This paper will address the status of women in postcolonial societies, against a colonial legacy of patriarchal ideologies in Sia Figiel’s Where We Once Belonged (1996). It analyzes the socio-political problems faced by females which have followed colonialization, independence and migration in Samoa.

The paper examined the context and contribution of Nigerian diaspora civil society in the transformation of Nigeria’s public sphere. As a ‘third-way’ civil society, having global situatedness and strong local orientation, Nigerian diaspora were active in the decolonisation and democratisation processes and are now appropriating the cyberspace to establish a transnational public sphere where deliberations over matters of national significance are conducted. Although the internet-based practices of Nigerian diaspora civil society manifest in multiple forms, we focused on an online news media organisation as a case in point. By projecting itself with phrases like “practitioners of advocacy,” “exercise of freedom of speech,” and “public interest and common good,” and discussing mainly about Nigeria and of Nigerian political personalities through its US-based opinion writers and mainly Nigerian deliberators, Nigerian diasporic civil society are using online news media to widen the space for deepening democracy in Africa’s most populous country.

O estudo do turismo nas ciências sociais possui hoje o reconhecimento merecido e já não é mais necessário comprovar a sua relevância para o entendimento das sociedades e culturas, principalmente em um mundo marcado pela intensificação das mobilidades. No entanto, algumas das vertentes do turismo, como o turismo sexual e o ecoturismo, têm sido mais estudadas do que outras. Este artigo visa contribuir para o desenvolvimento do estudo dos turismos diaspóricos, que têm atraído um interesse cada vez maior de viajantes e pesquisadores. Analisando as interseções entre turismo, diáspora e raça, o artigo tem dois objetivos centrais: mapear os principais conceitos que têm sido utilizados nas análises dos turismos diaspóricos e discutir algumas das suas questões centrais. This essay argues that the tension between ‘ethnic’ and ‘national’ identity is not
contingent, but structurally embedded in the workings of the contemporary nation state.
Through an analysis of ‘the Chinese’ in ‘Australia’ it aims to demonstrate that seemingly
unambiguous concepts such as assimilation (the ethnic is absorbed by the national),
multiculturalism (the ethnic coexists with the national) and diaspora (the ethnic
transcends the national) cannot capture the diverse difficulties, ambivalences and
failures of identification, belonging and political agency experienced by Chinese
Australians. A more satisfactory analysis requires a questioning of the groupness of ‘the
Chinese’ (as well as ‘the Australians’) and overcoming conceptual groupism
(Brubaker): the tendency to take discrete, sharply differentiated, internally homogeneous
and externally bounded groups as basic constituents of social life. Instead a more
processual and flexible understanding is proposed, where the relationship between
‘ethnic’ and ‘national’ identity is one of constant evolution and mutual entanglement.

Tem havido uma procura cada vez maior, entre os membros de comunidades diaspóricas, por destinos turísticos que são compreendidos como relevantes, quando não mesmo imprescindíveis, à construção de suas memórias, histórias e identidades. O conceito de turismo de diáspora abrange uma variedade de subtipos, incluindo, entre outros, o turismo genealógico, em que se procuram informações sobre os ancestrais mais diretos, e o turismo de raízes, inspirado pela busca de um passado mais remoto e muitas vezes mitificado. As várias formas tomadas pelos turismos das diásporas têm começado a atrair a atenção de pesquisadores, principalmente nas ciências so-ciais, porém, a maior parte desses estudos tem se desenvolvido nos países do Norte global. Um dos objetivos deste artigo é, portanto, tornar disponíveis em português alguns dos principais conceitos utilizados nas análises dos turismos diaspóricos. Apresento esses conceitos não com o intuito de promover uma importação irrefletida de termos " estrangeiros " , mas para incentivar, com base nas epistemologias do Sul, o desenvolvimento de novos estudos sobre os turismos diaspóricos, nos quais esses conceitos sejam criticamente avaliados. A discussão desses conceitos nos permite ainda compreender melhor como, a partir dos " centros " , se explicam os deslocamentos para destinos geralmente localizados nas " periferias " do mundo.

Trajectory of the Rohingya, a minority Muslim community from Myanmar resettled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, has been explored in this ethnographic research. Using life history method, this study reveals a Rohingya perspective of their experience of disenfranchisement from the country of origin, cycle of violence, mass killing, forced migration, physical and sexual abuse and finally, statelessness and refugee status. Finding of this study reveals the everyday practice and agency of ordinary Rohingya people through which they are making their way of life in the midst of extreme violence in the country of origin and in protracted refugee situation in Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia before life in the USA.

In his introduction to Mourid Barghouti novel, I saw Ramallah, Edward Said refers to the Palestinians as a displaced and a misplaced people.  Regardless of the nationalities they carry or countries they live in, they carry with them the trauma of events that led to the loss of their homeland, and the grief of this loss and endless displacement.  In a conversation between a father and a son in Mahmoud Darwish’s Journal of Ordinary Grief, the son enquires of the father as to why he is picking up pebbles, to which the father answers that these are petrified pieces of his heart; it is a loss he is searching for as he refuses to get lost in his loss, which is the loss of his homeland.  The sense of displacement and loss pervade modern Palestinian literature.  In his novel, I was born there, I was born here, Barghouti describes the pain as a historical one that refuses to go away.  One way of dealing with this pain is to be able to tell one’s story.  But as Barghouti rightly remarks, Palestinians are forbidden to tell their stories, as their story is often narrated by their enemies, as the conflict over the land becomes the struggle to tell the story.  The absence of the story leads to the absence of the people, especially when the name Palestine is no longer on the world map, and its only mention is in the news as number of casualties or dead.  Palestinians embody this absence and presence. In this paper, I would like to look at Barghouti’s I was Born There, I was Born Here, and Deborah Rohan’s The Olive Grove: A Palestinian Story as the protagonists revisit what is left of the historic Palestine, to make sense of this absence by trying to pass on their stories and address the trauma that has marked their lives.

This chapter investigates the integration of Turkish and Iranian immigrants in Sweden. The analytical focus is on the complex network of ties between institutional actors located at origin and at destination, paying special attention to the role of the former, which is referred to as the “origin effect”. Integration emerges from the analysis as both a multifaceted and tangled process: both Turkish and Iranian immigrant groups show high naturalization rates, but they present significant difficulties with regard to education and inclusion in the labour market. Looking “at origin” reveals crucial elements, related to the set of actors and institutions in the sending countries, which are important to explaining the respective integration processes at destination.
