Ceramic Art

How familiar are South Africa's twenty-first century ceramists with the history of ceramics of their country? Do they know and understand the cultural, social, political, economic and educational circumstances that shaped the rise and growth of the initial studio potter community and the later rise of ceramists? Do they have insight into how the pioneers and their successors sought to negotiate and express their identities via studio pottery and ceramics? Do they understand that what they produce now will someday in the future be measured against what was produced in the past? And with that I do not speak of the 'look' but of the nature, intent and ethos of oeuvres.

"Made in China (Çin Malı)" ibaresi özellikle endüstriyel üretim alanında düşük
kaliteli ve imitasyon ürün algısı yaratır. Ancak, Çin'deki bütün sektörler için bunun geçerli olduğunu söylemek doğru olmaz. Çin, zanaat ürünleri özellikle, porselen sektörü ile bugün hala bir numaralı üretici konumundadır. Avrupa'dan yüzyıllar önce zarafet ve ustalık göstergesi, bu yarı geçirgen "sihrin" formülünü bulmuş ve "beyaz altın" adıyla anılmasını sağlamıştır. Elbette bu durumun, Çin'deki muazzam kaolin kaynakları ile paralelliği yadsınamaz. Ancak bu çalışma kapsamında irdelenmek istenen -"beyaz altın" benzetmesi üzerinden- seramik ve simya ilişkisidir.
Genel olarak bir inanç sistemi ya da öğreti bütününü, değişen koşullara uyarlama eğilimi şeklinde tanımlanan, modernizmin, her ne kadar 19. yüzyılın başlarında Avrupa'da doğduğu kabul edilse de, bu düşünce yapısının izlerini daha önceki dönemlerde de görmek mümkündür. Modernizm ya da modern olmak, tarihsel bir dönemi ya da coğrafi açıdan batıyı işaret eden bir konumu değil; bir düşünce yapısını vurgulamaktadır. Modernizm eleştirisi yapan düşünürlerin ortak noktaları zamansallık sorunu üzerinde şekillenir. Modern olmak arkaik ve yerleşmiş geçmişe çekilen sınır olarak okunabilir ve temelinde tersinmez bir zaman anlayışı vardır.
Bu görüş bağlamında simya, ön kimya olarak değerlendirilir ve bugünkü modern
kimyanın ilkel bir safhası olarak düşünülür. Oysa simya, bundan çok daha fazlasıdır. Eski doğa bilimlerinden olan simya gelişerek değil, aksine bozularak ampirik bir bilim olan kimyaya dönüşmüştür.
Simyayı, ilk kimya olarak sınırlandıran modern anlayış, kıyaslanamaz ve tamamen birbirinden farklı iki bakış açısını, hiyerarşik olarak sıralamıştır. Benzer ilişkiyi sanat ve zanaat arasında da kurmak mümkündür. Oysa, seramik disiplini ile ilgili etkinliklerin alt kümesi olarak görülen zanaat, zihin ile beden birlikteliğini güncel sanat anlayışa kıyasla daha çok muhafaza etmiştir. Tıpkı altın gibi seramiğin de kökeni ile olan ilişkisi kopmamıştır. Çünkü seramik üretiminde, süreç ve teknik hala yadsınamaz biçimde önemlidir. Kökene yabancılaşmama, seramiği modern bakış açısıyla hiçbir zaman tam anlamıyla çağdaş sanatlar çerçevesine yerleştiremez ve zanaat
yaftasından kurtaramaz.
Çalışma kapsamında, seramik malzemenin modern çağa özgü kimlik bunalımı alternatif bir eksenden okunmaya ve irrasyonel alana itilen simya etkinliği ile ilişkilendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Brütalizm 1950-1970 yılları arasında görülen bir mimari stildir. Brütalist yapılar, betondan
yapılmış, kütlesel, kale benzeri, geometrik, iç yapısı gizlenmemiş, süsten uzak, minimalist
yapılardır; “Ham” kelimesiyle açıklanabilecek malzeme kullanımı en genel özelliğidir. Bu tip bir
yapılar çoğu zaman, heykelsi formları çağrıştırmakta olup bu durumuyla plastik sanatlara da
yakınlaşmaktadır. Plastik sanat alanlarından birisi olan seramik sanatında da mimari yapılarda
görülen brütalist etkiden söz etmek mümkün olabilir. Bu makale kapsamında, günümüz seramik
sanatında, brütalist etkiden bahsetmenin mümkün olup olmayacağı tartışılacaktır. Bunun için
bazı sanatçıların eserleri brütalist bir gözlükle yeniden incelenerek, seramik sanatı için brütalist
etkinin ne olduğu, özelliklerinin neler olabileceği irdelenecek ve bu yolla bir bakış açısı ya da
bir değerlendirme kriteri geliştirmeye çalışılacaktır.

Çok eski zamanlardan beri pişmiş topraktan oluşan kullanım araçları neredeyse bütün kültürlerde görülmektedir. İhtiyaçtan doğmuş denebilecek seramik sanatı günümüzde işlevselliği yanında daha çok plastik değer veya kavramsal öge olarak kullanılmakta, yeni bir kimliğe bürünmektedir. Aynı şekilde örmeciliğin de insanoğlunun örtünme ihtiyacı hissedildiği zamanda başladığı ve günümüze kadar toplumların zevk ve
ihtiyaçlarına cevap verecek şekilde geliştiği söylenebilir.

Örgü öğrenilmesi kolay bir tekniktir. Ailede nesilden nesile öğretilmesi yaygındır. Herkes, muhakkak örgü ören birini tanır. İster bir arkadaş, ister bir aile yakını, ister bir komşu... Örgü cana yakın, insani ve etkisi geniş bir alana sahiptir. Dünyanın çeşitli kültürlerinde farklı biçimlerde örnekleri görülebilir. Japon kültüründe giderek popülerleşen ‘amigurumi’ de bu örneklerden biridir. Amigurumi, Japonca örgü anlamına gelen ‘Ami’ kelimesiyle, doldurulmuş canlı anlamına gelen ‘Nuigurumi’
kelimelerinin birleşiminden doğmuştur. Genelde karşılaştığımız örnekleri antropomorfik (insan biçimci) özellikler taşıyan oyuncaklardır. Aslında, çok eski kökenlere dayanmayan amigurumi 1950'lerden beri yavaş yavaş büyüyerek bir fenomen olmuştur. İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın sonlarında Hiroşima-Nagazaki felaketleri ve savaşın kaybedilmesiyle Japon kültürü değişime uğramış; bütün yaşananlara ve hayatın
acımasızlığına karşı bir kaçınma olarak yeni bir sevimlilik (kawaii) kültürü oluşmuştur.

1960'lara gelindiğinde Japonya'nın gücünü yeniden kazanmaya baslamasıyla ‘kawaii’ kültürü ve amigurumi de giderek dünya popüler kültürünün bir parçası haline gelmiştir.

Bu çalışmada, seramik sanatının yeni anlatımlar ve yeni arayışlar içinde amigurumi ile birleştirilmesi ve iki alanda da bir yenilik ortaya konması amaçlanmıştır. Tez kapsamında örgü ve seramiği birleştirebilecek bir teknikle ilk denemeler yapılmış,
Anadolu Üniversitesi Eğitim Karikatürleri Müzesi'nde bir sergi açılmış ve alınan tepkilere göre sanat açısından da ilgili çekici, özgün ve başarılı bulunduğu tespit edilmiştir. Kullanılan tekniğe uygun formlar, dokular, malzeme ve seramik pişirim teknikleri denenerek kullanılan tekniğin idealleştirilebilmesi için ilk adımlar atılmıştır. Amigurumi örnekleri ve farklı örgü teknikleri araştırılmıştır. Seramik malzemenin, farklı bir malzemeyle birlikteliği denenirken bu tarz uygulamalara sahip sanatçıların
çalışmalarından örnekler değerlendirilip çalışmayı desteklemek adına sunulmuştur.

19. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde keşfedilen ve özellikle Helenistik dönem pişmiş toprak heykelcik- leri ile ün kazanmış Tanagra kenti, antik dönem koroplastik sanatının en önemli merkezle- rindendir. Öyle ki bugünkü Yunanistan’ın sınırları içerisinde yer alan şehirde 8000’den fazla mezar bulunmuş ve sadece mezar armağanı olarak bırakılan tanagraların sayısı ve çeşitliliği bile kenti bu anlamda birinci sıraya yerleştirmeye yetmiştir.
Elde edilen arkeolojik verilere göre bu heykelciklerin; kutsal alan ya da mezar adağı, oyuncak veya şahsi mülklerdeki kült alanı nesnesi gibi işlevlere sahip olduğu düşünülmektedir. Çoğunlukla kalıplama yoluyla üretilmiş olan bu figürinlerin biçimsel değeri, günümüzde sıklıkla karşılaştığımız dekoratif porselen bibloları çağrıştırmaktadır. Antik dönemden bugüne biçim- sel özelliklerin korunmuş olması, söz konusu heykelciklerin içeriğinde bir eksen kayması ya- şanmış olduğu gerçeğini değiştirmemektedir. Birçok plastik öğede olduğu gibi tanagraların da ritüel amaçlı kullanımı, estetik boyuta taşınmış kısacası bu seramik heykelcikler dünden bugüne bir dönüşüm süreci yaşamışlardır. Bahsi geçen bu süreç; ilkellerdeki “temsil etme” kavramının içerik değiştirerek zihinsel boyuta taşınması ya da modern insanın rasyonel bakış öğretisinden çıkamaması bu sebeple metafizik ve fizik dünyayı birbirinden ayrı konumlandırarak gerçeği pozitif dünya ile ilişkilendirmesi şeklinde okunabilir.
Bu çalışma kapsamında; “modern” insan ve “ilkel” insan arasındaki gerçeklik ve bu gerçekliği algılama/sınıflandırma farkları irdelenmeye çalışılacak; “kendisinden” den, metafora dönüşüm süreci; Tanagra heykelcikleri ve günümüz seramik figürinleri üzerinden incelenecek ve bu inceleme Lucien Lévy-Bruhl okuması ile ilişkilendirilecektir.

The role of material in the act of making art takes the artist to some research about the material. Artist who use every object in the nature as a tool when transferring his/her expression to viewers, handles and turns the objects that s/he founds or ready to handle materials in accordance with the theme of his/her design and tries to make them compatible and conforming for his/her purpose, aim and interpretation. Manufacturing the ready to handle objects by handwork or use of industrial methods by only changing the material is an artistic stance adopted by many artists from past to present. Artists have demonstrated their reaction and respond against the previous understanding of art, technology and consumption through methods such as exhibiting daily objects as they are, imitating them simply by use of plastic materials or re-manufacturing them with a hyper-realistic reaction. The importance of material is great and high in these attitudes. Ceramic clay which is the material gives its name to Ceramic Art has become one of the most important materials on which scientists and artists work intensely together with the contributions of technology and industry in this direction. The purpose of artist in processing his/her clay different from scientists is to strengthen the artistic expression rather than to achieve industrial excellence. The artist of the artwork researches, chooses or produces the material appropriate for his/her artwork that s/he had designed or benefits from the blessings of the material that s/he founds and shapes his/her opinion, idea or artwork according to the structure of the material in his/her hand. The unique and specific material production idea has been supported in this study which is about clay manufacturing for 355 personal ceramic designs with artistic purposes and the study is presented after making assessments of personal design and implementation samples technically and artistically.

Uzakdoğu, seramiğin tarihsel gelişiminde ilklerin başlangıcı olarak görülmektedir. Farklı biçimlendirme yöntemlerinden sırlama ve fırınlama tekniklerine kadar birçok alanda büyük keşifler bulunmaktadır. Bunlar, kültürel etkileşimle başta batı olmak üzere tüm dünyaya yayılmıştır. Uzakdoğu pişirim tekniklerinden biri olan Raku, 16. yy. da Japonya’da ortaya çıkmıştır. Kelime anlamı uyum ve mutluluk olan Raku, Japon çömlekçiliğin bir türüdür ve hem pişirim yöntemine hem de pişirilen kaplara verilen isimdir. Raku tekniği, seremonilerde kullanılmak için üretilen çay kâselerinde uygulanmıştır. Her biri elle şekillendirilen, gözenekli ve sırlı bu çay kâseleri, odun yakıtlı fırın içerisinde düşük sıcaklıkta pişirildikten sonra fırından çıkarılır, suya atılır veya açık havada soğuması sağlanırdı. Bu teknik 20. yy. da batıda Bernard Leach ve Paul Soldner sayesinde tanınarak popülerliği artmış, dünyadaki birçok seramik sanatçısı tarafından kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Doğudakinin aksine bu teknik, batıdaki sanatçılar tarafından farklı yöntemlerle ve amaçlarla kullanılmıştır. Daha çok sanatsal formlar üretmeye başlayan sanatçılar, elektrikli ve gazlı fırınlar kullanarak özel sır reçeteleri üretmişlerdir. Geleneksel Raku pişirimi geliştirilerek, fırından çıkan formlar kâğıt, talaş veya vb. organik maddelerin içinde bulunduğu oksijensiz bir ortama konarak sırın içerisinde bulunan metal oksitlerin indirgen ortamda (karbonmoniksitli ortamda) gelişimi sağlanmıştır. Sanatçılar bu tekniğin hem artistik hem de deneysel taraflarından yararlanarak ürettikleri formlara estetik değer katmayı hedeflemişlerdir. Bu çalışmada, Raku tekniğini günümüzde kullanan çağdaş seramik sanatçıları araştırılacak ve sanatçıların eserleri üzerinden bu tekniğin değişimi ve gelişimi incelenecektir.-----

Raku firing techniques, one of the Far East, has emerged in the 16th Century in Japan. The meaning of the word harmony and happiness, which is Raku, a Japanese pottery is a type of firing method is the name given to both firing method and firing pots. Raku technique was applied to the tea bowl is produced for use in ceremonies. Each handshaped, porous and glazed bowls of tea, then cooked in wood-fired kiln at a low temperature is removed from the kiln, was thrown into the water or was provided in the open air to cool. This technique gained popularity in the West through Bernard Leach and Paul soldner, thanks for the recognition, and have been used by many ceramic artists in the world. Unlike the East, this technique is used with different
methods and purposes by western artists. Artists started to produce more artistic forms, which has electric and gas kiln manufactured by using special glaze recipes. Developing traditional Raku firing, the forms from the kiln, paper, sawdust, or etc. organic substances containing oxygen-free an environment as well as the oxides of the metal placed in a reductive environment (carbon monoxide in the environment) for the development was provided. This technique is both experimental and artistic side by taking advantage of the artists they produce are aimed at adding value to aesthetic forms. In this study, Raku technique will explore contemporary ceramic artists use today and their works will be examined this technique through exchange and development.

The present study focuses on the recycling of marble waste, generated by the marble industry for producing transparent stoneware glazes. The marble waste came from a marble-cutting plant located in Afyon-Iscehisar, Turkey. Ceramic stoneware glazes containing up to 40 wt% waste were prepared. The stabilized glaze slurries were applied onto stoneware tiles, which were sintered at 1000 °C. Five different glaze mixtures containing marble waste were prepared and evaluated for firing color, water emission, and thermal behavior. Microstructural evolution was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the marble waste can be used in transparent stoneware glaze production , resulting in a new possibility for recycling this waste and conserving natural resources. After 20 wt% waste addition, development of opaque glaze surface texture occurred because of high calcium oxide incorporation to the system.

Ceramics, has progressed from past to present in a movement in terms of art and technology. In the light of the information  have gained, diversity has increased and new attempts have been made to overcome limitations of the ceramics. In this artwork report, sintering studies has carried out with the use of rice husk as quartz in ceramic structures. Raw material is the  material used for producing products or goods. Quartz is a self-contained ceramic raw material. Rice husk ash has shown as an alternative raw material to quartz, and it has tried to contribute to the diversity of ceramic raw materials.
Quartz, one of the raw materials used in ceramic structure  and glaze prescriptions, is a crystal form of silica. Quartz is a mineral and its chemical structure consists of silicon and oxygen. Quartz can be found in nature in crystal and amorphous form. Quartz in ceramic  prescriptions; It facilitates the drying of the buildings, controls the downsizing, provides whiteness and increases the resistance to heat. It prevents the formation of glaze cracks by ensuring good adhesion of ceramics and glaze. Rice husk can be converted into amorphous, fine-grained silica after calcination. Silica in the rice husk ash has the same essence as the crystalline state of the quartz silica, which is a ceramic raw material.
Because of the high amount of silica in the content of the rice husk ash, it is thought that instead of the quartz which is obtained from the rocks, rice husk ash can be use in sinter structure prescriptions.
In this study, the rice husks cause stacks in the nature has transformed into quartz. Rice husk ash transformed into quartz has been added to the prescriptions at various ratios. The possibilities of obtaining and using the rice husk have been investigated.

No doubt, Nigeria is blessed with wealth. Ironically, this wealth has become an illusion to the teeming majority of Nigerians and cannot be felt amongst the common people on the street due to inhuman, selfish and corrupt to further prove that ceramics is not limited to just utilitarian purposes. The conceptual ceramic art work is a metaphor of the uncaring treatment meted out to the Niger-Delta area of Nigeria where the wealth of the country is was employed in voice to the fact that ceramics has no limitations as it can be expressive to contribute to national societal debate. Dikotomik düşüncenin katı perspektifi birbirine zıt kavramlar yaratır. Birbirinden
ayrı konumlandırılan bu kavramlar hareketsiz görülür ve aralarındaki akışkanlık ya da ilişki kabiliyeti göz ardı edilir. Dikotomileri, kutsal-dindışı; metafizik-fizik; soyut-somut; beden-zihin; sanat-zanaat; geçmiş-gelecek; eril-dişil; geleneksel-çağdaş; fonksiyon-estetik olarak çeşitlendirmek mümkündür ki bu kutuplar seramik sanatının güncel problemlerini de oluşturmaktadır.
Öte yandan Ursula Le Guin, George Orr ve William Haber isimli iki zıt karakter
üzerinden şekillenen The Lathe of Heaven (1971) / Rüyanın Öte Yakası (2011) adlı
romanında, bu tip bir yabancılaşma sorununu ortaya koyar. Temel olarak, George Orr
gerçekliği gördüğü rüyalar vasıtasıyla yeniden düzenleme yeteneğine sahip ancak ona
bahsedilmiş bu hediye sebebiyle acı çeken ve tedavi olmak isteyen bir hastadır. William
Haber ise Orr'u özgür kılmak yerine onun rüyalarını kontrol etmeyi seçen ve bu sayede
ütopya kurmaya çalışan bir psikiyatri uzmanıdır.
Bu çalışma kapsamında, seramik sanatı için bir kimlik veya sınıflandırma sorunu
yaratan dikotomik yaklaşım ve zıt kavramlar arasındaki gerginlik, adı geçen romandaki
kurgusal karakterler üzerinden yaratılan metafor ve yazarın diyalog fikri bağlamında
incelenmeye çalışılmış ve bu bakış açısına yaklaşan malzeme tabanlı sanat çalışmaları
irdelenmiştir.

Este artigo, que relata parte de uma pesquisa de mestrado situada no âmbito interdisciplinar (POMBO, 2005), buscando a confluência de saberes das áreas de Humanas, tem como intuito abordar a memória cerâmica no que diz respeito às relações entre a história do ateliê e modos de subjetivação.  Nosso interesse deriva do fato de tanto a referida arte como o espaço de trabalho do artista ceramista possuírem poucos – podemos até dizer raros – registros formais academicamente reconhecidos. Além disso, cabe destacar especialmente que a memória integrada (NORA, 1993) desvincula a memória do passado da prática presente e, portanto, desconsidera seus dobramentos, ou seja, a escrita de si, as marcas dos modos de subjetivação do sujeito ceramista. Objetiva-se, em decorrência, refletir sobre o surgimento dos ateliês, descrever e explorar sua influência no campo da cerâmica e seus desdobramentos com/para o artista. Para isso, constrói-se um aporte teórico com base na história (NORA, 1993; WATSON, 2008; GREFFE, 2013), na sociologia (ROSE, 2001; SENNETT, 2008), na arte (MASCELANI, 2009; SALLES, 2011), na filosofia (FOUCAULT, 1986, 1998, 2004, 2008; DELEUZE; GUATTARI, 1995) e na psicanálise (LACAN, 2003). A seu turno, busca-se apoio metodológico de cunho descritivo e exploratório (LANKSHEAR; KNOBEL, 2004) em textos produzidos sobre a temática desde a década de oitenta aos dias atuais. Pretende-se, com este trabalho, contribuir para os estudos culturais, históricos e artísticos, bem como incitar diálogos inter/multi/transdisciplinares, deixando em evidência que, como uma das linguagens mais antigas, a cerâmica e o seu espaço são parte do sujeito e de sua história. Espera-se, ainda, que este trabalho venha a motivar outros artistas e ceramistas a iniciarem uma relação íntima com a escrita (de si) e, dessa forma, a deixarem marcas, para além do barro, na história e na contemporaneidade.

This article which reports part of a post-graduation research carried out under an interdisciplinary scope (POMBO, 2005), searching the confluence of knowledge in the area Humanities, aims at approaching ceramics memory from the perspective of the relationships the history of the studio and modes of subjectivation. Our interest derives from the fact that both the aforementioned art and the workspace of the artist ceramist have few – we could definitely say rare – formal academically recognized records. Besides that, it deserves noting that integrated memory (NORA, 1993) separates the memory of the past from the current practice and, thus, disregards its folds, that is, the writing of the self, the marks of the modes of subjectivation of the ceramist subject. The objective, consequently, is to reflect about the emergence of studios, describe and explore their influence in the field of ceramics and their unfoldings with/for the artist. In order to achieve that, the theoretical body is built based on history (NORA, 1993; WATSON, 2008; GREFFE, 2013), sociology (ROSE, 2001; SENNETT, 2008), arts (MASCELANI, 2009; SALLES, 2011), philosophy (FOUCAULT, 1986, 1998, 2004, 2008; DELEUZE & GUATTARI, 1995) and psychoanalysis (LACAN, 2003). Methodologically, using a descriptive and exploratory approach (LANKSHEAR; KNOBEL, 2004), it stems from texts on the theme written from the 1980’s to current days. This study intends to contribute to cultural, historical and artistic studies, as well as to encourage inter/multi/transdisciplinary dialogues that highlight that, as one of the oldest languages, ceramics and its space are part of the subject and his/her history. It also expects to motivate other artists and potters to establish an intimate relationship with the writing of selves and leave their marks, beyond those in clay, in history and contemporaneity.

Fabrikalar sadece insanların çalıştığı yerler değil, aynı zamanda etraflarındaki kültürü şekillendiren unsurlardır. Bunu, çalışanlarını yönlendirdiği çalışma şekilleriyle yada ürettikleri ürünlerin estetik değerleri ile etrafındaki toplumu şekillendirerek gerçekleştirir. Porselen fabrikaları da bu tanımın dışında değillerdir.
Uzun bir süre porselen üretim teknolojisi Avrupa için bir gizemdi.  Avrupada porselen üretimi denemeleri ilk olarak daha düşük dereceli olan yumuşak porselen ile sonuçlanmıştır. 16 yy’da Francesco I de’ Medici’ nin himayesindeki atölyelerde, Floransa’ da üretilmiştir. Yüsek dereceli avrupadaki ilk  porselen, Saxonya’daki Meissen fabrikalarında 1710’da Johann Friedrich Böttger ve Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhaus tarafından bulunmuştur. İngiliz bone china kili Josiah Spode tarafından 19.yy başlarında mükemmelleştirilmiştir.

Projesi iki parçadan oluşmaktadır: “Bastards” (Piçler) fabrikalardan ödünç alınıp işlenmiş, artık  istenmeyen  modası  geçmiş  detaylardan  oluşurken,  “Orphans”  (Yetimler)  terk  edilmiş fabrikalarda bulunan kalıplarla oluşturulmuştur. Güvenle söylenebilir ki Bastards hayatta kalmak için olan değişimi temsil eden parçalarken Orphans, parçaları sonu gösteren fiziksel kayıtlardır.
Terk  edilmiş  bir  porselen  fabrikasında  sadece  içi  boş  bırakılmış  bir  bina  değildir,  aynı zamanda bir zamanlar övülen ve ulaşılmaya çalışılan porselen teknolojisinin ve ülkelerin gurur duydukları tasarımların sonudur. The article aims to present the results of the analysis of eight Neolithic ceramic figurines from the Lengyel culture settlement Těšetice-Kyjovice – Sutny, Czech Republic. We indicated the possibilities for acquiring analytical data, although destructive methods were unacceptable. We included methods neglected to date, but widely available in the common archaeological laboratory. Information on the composition of the ceramic matrix, the provenance of inclusions, the techniques used for shaping, firing, operating and discarding are all of key importance for advancing the discussion on the nterpretational potential of ceramic anthropomorphic figurines from typological and religionist discourses to analytically-focused discussions supported by hard data. ABSTRACT This essay reviews the professional career and artwork of Felicia Adepelu, a master potter from Igbara-Odo in the Yoruba region of Southwestern Nigeria. Pottery making is an ancient tradition in many cultures. In Africa where it connects with the secular and sacred traditions of various societies, women have the exclusive preserve of making traditional, domestic and religious pottery to meet the needs of the people. In Nigeria, eminent traditions of pottery making can be found among Gwari peoples of the Federal Capital Territory, Yoruba in Ilorin, Igbo in Afikpo, Ogbu and Inyi, and Hausa in Zaria. This broad spread reflects the diversity of indigenous craft industries among the sprawling ethnic groups of Nigeria. Whereas some cultures such as Abeokuta and Osogbo are renowned for cloth dyeing and their textile industries, Awka in southeastern Nigeria is home to a great blacksmithing tradition and brass smithing is popular in Bida. Likewise, specific regions of the country are famous centers of pottery production. Igbara-Odo in the Southwestern region of Yorubaland is a major site of pottery practices and is therefore selected for this study. The following analysis evaluates Adepelu’s work in a context where some aspects of indigenous cultural heritage, including pottery, currently face imminent extinction because of a disjunction between older generations of potters and descendants who marginalize inherited craft.

The present study focuses on the recycling of marble waste, generated by the marble industry for producing transparent stoneware glazes. The marble waste came from a marble-cutting plant located in Afyon-Iscehisar, Turkey. Ceramic stoneware glazes containing up to 40 wt% waste were prepared. The stabilized glaze slurries were applied onto stoneware tiles, which were sintered at 1000 °C. Five different glaze mixtures containing marble waste were prepared and evaluated for firing color, water emission, and thermal behavior. Microstructural evolution was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the marble waste can be used in transparent stoneware glaze production, resulting in a new possibility for recycling this waste and conserving natural resources. After 20 wt% waste addition, development of opaque glaze surface texture occurred because of high calcium oxide incorporation to the system.

Phosphors have great potential in several applications for devices and luminous paints and have been widely studied. They are a kind of energy storing material that can absorb both ultraviolet (UV) and visible lights from the sunlight and gradually release the energy in the dark at a certain wavelength. A phosphorescent material, such as the ZnS matrix, has been well known as a long lasting phosphor but did not show sufficient brightness and long phosphorescent behaviour. As is known, strontium aluminates doped with divalent europium ions possess high quantum efficiency, long phosphorescence persistence and good stability, indicating their good practical prospects.
