov region). The analysis of the available information shows that some of these barrows could be used as symbolic burials-cenotaphs. At the same time, other similar structures, obviously, were "public" cult areas for holding commemorative feasts. These areas were located close to barrows containing Scythian graves.
