The article discusses the previously unknown set of drawings by Joseph Simon Kurowski, a painter who specialized in portraying personalities of the Great Emigration. Discovered in storage at the Department of Manuscripts of the National Library, albums belonging to Zofia Ossolińska (née Chodkievicz) contain a collection of 24 drawings including satirical images of November insurgents (including Izydor Sobański, Aleksander and Edward Jełowicki, Anton Wodziński, General Józef Bem and General Henryk Dembinski, Edward Rottermund, Walenty Krosnowski, and Leonard Rettel). Created during the years 1835-1839, these works document their lives outside their country. The collection also includes three self-portraits of the artist, who was himself a participant in the Polish-Russian War of 1830-31. The most interesting items in the collection are, however, caricatures of Frederic Chopin. Based on comparative and stylistic analysis, we have managed to establish their proper attribution. The author of the humorous portraits was the pianist Józef Kurowski, and not, as previously assumed, Countess Ossolinska née Jablonowska. The article also discusses the original version, never before published and hitherto unknown to Chopin experts, of the caricature Chopin Toasting from 1837.

This thesis focuses on a particular stylistic period of Frederic Chopin. The 1840s show an important evolution of Chopin’s musical language and correspond to an aesthetic turning point, characterized by a difficult historical and biographical context. All along our research, we will try to build a transversal definition of Chopin’s last style by highlighting the recurrent characteristics of this period. In this purpose, a corpus of twenty-two works will be analyzed through several levels (traditional and formal, semiotic, narrative and thymic), to grasp all the issues of the last period of the polish composer.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à une période stylistique particulière du compositeur Frédéric Chopin. Les années 1840 manifestent une évolution importante dans son langage musical et correspondent à un tournant esthétique marqué par un contexte historique et biographique difficile. Tout au long de ce travail, nous allons tenter d’ériger une définition transversale du « dernier style » de Chopin, en recherchant les éléments caractéristiques récurrents de cette période. Dans ce but, un corpus de vingt-deux oeuvres musicales sera analysé selon plusieurs niveaux (traditionnel et formel, sémiotique, narratif et thymique) afin de saisir tous les enjeux de la dernière période du compositeur polonais.

Musical narratology is an important item to highlight and understand the narrative strategies of musical works by the study of the concatenation of the expressive unities it contains. In the 19th century, the narrative strategy is often built as a “path which leads the listener from dysphoric elements till the transcendental level (euphoric) through several steps […]. This itinerary often corresponds to the coming-of-age novel or imaginary or initiatory journey […]” (Grabocz, 2009, p. 33). This is also possible in music by the choice of the protagonists, their relationships and their evolution into the musical piece.
In our thesis, which focuses on Chopin’s last style, we study 21 works of the 1840’s to reach a definition of this late stylistic period. Among our corpus, the Fantasy op. 49 in F minor is particularly interesting. In fact, this piece was rather badly received by the contemporary critics, considering “a lack of unity and cohesion” according to Lenz while Schumann found it “full of genius traits, although the whole hasn’t felt to have being bound by a formal harmonious framework”.
However, we consider that this work is a very good illustration of a real mastery of the formal construction and the narrative strategy proposed by Chopin and revealed by the narrative analysis. Composed in the beginnings of the 40’s, two themes serve as a basis of all the progression: the first is dramatic and more and more powerful all along its repetitions which put us deeper into the dramaturgy. The second is more transitional, in an improvised style and presents two kinds of appearance, totally opposite, which carries the auditor into two different atmospheres. The interactions between these two protagonists will build the “plot” of the piece, anchored in this romantic aesthetic, as we will try to show it in our presentation.
This kind of narrative strategy will also be compared with other works of our corpus which present the same kind of strategy but also totally contrary, like the Ballade op. 52 in f minor whose analysis in our forthcoming paper "La Ballade op. 52: une « épopée dramatique ». Entre analyse formelle, narrative et thymique" noticed a totally inverse narrative strategy.

The last style of Chopin is a new notion in musicology in France. In spite of the fact that the authors  admit its existence, very less researches concern this subject, particularly in France. All along our researches, the analysis of the works of our corpus  shows us different narratives structures.
The narrative framework, proved by some theoretician of literature , is the thread of the main conventional narrative  and can also govern the musical discourse: initial situation (tranquillity, exposition), inciting incident, quest and adventures, crisis, resolution, and final situation. In the romantic period, the artists change these traditional paths to express their new aesthetics ideas and cause a bursting of the classical structures, which will more freely model the narrative framework.
In this paper, we want to present several examples of different narrative structures in Chopin’s last style. In fact, the themes, motives and thymic states of the works enable to model different evolutions of the dramaturgy. The results of these researches reveal different “narrative structures” used by Chopin in the works of the last style.

Cet article propose une étude approfondie de la Polonaise en la bémol majeur op. 53 de Chopin afin de mettre en avant des caractéristiques essentielles du dernier style de Chopin, qui s'exprime dans les années 1840, période difficile avant son décès. La Polonaise "héroïque", investie de manière plus traditionnelle mais également par le biais d'une approche plus narrative met en avant une évolution de la forme tripartite, déjà amorcée dans la Polonaise op. 44 et qui aboutira également à la forme téléologique de la Polonaise Fantaisie op .61 qui clot ce répertoire. En effet, l'usage des topiques et de leur concaténation sont particulièrement intéréssants pour comprendre une part de l'évolution stylistique du compositeur dans les dernières années.

Il s'agit d'une analyse du roman d’Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Madame Pylinska et le secret de Chopin selon le modèle greimassien visant à élucider le rapport entre l’être et le faire du jeune protagoniste. L’article insiste sur le parcours narratif du personnage, qui apparaît sur le plan thématique comme un parcours initiatique. La relation entre le niveau thématique et le niveau discursif du récit se trouve ainsi mise en valeur à travers cette lecture sémiotique

This paper discusses music analysis in relation to images of musical sound using spectral or Fourier analysis.  Fourier analysis allows us to make pictures of musical performances, which reveal the fundamental, overtones, and complex noise-like sounds.  These images provide an acoustic basis for our musical perceptions.  The recent history of Fourier analysis in relation to musical analysis is discussed first, and then three analyses are presented using works from a variety of periods and cultures, including a prelude by Chopin, a Japanese gagaku work, and a computer piece by Markus Popp.  Chopin is discussed in relation to comparative performances, Japanese gagaku is explored in relation to timbre, and Markus Popp is looked at in relation to non-notated electronic music.  Each work highlights a specific approach that can be taken using spectral or Fourier analysis.

Può un brano di musica strumentale raccontarci qualcosa similmente ad un romanzo? Partendo da questa domanda ho in primo luogo affrontato il tema della narratività musicale, per poi in un secondo luogo analizzare la prima e l'ultima ballade di Chopin, andando a cercare all'interno di esse topoi musicali che ne giustificherebbero questo tipo di approccio.

Muzyka romantyczna stojąca w centrum myśli estetycznej i hierarchii dziedzin artystycznych (w ujęciu Schellinga i Schopenhauera) poprzez szczególną aurę i duchowość łączy rozmaite prądy, estetyki, formy i koncepcje w jednorodną całość. Nie sposób mówić o literaturze romantycznej czy malarstwie bez znajomości wizji muzyki w tamtym czasie. Stoi ona zarówno po jasnej, jak i ciemnej stronie romantyzmu. Dzięki niej odkrywamy niezbadane terytoria myśli i fantazji oraz zakamarki nieskończonej duszy.

L’idée que l’on puisse appliquer à cette oeuvre la notion de « musique à programme » est généralement dénié par la musicologie qui met en avant un Chopin plus intéressé par l’approche musicale pure que par les références littéraires. Pourtant, une anecdote rapporte que Robert Schumann tiendrait de Chopin lui-même que la première et la seconde ballade sont inspirées de poèmes du polonais Mickiewicz, sans d’ailleurs préciser lesquelles. Mais encore une fois, cette référence sera perçue comme une vision romantique et séduisante mais sans fondement avant d’être écartée de la plupart des analyses musicologiques. The idea that they could be regarded as « program music » has been usually rejected by musicologists who have tended to emphasize their purely musical aspects rather than their literary context. Robert Schumann, however, maintained that Chopin himself had stated that the first and the second Ballade were inspired by poems by the Polish poet Mickiewicz, without naming their titles. Yet the majority of musicologists saw this romantic vision of the Ballades as unfounded. Titled « Les ballades de Chopin et leur secret polonais » [Chopin’s Ballades and their Polish secret], the present article endeavors to demonstrate a substantial analogy between the four Ballades of Chopin and the four poems of Mickiewicz analyzed from a semantic rather than an exclusively structural point of view. Chopin est né en Pologne et s’est exilé en France, aussi le romantisme de Chopin est marqué par une douloureuse solitude. ABSTRACT (Free English translation by Tibor Szász, edited by Gerard Carter). Chopin’s romanticism did not fit well with the generally accepted concepts of 19th century romanticism. Chopin was born in Poland and went into exile in France, hence his romanticism was marked by a painful loneliness. Although warmly welcomed by upper class French society, their milieu did not offer the fertile ground for the artistic unfolding of this discreet and sad human being who preferred the small company of his exiled Polish compatriots and that of his own piano students. It is in le Berry in the company of Georges Sand that Chopin found the sought after creative environment. Regarded often as an enigma from a musicological point of view, these compositions stand in sharp contrast to the commonly accepted image of a pale and introverted Chopin whose waltzes, mazurkas and polonaises induced in the Parisian salons melancholic reveries full of nostalgia. This introverted playing seemed to be in such contradiction with the passionate and intense tone demanded by most of the Ballades that Chopin performed only the third one in public. The Ballades of Frédéric Chopin are true « cannons buried under flowers » as aptly characterized by Robert Schumann. Beyond the mystery and discretion of a Chopin whose playing produced a pianissimo barely audible to the audience is hidden the intensity and the spiritual depth of a suffering, forceful and passionate human being.

In the face of the increasingly large amount of literature on musical listening, a discussion of modes of listening to silences in music is much needed. Silence is a necessary component for music to exist, acting as canvas, frame, and content (Judkins, 1997). Silence as a canvas is the background that allows listeners to differentiate intentionality from non-intentionality (Cage, 1961/1973). Silence as a frame defines the start and end of a piece, as well as other perceptual sensorial limits (Littlefield, 1996). Most notably, silence as content can foster “reflections on what preceded the silence, expectations about what may follow it or what might have substituted for it” (Margulis, 2007, p. 246). Silence as content is not a particularly recurrent feature in music. In this sense, Braman (1956) clarifies that, “since composition is a process of choosing or rejecting, the composer may or may not use silences” (p. 330).
The main goal of this paper is to provide a comparative discussion of three theoretical perspectives that address the process of listening to silences, namely: the negative dynamics of rests by Hugo Riemann (1884), the perception of surprise and anticipation of temporal silences by Thomas Clifton (1976), and the perception of tension-repose in aural analysis by Suzanne Alepin (2001). Similarities and differences between these approaches are underlined by analyzing selected passages from the Four Scherzi by Frédéric Chopin. According to Lissa (1964), “pauses intertwine the entire sixty-bar introduction section in the B-flat minor Scherzo, bringing into sharp relief the dramatically contrasted short-breathing phrases, the contrasting elements in their facture, registers, and dynamic tension” (p. 449).  Chopin’s usage of silence in his Scherzi is diverse and elaborate, becoming an excellent vehicle for discussing a wide variety of modes of listening to silences in music.

Le présent article est consacré au compte rendu de Schumann pour l’Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung qui, en 1831, érige Chopin en génie et offre un commentaire poétique de ses Variations pour piano et orchestre sur « Là ci darem la mano de Mozart » op. 2 et aux variations de Schumann sur le nocturne 15 n° 3 de Chopin. Par sa « prose musicale », Schumann offre une forme inédite et novatrice de critique musicale, revendiquant clairement sa poésie et la puissance des émotions en opposition à une rationalité qui se prétendrait scientifique. Les évocations visuelles et sonores s’y entremêlent. Ici Schumann ne décrit ni les aspects réels ou perceptibles de sa personnalité, ni ceux de la personnalité de Chopin, mais des figures fantasmatiques ou rêvées du Davidsbund, qui livrent avec lui le combat contre les philistins et qu’il projette dans les œuvres de Chopin. On note chez Schumann la volonté d’accentuer les contrastes par un humour qui ébranle la tradition, et d’effacer les contrastes par la quête d’une intériorité aux antipodes de la virtuosité présumée superficielle de son temps. Cette tendance est caractéristique des personnages de Florestan et d’Eusebius. Le passage de l’effacement à l’accentuation des contrastes peut être illustré par la construction des Variations sur un nocturne de Chopin, œuvre méconnue illustrant la Charaktervariation schumannienne.

This article deals with Schumann’s review for the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung in 1831, which presents Chopin as a genius and offers a poetic commentary on his Variations for piano and orchestra on Mozart’s “Là ci darem la mano” op. 2 and Schumann’s Variations on Chopin’s nocturne op. 15/3. With his “musical prose”, Schumann offers an unprecedented and innovative form of musical criticism, which clearly claims his poetry and the power of emotions in opposition to a presumed rationality. Visual and sonic evocations intermingle there. Here Schumann describes neither the real or perceptible aspects of Chopin’s nor his personalities, but the fantasized or dreamed figures of the Davidsbund, who fight with him against the Philistines and that he projects in Chopin’s works. There is by Schumann a will to accentuate contrasts by a humor that shakes tradition, and to erase contrasts by the quest for an interiority that is the antithesis of the presumed superficial virtuosity of his time. This tendency is characteristic of the characters of Florestan and Eusebius. The transition from erasure to accentuation of contrasts can be illustrated by the construction of Chopin’s Variations on a nocturne of Chopin, an unknown work illustrating Schumann’s Charaktervariation.

This paper discusses some prejudices that musicologists still have to Villa-Lobos's music. My analysis tries to demonstrate the formal procedures used by him to compose the SQ#3, following the cyclic model by Franck and Debussy. In this sense, SQ#3 follows the stylistic trend of the former work, SQ#2.

Nos recherches s’articulent autour du dernier style de Chopin (compris entre les prémisses de 1840 et sa mort en 1849). Notre corpus d’étude de 22 œuvres musicales, dont la Ballade op. 52 en fa mineur fait partie, a été analysé en prenant en compte simultanément le signifiant et le signifié. Pour cela, le premier niveau analytique étudie la partition et son langage « écrit » (le « signifiant », aspect formel : tonalités, parties, sections, phrases, etc.). Pour l’étude du « signifié », nous utilisons les topiques musicaux (d’autres terminologies existent comme les « intonations » ou encore « sèmes »), autrement dit un réservoir de figures caractéristiques issu du savoir musical historique occidental qui détermine les styles et genres expressifs utilisés au sein d’une œuvre musicale : style agitato, alla breve, style brillant, pastoral, hymne, marche, etc. Ces derniers sont les « sujets » du discours car ils participent au processus évolutif de la musique en tant qu’unités discrétisées par leurs caractéristiques stylistiques issues de l’utilisation de tous les paramètres musicaux (rythme, tempo, densité, texture, harmonie, tonalités, tessiture, etc.) et des indications de la partition. Dans le cas de la Ballade, les topiques sont nombreux et différenciés, faisant notamment varier les deux thèmes principaux dans différents styles (valse, style savant, nocturne, hymne, hymne accompagné, etc.).

Après avoir listé les topiques mis en jeu, nous tenterons de rendre compte de leur empreinte affective, issue de notre héritage socio-culturel occidental et qui peut être plus ou moins dramatique (le style pastoral de l’introduction crée une atmosphère non dramatique (ou « euphorique ») par exemple). L’étude de l’enchainement de ces unités signifiantes (ou concaténation) permet de mettre en avant les différents types de contrastes et de ruptures qui laissent entrevoir la structure narrative de la pièce musicale.  Dans le cas de la Ballade op. 52, ils créent une phase de tension progressive (par les contrastes, les moments de ruptures redondants, la variations des thèmes, la complication des moyens, etc.) qui aboutit, depuis l’introduction pastorale, à la coda virtuose et agitato. La « stratégie narrative complexe » qui en résulte (caractérisée par ces nombreux topiques contrastants) sera ensuite mis en relation avec une étude empirique de l’enregistrement qui va extraire du fichier-son des données objectives de tempo et de nuance. Y’a-t-il finalement un lien entre les résultats thymiques obtenus par une analyse réalisée par un musicologue et les résultats informatiques ? C’est là toute la dialectique qui se noue avec cette tentative de nouvelle méthodologie analytique de la narrativité et de la sémiologie musicale.

Chopin’s music has become ubiquitous enough to forbid almost any comment on it claiming originality of insight. However, such is the universality of its powerfully expressive language that the music of this truly unique composer will surely never lose its appeal to both listener and interpreter alike. It is important to note Chopin’s place in musical history. It is this dynamic that informed his creative vernacular calling as he did on the inspiration of the Baroque and early Classical periods and proceeding to fashion an unmistakeable style without obvious antecedents and also no apparent debt to contemporaries.

Il contributo intende offrire alcuni spunti di indagine sul rapporto fra Bergman e la musica, focalizzandosi sul film "Sussurri e grida" del 1972 e allargandosi a una meditazione più ampia incentrata sulla presenza di alcune tematiche ricorrenti (l'infanzia, la morte, il ricordo). A fungere da 'trait d’union' è la concezione del tempo che Bergman elabora all’interno del film e che assume particolare rilievo alla luce del ruolo che vi ricopre la "Mazurka in La minore op. 17 n. 4" di Chopin.

Descriptive instrumental works composed in nineteenth-century Poland do not easily fit classification as consumer music, as they fulfilled important patriotic and commemorative functions. While these pieces, like descriptive works composed elsewhere, employ topical gestures and melodic quotations, in the Polish works, patriotic songs are used intertextually to construct coherent historical or allegorical narratives of the nation through music. In Jankiel’s “Concert of Concerts,” an excerpt from the epic poem Pan Tadeusz, the poet Adam Mickiewicz describes a performance of such musical narrative of events in Polish history. Thus Mickiewicz apotheosized the then-popular descriptive pieces and inspired future compositions in the same genre. These pieces cross generic boundaries and interact in unexpected ways with the canonic repertory, offering insights into compositional techniques and strategies used by composers such as Fryderyk Chopin and illuminating modes of listening familiar to their audiences.narrative of events in Polish history. Thus Mickiewicz apotheosized the then-popular descriptive pieces and inspired future compositions in the same genre. A l’heure actuelle, les approches musicologiques de type analytique sont diverses et variées. Chaque musicologue peut choisir la manière dont l’œuvre va être investie, mais différents niveaux d’objectivité et de subjectivité sont irrésistiblement présents dans chacune de ces méthodes analytiques. Existe-t-il une corrélation entre analyse objective, subjective et la pertinence des résultats obtenus ? Après quelques illustrations de ces méthodologies, nous souhaiterions confronter deux méthodologies a priori opposées de ce point de vue : l’analyse narrative d’une œuvre et l’analyse empirique de son enregistrement par le biais d’un descripteur audio.

En este artículo se analizan las diferencias existentes entre las dos ediciones objeto de estudio, manifestándose la importancia de investigar a partir de las fuentes, con el objetivo de acercarse a la intención primigenia del compositor.
A través de los parámetros contemplados se trata de mostrar razonadamente que las resoluciones planteadas por cada editor no son axiomáticas, pudiendo en cada caso alcanzarse un nivel de acierto distinto. Asimismo, se plantea que todo intérprete debe tomar parte activa en la toma de decisiones partiendo de la comprensión, y no solo entendimiento, del texto impreso, si pretende verdaderamente interpretar la obra a través de su prisma y de su propia visión artística.

Music is made to the way humans understand music. Thus, the patterns that appear in music are imitation of the patterns of how humans understand music. If it is true, it can be seen that the metrical structure of music can be considered to reflect the most basic mechanism (schema) of how humans understand music. In this study, I tried to explain grouping structure and metrical structure in one theory, by understanding the pattern of melodic grouping structure as a complicated form of metrical structure. From the observation of musical examples, rather than borrowing categorization from other fields like poetry, I found four basic patterns that are enough to analyse an entire piece of classical music.

但是，只要一提到波兰，我就会肃然起敬。波兰的第一品牌“肖邦”在全世界人民的心中占有永恒的地位。肖邦的音乐华美而不油腻，浪漫而不做作，天才啊! 我经常琢磨肖邦怎么会写出那么多那么优美的旋律。我唯一的解释是：肖邦太爱太爱波兰了，他虽然身不能回波兰，他的心永远在波兰。

Le colloque a eu comme objet la culture musicale d’André Gide et le rapport entre son écriture et ses interprétations musicales. On a analysé la relation entre écriture et processus musicaux, et les liens entre les différents types d’expression artistique : littérature, musique, théâtre (qui couple les deux). La passion musicale d’André Gide, qui était aussi pianiste, ne pouvait pas rester sans influence sur ses autres travaux. Sa sensibilité musicale a certainement produit des effets sur son attitude à l'égard de l'écriture, et la notion du rythme devient une notion clé pour interpréter aussi ses productions écrites. Pour juger une œuvre littéraire, d’habitude il la lisait à haute voix, pour pouvoir mieux en évaluer la musicalité. Il cherchait partout l’harmonie (et, comme M. Schnyder a spécifié, pas seulement dans l’art mais aussi dans la vie réelle ; ceci faisait partie de sa nature) : on aperçoit cela dans toute son œuvre. L’écriture de Gide peut être appelée écriture euphonique (du grec εὖ, « bon » et ϕωνή « son ») ; ce but est atteint après un long labeur. Gide était un classique en sa conception artistique, et en particulier son panthéon musical comprenait Charpentier, Bach, Beethoven. Pour lui, aussi Chopin devait être interprété de manière classique, joué comme Mozart, parce qu’ils expriment la même joie calme et cristalline.
