Differential Scanning Calorimeter

The influence of aging on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-11.6wt%Al-3.9wt%Ni-2.5wt%Mn shape memory alloy (SMA) was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometer, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Experimental results show that bainite, γ2, and α phase precipitates occur with the aging effect in the alloy. After aging at 300dgC, the bainitic precipitates appear at the early stages of aging, while the precipitates of γ2 phase are observed for a longer aging time. When the aging temperature increases, the bainite gradually evolves into γ2 phase and equilibrium α phase (bcc) precipitates from the remaining parent phase. Thus, the bainite, γ2, and α phases appear, while the martensite phase disappears progressively in the alloy. The bainitic precipitates decrease the reverse transformation temperature while the γ2 phase precipitates increase these temperatures with a decrease of solute content in the retained parent phase. On the other hand, these precipitations cause an increasing in hardness of the alloy.

Biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly (vinylpyrrolidone) iodine/poly(ethylene glycol) fibers containing (hydroxypropyl)methyl cellulose (HPMC) and aloe vera were successfully prepared by electrospinning their aqueous solution. Aloe vera which is known to be effective in the treatment of various wounds was added to the polymer solution. HPMC was added to the system as the water retention agent. The hybrid fiber mats were subjected to detailed analysis using a differential scanning calorimeter, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Images obtained from the SEM showed that the polymer fibers were linear, homogenous, and contained no beading. The fiber diameters ranged between 100 and 900 nm. The effect of high-pressure (HP) treatment (100–400 MPa for 15 or 30 min at 20 °C) on the rheological characteristics and colour of fresh and canned mango pulps was evaluated. Differences were observed in the rheological behaviour of fresh and canned mango pulps treated with HP. Shear stress–shear rate data of pulps were well described by the Herschel–Bulkley model. The consistency index (K) of fresh pulp increased with pressure level from 100 to 200 MPa while a steady decrease was noticed for canned pulp. For fresh pulp the flow behaviour index decreased with pressure treatment whereas an increasing trend was observed with canned pulp. Storage and loss moduli of treated fresh pulp with HP increased linearly with angular frequency up to 200 MPa for a treatment time of 30 min while a steady decreasing trend was found for processed pulp. No significant variation in colour was observed during pressure treatment.

The starches separated from thirteen different black gram cultivars were investigated for physicochemical, thermal, morphological and pasting properties. Amylose content, swelling power, solubility and water binding capacity of starches ranged between 30.2–34.6%, 16.0–22.3 g/g, 14.8–17.3% and 73.5–84.5%, respectively. The diameter of starch granules, measured using a laser-light scattering particle-size analyzer, varied from 12.8 to 14.3 μm in all black gram starches. The shape of starch granules varied from oval to elliptical. The transition temperatures (To, Tp and Tc) and enthalpy of gelatinization (ΔHgel) determined using differential scanning calorimetry, ranged between 66.1–71.3, 71.0–76.2, 75.9–80.4°C and 6.7–9.4 J/g, respectively. Pasting properties of starches measured using the Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) also differed significantly. Pasting temperature, peak viscosity, trough, breakdown, final viscosity and setback were between 75.8–80.3°C, 422–514, 180–311, 134–212, 400–439 and 102–151 Rapid Visco Units (RVU), respectively. Turbidity values of gelatinized starch pastes increased during refrigerated storage. The relationships between different properties were also determined using Pearson correlation coefficients. Amylose content showed a positive correlation with swelling power, turbidity and granule diameter. Swelling power showed a negative correlation with solubility and setback. To, Tp and Tc showed positive correlation with turbidity, pasting temperature and were negatively correlated to peak and breakdown viscosity.

This work studies the quench-induced precipitation during continuous cooling of five Al-Mg-Si alloys over a wide range of cooling rates of 0.05-2 • 10 4 K/min using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction, optical-(OM), transmission electron-(TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) plus hardness testing. The DSC data shows that the cooling reactions are dominated by a high temperature reaction (typically 500 °C down to 380 °C) and a lower temperature reaction (380 °C down to 250 °C), and the microstructural analysis shows they are Mg2Si phase formation and B' phase precipitation, respectively. A new, physically-based model is designed to model the precipitation during the quenching as well as the strength after cooling and after subsequent age hardening. After fitting of parameters, the highly efficient model allows to predict accurately the measured quench sensitivity, the volume fractions of quench induced precipitates, enthalpy changes in the quenched sample and hardness values. Thereby the model can be used to optimise alloy and/or process design by exploiting the full age hardening potential of the alloys choosing the appropriate alloy composition and/ or cooling process. Moreover, the model can be implemented in FEM tools to predict the mechanical properties of complex parts after cooling.

Carrageenophyte red seaweed from Oman, Hypnea bryoides, extracted using three different processes: an aqueous, a mild alkaline, and a more vigorous alkaline extraction was investigated. The resulting extract precipitated by alcohol was subject to chemical and rheological measurements. The total carbohydrate [ranged from 36.78 to 41.65 g/100 g], and ash [39.04 to 43.11 g/100 g] were the most abundant components in H. bryoides and contrary to the two, lipid content was found at a minimum [ranging from 2.95 to 3.38 g/100 g]. Alkali treatment with NaOH allowed complete conversion of kappa (κ) carrageenan form as detected by FTIR analysis. Total yield by alkali treatments gave higher yields (33%) compared with aqueous treatments (12%). However, subsequent aqueous treatment produced mixed carrageenan (μ and κ) with higher molecular weight compared with the alkali treatments which produced single carrageenan form (κ) with molecular weight of 4.1 × 10(5) Da. The effects of thermal history on gel-sol and sol-gel transition were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and rheology on a pure sample and 1.5% κ-carrageenan mixture added with 30 mM KCl. Transition temperatures from DSC and rheology showed comparable results and were in good agreement with those previously reported.
