In this third volume of Pierre de l’Estoile’s journal, the author experiences France’s slow emergence out of war, and a quickening of the country’s political renewal under Henry IV. While the king continues to negotiate for peace with individual cities and forces, famine, epidemics, and strife rack the capital. A glimmer of light shines, however, as negotiations lead to the Edict of Nantes and a peaceful coexistence for French Protestants and Catholics.
Depuis le ralliement de la capitale au roi au debut de l’année 1594, Pierre de L’Estoile est le temoin inquiet des etapes de la pacification du royaume. La reconciliation civile, acquise aussi par les armes, est fragile face aux violences populaires et legales, mais en raison egalement de la disette et des épidémies. Le retour àla paix dans Paris, marqué par la difficile réconciliation des communautés déchirees, contraste avec la poursuite des conflits armes dans les provinces du royaume. Devant l’incapacité de parvenir à une paix générale, Henri IV continue de négocier avec chaque ville tout en combattant ceux qui lui résistent. Alors que s’engage la guerre contre l’Espagne, cette période est aussi celle des lentes négociations menant à l’édit de Nantes et à la coexistence pacifique des deux confessions catholique et protestante. Ces années sont donc marquées par la lenteur de la sortie de guerre et par la préparation d’une sorte de refondation politique du royaume.

Elle y enquete sur la vie et l’assassinat d’Oscar Dufrenne, celebre impresario du spectacle parisien, retrouve mort dans son bureau au theâtre du Palace, asphyxie et crâne fracasse, un soir de septembre 1933....

The word of the child victim is particularly delicate in cases of sexual violence. The fear of not being believed, the absence of a direct witness, the shame of talking about the facts suffered are as many obstacles to disclosure. This word is all the more important because in these cases, there is a vast stake around the evidence: absence of direct witness, absence of violence or physical trace, late denunciations, word of one against the other ... Also, from a corpus of cases of sexual violence tried in french correctional courts in the course of 2010, the article examines the judicial implications related to the release of the speech of the child victim (from the time of silence, to unveiling, to his revelation in court). It shows on the one hand that this word unveiled in court is complex and never neutral, especially in the case of intra-familial sexual violence; On the other hand, it can have a significant impact on the evidence, especially when the facts are disputed by the m...

The article analyses the violence that broke out at a concert of the Rolling Stones in 1965 West-Berlin. In a close reading of records from the Berlin Police archives the article understands the actions at the concert as a result of lacking experience with new cultural forms of expression, old-fashioned ideas of "order" rooting deep in German history as well as logistical failures. Analyzing the aftermath of the concert, the article demonstrates how not only the event itself, but also the effects of rock music in general and the state of post-war youth was discussed extensively in the media and even in a political debate at the Berlin city parliament. As a result, police reforms and new safety standards for concert halls and arenas were developed and internationally debated. Therefore, the article suggests to regard the mid-sixties as a watershed (« Schwellenzeit ») in the process of the establishment of a new rock and pop culture.

Dans le dernier tiers du XIXe siecle, Louise Michel est une personnalite contrastee qui fait l’objet d’une production discursive abondante et politiquement polarisee. Dans ce cadre, les recherches et les recits biographiques autour de sa jeunesse illustrent la volonte de determiner une essence, un patrimoine genetique, ou les dispositions a l’engagement revolutionnaire. Au carrefour entre science et politique, ces recits donnent a voir les valeurs et les idees des acteurs, leur facon de definir les problemes sociaux, leur positionnement dans differents clivages de l’espace politique de l’epoque : la memoire de la Commune de Paris, la pratique revolutionnaire, le feminisme. L’article montre comment la jeunesse de Louise Michel est construite et imaginee afin de donner du sens et une legitimite aux discours de credit et de discredit d’une personnalite qui incarne les oppositions politiques qui parcourent les debuts de la IIIe Republique.

The notion of ecocide, which literally refers to the destruction of an inhabited space, becomes increasingly relevant in the debate on environmental law, and in particular on the legal definition of crime against nature. We want to show in this article that the idea of ecocide is older than the word : since the beginning of the 19th century, in the West, many (scientists, philosophers, naturalists, essay writers, etc.) have worried about the growth of the environmental damages, considering them as transgressions, and even as crimes committed against God's creation or, in a more secular spirit, against a nature which should have remained untouched, for the good of mankind. We will especially insist on the fear of the punishment that such infringements provoke. Result of a divine or an immanent justice, this punishment would result in the collapse of civilisation.

The wider context of what we call « to the tune of » repertory, including different laments about events (Natural disasters, wrecks and damas in transports as train, plane, even bicycle…) shows the specificity of criminal laments, more clearly « edifying », despite or within the high-flown and sometimes gauche use of the langage, the wish of employing a « good french », almost juridical, a particular rhetoric concerning the versification, the rhymes setting, the strategical telescoping between rhymes and melody (open/closed ; non conclusive even interrogative/conclusive)… These elements lock together, structuring links and differences, nearnesses and dissimilarities… The purpose, here, is to understand, through out the use of literary techniques, the work of the one who, betwixt the crime itself and the public, writes a song text wanting, pretty much skillfully, be moral and edifying.

Growling can be regarded as a key aesthetic practice of death metal. This practice, throughout the history of the genre, has been heavily gendered; while practiced both by men and women since the early 1990s it has nevertheless been associated with masculinity, due to its perceived aggressive sound, as well as corresponding notions of perceived low pitch and noise. In 2001 Angela Gossow became the singer of the band Arch Enemy and has since established herself as one of the most outstanding female growlers within the global metal scene. An analytical look at Gossow’s individual vocal style will be applied to argue that growling could potentially contribute to a more complex understanding of how voice, gender and aggression are related. This article examines the musical phenomenon of death metal growling, as well as the marginalization of women in what has been conceived as a primarily masculine style.

À l’époque moderne, la rébellion est une catégorie juridique, qui recouvre à la fois le soulèvement en armes contre le monarque et la résistance à justice. Elle s’étend au cours du XVIIIe siècle pour recouvrir toute résistance à l’autorité. Il y a donc beaucoup de rebelles dans les prisons royales, tant dans les prisons ordinaires attachées à une juridiction que dans les prisons d’État comme la Bastille. Mais il existe aussi des prisonniers qui deviennent rebelles lors de leur séjour en prison, parce qu’ils refusent d’accepter leur détention. Les récits d’évasion d’anciens prisonniers deviennent même les symboles de la dénonciation de l’arbitraire royal.
